Automated

Rapid diagnosis of Tuberculosis (TB) is
critical for initiation of treatment and
infection control. Sputum Smear
Microscopy (SSM) of acid fast bacilli is still
the most common TB diagnostic test
globally because of its simplicity and
associated low costs. However, manual
reading of stained slides is time-
consuming the quality of results may be
influenced by factors like user proficiency
or the number of searched Field-Of-Views
(FOV).
Implementation of the Mycobacteria
Scanner* for automated slide scan-
ning and sensitive imaging and detecti-
on of Auramine or Ziehl-Neelsen stai-
ned Mycobacteria can significantly
improve SSM workflows, reduce labor
costs and increase cost-effectiveness.

FAST AND EASY
TUBERCULOSIS SPUTUM
SMEAR MICROSCOPY
The Mycobacteria Scanner is a scalable
system adjustable to the individual needs
of your laboratory and able to scan and
analyze from 8 to 800 slides in one batch.
Auramine or Ziehl-Neelsen stained
Mycobacteria are detected and counted
automatically using objective and
reproducible criteria. The system signifi-
cantly increases the flexibility of working
processes within the laboratory because it
scans sputum smear samples unattended
during the day and / or overnight as
needed.
Seamless integration into the existing
laboratory environment facilitates the
exchange of images and data via LIMs
to store them with patient files.
Furthermore, images and results can
be reviewed immediately on the local
workstation or at decentralized review
stations within the laboratory or
hospital network.
Technicians will appreciate the signifi-
cant ergonomic improvement as they
will no longer have to spend countless
hours in front of the microscope and
can review images and data comfort-
ably and quickly onscreen.
Automated slide scanning and image
analysis speeds up SSM, therefore
increasing sample throughput.
Technicians freed from manual slide
screening can use the time saved for
other laboratory activities.
Fully Networked
Reduced Costs
Additionally, standardized and repro-
ducible SSM could be employed in a
low-cost Triage protocol to select
samples which would benefit from
subsequent confirmatory tests such as
Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests
(NAATs).

Mycobacteria Scanner improves your
quality management in multiple ways:
a Laboratories can easily implement
standardized scanning and imaging
procedures.
a Automated object detection, based
on objective and reproducible
criteria is independent from user
proficiency.
a Archiving of images improves
traceability as digitized data are
easy to track and to recall.

Quality Management
MAGAZINES
The slide frame magazines hold
16 frames with 5 slides each (80
slides in total); one system can
accommodate up to 10
magazines. Magazines are
portable and can be easily taken
to the workbench for convenient
loading.
SLIDE FEEDER
The feeder module picks the slide
frames from the magazines and
delivers them to the barcode
reader, and subsequently to the
microscope stage. The module
runs unattended and can operate
24/7 – including STAT (priority)
sample handling.
CAMERA
Outstanding performance for
clear and crisp color images at
highest speed.
MICROSCOPE
Fully integrated, motorized high-
end microscope equipped with a
high-precision stage.
All microscope functions are
directly driven by the Metafer
software.
The centerpiece of the
Mycobacteria ScannerMetafer software controls the scanning
and imaging hardware and provides a
convenient user interface for all-day
routine use.
The exceptional Metafer classifier con-
cept provides each Mycobacteria
Scanner with the optimal balance
between flexibility and standardiza-
tion. All automated microscope actions
are defined by sets of parameters bun-
dled up in customizable classifiers; they
contain information on hardware- and
software settings, protocols for intelli-
g e n t a n d a d a p t i v e a u t o f o c u s
sequences for the acquisition of high-
quality images of stained micro-
organisms, as well as macros for object
detection of Auramine or Ziehl-Neelsen
stained Mycobacteria.
DETECT
The system automatically
detects labeled bacteria and
calculates their frequency accord-
ing to user-defined settings such
as bacteria per FOV.
The relocation of bacteria under
the microscope for inspection
can easily be done via one
mouse-click.
SCAN
Slides are scanned and
imaged automatically according
to laboratory settings such as
area to be scanned, scanning
pattern and number of Field-Of-
Views.
START
Load stained Tuberculosis
sputum smear slides in the
magazine. Open the Metafer
software and load the pre-
defined settings and standard
operating sequence. Start the
scanning process.
HOW IT WORKS
The Open and
Flexible PlatformAutomated scanning and imaging of
Auramine and Ziehl-Neelsen stained TB
sputum smear sl ides with the
Mycobacteria Scanner is one of the
microbiological applications based on
MetaSystems' Metafer slide scanning
platform.
Further applications are the Gram Scanner* for automated scanning and imaging of Gram stains and Direct Multiplex Imaging (DMI)* for identifica-tion of pathogens directly from patient sample slides.
Due to Metafer´s modular and flexible architecture, it is possible to consoli-date several applications on one workstation. For example, one can combine the Gram Scanner with the Mycobacteria Scanner to process Gram stained slides during the day and TB sputum smear slides overnight.
