Additional Inertial Sensor Requirements for AD
• Integration of additional axis
– Third axis for angular rate (pitch)
• Additional measurement ranges
– Angular rate (yaw) down to 2°/s
• Gives good accuracy up to 30 km/h
– Acceleration performance 25 mg
• Means less than 2 degree in inclination
These are very challenging requirements to the current automotive
sensors, but not impossible.
Target to measure position with a lateral accuracy less than 3 cm
together with other sensors and real time reference

• It is estimated that drowsiness is a major cause of over 6,000 of
serious and fatal accidents in Europe annually.*
• Simple methods by analyzing the steering pattern or just by
calculating the time of continuous driving are already in use.
• More precise methods to detect drowsiness, overall condition of the
driver (incl. alcohol) are needed and are under development by
several potential suppliers
– The use of biological signals is considered in order to aim the
state detection with high accuracy. e.g. heart rate, pulse, brain
waves, skin, muscle, body temperature
– Measuring air and breath -> e.g. CO2, Alcohol
• Reliable biological data can be used for health control and even for
emergency call.

• Heartbeat measurement in use by Volvo
– High performance accelerometer can detect
based on the heartbeat if there is a human being
inside the car, when the doors are locked
– This is an important feature to alarm if for
example child was left in the car or if somebody
is hiding for any reason inside the car
Does not work when driving!
• Under development at Murata
– Heartbeat monitoring with pressure sensors and
accelerometers attached to the seat
– Blood pressure measurement with pressure
sensors (see next page)
– Air measurement based on optical sensing and
fabry-perot spectrometer (research phase)

• In C2C/C2X communication the positioning accuracy of GPS is
several meters and success rate is about 96%. It can realize only
warning to the drivers.
• Further improvement in accuracy is required in order to perform the
operation control (< 10 centimeter).
