    Learning Outcomes:

    AutoCAD Self-paced Learning Modules

    AutoCAD 2DModule 32

    Drawing Utilities

When you have completed this module, you wil l be able to:

    1. Describe the PURGE, RENAME and TIME commands.

    Drawing Utilities

It is very important to maintain your drawings and your drawing files on a daily bases. It is veryeasy, while working day-to-day producing drawings, to let things slide and not correct smallitems in the drawings or the drawing files. If left unchecked, that habit can lead to big problemsin the future sometimes almost impossible to fix.

Take a few minutes while working on each drawing to maintain objects, layers, blocks, xref, names, and all the different styles. With drawing files, create an organized logical folderstructure, making more folders rather then less and dividing drawing files into smallerorganized groups. Create a good naming system for your folders and drawings. Give themdescriptive names, ones that can be sorted alphabetically. Remove unwanted files, and keepyour .BAK files under control.

AutoCAD has several utilities that are helpful to organize and maintain your drawings. UseWindows Explorer to maintain the drawing files. In this module, the PURGE, RENAME and

TIME commands are covered to help you in your day-to-day drawing maintenance.

    Nested Objects

A nested objectis a named object referencing another named object. One example would be

an object in a block located on layer Object but the block is on layer Block. The Object layerwould appear not to have any objects on it but in fact, an object in the block is on that layer and

that makes it a nested object.

Sometimes it is desirable to nest items to help you draw and design more efficiently. Anexample of this could be as follows: You are drawing an object that has several components.

You draw each component separately and create a block of each. Next, you assemble all theblocks and then make a block of the assembly. The blocks inserted in the assembly block arenested blocks. Nested objects are not necessarily a bad thing, but they can cause problem ifthey are not used correctly or the operator is careless with them.

AutoCAD does not allow you to make a block that references itself. An example of this wouldbe if you tried to create a block using an object that contained a block with the same name.

You can only purge items from a drawing ifthey are not being used at the time. Forexample, items that CAN be purged is ablock that is defined but is not inserted inthe drawing or a layer that was created butthere are no objects on that layer. The list

of items that can be purged will display inthe dialogue box with a + (plus sign) in

Step 23 Save and close the drawing.

The PURGE command removes unwanted items from the drawing. In

some cases, it is the only way to remove them. If an item is being used, itcannot be purged. For example, a layer with an object on it cannot bepurged, nor a block definition that has been inserted onto the drawing.

    Drafting Lesson

    Cross Sections - Part 2

    Types of Section Views

There are many types of section views that

can be drawn. Thefull, half, aligned andrevolvedsections are shown below. They areused mainly to section symmetrical objects.

    Full Section

A full section is the most commonly used

section. It cuts completely through the objectalong the cutting plane.

    Half Section

The half section only cuts through half of the

object. It is used when a symmetrical objectwould be the same on both sides.

    Aligned Section

An aligned section is when spokes are aligned

to line up with the cutting plane on symmetricalobjects. Take note how the spokes are not onthe cutting plane but they are aligned andsectioned as if they were.

    Revolved Section

A revolved section is a simple way to show

the shape of anobject like aspoke. Revolvethe section righton the object asshown.

When entering names for drawings, blocks, layers and other items, it is

important to name them so they are descriptive and can be found easily.

Naming them so they group together or are easy to find in a search isimportant. Also you want them to

be unique to your company andlisted in the best alphabetical order. Let's assume

you are a house designer and the name of yourcompany is House Designer Ltd. For a namingscheme on layers in your drawings you might wantto name all your layers starting with HDL. Such asHDL Floor Plan, HDL Furniture, etc. Notice howthey appear on the layer list on the right and howthey are grouped together, easy to find and uniqueto your company.

To name the drawings you create for your company. Use a

    32 - 9

naming scheme such as HDL House 0203, HDL House 3252, HDLHouse 2143 etc. On the left is a partial list of how your drawingfiles would appear in Windows Explorer.

When an item you wish to purge from

a drawing is listed in the items you

cannot purge, click the item andPurge dialogue box will display tipswhy the item cannot be purged as you can see below.

Using these tips, you can then figure out what changes

have to made to the drawing before the items can bepurged.

The Key Principles in Module 32

    1. The PURGE command removes unwanted items from the drawing. In some cases, it is

the only way to remove them. If an item is being used, it cannot be purged.
