No official statistics are being published about the cost of low speed accidents, in terms of repair and insurance, but more importantly of human lives.Parking aid systems can help reduce property damage, protect people and animals, and make driving and parking easier.

Providing safety to vehicle owners

Since 1994, the number of stolen vehicles remains stable or is slightly decreasing in most European countries, due to the EU legislation introducing the mandatory fitting of immobilisers on new vehicles. Nevertheless, according to the latest available report from Europol (European Police Office, January 2006), the incidence of organised international vehicle trafficking is on the increase.

Vehicle crime: beyond the European perspective

Whilst the overall number of stolen vehicles is decreasing, their value is increasing and so is the number of non recovered vehicles. The annual benefits of the criminal organisations is estimated to have reached 6,75 billion € per annum in the last few years.

According to information provided by some European Union countries, vehicles stolen mainly in Germany, Belgium, France and Italy are transported principally towards the Russian Federation, Czech Republic, Poland, the Baltic states and towards South-eastern Europe; Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Romania. Three main transit countries or groups of countries have emerged: Germany and to a lesser extent Italy and the Nordic countries. Looking at the UK and Spain, it appears that both these countries are distribution centres for African countries.

Cobra is committed to offer new solutions able to handle unpredictable events and minimise the related risks: vehicle theft, theft from the vehicle, car jacking, low speed accidents and fraud.Such risks can be prevented and managed through Electronic Systems and Location Based Services. Both sectors need to be addressed specifically as the market characteristics and business processes are different. Cobra decided to launch investment programs with dedicated resources and processes able to respond to the most severe automotive standards and to guarantee the highest service level required for emergency services.

Cobra Automotive Technologies is focused on offering vehicle manufacturers and insurance companies a unique opportunity to collaborate in designing value-added services that improve utilisation, productivity and security of the vehicle.

In order to mitigate risks related to vehicle crimes, insurance companies in all European countries have started to define antitheft systems requirements since 1993.Cobra invests in technological and process innovation to meet evolving automotive market requirements and reinforce market leadership targeting reliability, availability and maintainability.

In 1997 Cobra, capitalising on the experience related to the ultrasound sensor and echo elaboration techniques, started to design its first parking aid system that used ultrasonic wave sensors to detect obstacles.

Cobra, the unique Pan-European Service Provider

1. European infrastructure Stolen vehicle tracking across 36 European countries and the CIS. Server-based infrastructure and network of National Service Providers (NSPs) and Secure Operating Centres (SOCs) in charge of police liaison and vehicle recovery in local language on the customer’s behalf in all the countries.Cobra provides a true international infrastructure, not just roaming! No other company offers this level of service.

2. Approved by vehicle manufacturersThe only system tested and approved by: Bentley Motors Ltd, Ferrari SpA, Lamborghini SpA, Maserati SpA, Nissan Europe, Porsche AG, Renault SA.

Manufacturers will accept liability and provide warranty only for the genuine system.

3. Pinpoint GPS trackingStarts the moment an alert is received and the theft is confirmed, enabling the Cobra SOC to track the vehicle and to give the Police a head start on the thieves.

4. User privacyAccess to the information related to the vehicle position is possible for the owner only.The Cobra SOC can localise the vehicle only in case of theft.

5. Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR)More security with the ADR that identifies the authorised driver automatically. Detects vehicle theft the moment it happens. All the driver has to do is carry the card separately to his keys.

6. Alerts notificationDepending on the service level, a variety of alerts are detected and notified to the customer and/or to the SOC.

7. Engine inhibit remote operation Allows the Cobra SOC to immobilise the vehicle subject to Police authorisation and in accordance with local legislation.

8. “Crime in progress” informationLive tracking via an open line to the Police gives them the best opportunity to get the vehicle back undamaged and to catch the thieves as well.

9. Covert installationThe unit once installed is virtually impossible to detect as being hidden, in an access-difficult location, to any potential thief. No external sign alerts the thief about the presence of the system.

10. No Police hardware requiredUnlike RTF based systems, the Cobra SOC can follow the vehicle and liaise with any patrol car, giving the Police live tracking data, including speed of travel.

Theft prevention to fight old and new crime methods

Car theft is a rewarding business and a low-risk crime. Cobra’s approach to theft issues is based on the observation of the methods used by thieves and the development of specific solutions to warn them off: Theft from the car and theft of wheels: a wide range of sensors guarantees the perimetric and volumetric protection against non authorised intrusions in the vehicle, whilst the level monitor protects against theft of car wheels; Car jacking: the alarm is triggered after the driver has been forced out of the vehicle with the engine running. The alarm is delayed so the driver is at a safe distance away from the carjacker before the siren blasts. This feature also immobilises the engine;

Home jacking: a code must be entered every time the vehicle gets started. This feature prevents someone who has stolen the car keys and remote control from running away.

Cobra Bridge: synergy with the vehicle’s electronic system.Targeted to meet the higher antitheft needs in all markets, it has been designed to be compatible with the Controller Area Network (CAN). Connection to the systems programming and diagnostic tools is possible via the Cobra BUS.It offers an extensive range of functionalities: anti hi-jack, car finder, panic alarm, volumetric protection, speed limit alert and more.Cobra Bridge meets the strictest automotive and insurance companies standards and regulations.

Cobra Globe: the easy to fit solution with a rich set of working features.To allow complete flexibility, the Cobra Globe range has been developed both with traditional remote controls and, for vehicles with original remote controls, with a passive entry device. Thanks to the driver card, the connections with the vehicle original electronic system are no longer needed. The alarm will simply disarm when getting close to the vehicle, and arm when moving away.

Providing safety to vehicle owners and avoiding tragic accidents is at the heart of Cobra’s mission.No official statistics are being published in Europe about the cost of low speed accidents - in terms of repair and insurance, but more importantly of human lives. In the United States however, the North American association Kids and Cars (www.kidsandcars.org) maintains a national database tracking deaths and injuries to children left unattended in or around motor vehicles, as currently no federal or state agency is collecting information related to non-traffic incidents on private property. In 49,5% of the cases, fatalities are caused during rear manoeuvres.In 13,4%, they are caused by frontovers.

Parking aid systems can help reduce property damage, protect people and animals, and make driving and parking easier.

Cobra Park Master uses 4 ultrasonic sensors fitted to the front bumper and up to 4 ultrasonic sensors fitted to the rear bumper, strategically positioned to detect close obstacles and transmit an audible warning signal to the driver.

The detected obstacle will be indicated by an intermittent beep, increasing in frequency until it becomes a continuous tone as the vehicle moves closer to the obstacle.

Sensors can be painted to match the vehicle colour, so owners can benefit from the system’s practicality without compromising on style.

Cobra Park Master is the right solution not only for the quality of its components, but also due to its simple working and installing. The new display complements the Park Master functionalities and provides both visual and acoustic signalling to help make parking easier.

The 16 leds visible on the display indicate the distance between the front or rear of the vehicle and the obstacle. The display is equipped with an internal buzzer replacing the Park Master 0156 and/or 0158 buzzers that then have to be disconnected. The accessory can be installed in different appropriate places without compromising on style.

The activity of Cobra as a global vehicle security designer includes anti-theft security for motorised two-wheelers. The group supplies Aftermarket products in Europe, Australia and Japan and is also a supplier of genuine accessories to motorcycle manufacturers such as Yamaha Motor Europe, Ducati Motor Holding, MV Agusta and Honda Access Europe.

From the very first product version launched more than 20 years ago, the alarm was patented for its innovative principle of movement detection, based upon the monitoring of a metal ball housed inside a plastic sphere.
