People’s minds right now are on the new goals and resolu-tions they set at the beginning of January, and whether

you are sticking to them or not, everyone’s thinking about how to be better, faster, stronger, or thinner. We

here at Authentic are no exception. As you can see, there have been some huge improvements here at Authentic. Each

month our goal is just to up our selves from last month, and this is only the beginning. From the illustrations, to the

articles, to the layouts, it’s all about moving forward.

This month we have all brand new features. For our tech people: App of the Month by Jeremy Holder. And we could

never forget about our movie lovers, with the Fab Film Focus by Milan Harden. And there’s tons more for all the rest of you.

So fittingly, this month ‘s theme is We’re Just Getting Started, so

don’t slow us down. This is only our second issue and all of us here at Authentic are ecstatic to show you what we’ve been working on.

Impressed? We sure are, and it can only go up from here.

CHANGE ON THE DASHBOARD

Twelve cents on the dashboardmy step father told me not to.

I guess that’s one mistake i made.Sure did teach me to listen.

One cancer stick left, I guess that’s another mistake I made,

“come on Tyler, It doesn’t taste that bad.”Guess it wasn’t the taste i should have been afraid of

My teacher told me not to.I guess that’s one more mistake to list,

sacrificing flesh for a thrill.Wont try that again.

Sacrificing my weekend for a little debbie’s.One i could have paid for,

mom was disappointed, I guess sheexpected more from me, why ever would she do that?

Twenty dollars on the dashboard.Algebra book in hand and pen in the other.I think it was fair for her to expect more,

“don’t worry ma, I know better now.”

Spotify, could be described as a music lovers dream. it brings so much to thetable that it is almost impossible not to like! Want to hear the latest single by yourfavorite artist in an instant? No problem, how about the whole album and then downloadit in a matter of seconds? Create playlists and add what you want to them-no limit. Ifyou have a favorite song, play list, album, etc. And want to listen to more like it; you canmake a radio station from it (just like Pandora, another great music app). It also has allthe usual suspects for music apps such as easy playlist creating, organizing, rating, searching, and more.

Another great thing about Spotify is that its Social Networking enabled (can bedisabled). When you listen to songs, everyone can see- not only on Spotify but alsoon facebook as well. This is a great feature for seeing what your family and friends liketo listen to. Spotify even let you download the playlists you like to your device (iOS,android, PC, etc.) so you can listen to your music even if you have no internet/cellularconnection. Best of all, EVERYTHING in Spotify is Cloud enabled. So all your songsand more will be available on whatever device you use, no matter how many devicesyou use.

CONS: Most of the features require a subscription. Spotify no longer works withSoundhound.

To summarize it up, Spotify can:

• Instant access to millions of songs• Stream online• Listen offline – no mobile connection needed• Share music with your friends• Star your favorite tracks• Wirelessly sync your own music to your device• Create and sync playlists• Send the music you’re enjoying direct to Facebook and more!

Very few apps got the whole perfect package right to the tee. IMDB is one of them. With IMDB you get exactly what you what you want, a super Inter-national Movie Data Base! The interface design is just beauty crisp on Apple iPhones, iPads, and iP-Touch devices with Retina display. IMDB just made it so easy to such for movies, watchtrailers, get cast info and more. All the trailers, posters, and pictures just pop on thosedisplays. Have no fear Android users, if you have a HD Super AMOLED touchscreen, then your eyes will rejoice as well. Another cool feature is the ability to be “notified”.If you are looking forward to a movie, you can be notified on when it comes out, this way you can never forget about your upcoming favorite movie. Best of all for manyis the “parents’ guide”, this insane-ly useful tool can be used to see what is actually ina movie that could be alarming or offensive. How so? Well let’s say you are with yourfriends and you want to catch a flick and it’s your turn to pick the movie. Last time youpicked the movie it was a little to…intense (violence, gore, etc.). This time you can“prescreen” your movie, and see just how much violence is in the movie- did anyone

get shot, ran over by a car, de-capitated, slapped, blown up, etc. I would highly suggestusing this tool when going to the movies with family and friends (especially those whoare a little sensitive towards violence, nudity/sex, profanity, alcohol, etc.).

CONS: I am truly having a hard time thinking of any. This app does what you want it to,and does it well. IMDb is fast and easy to use, so a learning curve is almost nowhere tobe found.

To summarize it up, IMDb can:

Honest TO

Sorry fellas, but this month’s blog is definitely for the ladies.

With a romantic touch and summery feel, Nia Rose’s blog is the epitome of summer-time love. From little kisses with champagne and strawberries, to beautiful sunsets that make you feel the warmth of a thousand summers. Hailing all the way from Tempe, Arizona, she’s not a stranger to the sunshine feeling of her blog. I head over to her blog when-ever I need an escape from the 6 inches of snow here in Michigan- even if it’s just for a while- to remind myself of the magic summer has to offer, and it never fails to cheer me up. Fortunately, Nia rose let us in on some secrets behind her blog in her interview with us;

A. How would you describe your blog?

N. “I would describe my blog as a mix-ture of everything from Fashion, Food, Love, and Happiness, anything positive and encouraging.”

A. Why do you think your followers are attracted to your blog?

N. “I think my followers are attracted to my blog because it has pictures and words that they can relate to. I feel like my followers follow me because I’m an overall nice and friendly person.”

A. What’s one thing your followers don’t know about you?

N. I think one thing that my follow-ers don’t know about me is how truly loving I am. People tend to only see the surface of me but if you dig deeper, I am a lot more than what meets the eye.

A. What some of your biggest inspi-ration for blogging and fashion?

N. “My biggest inspiration for blogging is the fact that it helps me get through the tough days. Whenever I need to escape, I just go to tumblr and it relaxes me. As for fashion, I love it. Dressing up is my favorite. Clothing helps us express the type of people that we are and I love that”

A. Why did you start blogging?

N. “I started blogging because a friend told me about the site. I never thought I would actually sign up and like it. I never actually realized how many dif-ferent types of people there were in this world and how many people were like me. I used to be such a different person before tumblr but now I love the young girl that I’ve become.”

A. What do you think it means to be Authentic, and why are you Authen-tic?

N.“I think being authentic means to always be yourself and never lose sight of who you are as an individual no matter what happens. I think I’m pretty authentic because I’m always myself. In any situation I never sugar coat anything I feel; although sometimes I may be very blunt, but I think all people need to know at least one person who is always real. I never change for anyone I’m genuine & I think that’s why people like me.”

THE DANDY’S CLOSET

The Spotlight Gentlemen of February 2013Congolese Sapeurs

Congolese Sapeurs or Le Societe des Ambianceurs et des PersonnesElegantes as they are know in French. They are the Spotlight Gentlemen of

February because of their work promoting the ideas of true gentlemanlyconduct and dress, in the presently war torn country of the Democratic

Republic of the Congo. They are a Non violent and drug free movement. That lives by a conservative moral code. Promoting Africa as a land filled

with beautiful people wearing the dandiest of clothing.

“Let’s drop the weapons, let us work and dress elegantly”- Sapeur Motto

The Art of Gentlemanly Conduct; 3 simple Do’s, 1 major Don’tDo Open Doors for all Ladies.

Do always have a positive self image.Do always give a little of your time to mentor younger gentleman in training.

Don’t second guess yourself or downplay your ability’s.

London fog winter coat

It’s cold outside, what should a Gentleman wear? The modern man that resides in an area prone to snowfall knows hissurroundings. London Fog is a basic almost inherent name found in anorthern snow-faring Dandy’s encyclope-dia of fashion.London Fog is superior for both style and survival reasons; because in -1 degree temperatures, no winter coat in this dandy’s opinion, provides asmuch warmth, comfort, and style as a Double Breasted London Fog wintercoat. With that classic English coat on your back, men will be flushed with adesire to acquire it, and you’ll get many approving looks from the oppositesex, as well.

In addition to a great coat, foot wear is equally important for a dandy ina winter climate. The ugly cookie cutter boots of childhood would nevermake the cut of what a modern dandy would be caught dead in these days.So my suggestion to look stylish and warm at the same time is to invest in apair of Stafford Wingtip boots. They bring a classic vintage style in additionto having a comfortable and warm lining that the dressed man has beensearching for, in my opinion a must have for this winter season.

To be Authentic is to be made or done in an original way. Whether it is through your personality, fashion, or my favor-ite…Hair! I’m always looking at different hairstyles whenever I’m out anywhere. When I see someone with a huge afro, it brings a smile to my face because I can tell that they must have a lot of pride in where they come from and their African roots. Or When I see someone with a half shaved head, like the singer Cassie, I can immediately sense the fearlessness in them.

We shouldn’t think of hair as being something we have to “put up with” or a “bother”. We should see it as another way to express ourselves and show our Authenticity.

One person that uses this form of hair expression beautifully is the mega pop artist Rihanna. She’s famous for chang-ing her hairstyle for every album she comes out with. With her hard rock star album Rated R came out she cut her hair in a very edgy style and dyed it black to show just how hard she really was. When her romantic lovey-dovey album Loud came out she threw in the extensions and dyed her hair red to show her femi-nine side.

Hair is probably one of the easiest ways to express your self, because it’s yours! You have FULL control over it. Sure it’s annoying to wake up to in the morning, andyeah it can sometimes get expensive, but hey, that’s the price of beauty.

Hair is a woman’s pride and joy-- our crown and glory! But it doesn’t define us.Singers India Arie and Solange Knowles, have turned to the mantra “I am not my hair” and have both shaved their heads completely bald at one point. This is a bold hairstyle, because even though there isn’t any hair, the lack of hair also represents something. It represents that although we can use hair to represent ourselves, it’s not the only thing that can help us do that.

As India Arie sang, “It’s time for us to redefine who we can be. You can shave it off like a South African Beauty, or you can get it locked like Bob Marley. You can rock it straight like Oprah Winfrey.” Although we will be united with our hair for a very, VERY long time, we have to remember that “It’s not what’s on our head, it’s what’s underneath”.

English- Irish pop boy band One Direction, is the #1 boy band of the 2010’s. Members Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn

Malik, are signed to Syco Records, Simon Cowell’s record-ing label. They also signed with Columbia Records in the U.S.

How it All Got Started

In 2010 all of the members of One Direction auditioned as solo acts in the British singing competition “X Factor Season 7”. As none of the guys were progressing very far individually, guest judge Nicole Scherzinger suggested a five member boy band. During boot-camp the boys quali-fied for the “Groups” category. Harry Styles suggested the name One Direction and tit stuck. They went on to finish third on “The X Factor” and their song “Forever Young” (which would have been their first single ifthey won) was released online. Then, it was reported that they had signed a 2 Million Pound recording contract with Syco Records. In January 2011 they flew to L.A. to work and record with award winning producer Red One.

Up All Night And Beyond

In September 2011, they released their first single “What Makes You Beautiful” and it was in immediate #1 in the UK. It was also the most pre- ordered single in Sony Music History. Other singles like “One Thing” and “Gotta Be You” were also top ten hits. In November of 2011, they signed with Columbia Records in North America. In Feb-ruary 2012 “WMYB” was released in U.S. and debuted at #28 but peaked at #4. Also in February 2012 they opened up for Big Time Rush in North America. The group re-leased their debut CD “ Up All Night” in early 2012, easily topping the charts in over ten countries. In late 2011 they started headlining their own “Up All Night Tour” and in early 2012 they announced Australian and North Ameri-can dates. With only 62 shows, they sold out quickly.

Focusfilm

The first Film we’re focusing on is arguably the best teen flick of our generation:Mean Girls. If you haven’t seen it, you need to reassess your life immediately, because some-thing is horribly wrong with you.

The best thing about this movie are the Plas-tics. They’re fierce, they’re fashionable, they’re formidable. Technically, they’re kind of the bad guys, but they’re also kind of super AMAZING. They’ve risen above the drab anonymity of high school to become a force to be reckoned with. And THAT is what we’re going to focus in on.

Here’s how to become an AUTHENTIC show-stopper like the Plastics.

1. Know what you bring to the party. Then OWN it. Regina, Gretchen, Karen, and Cady were beautiful. They wore their perfect little micro-minis with their perfect little mani-cures. They were like Barbies, and they knew it, then they made sure everyone ELSE knew it. So find what makes you STELLAR, then put it on lock. Are you the tallest? Have the shiniest hair? Know more about Batman than any other person reasonably should? Let ‘em know.2. Make your own rules. “On Wednesdays we wear pink!” The Plastics had a very strictdress code to uphold the integrity of their plastic

image. You break the rules, and you’re out, (as Regina George knows all too well). So create some guidelines to live by. I person-ally make sure to never let a dog bark at me without barking back, and only eat brownies for breakfast if they’ve been refrigerated for at least 2 hours.3. Know your friends and stick close to them. The Plastics dominated because theymade a united front. It wasn’t until they turned against each other that they startedto fall. Be loyal to your friends, and buy them a biscuit or something. Let them know you’re happy they’re alive. Because life is pretty suck-ish without friends.

So there you have it; 3 steps that are sure to make you a number-one-stunner readyto take over the school, or your life, or the DVD player, because it’s time to watch MeanGirls now.

Ladies: there is a place where all of the hottest clothes, shoes, and jewelry in the universe have been dumped into one very fan-tastic store. That store is Nasty Gal. It’s a beautiful combination of stunning vintage pieces and a remarkable clothing line of the same name. The founder, Sophia Amoruso, started out by just

selling vintage pieces on eBay, but it soon became apparent that she could do so much more than that. She could sell tons more

clothes, and make women all over the world fall head over heels into fashion heaven if she opened up her very own store. Don’t

let the price tags fool you, because the sales are out of this world. Some of the sexiest jewelry ever can be yours for only $2.50. I’m

ONEWARSIt’s hard to be Authentic, when you aernt alone.

pictures interview and story by Nastasia Harden

ONEWARSIt’s hard to be Authentic, when you aernt alone.

ALEXANDREA DAVIS, is a 17 year old Junior in high school, with a lot of potential. Sitting at the top of her class academically she strives for excellence, but never forgets to have fun along the way. Filled with laughter and joy, she’s a loyal best friend, daughter, girlfriend, and twin.

We watch shows like TWINTERVENTION on TLC and SISTER, SISTER the sitcom from the 90’s. and see how these twins appear to be hooked to each other by the hip from dressing, experiences, talking, and relationships they share everything, literally from womb to tomb. You may find yourself wishing you had a twin at times, someone who is always there and always will be. Someone you can switch places with for your math test next period, and to play jokes on people with.

But how does it feel to be a Twin while you’re trying to indentify yourself, and truly be Authentic? When you have someone in your face, with your face all the time, this can can be harder done than said.

It’s easy for people to look at identical twins and see the clone war, that goes on between finding themselves. And thats why Alexandrea is our cover girl this month because despite the challange of self discovery with a twin, everyone grouping them together as the same person all the time, shes done it. Alexandrea is a completly authentic, an original person and she shares how with us in our interview.

What do you think it means to be Authentic?

A. To me, to be authentic means to be your-self, and to be down to earth, and trustworthy. Youwant to be respectful and respected, and also reliable and kind. Be good to others and strive forthe best, because when you have authenticity, you support others, help them, and give them thebest of you. People should be able to look up to you and learn from you for their greater good. Itis important to always be true to others, and always be true to yourself.

What makes you Authentic?

A. I’m a really humble person, so I couldn’t just come out and say “Oh yeah, I’m authentic.” Ibelieve other people are the judge of that, but if I had to name something that I think could makeme authentic in the eyes of others, I would say my compatibility, my kindness, and my courtesy.I’m very accepting of other people and I don’t con-sider myself superior to anyone. I don’t wantpeople to think poorly of me, and I do my best to treat others the way I want to be treated.

What are your favorite things to do in life?

A. I love reading, writing, and creating art. I’ve also come to love shopping in the past fewyears (I used to hate it), and hanging out with my family, my friends, and my boyfriend. I don’thonestly go out to parties or sit around talking about the latest fashion trends or some famousguy’s abs like a lot of teens do. My twin sister, a couple of my friends and I play board games. Itsounds really nerdy and boring, but it’s actually re-ally fun. We play a few games, and we switchit up every time, and we get very competitive with it. It’s really cool.

How do you balance between your job, school, your friends, boyfriend, and being a full time sis-ter? A. Learning how to balance out my life has

become very important since I got into high school.I am in advanced and AP classes, I have a job, extra-curricular activities, and a boyfriend. I haveto make time for all of them, and it isn’t easy. I try to work longer on the weekend than I do ona weekday, that way I have more time to study and do homework and also talk to my friends.Sometimes I’ll stay up until 1:00 in the morning working on homework, or doing it the nextday during lunch or in a class that I’ve finished my work in for the day. No matter how late Istay up, I always make sure to say goodnight to my boyfriend before he goes to sleep, becausethat’s important to me. Having two sisters doesn’t complicate things too much, but I do have toshare with them and make space for them, too. It helps a lot that everyone in my life understandshow important it is to have a good education and do well in school, so they help me and theyunderstand when I need to focus my attention on my schoolwork.

With a twin do you ever feel like you lack origi-nality, or that it’s harder for you to be anauthentic?

A. Because I am an identical twin, I always encounter people who mistake me for my sister, andvice versa. I’m certain that not one person in my life hasn’t gotten Olyvea and me mixed up atleast once since I’ve known them. Still, I don’t often feel like I lack originality or that it’s harderto be myself because my sister and I are so complete-ly different. Once people get to know us,they are surprised at how different we are, because a lot of people expect twins to be exactlyalike. But we are only alike on the outside. On the inside, I know that our personalities are notalike in any way. We have our twin moments at times and we do some of the same things, butwe don’t have twin telepathy or anything like that. I know that I am a completely different personthan my sister, and so I don’t ever really feel unorigi-nal or like I lack authenticity, which is nice.
