T h e last astronomical novelty of the Southern hemisphere i s one of very great interest. The Star y Argus (marked in Bode's Map a s 7 Robur Caroli) has always hitherto been regarded a s a Star of the second niagriitude or a t most as (2 .1) During the former years 1 h a l e had it (as is were) contiriually under my eye, by reason of the great nebula which surrounds i t , and of which I have been taking most careful drawings. I have always considered it as (2.1) and never had reason to suppose it variable. In Noveniher 1837 I saw it a s usual. .Iudge of my surprise to find on the 16. 17. De- cember that it had suddenly become a Star of the first magnitude and almost cquat to Rigel. It continued to in-

crease. Rigd is now not to he comparcd to it, it e x c e e d s A r c t u r u s and is very nearly equal to OL Centauri, being a t thc moment when I write, the fourth Star in the heavens in order of brightneb.
