Italian Federica Rivolta and her 4-year-old mare Black Magic Master (Master Snapper x Smokin Sailor Jessie) had already been leading after the go round together with Jan Tobias Kock and QT Red N Run. In the final, they scored a 217. Black Magic Master was bred by Roberto Cuoghi. Rivolta rode this mare to 7th place in Intermediate Non Pro at the Lombardia Reining Show.

Two riders tied for the Co-Reserve Championship Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro scoring a 211.5: Jan Tobias Kock aboard his stallion QT Red N Run (Dun It On The QT x Moms Lil Ruffian) and Gabriele Carrarini aboard her NRHA European Futurity finalist mare CG Surprising Jewel (ARC Surprising Smart x Serra Doll Bar). QT Red N Run and Jan Tobias Kock were NRHA Breeders Futurity Ltd. Non Pro Reserve Champion.

Futurity Open Finale 4-year-old horses L4 ends with Co-Championship Markus Gebert and Gennaro Lendi

A great Open Futurity final 4-year-old horses L3 and L4 finished the 10th AustrianRHA Futurity & NRHA Show. It ended with a tie on first place Tie between Markus Gebert aboard Wimpys Little Shine (Wimpys Little Step x Shine Like A Babe) and Gennaro Lendi aboard Capitana N Glo (Frozen Sailor x Rooster Flash N Glo). Their fantastic runs had earned a 220.5 each. After a long Futurity week, both decided against a run off and became Co-Champions.

Wimpys Little Shine was bred by Quarterdream and is owned by Markus Gebert’s wife Angelika, who also won the Non Pro Futurity this year Markus is a multiple IRHA Futurity Champion, NRHA Breeders Futurity and European Futurity Finalist.

Capitana N Glo was bred by Angelucci QH. The mare owned by Vittorio Rabboni was 8th at the NRHA European Futurity. FEI World Champion Gennaro Lendi also tied for third place honours in L4 aboard the Paint Horse Big Gangster Cash (Big Chex To Cash x Gangsters Crome, owner Paolo Resi) with Davide Brighenti and Laura Letizia Selvi’s OT Hot Rocks(Taris Valentine x Great Raquel) – Their Score: 217.5.

This meant the Reserve Championship in Intermedi-ate Open for Brighenti as well. Arnaud Girinon aboard Kimberley Wegner’s Smart SS Spook BB (Smart Spook x Soft Whizspers) and Klaus Lechner aboard Dream On Top (Magnum Chic Dream x On tops Josefine) owned by Judith Ernst tied for third place scoring a 216.5.

of its best horsemen did it again: Canadian Vern Saper-gia rode the AQHA gelding HF Sand Bagger (Jerry Lees Surprise x Hung Up On The Girl) for owner Iris Larissa Autengruber to the Futurity Championship Level 2 Open. The horse bred by Heritage Farm, had already been first after the go round and scored a 217.5 with a brilliant run in the final. Lukasz Czechowicz and the AQHA mare Frozen Spookiness (Smart Spook x Frozen Slide, breeder and own-er: Andrzej Ciok) placed second scoring a 216. Czechowicz also placed third with the AQHA stallion Hot Spark Olena (Shiner Olena x Roosters Hot Piq) for breeder and owner Katarzyna Roleska (215,5). Altogether, 13 horses had made it to the Level 2 Final.

It was in the Level 1 Open final as well, that the best rider of the go round became Futurity Champion: Bernardo Sarao (ITA) aboard the AQHA stallion A Peppy Cadillac (Peptowa x Cadillac Dun, owner Vittorio Rabboni, breeder Ingram QH) scores a 213.5 in a field of seven finalist. Sarao is an NRHA European Futurity and IRHA Futurity Finalist.

The Futurity Reserve Championship Open L1 was claimed by Walter Martini (ITA) aboard Stoney Russell’s Who Whiz Cappacino (Who Whiz It x Ha Nic A Chic) bred by Clint Haverty. The mare scored a 210.5. Walter Martini operates his facility Martini Reining Horses in Campiago / Mailand and won the AustrianRHA Futurity L1 and L2 last year.

Two riders tied for third place scoring a 208 each: Gal Grahelj aboard the AQHA mare MS Lea Aledo (Epitome Aledo x Chickadualsha, owner: Mojca Hrzenjak, breeder Glis Ranch) and Alessandro Dezzutto aboard Smart Baby Whiz (Spiderman Whiz x Smart Wheelin Lena, owner and breeder Rodolfo Marchetti).

rity Level 1 and 2 Open as a 3-year-old last year, Dreamin With Dot and Walter Martini repeated their success this year in the 4-year-old class. The stallion by Magnum With A Dream out of Dots Smartest Chic, which was bred by Maud Allison Deshtels in Texas, scored a 218. Walter Mar-tini operates Martini Reining Horses in Campiago / Milano.

The Reserve Futurity Championship in Level 2 was claimed by Dennis Schulz aboard Whiz Smart Orima (Lar-edo Whiz x Authentic Smarima) who scored a 214.5. The stallion was bred and is owned by Helmut Schulz. Barbara Hengge and Harald Platteter’s Smart Chexaco Jac (Smar-tin x Miss Chexaco Jac) followed on third place in Level 2 with a 213. Dennis Schulz is a multiple Bronze Trophy and European Champion, Austrian Maturity Champion and Austrian Champion. He is a triple Austrian RHA Futurity

Limited Open Champion as well as an Intermediate Open Champion.

In Level 1, two riders tied for the Reserve Championship: Juliane Rossner aboard Susanne Klaene’s gelding Whiz Night (Gunners Special Nite x Whizicle, Züchter: Equine Plus) and Lars Süchting aboard his brother’s JF What A Ruf Juice (Ruf Dun It x What A Juicy Chic). Both scored a 211.5.

Luisa Werdaner wins Non Pro Futurity 3-year-old L1

Nine horses had made it to the 3-year-old Futurity Non Pro Level 1 final, and in the end it was the best horse of the go round that claimed the Championship. 15-year-old Lisa Werdaner (ITA) and her AQHA mare Shine N Roll Spook (Smart Spook x Shining High Roller) repeated their fine performance of the go round scoring a 214 and be-came Austrian RHA Futurity Champion Non Pro L1. The mare was bred by Gregg Hill. Lisa Werdaner earned team gold for Italy at the 2016 FEI European Cham-pionship Junior Riders where she placed 6th in the individual final.

Andreas Lukner (AUT) and his AQHA stallion Onceuponastar (Spark N Whiz x Starmax RM, breeder: Massimo Rudari) placed sec-ond scoring a 213.Sara Ambrosini (ITA) and Whizard Okay (Quiet Whiz x ARC Latest Sophie BH,breeder Maurizio Ambrosini) placed third (206). Sara had with Not Quiet At All a second horse in the final.

Elena Gunter and Chic It Out claim Futurity Champion-ship Non Pro L1. 4-year-old horses

The Non Pro Final Level 1, 4-year-old horses, was won by Elena Gunter (GER) and her AQHA stallion Chic It Out (Chic Magnetic x Baby Pride Out) scoring a 210.5. With this stallion bred by Vincenzo Golzino, Elena was NRHA Breed-ers Futurity and AustrianRHA Futurity Non Pro Finalist.

Austrian Martina Zant and her stallion Dunit Yankee Style (Hollywood Yankee Kid x Zena Kaliz Dee Dun) placed second scoring a 206.5. The horse was bred by Gaby Wendlinger and was NRHA SBH Champion with her at the Whitsuntide Show. Nadine Kamintzky and The Quantum Story (Great Resolve x Surprise Me Gamble) placed third scoring a 205. The mare was bred by Davide Brighenti.

The 2016 All Ameri-can Quar-ter Horse Congress is scheduled for October 6-30, at Ohio Expo Center in

Columbus, Ohio. Para Reining will include four classes held in the Celeste center starting at 7 AM, October 9. The 50th Annual All American Quarter Horse Congress is run

Para Reining made its debut during the 2013 AQHA World Champi-onship Show, and inter-est in the sport continues to grow, including a class at the 2014 World Show, a class at the Kentucky Reining Cup and the one at the NRHA Futurity.

For 2014, AQHA ad-opted para-reining rules in collaboration with USA Reining and NRHA. Those rules will be revised with the goal of making para-reining a nation-ally recognized sport in the future.

The National Reining Horse Association’s Board of Direc-tors met on August 16, 2016 to continue guiding the future of the sport of reining as the association looks toward its next fifty years. Conducting a very successful and produc-tive meeting, they discussed numerous items including event conditions, eligibility, budget, and the IT project. Below is a summary on the action taken at this year’s August Board of Directors Meeting.

Adding additional money in the 2016 Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship classes in Oklahoma City was approved. A final class allocation will be made in the coming weeks. Check back at nrha.com for an update.

Hosts for the 2017 Affiliate Regional Championships that

were open for bid were approved. These include: Northeast – Eastern Pennsylvania Reining Horse Association, Southeast – Heart of Dixie Reining Horse Association, Southwest – Arizo-na Reining Horse Association, and Western Canada – Central Canada Reining Horse Association.

2017 Adequan North American Affiliate Program conditions were approved.

A new initiative for the NRHA Professionals was approved. In the coming year, NRHA Professionals will receive three publications with articles, tips and how-to’s all targeted to help support their role in the industry.

Spain is now an approved NRHA Affiliate.2017 NRHA Futurity & Derby conditions were approved.

2017 NRHA Nomination Conditions were approved.The presented budget for 2016 – 2017 was approved.The fees policy for 2017 was also approved. Gelding status

updates ($0) and name change ($45) fees were added. There were no increases to any existing fees.

2017 eligibility policy was approved and will be made avail-able online in the coming weeks.

With the design phase for the IT project complete, the Board approved to enter the programming and development phase. Be sure to attend the 2017 NRHA Winter Meeting so you can catch a sneak peek!

New NRHA Bylaws were unanimously voted into place. The bylaws will be available in the Members Only section of nrha.com and will be effective immediately. In a related action, the 2017 NRHA Handbook will only contain the rules most relevant to showing and the bylaws and other non-competition policies and procedures will be available online for members.

The Board also discussed several potential 2018 rule change proposals. The deadline for member submissions is December 15, 2016.

NRHA President, Rick Clark, shared his thoughts on the meeting: “I left the meeting extremely happy about what we had achieved. I’m proud of the NRHA Board of Directors for approving new bylaws that will support the governance structure that was approved earlier this year. This gives us a

more modern and efficient structure to serve our members and the sport of reining.”

“Another big step for us was approving to add more money to the Adequan North American Affiliate Championships. We will announce the specifics in the next week, but this year’s contestants will be running at approximately $40,000 in added money this year. That’s about a $15,000 increase over the last year. We’ve had to make some tough decisions to stay on budget this year, and we are thrilled to be able to allocate more funds to such a vital part of our industry,” stated Clark.

The board’s next face-to-face meeting will be held during the 2017 NRHA Winter Meeting in Fort Worth, Texas. The meeting is scheduled for February 8-12, 2017 at the Shera-ton Fort Worth Downtown Hotel. It will include the Hall of Fame Inductions, Annual Awards Banquet, NRHA Executive Committee meeting, NRHA Board of Directors meeting, RHF Board meeting, Professionals Summit, Annual General Mem-bership Meeting and several NRHA Committee meetings.

RAM INVITATIONAL FREESTYLE REINING

The National Western Stock Show is proud to host one of the country’s premier freestyle reining events and is pleased to announce the selection process for the 2017 event. The National Western prides itself on being the world’s premier center for America’s western heritage and riders for the RAM Invi-tational Freestyle Reining will be invited based on a variety of criteria with the intention of upholding and aligning with the quality, competition and entertainment of the event and National Western. The RAM In-vitational Freestyle Reining will consist of 16 riders competing for $20,000.

Top professionals within the reining industry will be sought each year to offer their selection advice. To be considered, please email a video or link to horseoffice@nationalwestern.com of a freestyle competi-tion run and a statement of the horse’s and rider’s creden-tials by September 30, 2016. If you do not have a freestyle competition video, you may submit a regular competition run with 1) any materials that speak to your creativity (pictures, additional videos, descriptions, etc.), 2) a state-ment of interest including initial plans for a freestyle run with music, choreography and costuming and 3) a letter

of recommendation from a horseman/woman that speaks to your potential and experience in Freestyle Reining. The selections will be based on quality, talent, creativity and entertainment value. The winner of the previous year’s RAM Invitational Freestyle Reining will receive an invi-

tation for the current year’s event. Initial invitations will be extended in November.

The fledgling National Arabian Reining Horse As-sociation that took over the ARBC last spring will make its first official appearance at the 2016 High Roller Reining Classic, September 9th through 17th, at the South Point Equestrian Center, Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas’ premiere horse event center.

For the new company, the first order of business at the HRRC show involves the much anticipated Youth Tourna-ment competition on the first Saturday and Sunday morn-ings. The wildly successful tournament attracted 17 teams and 60 riders at last year’s High Roller Reining Classic, including almost 20 in the 10 & Under Short Stirrup. The competition features four-rider teams of different age Youth, as well as Arabian/Half-Arabian Youth riders.

REINING BY THE BAY -SURFIN’ IN THE SAND

According to Pat Warren of Rancho Oso Rio, the Horse Park at Woodside, home of Reining By The Bay, is the ultimate place to hold a horse show. Pat should know as she’s lived near the Park for many years and, along with Amanda Brumley of Brumley Management Group, is one of the founders of the Reining By The Bay. Now in its 18th great year as the California Reining Community’s all-time favorite show, Reining By The Bay offers world class competition in the most beautiful setting imaginable. “The facility has really grown over the years,” Pat muses. “From a place of fenced, dirt fields, to a grand facility that hosts many, many shows annually in eight different arenas. They can handle #1000 show horses now. We would do even more reining shows here if we could just get the dates.”

The 2016 Reining By The Bay Show ran from July 18th through the 24th. The entire show is held outdoors, from the sunshine-filled arena with its views of the hills, the Pacific Ocean and Half-Moon Bay, to the outdoor

stabling and large, festive tents where the Johnson Culinary Group offers delectable dining throughout the show. The show offered relaxed competition throughout the week and then, really heated up the party on Friday morning when the $16,000 Added 3-Year-Old Open Futurity took center stage. Tracer Gilson won the Level 4 with Da Big Kahuna (Wimpys Little Step x Princessontheprowl by High Brow Cat). Bred and owned by Joe and Karen Moran of Laguna Hills, California, it was Gilson’s first RBB Level 4 Open Futurity win.

“We raised Da Big Kahuna here at the ranch, so it’s a particularly proud moment.” says Tracer. “We will take him to a few shows and then we are going to be at Congress with him this year. All of our riders did very well at the RBB show this year. Blair Moffet and Sheza Smart Wimpy took Level 2, 3 and 4 in the Non Pro Maturity. But best of all, our daughter Lilly won the 10 & Under Short Stirrup on Brennas Dream, a great horse generously loaned to

her by Loren Booth. Lilly loved it! It was her very first buckle. She’s been wearing one of mine for quite a while and I think she’ll probably still do that and hang the new one in her room. Lilly just turned ten and rides at least five days a week. She’ll be at the High Roller in September. She’s get-ting out of school that Friday to get there in time to show.”

On Saturday Jen-nifer Gilliam of Pine Grove, California took two horses she bought previously at auction, and posted scores sharp enough to win in Levels 3 and 4 in the Non Pro Futurity. Her 3-year-old chestnut mare, The Prima Ballerina (Top-sail Whiz x Dancer Nic by Tinsel Nic) won the $8,500 Added 3-Year-Old Non Pro Futurity. She bought the mare as a yearling in 2014 from Schmersal Reining Horses at the Legacy Breeders Sale. Jennifer then took third in the same competition with her second mare, Shine Kitty Shine (Shine Chic Shine x Cowsmart Cat by Smooth As A Cat),

a Palomino she purchased in 2015 at the NRHA/Markel Insurance Futurity Prospect Sale. Together they brought home over $4,800. “We call The Prima Ballerina ‘Abby’,” says Jennifer. “I started her as a 2-year-old but Mike Boyle has done most of the training. She is a very sound and easy mare. This was the first time I’d ever ridden her and really asked her to show. ‘Abby’ was perfect and gave me 100%. After some time off she’ll go to Idaho. I will take ‘Shine’ to the High Roller in September.”

In the $40,000 Added Protect The Harvest Non Pro Derby, Samantha Roper was a hands down winner on Big Crème Chic (Big Chex To Cash x Cremes Chic Olena by Smart Chic Olena). Samantha and Big Crème Chic were

the 2015 AQHA World Amateur Reining Champions. Coached by Andrea Fappani, Samantha and her 6-year-old gelding nearly swept the field, taking Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 and earning over $11,000 in the process. Andrea Fappani himself saved his best for last in the $57,000 Added Lucas Oil Open Derby, where he placed first and third place tie on Electric Genes, Thebettertohearuwith and Pinesail Jac, respectively. Electric Genes (Jacs Electric Spark x Taris Designer Genes by Mr Boomerjac) blew into the arena at the very end of the competition with an utterly spectacular run. The mare sprouted wings coming through the gate and then tore the ground apart. The run was fast and furi-ous, with every move perfectly executed. The crowd went crazy … and then went crazy again when they an-nounced the 230.5 score. Pat Warren, Electric Genes’ owner leaped out of her seat. Pat raised the mare and still owns her dam, Taris Designer Genes, NRHA Open Futurity Champion.

Thebettertohearuwith (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Chex Out The Cowgirl by Lean With Me) posted a 225 with Andrea for owner Bill Coburn. The 4-year-old made his debut appearance last year at Reining By The Bay winning the Level Four Open Futurity and a check for $8,298.44. Pine-sail Jac (Tinsel Jac x Sailin Lil Ruff by Lil Russ Peppy), also owned by Rancho Oso Rio, was tied for third. The 4-year-old gelding earned the NRHA Open Reserve Cham-pionship title in Oklahoma City less than a month ago. Tanya Jenkins and Tricked Out Spook (Spooks Gotta Gun x Rowdy Brinna by Rowdy Yankee) scored a 227 to take sec-ond. “This is a pretty special horse and I knew he had what it takes to score well here,” says Tan-ya. “This horse is easy,

good-minded and just a great guy. He likes his job and would rather be ridden than do most anything else.”

The Fumagellis moved here from Italy three years ago and are hoping to have their ranch ready to open its doors January first. They had a great show at Reining By The Bay. “I rode Mag-nificent Dreamer at Reining By The Bay this year,” says Ashley. “We won the Level 1 Open Derby and were third in the Level 2. The big news for us is the new ranch at 144th Street and Rio Verde Drive in Scottsdale. There’s a 40-stall show barn and a big covered arena. It’s set on 10 acres and includes an outdoor track, and 6 to 10 turn-out pens are planned as well.” Pat Fumigalli owns both Magnificent Dreamer (Magnum Chic Dream x Heavenly Rooster by Gallo Del Cielo (Rooster)) and the horse that he rode at Reining By The Bay, Diamonds In My Dreams (Like A Diamond x Brennas Dream). “When I arrived here from Milan I wanted to start my daugh-ter Michele riding with a coach,” says Pat. “We found Ashley and we’ve been riding and showing ever since. I started in the Green classes, moved up to Rookie and now I’m working at the Non Pro division. We have 8 horses of our own and will be boarding Ashley’s custom-ers’ horses as well. My daughter rides on the weekends, I ride every day and my wife is enjoying photographing the horses. I am very happy.”

In addition to being a show that makes absolutely everybody very happy and anxious to return, Reining By The Bay is a paradise of feasting for horsemen. There are few horse shows on any equine circuit that offer the exhibitor the range of food put forth by the Brumley shows in general and at this show in particular. From the made-to-order deli sandwiches, pasta and brownies at the week’s beginning, to the daily lunches of baked salmon, tri-tip and pulled pork, to the weekend’s omelet and pancake bar - cooked on request! Special meals included the Rancho Oso Rio Wine and Cheese Party on Friday evening with a splendid assortment of cheese, crackers and hot appetizers, and the annual RBB Exhibitor dinner Saturday night which featured roast beef, turkey and all of the trimmings, plus the famous RBB cakes. Along with amazing food, the show’s gently orchestrated com-

petition schedule was designed to allow everyone some leisure to visit the wonderful sights of San Francisco, Palo Alto, the beaches and parks, and the restaurants at Half-Moon Bay and Fisherman’s Wharf (as if anybody needed to leave the show and find food). Even the judges have caught on to the visiting perks.

Drake Johnson, NRHA Judge from Wray, Colorado has judged the RBB show twice and has nothing but praise for the California competition. “The Futurity hors-es were great quality, both Non-Pro and Open,” Drake says. “They were on their game and on their way to High Roller in September and Oklahoma City later in the year. It’s always such a joy to see high level animals, like the Open Derby horses work. As judges we have the best seats in the house, we just report what we see and have the pleasure and excitement of watching world class horses and rides. My wife and I also took some time and went up to Napa the day before the show started and then visited Half-Moon Bay and had some great seafood. Would I come back to Reining By The Bay? Absolutely. We would both come back.”

HORSE ASSOCIATION FUTURITY Josh Murphy thought his horse, Got That Iowa Shine, might

just do well in the 2016 North Central Reining Horse Associa-tion Futurity, held August 6 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Mis-souri trainer was right, and then some!

Murphy rode the sorrel stal-lion to a 220 score to tie with National Reining Horse As-sociation Million Rider Tom McCutcheon and Baileys Not Painted. The two shared Level 4 Open Co-Championship honors at the event. Murphy, who owns Got That Iowa Shine (Smart and Shiney x SLJ This Is My Juice x Smart Like Juice).

McCutcheon rode Baileys Not Painted by Gunners Spe-cial NIte x Darlins Not Painted by Smokin Chic Olena) for owner Turnabout Farms, Inc., of Aubrey, Texas.

The Co-Championship was worth $4,518 each.

Cade McCutcheon wins Futurity Non Pro on Sioux J Quixote

Teenager Cade McCutcheon did his father one better in the Futurity Non-Pro, winning the Futurity Level 4 Non Pro on Sioux J Quixote.

The 216 score earned by McCutcheon and the sorrel gelding by A Shiner Named Sioux out of JRC Quixote O Lena by Doc O Dynamite edged out Reserve Champion Jesse Asmussen’s score of 215.5 on Xtra Whinny Berry.

Sioux J Quixote earned $4,064 for Cade’s uncle Jim McCutcheon, of Valley View, Texas.

Justin Michels and Berry Great Juice Top Derby Level 4 Open

Minnesotan Justin Michels and Berry Great Juice by Smart Like Juice out of Berry Great Twist by Dun It With A Twist continued their winning ways to take the NCRHA Derby Level 4 Open Championship with their 219.5 score. They col-lectec the Championship, along with $2,412, home to owner Joan Julen, of Cottage Grove, Minnesota.

Last year, Justin rode Berry Great Juie to win the National Reining Horse Association Futurity Level 1 Open Co-Cham-pionship when he tied himself riding another of Julen’s horses, Cromed Out Gunner.

Dany Tremblay, of Overbook, Oklahoma, received the NCRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Reserve Championship with Misters Temptress (Mister Dual Pep x Colonel Pepinic x Smart Little Pepinic) after marking a 219. They also took the Derby Level 3 Open Championship and $2,905 for owners Amanda and Brad Kelly, of Mirror, Alberta, Canada.

Derek Heitland Wins Derby Levels 2 & 1 Open

Paige Vernon, of Ashland, Wisconsin, and Spooks For The Chics took three titles in the NCRHA Non Pro Derby.

She and the gelding by Smart Spook out of Chic In The Bar by Smart Chic Olena , a half-brother to GH Cromed Mer-cedes, won the Levels 4, 3 and 1 Non-Pro with their 216.5. They earned $2,741 for owner White River Ag Products, also of Ashland.

Shannon Kasten and Schoen Smart won the Level 2 Non Pro Championship with a 215.5. Kasten and Schoen Smart (Smart Starbuck x Schoen Melody x Heza German Melody) also were Reserve Champions in the Derby Levels 4 and 3 Non-Pro. They earned $2,145 for owner Bill Kasten, of River Falls, Wisconsin.

SHOW MANAGEMENT SEMINAR FEATURED AT TULSA REINING CLASSICAs part of an effort to improve the reining industry Pro

Management and Global Reining Sport Group partnered to put on a show management seminar at the Tulsa Reining Classic open to the public on August 30. Its mission was to take the beginning steps in allowing show managers to learn from each other about the necessities of the reining horse show industry.

“Our experience has shown over many years that because of the budget factor, work load and demands in this indus-try it continues to be harder and harder for affiliates to run the horse shows on a volunteer basis,” Colleen McQuay of Global Reining Sport Group said. “Basically this seminar really is just the beginning of creating a system allowing managers to net-work their ideas and issues.”

“The increas-ingly challenging environment impacts all horse shows,” noted Cheryl Cody of Pro Management, Inc. She continued, “Making wise and exhibitor-friendly decisions is going to be the key for longevity.”

The attendees of the seminar were able to address issues within their specific regions as well as discuss solutions to those obstacles.

“I wanted to come to learn more ways to grow our show, get sponsors and other people’s views,” said Valerie Ver-non, secretary of the Eastern Plains Reining Horse Associa-tion, an attendee of the seminar. “The big thing that Colleen

was talking about was sharing our resources and I’m a true believer in a professional show management.”

With the growth of the sport of reining show management teams, whether that be volunteer or a professional team, are subject to bigger demands than in years past. As a response to the rise McQuay said the industry is also seeing a growth in the need for professional show management teams.

One of those teams is Michele and Shawn Flarida of the Buckeye Reining Series in Ohio. Michele said the initiative to begin the Buckeye Reining Series came out of neces-sity. A group of seven couples, including the Flaridas, got

together to promote reining, because in their area of Ohio there was a lack of reining involvement. In only its second year the business has surged.

Michele was able to attend the seminar via confer-ence call and said the decision to do so was an impor-tant one to her and her team.

“I think good ideas breed other good ideas and I don’t think there was anyone better to learn from than Colleen, because of everything she’s done for the in-dustry,” Michele said. “I think it was important to get together, because what works for her there might be something that would work for us here and vice versa.

Maybe more importantly is sharing what doesn’t work to avoid any pitfalls and mistakes we might encounter.”

Ultimately, the success of the industry was by far the focus.“I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more [professional

show management groups begin], which I think is a good thing,” McQuay said. “Affiliates can certainly always be involved in their regions, but the demand of our sport now is very difficult to meet with strictly a volunteer staff which commonly rotates from year to year.
