Austrian Airlines makes applicationsfor registration and maintains aportfolio of trademarks. Improper useof the trademark will not only diluteand impair recognition, but also mayaffect our ability to protect it legally. If you notice any apparentinfringements, please contact theCorporate Identity Department. If you have any technical queries pleasecontact any of the relevant numbers listedin section 16.3.
Austrian Airlines has over many yearsregistered trademarks to protectproducts and services in support ofits marketing activities.
These registered trademarks give usexclusive rights to their use anddistinguish our products from otherairlines and businesses. In mostmarkets where people expect andeven demand standardisedmerchandise and service, thisexclusivity becomes a valuableasset. Successful trademarksbecome commercial assets in theirown right and acquire their owngood will.
Once a stylised logo for a trademarkhas been adopted, it should be usedonly in that particular form.
In text, the preferred means ofensuring that one of our trademarksis recognised as such is toreproduce it upper and lower case.for example: Austrian Airlines.

Brand signature & identity components
The brand signature for Austrian Airlinesencapsulates all the visual signals whichare key to the brand identity. It is thereforeimportant to ensure that the brandsignature is always presented correctly inits complete form.
The brand signature for Austrian Airlinesconsists of three components: thelogotype, the symbol and the underline.
All three components appear together asone locked element.
When applying the brand signature alwaysthink of it as one design element.
Always use the brand signature in itspreferred layout as shown (or thealternative layout described in section 3.2).
DO NOT re-arrange the components ofthe brand signature.
DO NOT add to, frame or ‘box-in’ thebrand signature.
DO NOT use the components individually.
For alternative layout see section 3.2.

The typographic component is one of thethree elements which combine to createthe brand signature. The typeface hasbeen carefully drawn and crafted to projectcharacteristics and qualities unique to boththe country of Austria and Austrian Airlines’approach to service, including inherentelegance, tradition, classicism, attention todetail and refinement.
The brand signature is a unique type styleand has been very carefully letter spacedfor clarity and visual balance, to ensure itslegibility at all sizes.
Always reproduce this component fromartwork/disc supplied. DO NOT attemptto reproduce this typeface from anyvisually similar serif font. Artwork is freelyavailable from the Corporate IdentityDepartment. See section 16.2 for details.
There is a gridded version shown insection 3.4 which may be used forscaling purposes where photographicenlargement is not possible.
DO NOT use the brand signaturecomponent without the symbol andunderline. Remember the company name is ‘Austrian Airlines’.
DO NOT attempt to edit the typographiccomponent to ‘Austrian’ for design orlayout convenience. It is incorrect andinaccurate to do so.
For identity construction see section 3.3.
For colour reference see section 4.1.

The company symbol is the second ofthe three component elements whichcombine to create the brand signature.
The symbol component represents akey element of continuity from the pastidentity into the new identity.
The symbol component is an arrow shapedwing. It is principally directed from left toright and always directed horizontally.(for exceptions see section 3.6).
The symbol component should notappear by itself or be used to replacethe brand signature or as a shorthandform of the brand signature.
Always reproduce this component fromdisc supplied. All three componentsappear together as one locked element.Artwork is freely available from theCorporate Identity Department. See section 16.2 for details.
The construction of the symbol isshown in section 3.4 and may be usedto reconstruct the symbol whenphotographic reproduction is not possible.

The underline component is the third ofthe three component elements whichcombine to create the brand signature.
The underline component is, in itsoptimum form, a vignette from white toblue, blending to green, then vignettingfrom green to white.
In its optimum form, it provides aninjection of the blue and green of thecorporate colour palette into thebrand signature.
The brand signature should appear infull colour wherever possible, althoughother versions exist to enable the brandsignature to be reproduced when colourreproduction processes are limited.See section 5.
All three components appear togetheras one locked element.
Never use the underline component inisolation. Always use the blue/greencolour version of the underline againsta white background.
For examples of correct & incorrect useof the brand signature against colouredbackground see section 4.6.
For details of the underline constructionsee sections 4 & 5.

Brand signature component relationships
There are two permissible arrangements ofthe brand signature (see also section 3.2Alternative arrangement).
The preferred arrangement consists of the‘Austrian Airlines’ typographic elementand company symbol on one line.
The company symbol is placed to the rightof the typographic element and points tothe right. Both typographic and symbolelements are underscored by the underlinecomponent.
This arrangement of the brand signatureshould be used wherever possible whenidentifying the international airline.
When applying the brand signature, always think of it as one design element.
Only the proportions illustrated should beused. They should not be modified in anyway.
The brand signature should always appearagainst a white background, sitting freelyin its own space, unboxed, without framesor typographic, symbolic or illustrativeadditions.
Artwork is freely available from theCorporate Identity Department. Seesection 16.2 for details. Previous versionsof the brand signature should bedestroyed and not used for any purpose.
For details of the exact relationshipsbetween elements see section 3.3.

Brand signature component relationships
In certain cases, it may be necessary to usethe second permissible arrangement.
The alterative arrangement has beenspecifically designed for use where theavailable width within a design layout areawould restrict the size and impact of the oneline preferred version.
Here the two words of the typographicelement are divided onto two lines with thesymbol component appearing on the secondline to the right of the word Airlines.
A shortened version of the underlinecomponent sits beneath the typographic andsymbol components.
By ‘stacking’ the typographic and symbolelements and shortening the underlinecomponent, the elements of the brandsignature retain their size impact within alayout where width may restrict the sizeimpression.
When applying the alternative arrangement, always think of it as one design element. Only the proportions illustrated should beused. They should not be modified in any way.
Colour preferences and specifications for boththe preferred and alternative arrangements arethe same.
Artwork is freely available from the CorporateIdentity Department. See section 16.2 fordetails. Previous versions of the brandsignature should be destroyed and not usedfor any purpose.

Brand signature component relationships
Here we illustrate the construction of,and relationship between, the threecomponents of the one line version ofthe brand signature.
Under normal circumstances it will notbe necessary to reconstruct the identity inthis manner, as the brand signature shouldalways be reproduced from disc supplied, where the components will already bepresented in this locked relationship.
However, the diagram does illustrate thelogical construction of distance betweenthe components and, in particular, theproportions of the three elements, shouldit be necessary to regenerate the brandsignature in exceptional circumstances(e.g. large scale reproduction inarchitecture, sign writing or new media).
The fully gridded brand signature may beused for scaling purposes, wherephotographic enlargement is not possible.
For information on the colour constructionof the underline see section 5.3.

Under normal circumstances it will not benecessary to reconstruct the symbolcomponent in this manner as the symbolcomponent will always be reproduced withinthe brand signature and will therefore beprovided for reproduction from disc supplied. If, in exceptional circumstances, it isnecessary to reconstruct the symbolcomponent, follow the instructions below.
Step 1 (shown in green)Draw a square representing the desiredheight of the symbol. Draw a circle from thecentre point of the square touching the fourcorners. Draw horizontal and vertical axesthrough the centre point, extending outbeyond the circle.
Step 2 (shown in yellow)The centre of the 2nd construction circle isfound at the intersection of the horizontal ruleand the first circle, to the right of the square(A). Its radius is found at the point where thevertical line intersects the square top andbottom (B). This point also forms the centrepoints of the 3rd and 4th circles to be drawn. The radius for each is found at the centre ofthe first circle drawn in step 2 (A).
Step 3 (shown in blue)The centre points of the last 2 circles can befound at the intersections of the yellow circles(C). The radius for each circle is found at thecentre of the yellow circles (B).
Now all the elements are in position and thechevron can be constructed.

The identity safe zone provides a guide tothe minimum space required by the brandsignature to retain its clarity, legibility andvisual integrity without interference fromother graphic devices, symbols, illustrations and typography.
The safe zone denotes the minimum cleararea required around the brand signaturewhen reproduced. More space ispreferable.
Other graphic elements must not beplaced within the safe zone.
In principle, the safe zone requires that adistance equal to the cap height of thetypographic component is kept clearabove and below, and half this distanceto the sides. This ensures that the type, symbol and underline components willalways appear visually locked and unitedin relationship without interference fromsurrounding graphic elements.
The identity safe zone is an ‘invisible’guide line only and is not for printreproduction. It is not a frame and shouldnot be used as an excuse to frame orbox the brand signature.
The units are based upon the same unitsof measurement shown in section 3.3 &3.3.1 i.e. X = 1/6 of small cap height.

The illustrations indicate the correct usesand present some incorrect uses of thecomponents which make up the brandsignature.
In principle, do no attempt to rearrangethe components of the brand signature tomeet perceived short-term layoutrequirements at the long-term expense ofthe brand identity.
The brand identity’s visual strength isdependant on consistency of presentation.
There should be no need to alter thearrangement of the components that makeup the brand signature.
The last two examples show the negativeeffects of boxes, borders and panels onthe brand signature.
Never enclose the brand signature in thismanner.

The ‘legal signature’ is the statement ofthe full legal name of the company:‘Austrian Airlines, ÖsterreichischeLuftverkehrs AG’ or ‘Austrian Airlines,Österreichische Luftverkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft’.
This name indicates the Airline is anincorporated company with limited liabilityunder Austrian law.
The full legal name should be used whenentering into a legal relationship withanother party. Therefore the legalsignature should appear on all businesscommunications such as companyletterheads, cheques, passenger tickets, purchase orders and all other documentsof a contractual nature.
The legal signature is presented only intypeset form and not as a logotype in aspecially designed typeface. It should bepresented as lowercase with initial capitalletters, in the company typeface Berling.
Note that the legal signature differs fromthe more familiar brand signature, which isalways presented in logotype form. The brand signature is generally used forapplications of a non-contractual nature, such as advertising, promotionalmaterials, signage and internal stationery.

The Austrian Airlines colour palette is intendedto capture the essence of Austria. Dominantuse of Alpine White is symbolic of the clean, crispness of Austria’s snow capped Alpinepeaks, while blue and green reflect the valleys, lakes and meadows of the Austriancountryside.
Flashes of red on a white base reflect theAustrian national flag.
Alpine White: Is the base colour for the Airlineidentity, providing a backgroundfor the brand identity andsupporting corporate graphicdesign elements.
Flag Red: Used exclusively for the symbolcomponent of the brand signature*.
Note. Flag red should never be used as abackground colour for the brand signature.
Graphite: Used for the typographiccomponent of the brand signature.
Note: In the two colour specification of the brandsignature, graphite will replace blue and green inthe underline component.
Lake Blue: Used exclusively in the leadingleft hand side of the underlinecomponent.

Reproducing the brand signature
For high quality reproductionThe highest possible quality reproduction isachieved using 6 colours: 4 colour processCMYK and 2 special colours. The typographiccomponent is printed in Graphite (Pantone 433)and the symbol in Flag Red (Pantone 485). Theunderline component is reproduced in 4 colourprocess using CMYK.
If only 4 colour printing is available, the bestreproduction of the brand signature is achievedby substituting Graphite (Pantone 433) for black(ie. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Pantone 433). Thetypographic element prints solid Graphite(Pantone 433), instead of 94%K, 34%C, all otherelements print using standard CMYK tints. If you are restricted to standard 4 colour processthe typographic element of the brand signatureshould also be printed using standard CMYKtints. See page 5.4.
• Lithography (sheet fed/web) in 4 colour process and special colours.
• Electronic/digital (RGB).• High quality decals.• Fine silk screen (CMYK).• Fine flexographic printing (CMYK newsprint).• Gravure.• Signwriting.
Always ensure that the production process usedgives the highest quality representation possiblewithin the confines of the medium being used.

For Lesser quality reproductionA second version of the underlinecomponent has been specifically designedfor areas where reproduction processesprohibit the use of the blended underline. The underline is printed from solid coloursand has tapered ends which replicate theeffect of the blended underline.
This solid underline component has beendesigned exclusively for the followingapplications:• Flexographic printing.• Silk screen (where CMYK colour
blending is not available).• Blocking.• Embossing.• Embroidery.• Signage (3D).• Signage (internally illuminated).• Reproduction onto textured surfaces.
The solid underline component shouldnever be used for:• Lithograph printing.• Electronic/digital (RGB).• Fine silk screen (CMYK).• Gravure.• Signwriting.

The diagram shows how the blend andvignettes in the underline component havebeen achieved.
Always reproduce this component fromdisc supplied. Only in exceptionalcircumstances should it be recreated and the specifications given must be followedexactly.
The vignette and crossfade have beencarefully designed to achieve the correctdensity of colour along its length. Thediagram shows accurately the colourdensity and percentage of ink/paint. Theends of the underline fade to white.DO NOT change the ends of the vignetteto end on minimum dot as this gives ahard edge which is undesirable.
90% of the solid colour is used as thisallows a smoother blend between the blueand the green.

Reproducing the brand signature
The diagram shows how the blend andvignettes in the underline component havebeen achieved for mono reproduction.
Always reproduce this component fromdisc supplied. Only in exceptionalcircumstances should it be recreated andthe specifications given must be followedexactly. The vignette has been carefullydesigned to achieve the correct densityalong its length. The diagram showsaccurately the density and percentage ofink/paint. The ends of the underline fadeto white. DO NOT change the ends of the vignetteto end on minimum dot as this gives ahard edge which is undesirable.
100% solid colour is used in the centre ofthe blend.

11.1The contemporary double-breasted suit inclassic marine blue is now worn with awhite shirt and flag-red tie. This extrovert red lends the overall lookcrispness and links the design with therest of the collection.
The insignias of rank are woven in white-gold to complement the new range. The flag-red chevron symbol with white-gold wings adorns the markedlycontoured pilots’ cap and the breastpocket of the suit jacket. To enhance thismodern look, the material, cut and colourof the red jacket complement the elegantoverall concept.

An important aspect of the ladies’collection is the fact that a number ofgarments for cabin and ground staff havebeen designed as interchangeableoptions.
For instance, staff may choose betweenskirt or trousers, both of which areavailable with or without front pleats.Likewise, there is a choice between bodyor blouse, either with long or shortsleeves. Shoes are available in differentheel heights and widths, so as to ensurethe necessary safety and comfort. Thoseserving in the summer and in hotterclimates have the choice of two naturalshades of tights, or the opaque red tights. For the winter months the opaque redtights set off the ensemble particularlywell.

The most striking feature of theappearance of the ground staff and malecabin staff is the red blazer. They createthe link with the women’s look and at thesame time make a bold, modernstatement on behalf of their wearers andthe company. A white shirt, silver tie andanthracite trousers with black shoes andsilver buckles are the classic combination. The image is rounded off by the red linedjacket. When the waistcoat is not beingworn to set off the blazer, it is the in-flightservice uniform. The white bistro jacket isonly worn on long-haul flights in the GrandClass.

In this area, safety and practicality are thetop priority. Solutions have been found forall areas, activities and weather conditionswhich meet the exacting technicaldemands made of them.
Flag-red combined with silver-grey is theunifying factor which, together with topquality tailoring and materials, giveswearers a heightened sense of esprit decorps, as well as making them easilyvisible. This systematic concept has, forthe first time, given all staff a place in aunified Corporate Design that carriesconviction.

Signage
The application of signage is divided intotwo broad categories, illuminated andnon-illuminated.
In order to understand the acceptableuses of the Brand Signature in signageapplications it is necessary to readsections 2 to 6 of this Manual
The method of fabrication of the signagedetermines whether the Brand Signatureshould be reproduced with the Blended orSolid Underline Component. See Section5 for a comprehensive guide toreproducing the Brand Signature.
See the following pages for a descriptionof these applications.

Signage
(including those with accent lightingpositioned in a location remote from signitself)
Internal non-illuminated signage is broadlya direct application of the guidelinesestablished for print with the exception ofthree dimensional relief and the use ofarchitectural background materials incertain cases. Relief can be provided by i) using the thickness of the materialindividual characters are manufacturedfrom, or ii) fabricating them with ‘built up’thickness for added emphasis. Careshould be taken when producing fret cutor ‘built up’ individual characters not todistort serifs and maintain correct linethickness.
Signage characters should only be applieddirectly to an architectural surface if thecolour is very light material such aslimestone, concrete or white paintedrender. Materials such as brick, timber orstrongly coloured and textured stoneshould always have the sign applied on aback panel to satisfy the guidelinesestablished for print applications.
In order to control the use of the‘underline’ elements in the case of appliedsignage characters, the ‘solid underline’logo should always be used.
For information on the solid version of theunderline see section 5.2.
For colour palette and swatch referencessee sections 4.1 & 4.2.

Signage
Illuminated signs are implemented invarious ways, the simplest being a back litopal acrylic panel with the charactersapplied to the surface by screen printingor decal. However, in this case the‘Austrian Airlines’ characters and anysecondary text will be opaque whilst the‘chevron’ and ‘underline’ elements will betranslucent.
Larger illuminated signs should beconstructed by forming individualcharacters in aluminium or GRP (glassreinforced plastic) and installing coldcathode tubes inside the characters toprovide illumination. By spacing thecharacters off the background surface a‘halo’ effect is achieved by the lightspilling out evenly from behind thecharacters on to the background. Again, the ‘Austrian Airlines’ and secondary textshould be in a solid or opaque materialwhilst the ‘chevron’ and ‘solid underline’ is translucent.
Very large signs mounted externally (eg ontop of a building) may be internallyilluminated with opaque returns andbacks. Care should always be taken oninternally lit signs to ensure that ‘striping’does not occur from linear lamp types.
For information on when to use theblended and solid versions of theunderline see section 5.1 & 5.2.
For colour palette and swatch referencessee sections 4.1 & 4.2.

Signage
The majority of external signs would followthe construction methods outlined underthe internal signage category with thenecessary provision made for weather andwear protection.
However, certain variations may benecessary to satisfy individual applicationssuch as ‘skyline’ illuminated signsmounted on buildings. This is oneinstance when ‘Austrian Airlines’ shouldbe formed from white or opal backlitacrylic or GRP letters to achieveprominence especially at night. The‘chevron’ and ‘solid underline’ would alsobe formed from translucent materials inthe corporate colours.
It is often necessary to gain permissionfrom local or city authorities to displayilluminated signs on buildings, particularlyin historic areas, in which case all effortsshould be made to preserve the integrityof the corporate identity.
In certain cases it may be desirable todisplay a logo in three dimensional formas a projecting sign in which case thechevron may be used in backlit acrylic orGRP with silver metal or opaque materialside return surfaces to match the colourspecification in the corporate palette.
