It is with excitement and anticipation that we welcome you to Australia’s North West Expo.

In 2013 North West Expo have invested heavily in bringing up WOW attractions to this year’s event, including daily BMX stunt shows, The ENgEl Aqua-Tank Travelling Fishing Show, Celebrity fishing personalities, The Broome 4x4 and Camping Bush Stage, The New Motor and Outdoor Adventure Show, Commonwealth Bank Home Show and ABC gardener Costa geogiadis in the Bunnings living North West tent.

In response to industry demands we have also created a new Employment & Training Pavilion, proudly sponsored by Woodside.

The updated North West Expo logo has been refreshed to represent the diverse range of interests, including community, business, government, industry, and employment and training, which come together at Expo. With over 7,500 people through the gates over the weekend it is the biggest business and promotional opportunity of the year.

This year thanks to the WA State government and Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia kids are free on Sunday 5th May 2013.

Australia’s North West Expo is a not for profit organisation that acts as a catalyst for innovation, growth and networking to create positive outcomes for the whole region.

I hope you enjoy this year’s North West Expo and I will see you there.

WelcomeElisabeth lucke, President, Australia’s North West Expo

North West Australia encompasses over one million square kilometres in total from Onslow in the South all the way up to Kununurra in the North East. The areas of the Pilbara and Kimberley are diverse, evolving and bountiful territories in WA, and it is an exciting time to live and work in the region.

The inhabitants of the North West are lucky to have some world-class events on the horizon for the remainder of the year, with something to cater for everyone’s tastes. The options are endless; try engulfing yourself in the region’s art, culture and music, having a flutter at the Turf Club racing rounds across the region or take in one of the many sporting events on a dry season day.

With one of the most scenic and beautiful coastlines in Australia on our doorstep, terrain begging to be explored and natural wonders such as the Staircase to the Moon, Horizontal Waterfalls and Karrigini National Park to boast, all those living in the area should be very proud and realise how lucky we are.

In terms of industry it is an exciting and prosperous time for the region, with a multitude of new businesses and industries coming to the North West, and the established ones continuing to grow.

From the employment opportunities offered in the resources sector, to an ever-expanding tourism industry and increasing retail, construction and maritime opportunities, the world is at our feet in the Kimberley and Pilbara.

The Royalties for Regions initiative continues to offer up welcomed financial assistance from the State capital for more remote areas, with the aim of building strong and vibrant regional

communities that are desirable places to live. The State government pledge to assist with healthcare, schools and education, infrastructure and housing in the North West, and as such the good can only get better.

Add to this the WA Regional Cities Alliance, and a wholehearted effort is being made to assist regional development across the State, with the North West playing a large part.

The North West has such a multi-cultural undertone and a welcoming demeanour; it is no wonder that the region is flourishing and people all over the rest of Australia are standing up and taking note. The property market is booming, in the Pilbara in particular, while the traditional agricultural focus of the east Kimberley continues to provide sustainable employment for many in the surrounding area.

With an enviable lifestyle, beautiful surroundings, increased economic prosperity, improved education and opportunities of employment, the future looks very bright for the North West.

A bright future ahead

In 2011 Shell led the industry when it committed to develop a Floating Lique ed Natural Gas (FLNG) facilityw. FLNG allows us to access sources of natural gas, the cleanest burning fossil fuel, that used to be too challenging to produce. Shell’s rst FLNG facility will be located above the Prelude gas eld, more than 200 km off the coast of Western Australia. When built, it will be the world’s largest oating offshore facility, equivalent in length to more than four football elds. Shell’s ability to deliver this pioneering project is typical of our innovative approach to creating a better energy future. Let’s power our future with gas.

Our Mission is to provide a fully funded emergency food service

365 days a year, direct to children in need.

We are currently providing a meal service for up to 120 children every Saturday and hope to expand to a weekly Friday meal service as soon as possible with your support.

Adequate nutrition is one of the basic necessities of life! After seeing families in our community struggle to provide food for their families, for a wide range of reasons, it was clear help was needed. In 2007 our service to feed children was envisioned.

We run entirely on donations. Our dedicated team of volunteers work to raise funds, seeking donations, grants and bequests to support this important cause.

Many families living in Western Australia have chosen the fly in, fly out (FIFO) lifestyle as the best option for their family. There are many benefits that FIFO workers bring to families and communities, and a mining-based FIFO workforce is here to stay. As a community we need an approach that supports families and communities involved in FIFO.

FIFO Families is an important part of the FIFO community. Nicole Ashby, director and founder of FIFO Families clarifies the organisations role in the region.

“FIFO Families is a vibrant, growing community that spans across the country,” Nicole explains.

“In WA local groups meet on a regular basis to assist in breaking down obstacles associated with the FIFO lifestyle. Members get together to share wisdom and advice and make local connections and relationships with others who live close to them. This is proving to be very popular with over 5000 families now a part of FIFO Families.

We are very excited to be apart of the North West Expo, at an event where industry and community come together and are celebrated,” she concluded.

FIFO Families is attending North West Expo this year, with their presence proudly funded by Ausdrill, a Western Australian integrated mining and energy service group that provides exploration, mine

development, surface and underground mining, manufacturing and infrastructure services globally. If someone in your family works on a fly in, fly out basis or drive in drive out (DIDO) and you want to connect with others living the FIFO lifestyle then visit the FIFO Families stand at Expo.

North West Expo is proud to have helped broker this particular partnership between community and business, by inviting corporates Ausdrill to partner FIFO Families by subsidising their exhibit space.

Another welcome exhibitor to North West Expo is The Broome Port Authority, who are also returning Bronze sponsors in 2013. The Broome Port has experienced a marked increase in shipping activity over the last year, particularly in relation to oil and gas platform service vessels, seismic craft, and break bulk ships carrying cargo for inland resource projects. The Port continues to support its traditional customers in livestock exports, cruise shipping, pearling, Defence, fishing, charter boats and the importation of the regions fuel.

The Broome Port Authority employs approximately 70 people ranging from casual / permanent stevedores to full-time office staff, provides a 24/7 service and is recognised for its proactive approach to logistics operations. The Port is exhibiting in the new

Employment & Training Pavilion this year – so pop down and have a chat to them about employment opportunities.

Shell are also returning exhibitors and Silver sponsors in 2013. In 2011 Shell announced Final Investment Decision for the development of Prelude, known as the ‘Prelude Floating lNg Project’, Shell is the major equity holder and operator of the WA-44-l permit, an area which covers around 1,000sqkm in the remote Browse Basin, 475km north-northeast of Broome.

given the size of the resource and its remote location, development onshore was not an economical option. As a result, the gas field was well suited to development using Shell’s FlNg solution. Shell’s FlNg facility will be the largest floating offshore facility ever built.

If you are interested in learning more about Shell’s Prelude Floating lNg Project or other major projects across the North West Region, including The North West Shelf (NWS), Wheatstone or gorgon projects, pop in to see them at their stand at Expo

Mt gibson Iron, Rey Resource, Buru Energy and landcorp are major players in the future growth and development of the North West Region and are also exhibiting sponsors at this year’s event.

New Employment & Training opportunities under one roofAs the North West region continues to dominate the Australian economy; the return of business investment is driving employment growth, which combined with wages growth, is stimulating demand for goods, services, residential lots and housing - in short the North West is booming. As more people are drawn to the region, an increasing number of skilled workers are needed across a broad range of industries.

Despite the boost in opportunities there are major skill shortages in the region, with companies in the North West finding it difficult to employ and retain skilled workers. Add to this the transient nature of the workforce in some industries and recruitment can be an expensive and time-consuming for local businesses, both big and small.

Australia’s North West Expo has set its sights on helping to address the needs of businesses in the region in terms of employment, and also aims to assist educational bodies in increasing the talent pool in the area with the introduction of a dedicated Employment & Training Pavilion at this year’s event.

The New Employment and Training Pavilion, proudly sponsored by Woodside, is jam-packed with exhibitors who are dedicated to assisting people into employment, or are offering education and training solutions to broaden skillsets. The pavilion will cater for everyone from school students considering which career path to follow, right through to mature-age people who want to up skill, re-skill or who are looking to make a move into a different profession.

The State’s leading educational bodies are exhibiting, including Broome-based Kimberley Training Institute and the University of Notre Dame. A range of key universities will also be present, namely Murdoch, Edith Cowan, UWA and the University of Melbourne - allowing the people of the North West an insight into the educational options both online and on campus.

Ocean and Earth Training Specialists, who have recently won a major contract with Main Roads WA, will be exhibiting and can give you a rundown of courses run from their Hunter Street base in Broome. Statewide Institute of Training, who are also exhibiting, have a stellar reputation in Perth and have this year opened for business in Broome, with a wide range of courses available through both sites. The Port of Broome, Defense Force Recruiting, Pindan labour Solutions and Mt gibson Iron will all also be there along with Woodside, who have a focus on offering people of the region employment, with a commitment to helping workers build their professional inventory.

Woodside are the largest operator of oil and gas production in Australia, and as such have opportunities ranging from summer internships and graduate programs all the way up to management roles.

“Woodside is committed to providing employment, training and business opportunities for people in the North West,” a spokesman said.

“The proposed Browse lNg Development is expected to generate up to 6000 direct jobs during the peak construction period and approximately 400 jobs once operations begin.

“Currently, more than 100 Indigenous people are directly employed by Woodside, its contractors or undertaking traineeships with host companies under the Browse Indigenous Employment and Training Strategy.

“Woodside will aim to meet a target whereby at least 300 Indigenous people are to be employed during construction of the onshore facilities and during operations. At least 15 per cent of the total workforce will be Indigenous.”

For more information on the chance to work with Woodside talk to their team at the Employment and Training Pavilion.

With a wealth of educational and training organisations and employers themselves on show at North West Expo, you could be one step away from a new job, career or improved skillset. The first 2000

people through the pavilion will get a free Employment Training Show Bag, available from the Woodside stand.

Australia’s North West is the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy, whether it is a weekend family getaway to Middle Lagoon, a bloke’s fishing trip to the mighty Fitzroy or an meticulously planned extended trip along the Gibb River Road; outdoor living takes precedence in the North West. The NEW Motor and Outdoor Adventure Show at Expo has something to offer both the seasoned North West adventurer and those who are about to embark on their first quest into the region.

The Broome 4x4 and Camping Bush Stage will be a hive of activity all weekend, with demonstrations, discussion and Q&A sessions with the experts on everything you need to know about planning and undertaking your next trip. From vehicle recovery to meat smoking, right through to setting up camp,

bush poetry and understanding the night stars - the Broome 4x4 and Camping Bush Stage has something for everyone!

The Broome 4x4 and Camping business has welcomed new owners in March, along with a new product range that includes just about anything you will need to make tracks in the bush. Broome 4x4 and Camping are major suppliers of Ironman 4x4 motoring products, and manager Dusty Breese is looking forward to presenting at the North West Expo, and feels it will be a fun-filled weekend.

“The North West Expo is an event for all the family, and we are glad to play a part in it in 2013,” she said.

“It will also give us a chance to display the latest Ironman 4x4 products, and also show the rest of our fishing and camping gear too.”

Follow Me Campers will also be displaying their latest campervans and trailers - so all you need to do is pack up and go! Need outdoor gear such as swags, tents, sleeping bags, mobile fridges, cooking equipment or lighting gear? No problem; Broome 4X4 and Camping and Kmars have you covered.

Stop and chat to the guys at Ocean and Earth Training Specialists about their new 4WD course that will show you how to handle the region’s difficult terrain, and what to do if your trip is temporarily halted and you get bogged. Safety and planning are key parts of any trip into the wild; the Royal Flying Doctors and Australian Media and Communications will be on hand to answer questions you might have about their services or mobile and radio coverage in regional, rural and remote areas.

EXPO fishing show 21

Fishing Show @ Expo

Many people living in the North West Region will tell you that you are not a real local until you have caught a barramundi or tried your hand at mud crabbing! With so many fantastic fresh and saltwater fishing spots across the North West, it is little wonder that casting a line is so popular in the region. Whether you are out on the water every weekend or taking your first steps into fishing, the North West Expo’s Fishing Show has something for you to enjoy.

Fresh from featuring at a string of boating, caravan and camping shows across the State, the ENgEl Aqua Tank Travelling Fishing Show is hitting the road to Broome, complete with its team of knowledgeable presenters; the fishing show will feature daily in the pool area across the weekend. The very popular attraction made a brief appearance at Expo way back in 2008, and like the elusive Barra itself – has been very hard to pin down ever since.

The impressive 12.2 metre tank holds 14,000 liters water and Peter Woods, Managing Director of the Aqua Tank Fishing Show reckons its stops people in their tracks.

“The tank itself is so eye catching…Kids and adults will all stop and stare, the size of the tank and the fish swimming around is just fascinating,” he said.

“The fishing demonstrations are tailored to give people an idea of new products and how to use them; and after the presentation, they can always come up and talk fishing, share some stories and get some tips. Fishing is a great recreational pastime and great family fun, and the Aqua Tank is such a great tool to demonstrate fishing techniques. We’re very excited to be bringing the Aqua Tank Fishing Show to the North West Expo.”

Kimberley Training Institute Aquaculture Centre will be

providing the barramundi for the North West Expo’s Aqua Tank following the success of their restocking project of Dampier Creek, and key staff will be on hand to promote the new fly-fishing course on offer this year and explain what it takes to get lines wet in the North West.

Popular Queensland lifestyle program Creek to Coast celebrity and fisherman extraordinaire Scott Hillier will be at the Fishing Show too. You can catch his trick casting demonstrations and antics poolside daily.

Bit unsure of the new bag and size limits under the State fishing legislation? The Department of Fisheries will be on hand with the answers at Expo to educate those casting a line on the new rules. Or perhaps The Department of Communication and Media can offer some guidance with marine radios.

If you take your fishing really seriously and want to be part of a number of competitive events in 2013, the Broome Fishing Club are the people to talk to. With the Thready Shootout, May Day Classic, Billfish Classic and a host of other events in the offing for the remainder of 2013, it is set to be a busy year on the water. For information on how to get involved, talk to a club’s representatives at the event.

The boating and fishing show is set to be one of the most exciting exhibitions on show at the North West Expo, with a fish-mad populace ready to share stories, hints and tips.

The Barra Tank is back, along with celebrity fisherman

LOOKING FOR PLANTS?Plant an enquiry today with Darwin Plant Wholesalers

Ph 08 8988 1888 Fax 08 8988 2110Email [email protected]

Australia’s largest tropical plant nursery

Where does your passion for gardening come from?In my grandfather’s market garden in Sydney and on my godfather’s broad-acre farm in Bylong, near Mudgee, in NSW.

How did you get involved with ABC and Costa’s Gardening Odyssey?Costa’s garden Odyssey came about through a phone call from a friend who was in TV and heard there was a production company looking for a presenter of a proposed garden /lifestyle show. So as funny as it may sound, it all began with a random phone call.

How does gardening differ in Australia and Greece? There are some areas of Australia where you will

find only small differences between greece’s climate and Australia’s. let’s face it; the climate here and there has incredible extremes and the plants and people have an incredible resilience in both countries.

Does the climate in North West Australia allow us to grow exciting and different plants?Coming up here I don’t kid myself in the slightest to know and understand your plants and your environment. I am looking forward to learning about this part of the world because it is worlds apart from Sydney where I live.

The North West has a lot of dry red dirt; do you have tips for us to enrich the soil in our gardens?COMPOST COMPOST COMPOST! Everywhere I go I tell people that the easiest way to enrich your soil is to compost and the materials for doing that are everywhere around you; by that I mean in the waste bins on your street.

You are passionate about organic food – do you have any easy tips for the homeowner to have an organic diet?Think about what you put in your mouth every time you open it. Ask questions like what is in it, who grew it and where did it come from. Read the labels; your decisions made with each dollar either keeps things as they are or changes the food we have available. And the most important one is to gET gROWINg because you can do it. Anyone can do it and you can start today. And you will save a heap of money in the process of growing your health too.

Are there specific environmental challenges that the North West has to overcome?Food security is a big one. Transporting food from the east coast cannot go on forever. local food, local health is the way to go. And of course your pristine landscapes are of world significance. They need to be protected and valued as an ongoing asset for all generations to appreciate and share, not just this one to profit from.

Are there certain fruits, vegetables or other edible delights that you would recommend readers to grow? The list could go on and on, but I would say grow things you like to eat and then slowly add things to the list by challenging what you like with some new tastes and experiences. Here’s one; try growing some kale and getting into it as a green you can steam or pan-grill lightly, bake it into hot chips or use in your green smoothies.

Do you have any tips for a sustainable garden?grow the soil and it will grow your health.

Do you prefer shoes or no shoes when gardening? When I was in Arnhem land the elders there told me that some landscapes will not accept you if you have shoes on as you break your connection with the land. This struck a real chord with me and has resonated ever since. I always like walking around on the soil barefoot.

And finally, how long has it been since you have had a shave?I’ll let you work it out, but mid-November 1991.

EXPO home show 27

For those of us who remember it, the 1950’s and 60’s were the decades that saw the birth of the ‘suburban dream’; owning a home on a quarter-acre block complete with a Hills Hoist and large patch of buffalo grass for those long summer games of back yard cricket. Bliss was having the street’s only TV set and perhaps a new Holden parked up in the garage. ScholarshipsIf you have a bright child with good marks or special talents, it is worth investigating the possibility of scholarships. Many of the private schools attending NW Expo this year offer academic, music, art and all-rounder scholarships and some schools offer specialist scholarships in sport, Indigenous, science and boarding.

A scholarship can be offered along many different terms; they can be offered for a full or part reduction of tuition fees or for either the duration of the student’s schooling or for a certain number of years. Some schools apply a means test to support students who would not have the opportunity for a private school education, while others offer scholarships purely on merit, regardless of the family income.

However, gaining entry to a scholarship program is becoming more and more competitive.

Don’t forget to ask about scholarship programs when you visit schools in the Indoor Pavilion.

Parents are being offered a wide choice of educational options for their children at this year NW Expo showcasing 14 Schools from across the state. This is a great opportunity for parents and families to meet with representatives from schools including principals and teaching staff who are on hand to answer questions parents need to ask to assess a school’s suitability for their child. Use this checklist as your guide;

Individual Need 3 Does your child have a particular interest, i.e.; music, sport, languages, academic studies that you want the school to nurture?

3 Does your child have specific learning needs? 3 Does the family have particular religious beliefs or educational philosophies?

School Characteristics 3 Is it important that the school is single sex or co-educational? 3 Do you want a pre-school, a primary school, a secondary school, or a combined primary and secondary school?

3 Are boarding facilities important? 3 What is the school’s educational philosophy / values? 3 What are the facilities? 3 What is the average class size? 3 What is the school’s disciplinary code?

Curriculum 3 Does the school have a comprehensive curriculum? 3 How does the school challenge and extend students of all abilities?

3 Does the school have a homework policy? 3 What is the access to computer facilities? 3 What co-curricular activities are offered such as, sport, music

and camps? Are any of these activities compulsory? Is there an additional charge for such activities?

Assessment 3 How your child will be assessed and how is assessment reported to parents?

3 How does the school measure its performance?

Pastoral Care 3 What structures are in place to ensure a caring and nurturing environment in the school?

3 How does the school provide support for students with specific learning, language and/or cultural needs?

3 What policies and procedures are in place to ensure the safety of students such as child protection and bullying?

Parental Involvement 3 How does the school communicate with parents? 3 What opportunities are there for parents to be involved with the school through a parents association or volunteering?

Cost 3 What fee levels are you prepared to pay? 3 What are the arrangements for paying fees? 3 Are there additional costs for text books, uniforms, excursions and extra-curricular activities?

3 Are scholarships or bursaries available?

School Visits 3 Ask for a copy of the school’s prospectus 3 Check the school’s website. Some have a ‘virtual tour’ 3 If possible, make an appointment to take a tour during school hours to see how teachers and students interact.

Broome has experienced rapid and continual growth over the last decade to become one of the fastest growing towns in the State.

Broome Shire President graeme Campbell says the North West Expo is a fitting showcase for everything the Kimberley and Pilbara regions have to offer, from natural beauty and lifestyle through to tourism, commercial and industrial development.

He also stated that Broome is proud to host this significant event each year, and is leading the way as a progressive regional centre that still retains strong links to its historic and cultural history.

Some of the major projects the Shire of Broome is working on in the coming year include:

Broome2040The Broome2040 project is the most extensive

gathering of community views ever undertaken by the Shire, using a wide range of techniques and

technology. It aims to capture the community’s vision for what it wants Broome to be like by the year 2040 to guide planning and development across the next 30 years.

Chinatown Development StrategyThe Broome Shire Council has endorsed

a new Chinatown Development Strategy and Design guidelines, which will retain and reinforce Chinatown’s position as the cultural and commercial heart of the town. The new strategy was developed following extensive consultation with the community and key stakeholders, including traders, property owners, Yawuru Native Title Holders, tourism and business organisations and the WA Heritage Council.

Regional Resource Recovery ParkThe Shire’s existing Waste Management Facility

is nearing the end of its life. The Shire is now working on decommissioning it over the next two years, and setting up a new site, which will be a bigger, better and more-sophisticated facility, with a strong emphasis on recycling and reducing landfill waste as much as possible.

Town Beach Development StrategyThe Council is set to embark on the development

of a strategy to guide development of Broome’s Town Beach precinct; a site of significant historical value and interest to residents and visitors alike.

Jetty to Jetty ProjectFeasibility and detailed studies are the next stage

in the project to develop an interpretive boardwalk running from Streeter’s Jetty in Chinatown to the Town Beach groyne; the former site of the town jetty.

There is a common misconception that living and working in a remote area means a lack of services, and in IT potentially this may have been true in the past. However in the modern day North West, technology services and IT infrastructure now matches urban areas and that of the big cities.

A clear example is Telstra’s initiative to ensure that the entire great Northern Highway has Wi-Fi connectivity, with enhanced infrastructure put in place recently to make this a reality. gone are the days of no phone or Internet reception. There are obvious benefits related to emergency services and communication, but the commercial world in the North West will also be boosted by the development.

“You no longer need to go to Perth to get top-notch levels of service in the technology sector,” Nicola Walters of leading Edge Computers states.

“Business services, expertise and the ability to procure technology is available in the North West, and just because we are in a remote location does not mean that there will automatically be extra costs.”

leading Edge Computers are a classic example of a one-stop shop technology solution that small-to-medium businesses in the North West can call upon. With onsite customer audits, infrastructure design and procurement and support of all technology in their repertoire, and a reach across the whole Kimberley, it is no wonder that customers are shopping locally.

A number of the long-standing small to medium business owners in the North West still use paper-

based systems, with an ignorance or fear towards embracing technology. However, education, advice and assistance is now readily available in the region, whether it is with a simple desktop computer, servers or cloud solutions.

“Cloud solutions are the way forward in the modern day, with all your data and information stored online and not in a physical piece of computing machinery in the office,” Nicola continues.

“leading Edge are ready and able to assist clients with the leap into the 21st century and educate them on the latest technological advances”

It is all related to access of information; mobile devices like iPads and iPhones mean that sales, administration or technical staff on the road or away from the office can have access to customer records, databases and the internet. This is a highly effective tool when you consider the alternative of delving through a paper-based system.

Some companies in the North West may even have been slow to allocate their business a website, or make the most of social media. Although there is still a sense of supporting local business by going into a shop and buying something, e-commerce and having a presence on the internet cannot be ignored.

“The rise of consumer confidence in eCommerce is delivering some powerful opportunities for small to medium sized businesses in remote locations,” Chris Maher from IT Bandwagon states.

“Australians are taking to online purchasing in

ever-increasing numbers and eCommerce is now exposing many businesses to international consumers and markets for the first time. Having a physical store presence with an effective online component (a clicks and motar business model) has the opportunity to smooth out a seasonal economy like Broome’s.”

With the rise and popularity of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking websites, companies also have new channels to find and engage with potential customers, as Chris explains.

“There is more to online success than simply building a website,” he continues.

“The challenge for any business wanting to be successful in this space is to understand how consumers find, interact with and ultimately spend their money on a particular item or website.

“Most businesses now understand the importance of social media plays; however the new frontier is in the mobile space, which is playing an increasingly important role in discovering and building brands and loyal customers.”

The advantage for companies that embrace technology is clear, with real commercial benefits to small-to-medium businesses through updating their infrastructure or getting involved with e-commerce and social media; the North West seemingly have the experts in place to ensure the region is as tech-savvy as its big-city counterparts.
