AUSTRALIAN SUPER HORNET PROJECT

RAAF BASE AMBERLEY, QUEENSLAND

As replacement for the F111 the F/A-18 F Super Hornet was to become the tactical aircraft of 1 & 6 SQNs based at RAAF Base Amberley, Queensland. The replacement aircraft required new facilities to meet operational needs including Squadron Headquarters, Intermediate Level Maintenance, Logistics Support and Training rooms and spaces.

The outcome of this project was the physical amalgam of complex demands derived from operating, servicing and maintaining a modern state of the art supersonic tactical aircraft. The multiple amenities provided under this undertaking included for Headquarter facilities, simulated flight training, maintenance training, weaponry capability and ordinance handling.

External treatments needed to satisfy not only a simple aesthetic derived from the functional nature of the campus setting of the building but also the constraints of working under the flight line of an operational airbase, the higher sustainable development demands of a responsible corporate citizen and simple approach to operations and maintenance.

Engineering workshops and service spaces needed to be clean functional and efficient in layout. Spatial demands, equipment, tooling and multiple power requirements, stringent security constraints, clean working environments as well as human needs sculptured interiors

State of the art secure training areas allowed 3D simulation of training scenarios allowing trainers and learners to ‘extend’ and ‘experience’ ‘real’ situations before exposure to the demands of physical and actual application
