Coinciding with her return to the small screen, it’s been smooth sailing for Jessica Mauboy on commercial radio – but she's

tackling some new challenges.

Jessica Mauboy has always dreamed of releasing a country record. With the sounds of Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton and

Tim McGraw swelling through her house from a young age, that dream is growing stronger and stronger after years at the forefront of the pop world.

“I grew up as into a lot of country music thanks to both my parents, my Mum especially and her family are all country music lovers,” Mauboy says. “She met Slim Dusty when she was ten years old and sat on his lap and that kind of really impacted her life and her connection with music. Hearing that story as a little girl [has] impacted my life and has allowed me to do what I'm doing.”

Mauboy confirms that developments are already under way on the project. “I am starting to work on it now, but you know, it's definitely a dream of mine. I definitely want to try and make it happen collaboratively.”

Australia has become well accustomed to hearing Mauboy on our airwaves. 2008 debut single ‘Running Back’ ft. Flo Rida marked the beginning of a large collection of singles to gain the big tick from commercial, peaking at #4 on the TMN Hot 100. Since then, Mauboy’s had eight Top 5s on the chart – equal third-most of any Australian artist.

Recently, her success has extended to the small screen with The Secret Daughter, an Australian television drama series starring Mauboy in the lead. The soundtrack for the first season, released in late 2016, became Mauboy's first individual #1 ARIA album, and made her the first Australian Indigenous artist to debut at the top of the chart.

Having already experienced a taste of TV/music crossover on Australian Idol, she returns to the scene finding the unification of music and acting worlds a real kickstarter for her creativity, spawning the radio-slaying track ‘Fallin’’ and brand new single ‘Then I Met You’.

“I've always been a big dreamer and the visual aspect has always come first,” she tells TMN. “That's what's really created the story so I think within music, that's when I see colours or I hear different sounds. A lot of visuals really kind of turn up and allow me to write music, so that's kind of where it all begins."

“Radio play is just a bonus!”

But from a broader perspective, Mauboy says getting Australian music played on local radio is just as important for the community as it is for the artist.

“I grew up as into a lot of country music thanks to both my parents, my Mum especially and her family are all country music lovers.”

‘Fallin’’ peaked at #4 on the TMN Hot 100 and was the most played Australian song on

commercial radio during Survey 6.

The track has spent 12 weeks at #1 on the TMN Hot 100 Australian Chart.

Mauboy’s highest peak ever on Hot 100 was with

‘Inescapable’ at #2.

Her first and only #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart

came with ‘Burn’ in 2008.

Latest single ‘Then I Met You’ was the #1 Most Added single to

radio last week.

“When you have such a small industry in a country I think there's nothing greater than putting your own talent and your own mob into your community so that they know that their own are trying and making it.”

“It isn't easy when you're coming up against major acts,” she continues. “Whether it's radio or TV, I think there should be the rule of having all Australians come first, before any artists that are coming from overseas.”

Looking at the top half of the latest TMN Hot 100, the problem becomes more and more clear. Mauboy is one of only four Australian lead artists taking up space in the Top 50, alongside Vance Joy, Guy Sebastian and Morgan Evans – it's obvious Australian music just isn’t getting the love from radio that it deserves.

Mauboy is doing what she can to get more local artists in the limelight, whether that’s on the radio or on her TV show. She teamed up with the late Dr G Yunupingu on The Secret Daughter Season 2 soundtrack, reworking the classic ‘Amazing Grace’, and it’s only the start of her plans to introduce more

Australian and particularly Indigenous artists into the fray.

“I do love celebrating our music, for sure,“ Mauboy says. “I'd love to really expand and evolve the show and get more Indigenous artists. ... I definitely want to incorporate and collaborate a lot more if there's an opportunity the next time."

“Briggs is definitely someone I look up to, I think he's just a great man. His personality is so bright and celebrated so I'd love to work with him. I love and enjoy listening to Dan Sultan, we've definitely crossed paths before during our film Bran Nu Dae, so I'd love to get him back on board and reconnect with him."

“Christine Anu played a major part in my life growing up and I really identify with her and her style of music. I'd love to reconnect with her as well.”

AUSTRALIAN SINGLES REPORT

The clouds clear for Rudimental this week. When ‘Sun Comes Up’ was serviced to radio in July, commercial was not shy in showing its affection. After two weeks the single was tracking nicely at #23. Since then, it’s struggled to find its feet dipping as low as low as #38. Now, more than two months on, the tables have turned and ‘Sun Come Up’ is peaking at #16 thanks to a spike in spins on numerous Hit stations and KIIS 106.5.

Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran times his run to perfrection. After some months of quiet on the Sheeran front, it was inevitable that another hit was coming sooner or later. ‘Perfect’ is the latest cab off the rank and finds its debut spot at #27 this week.The track is Sheeran’s second most popular song on Spotify right now behind ‘Shape Of You’. If it all goes to plan, ‘Perfect’ will mark Sheeran’s fifth Hot 100 #1.

‘1-800-273-8255’ is riding high on the ARIA Singles Chart at #5. That doesn’t line up on the Hot 100, however, with the track peaking at #29 this week.

Charlie Puth delivers another funk flavoured number to commercial radio this week with ‘How Long’. Reaching peak levels of Puth, it’s a worthy successor to the undeniable hit ‘Attention’. Felix Jaehn treats radio to ‘Like A Riddle’ while Robin Schultz makes a solid comeback with ‘I Believe I’m Fine’, a slight change in direction from the ‘Sugar’ hitmaker!

While not officially ‘a single’, Sam Smith’s ‘Pray’ is a lovely cut off his newly announced album The Thrill Of It All.

Jessica Mauboy storms the additions this week with her late arrival ‘Then I Met You’. The pleasant number lifted from the Secret Daughter Season 2 soundtrack matched Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’ in numbers, but earned more favourable time slots. Mauboy courted additions from the Hit Regional Network, both KIIS stations and commercial Hit stations.

It did, however, miss out on that coveted Nova Network addition whereas Sheeran’s track didn’t.

Macklemore enjoys a second consecutive week in the Most Added chart following last week’s #1, though this time at #3. The adds for ‘Good Old Days’ came after his somewhat controversial performance at the NRL grand final (where the new track wasn’t actually performed), and rounds out the rest of commercial radio yet to add it.

Macklemore races up the chart with last week’s #1 Most Added ‘Good Old Days’. It moved a total of 42 places to #20 from #62. No stranger to success, Macklemore has two Hot 100 #1’s to his name, ‘Same Love’ and ‘Can’t Hold Us’.

Walk The Moon top the Hot 100 Breakers with new single ‘One Foot’. Serviced to radio less than a month ago, it looks like it could make its break into the chart soon with growing support from various Hit commercial stations.

It’s a well and truly split spins segment this week. P!NK no longer holds the majority of the commercial networks, with ‘What About Us’ only topping the KIIS Spins this week. Vance Joy has officially lost his #1 spot on the AIR Singles chart this week to the Stafford Brothers with their latest track 'Love Cliché'. While last week’s AIR charts featured five different Vance Joy tracks, this week is a different story. He’s dropped out of the Top 10 on the Singles chart all together, allowing acts such as DZ Deathrays and Samsurah the chance to move up a little higher.

Ball Park Music remain a favourite on triple j for another week with their track 'Exaclty How You Are'. It’s is sitting at #1 on the triple j Hit List and at #3 on the Hot 100 Alternative chart.

In Yolngu culture dance plays a pivotal role. There’s ceremonial dance, celebratory dance and then there’s Marryuna; to dance with no shame, to freestyle for the sheer elation of dancing.

Marryuna is the second highly anticipated single from Arnhem Land’s ascending hip hop star Baker Boy. At this year’s BIGSOUND the song was such a killa that it was performed twice to an already eager crowd who were prepared to dance even harder for his encore. Coming in hot at No.4 on the triple j UE Top Ten of 300 showcases the BIGSOUND audience lapped it up, and whether they knew it or not they were in a great state of Marryuna!
