Your opportunity to partner in the sixth edition of this essential volume on the geology of

Australia's ore deposits

History of the publicationThe volume enjoys a distinctive pedigree that dates back more than 60 years. Since first being published in 1953, there have been subsequent editions in 1965, 1975, 1990 and 1998.

Each edition has complemented and expanded upon the previous one by documenting more recent discoveries. They enjoy a long shelf life and still remain a valuable reference source for Australian geologists.

About this editionThis new edition will be the biggest yet, encompassing 100 sites arranged by major geological province, and will be up to 1000 pages in length. It will contain summaries of regional geology and mineralisation, and feature descriptions of key deposits.

Much progress has been made, with AusIMM staff now in the editing and production phases of publishing. Under the editorship of Professor Neil Phillips FAusIMM(CP), the final volume is anticipated to contain 170 papers, and features full-colour figures, location maps and comprehensive resource tables.

The total investment required to complete this major undertaking is $460,000. This is after substantial pro bono contributions from authors and reviewers. We gratefully acknowledge the principal support of Rio Tinto that enabled production to proceed, but more funding is required to realise the publication.

significance for the mining industryThere is a vital need to record Australian orebody descriptions regularly. New mines open and others close, and often it’s not possible to physically return to key areas. The volume addresses this gap by fulfilling the need for knowledge long after the trucks have moved out and the company has moved on.

Furthermore, the volume supports future deposit discoveries by helping geologists to identify recurring patterns. A mineral deposit may be discovered in one place, then recognised in another location that turns out to be a major mine. Without the sharing of knowledge of the earlier discovery, the major mine may never have eventuated.

Benefits to sponsorsBy supporting this volume, sponsors can be assured that their contribution actively sustains the vital knowledge base of the minerals industry in its most significant resource for geologists. It is not a stretch to say that organisations support their own livelihoods by supporting the volume.

Because of the volumes’ proven longevity, sponsors will enjoy extended presence among their peers, as well as a long-term association with a prestigious publication.

aUSTralian orE DEpoSiTSIn 2017, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (the AusIMM) will publish the sixth edition of its volume on Australian Ore Deposit geology.

The Australian Ore Deposits monograph will be a comprehensive data source of the great mineral resources and exploration successes of our vibrant mining industry.

From its beginnings in 1953, this volume has proven indispensable to geologists working in Australia. This is because it is the only accessible resource of its kind.

No federal or state government produces anything along the lines of the Australian Ore Deposits monograph; nor do other industry bodies. It really is one of a kind.

But, as with previous editions, we need the industry’s support to bring the project to fruition.

"Successful exploration depends not only on new technologies, but on understanding the context and configuration of the most important known ore deposits as a guide.

Our members contribute their time and expertise to create data that’s vital to understanding the geology of these deposits in the only single, accessible source."

Dr Ian Gould AM FAusIMM, Chair, AOD Steering Committee

"I was amazed to learn of the diversity of deposits and how well most of the geology has been compiled. Such a wealth of high-quality

information must certainly help any mineral explorer in the future."Prof Neil Phillips FAusIMM(CP), AOD Editor
