PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Nationally Recognised Training RTO number (22004)

Graduate Certificate in Bereavement Counselling and InterventionThe Graduate Certificate in Bereavement Counselling and Intervention (22264VIC) is a nationally accredited VET qualification designed for counsellors wishing to specialise in bereavement counselling and intervention.

Offering evidence‑based, clinical training, the GCBCI equips participants with the skills they need to better support people with complex bereavement needs and enables counsellors to specialise in bereavement counselling and intervention. The course will provide up‑to‑date training and education in applied competencies and theoretical frameworks. Participants will find themselves fully engaged through tutorials, case studies, counselling practice sessions and other forms of experiential learning.

This ten‑month, part‑time course is delivered at the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement offices in Mulgrave, Victoria, with two intakes each year (February and July).

Course fees total: $4,945.00 (paid in instalments at the start of each unit)

Further information on both courses can be found on our website www.grief.org.au or email [email protected] * Please note that pre-requisites apply.

Certificate IV in Bereavement Support – OnlineIn 2016 ACGB will be launching its first nationally accredited online course. The Certificate IV in Bereavement Support (22271VIC) is a nationally recognised, VET qualification.

The course content is offered completely online. It is expected to take between 6 to 12 months to complete. The first intake is being offered in January 2016, followed by an intake every second month thereafter.

The course is designed for those who have a role in providing bereavement and loss support. The skills and knowledge provided by the course may be for a specific bereavement support job role or to complement other job roles, such as nurses, aged care workers, counsellors and social workers.

Course fee: $3,295.00

Two one‑day, pre‑conference workshops conducted by Dr Robert Neimeyer and Dr Edward Rynearson, will also take place on the 9th and 10th May 2016. These workshops opportunities are also open to those not attending the Australian Grief and Bereavement Conference 2016.

Workshop 1: Dr Robert A NeimeyerMonday, 9th May 2016 A Masterclass in Grief Therapy

This workshop provides experienced practitioners a framework that respects the fundamental role of our presence to a client’s suffering, while helping us navigate the sometimes mysterious process of therapy, within which we sometimes perform specific procedures. It offers a set of practice principles, illustrated in clinical video, live demonstrations and experiential exercises. Pushing past the idea of bereavement support as ‘talk therapy’, we will cover methods for exploring grief-related metaphors, imagery and embodied knowing, artfully integrating visual media with analogical listening to deepen clients’ awareness of their implicit needs. In keeping with a constructivist understanding of resistance to change as a coherent expression of inarticulate core beliefs and purposes, we will consider how to invite and engage such resistance in the process of therapy, and watch this non-counteractive stance unfold in recordings of actual sessions. Finally, we will practise visual supervision of current cases to understand the problem systems in which our clients and we are enmeshed, and to imagine more constructive alternatives. Described by previous participants as ‘wildly creative, but practically relevant’, this workshop is intended to stimulate clinical creativity in grief therapy, enlivening both experienced practitioners and their clients.

Workshop 2: Dr Edward K. RynearsonTuesday, 10th May 2016 Traumatic Grief Treatment: Repair, Revise and Re-engage

Violent death presents a more complex synergism of distress than the natural death of a loved one. After violent death, accommodation includes the processing of trauma distress to the violent dying act, simultaneous with the processing of trauma and separation distress. The internalised memory of the loved one (when they lived) presents a dynamic, restorative focus that is dynamically opposed to the memory of the external trauma (re-enactment imagery of the violent dying act). The clinical task of revising the internalised relationship with the deceased and the way they died may be paramount. This dynamic is more complex than the internalised dynamic of a solitary, traumatic experience (e.g. rape or assault) that is narrowly aversive. Instead, accommodation to violent dying may be challenged by waves of re-enactment imagery complicated by remorse over failed rescue or caregiving – the memory of the life of the deceased may have been all but eclipsed by the traumatic and remorseful memory of their dying.

The Graduate Certificate in Bereavement Counselling and Intervention and Certificate IV in Bereavement Support are accredited under the Australian Quality Training Framework by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

Grief Lecture 2016: Remembering SophieOne family’s deeply personal story of loss, grief and hope.Justine and Brendon Schulz’s 18‑month‑old daughter Sophie died in a tragic accident.

Justine went to a massage appointment and took the kids with her. The massage therapist lowered the table not realising Sophie had crawled underneath moments before. What happened next was every parent’s nightmare: Sophie died instantly. When a SafeWork SA investigation was abandoned, adding anger and frustration to their grief, Justine and Brendon fought for a coronial inquest.

Those attending the Grief Lecture will hear the Schulz’s heartbreaking story firsthand.

The lecture will begin with a screening of the documentary Remembering Sophie (30 mins), followed by a presentation by Justine and Brendon, with documentary director Kath McIntyre. The lecture will conclude with an opportunity to participate in a Q&A session.
