Table of Contents Director
It is with great pleasure that I introduce the 2019 annual report of the ANZIC Research Centre.
In 2019, the Centre had 190 publications and major funding for exciting new collaborations. During this year, the Centre was leading ten NHMRC-funded randomised controlled trials in intensive care medicine.
Trial results for ICU-ROX (Conservative Oxygen Therapy during Mechanical Ventilation in the ICU, NEJM), PHARLAP (Maximal Recruitment Open Lung Ventilation in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Am J Resp Crit Care Med), and SPICE III (Early Sedation with Dexmedetomidine in Critically Ill Patients, NEJM) were presented and published.
New funding included $4.9 million from the NHMRC for a sedation study in older critically ill patients (Shehabi, Bellomo, Howe, Hodgson, Presneill, Bailey, Reade, Webb, Seppelt et al); and NHMRC Investigator Grants for Carol Hodgson (Early interventions to improve the quality of survival after critical illness) and Emma Ridley (Generation of high quality, clinically relevant knowledge to inform global nutrition practice during critical illness).
I would like to thank our whole team of wonderful staff, adjuncts, students, affiliates and visiting researchers for their dedication to our Centre and its incredibly prolific research projects and programs.

The Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre (ANZIC-RC) is the bi-national centre for the development, coordination and execution of pivotal multicentre randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in critically ill patients. The outcomes of its research have changed medical care in Australia and internationally, improved patient outcomes and lowered health care costs. The parallel role of the ANZIC-RC is a national teaching centre for doctoral, postdoctoral and international clinician researchers in critical care medicine.
It was established in 2006, with funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council and Monash University. The ANZIC-RC is part of the University’s School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. It is located within the Alfred Research Alliance, one of Australia’s largest and best supported applied research environments, in the precinct of one of Australia’s busiest hospitals, The Alfred, Melbourne.
The ANZIC-RC offers a range of services, from research advice to complete project management. Advice and assistance is available from experienced intensive care unit (ICU) researchers, data management/bio-statistical
consultants, project managers, epidemiologists and health economists. The Centre coordinates and conducts comprehensive research programs including observational studies; feasibility projects; and large multi-centred, interventional, randomised controlled trials. It has the ability to support small, medium and large clinical trials.
The principal aims of the ANZIC-RC are to:• Conduct high-impact, large-scale, investigator
-initiated clinical trials designed to determine best and most cost-effective practice in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM)
• Increase the quality of clinical trial design and biostatistical analysis in this field
• Be readily accessible to all Australian and New Zealand clinician-researchers in critical care
• Expand the national and international reach of large Australian and New Zealand led trials
• Introduce systems to integrate research results into clinical practice by promulgating research-based practice guidelines
• Develop integrated clinical research programs that provide the training ground for future clinical trialists in the field of ICM
• Encourage and support clinician researchers in research theory, study design, study conduct, data analysis and scientific writing.

Awards
Congratulations to our team members who received awards in 2019 including:
• Member (AM) in the Military Division Of The Order Of Australia awarded to Brigadier Michael Reade for exceptional performance of duty as the Director of Clinical Services of the 2nd General Health Battalion and Professor for Military Medicine and Surgery. Brigadier Reade demonstrated exceptional vision, drive and professional skill in developing Army’s operational trauma capability. His internationally recognised research enhanced the care of military personnel globally and has made a substantial positive contribution to the Australian Defence Force’s reputation. His clinical leadership was pivotal to the 2nd General Health Battalion becoming the first deployable military hospital in the world to be externally accredited at the standard of a civilian trauma centre.
• US Military Health System Research Symposium (2018) best collaboration between an academic and military research team awarded to Michael Reade and his research team for the CLIP pilot trial, the first time an Australian team has won a prize at the conference.
• Doctor of Science from UNSW Sydney awarded to John Myburgh for his outstanding contribution to the field of critical care and trauma
• Victorian Premier’s Award Finalist: Emma Ridley• BioMedVic Clinician Researcher Career Recognition Award to identify and honour individuals with an
outstanding record in patient-based research and clinical work and who are regarded as having had substantial influence among peers and colleagues, this Award recognises exemplary supervision and mentoring of other clinical researchers: Rinaldo Bellomo
• Highly Cited (HiCi) Researcher: Rinaldo Bellomo was officially named a Highly Cited Researcher for the 6th time in a row (one of only 4 in Critical Care Medicine in the world). Rinaldo is among an elite few recognized for exceptional research performance demonstrated by production of multiple highly cited papers, those that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in Web of Science.
