Our teaching advantageOur graduates learn from highly experienced academics and industry professionals who are leaders in their field. UniSA is ranked as the number one young university in Australia for teaching quality in the 2018 Times Higher Education Young University Rankings.

UniSA is also home to Australia’s most internationally diverse group of academic staff and ranked 11th in the world in the 2019 QS World University Rankings. Our teaching staff provide graduates with global knowledge and the most current industry practices.

Experiencing the workplaceOur graduates move seamlessly into their professions and are highly adaptable to the changing global landscape, because we embed practical experience into every program. This includes internships and placements, real-world projects, industry and employer masterclasses, and opportunities to take part in community programs.

Our health science students alone undertake more than one million clinical placement hours each year, and our nursing school is one of the nation’s largest producers of highly capable nurses and midwives.

Our approach to learning

Improving accessOur commitment to equity in access to education is a cornerstone of our foundation and future, underpinned by our founding Act (1990). In 1993, we were the first university to appoint a Pro Vice Chancellor with the task of improving access to tertiary education. Since then, we’ve made university study a reality for thousands of students from a wide variety of backgrounds through initiatives such as UniSA College, on-campus regional study options, support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and students with disabilities and learning difficulties. UniSA College in particular offers tertiary preparation programs and has a dedicated team, UniSA Connect, who visit schools and the community to encourage students to pursue further study.

Flexible and online learningWe are committed to building an engaging curriculum, supporting our students to be productive professionals in a digital age, expanding our flexible learning arrangements, developing our academics to be leaders in the digital learning experience, and inspiring the broader University community through lifelong learning. UniSA Online is part of our digital success, offering 100% online degrees in 12 discipline and career areas.

Inspired by challenges

Research at the University of South Australia is inspired by challenges and opportunities, partnered with industry and communities, and underpinned by excellence. Our academics engage in interdisciplinary teams to translate their research into meaningful outcomes.

Contributing to a research environment that is vibrant, responsive and outward-facing are the University’s research themes. The themes link our research strengths and address local and global socio-economic needs.

> An age friendly worldUnlocking human potential across the community through intergenerational approaches.

Research in the spotlight

National education transformation UniSA researchers have fundamentally re-written the national paradigm for how we teach languages on a national scale. Beyond what is taught and how, the research has also had profound influence on national policies, assessment of language learning and teacher standards for language education. This has given Australia’s 9,000 language teachers the first unified guidelines for engaging with student cohorts.

Remediating the future For 15 years, our researchers have been collaborating with industry to improve land remediation processes. In Australia, remediation is a $2 billion industry annually and is used across mining, intensive agriculture, urban development and waste management. The new highly accurate and reliable assessment tools have enabled environmental agencies to determine far better solutions for managing soils without comprising human health and safety; and have already delivered savings of $749 million worldwide.

Ready for combat Saab Australia and UniSA are collaborating on the design of new combat consoles for Australia’s fleet of submarines and ships, bringing together the knowledge and design of defence technologies with industrial design capabilities and expertise in human factors. Saab has been selected to provide the combat management system and tactical interfaces for all ships in the Royal Australian Navy and the research group will be based at our Mawson Lakes Campus.

World-class vaccine innovation In a highly successful collaboration with Sementis Limited and QIMR, UniSA researchers have developed new technology set to deliver vaccines for many diseases and conditions that are more effective and accessible. The new altered vaccine has been tested in preclinical proof of concept studies and has been shown to provide protection against serious infectious diseases, including the mosquito-borne Zika and Chikungunya viruses.

Creative minds Creativity is often considered an art over science, yet both are needed in order to deliver advertising success. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science is leading the charge with research that focuses on the development of empirically grounded knowledge that helps brands to understand the mechanics behind marketing and how to spend their advertising dollars in the right way.

War on cancerUsing advanced computing simulation, UniSA’s world-leading radiation oncology and radiobiology researchers can analyse and predict the combination of treatment for hard to treat cancers. Our technology allows us to grow biologically correct tumours that represent a patient’s cancer, to measure how quickly it will grow and how aggressively it may spread. By predicting the best treatment plan and providing the right schedule and dose that will target the cancer while sparing healthy cells, we are one step closer to winning the war on cancer.

Closing the gap

We have a proud history in Aboriginal education, embedding real and measurable actions within our institution, and extending the process of cultural change to strengthen our position as the University of Choice for Aboriginal Peoples.

In 2014, we released our first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). A framework for building relationships, deepening respect and providing more opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Since then, we have continued to grow as an inclusive institution. We have implemented major reform for Aboriginal education, developed new economic partnerships with Aboriginal organisations, and created a leadership position directly responsible for Aboriginal engagement and strategy at the senior management level.

Through the release of our Stretch RAP, we are continuing to build on our track record of achievement and challenge our understanding of reconciliation.

CareerTrackers Indigenous Internship Program In 2017, UniSA announced a ten-year partnership with CareerTrackers – a non-profit organisation that creates internship opportunities for Aboriginal university students, which align with their degree and career passion. It is aimed at supporting students by linking them with private sector employees to participate in paid multi-year internships, and full-time employment upon completion of their degree.

Aiming for successThe Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) is based at the University and provides Aboriginal high school students with the skills, opportunities, belief and confidence to finish school at the same rate as their peers.

Aboriginal Pathway ProgramThe Aboriginal Pathway Program is offered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through UniSA College as an alternative pathway into a degree or diploma with UniSA. The program is free and provides additional support to help students succeed at the tertiary level.

Breaking groundTrevor Ritchie made history when he graduated from UniSA’s Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) and became SA’s first identified Indigenous occupational therapist.

“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of closing the gap in Aboriginal health inequality, but I’m committed to playing my part.”
