    Australia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising thelarge island continent of Australia, the island of Tasmania andnumerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

    Australia has six states, each of which has their own democraticparliament -- New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia,Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. Australia also hastwo major mainland territories -- the Northern Territory and theAustralian Capital Territory (which contains Australia's capitalcity of Canberra).

    The tadpoles turn

    into Froglets. The bodyshrinks and legs form.

    The Froglet's tail shrinks, thelungs develop and the back legs

    grow and then we have aFrog.

    Amphibians must shed their skinas they grow. Usually the shedskin is eaten. Yum!

    The monarch butterfly is sometimes calledthe "milkweed butterfly" because its larvaeeat the plant. In fact, milkweed is the onlything the larvae can eat! If you'd like toattract monarchs to your garden, you can tplanting milkweed (if you live in the rightarea). You can purchase milkweed seedonline from Butterfly Encounters(closewindow when done purchasing to return to thisscreen)

    Adult female monarchs lay their eggs on thunderside of milkweed leaves. These egghatch, depending on temperature, in three twelve days.

    e larvae feed on the plant leaves for about twoeks and develop into caterpillars about 2hes long.

    After awhile, the caterpillars attachthemselves head down to a convenient twthey shed their outer skin and begin thetransformation into a pupa (or chrysalis), aprocess which is completed in a matter ofhours.

    The pupa resembles a waxy, jade vase anbecomes increasingly transparent as the

    process progresses. The caterpillarcompletes the miraculous transformation ina beautiful adult butterfly in about twoweeks.

    Still can't tell them apart? Notice that black stripe on the bottom wingsof the Viceroy. That's the give-away! It's easily seen in the photos, butbirds flying overhead looking for lunch cannot distinguish between thetwo.
