Dear Ambassador TWEDDELL,
Greetings from GREGORIO OCA LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT (GOLD)!
GOLD is a non-profit organization that aims to be the leadership institute to help the Philippines
transform into how Captain Oca developed the maritime industry - from an ordinary to an extraordinary
industry. GOLD will produce extraordinary leaders who can change the country beyond what is expected
from it.
Captain Gregorio S. Oca was the perfect example of a transformational leader instinctively switching
styles according to the people he led and the work that needed to be done. He was a pivotal figure in
the maritime labor sector, serving as a voice for the seafarers and a bridge between them and the
international seafaring community. Without him, the Associated Marine Officers and Seamens Union of
the Philippines (AMOSUP), Seamens Hospital, Seamens Village, and many others, would have not been
possible. Captain Oca accomplished all this by first establishing trust, then made it a point to balance the
needs of the organization against the needs of his team.
People with this transformational leadership style are true leaders who inspire their teams constantly
with a shared vision of the future. GOLD will be the avenue that will produce the transformational
leaders, who will be the successors of the new league of maritime industry leaders.
With this, we are pleased to inform you that GOLD will have a one of a kind HISTORY MEETS PRESENT
FORUM, which aims to promote mentorship within the maritime industry. Mentorship is one of the
advocacies of GOLD. Maritime student leaders and young maritime professionals will have a chance to
absorb the wisdom of industry pillars, who have years of successful experience to share with their
successors. The event will be held on October 24 and 25, 2012.
The first day will be a GOLD Communication and Mentorship 101 workshop led by Ms. Lilet La Vina, a
communications specialist who has led seminars for Thomson Reuters, Manulife and the 1st
International Seafarer Family Convention to name a few. She is also a columnist for the Classifieds
Section of Manila Bulletin. GOLD will also be inviting business and political leaders, who have strongly
supported the maritime industry.

The second day will be a presentation of different government and private organizations who closely
work with maritime student leaders and young professionals. The culminating activity will be cocktails
with successors and industry pillars in Museo Marino, the first museum focusing on the success of
collective bargaining agreements in the maritime industry. Through this venue, GOLD highlights howCaptain Oca introduced tripartism in the maritime industry.
Also, GOLD will launch the prestigious GOLD MENTORS SOCIETY, which will be composed of current
influential maritime industry leaders willing to pass on the passion to their successors.
In this regard, we in GOLD would like to present to you, details of the organization and the pilot projects
of this institution. We also would like to request your participation as a guest during the GOLD
MENTORS SOCIETY COCKTAILSthe forums culminating activity.
