    Foreword

It gives me great pleasure to con-

    gratulate the Australia India Business

Council on the publication o Australia

    India Business.

    The Australia-India relationship is

one o the great opportunities o this

century or both nations. We already

    enjoy strong economic, cultural and

strategic ties. Indias rapidly emergingeconomic strength, recording growth

    rates averaging 8-9% per annum,

    reinorces this opportunity. As this

    extraordinary growth continues, the

    relationship will become even more

    important.

Two-way tradeBilateral trade and investment links

are already well established. India is

    Australias sixth-largest and astest-

    growing export market, with two-way

trade in goods and services worth A$12billion in 2006. There is strength in services

such as tourism and educational services,

    as well as primary industries.

Clearly, Australia is ideally placed to

supply the energy and resources, and

many o the services, India will require

    to continue its impressive economic

    development. Environmental sustain-

ability will also need to be a key theme.

Linking peopleHowever, trade and investment is

only part o the larger story that oour strong people-to-people links.

This is what will ultimately serve as the

    oundation o our bilateral relationship

    in the years to come.

    The Indian community in Australia

makes a signifcant contribution to the

cultural diversity in which our country

takes great pride, being the sixth-largest

    source o overseas-born Australians.

O course, it would be remiss o me

to neglect to mention the ties o cricket,

which will be renewed once again this

summer with the visit o a very strongIndian team to our shores.

    Approximately 40,000 Indian students

    are currently enrolled in Australian

educational institutions. India is also one

    o Australias astest-growing tourism

markets, with Indian visitor arrivals being

projected to grow at an average annual

rate o 18% over the next decade.

Early daysAs many contributors to this publi-

cation will note, it is still relativelyearly days as ar as the Australia-India

    trading relationship goes. However,

while we may have taken our time to

establish the links that economies o our

respective sizes would expect to share,

it will be the object o my government

    to make up lost ground.

Without a doubt, the Australia India

Business Council will play a signifcant role

    in acilitating the ongoing improvement

in Australias trade and investment ties

with India. As India grows, we believe our

relationship will grow with it.I am looking orward to the bright

uture Australians and Indians can hope

    to share together.

    Foreword

Iam happy to learn about the initiative

o the Australia India Business Council in

    producing the Australia India Business

    publication.

    Relations between India and Australia

    have strengthened in recent years.

    Besides high level political contacts,

    our economic engagement has been

particularly impressive. There is, however,a large untapped potential, which our

two economies need to jointly exploit to

    mutual beneft.

Engaging partnersDuring the last iteen years, the

    Indian economy has registered high

    growth rates, accompanied by rapid

    development o its services and

    knowledge sectors. The new economic

    and technological capabilities o India

enable it to eectively engage with

international partners in enhancingtrade, investment and other orms o

    economic cooperation.

I welcome the act that Indian business

and industry is seeking partnerships with

    their Australian counterparts, and that

    Australian business is also discovering

the possibilities that are opening up in

    India.

    Opening doors

I hope that the activities o theAustralia India Business Council will

open doors or our two large countries

to better understand and beneit rom

    each others mutual strengths and

    complementarities.

I see a bright uture ahead or Indo-

    Australian cooperation based upon

    shared values, increased people-

    to-people contacts, and greater

    connectivity.

    Foreword

It is generally accepted that India is

    currently the worlds largest democracy

and, with a young and expanding

population, is poised to become the

worlds most populous nation by 2030.

Its economy is growing at well over 8%

per annum and its strategic importance,

    both geographically and economically,

is recognised by all.In 1986, the then Prime Ministers o

Australia and India, the Hon. Bob Hawke

and Mr Rajiv Gandhi, together recognised

the importance and potential or trade

between the two countries. This mutual

recognition gave birth to the Australia

India Business Council (AIBC), in the orm

    o a national business organisation.

Federal GovernmentcommitmentThe visit to India in 2006 by the

Australian Prime Minister, the Hon. JohnHoward, and the high level business

    delegation that accompanied him,

marked the resurgence o the Federal

    Governments commitment to the

    strengthening o relations between the

    two countries.

This was relected at the business

level with the Trade and Economic

    Framework Agreement which was an

outcome o the Joint Ministerial and

Business Council meeting in Sydney in

    2005.

The AIBC is now widely recognisedby governments and the business

    community as the peak bilateral

    business association in Australia or

    promoting and supporting trade and

    investment between the two countries.

It is the only national non-government

    business association devoted solely to

    promoting, developing and maintaining

    bilateral trade and business relations

    between Australia and India.

In 2007, the AIBC led the largest

    business delegation accompanying

the Minister or Trade, the Hon. Warren

Truss, to India or the Joint Ministerial

Business Council meeting in New Delhi.

In addition, over the last three years, the

Premiers o each State have led tradedelegations to India and the AIBC has

been closely involved with these, as

    well as hosting incoming delegations

    and business groups to Australia.

A sustainable relationshipAll o this points to and is testament to

    the increasing and sustained business

and trade relations between the two

    countries. The AIBC strongly believes

    that Australia can accelerate and

maximise the beneits o its links with

India and develop a relationship thatis both sustainable and o enduring

    strength.

Recent change to the AIBC con-

    stitution, establishing State Chapters,

has enabled businesses in all the States

to beneit directly rom this period o

    increased engagement with India. The

AIBC provides a link between business

    and State governments interested in

    exploiting the potential or bilateral

    trade.

    The publication o Australia India

Business, which the AIBC has oiciallyendorsed, will be o great beneit in

    providing current inormation, which

is o interest and relevance to business

and government at both State and

Federal level in this country and

    overseas.

    Australia can

    maximise the

    benefits of its

    links with India

    and develop

    a relationshipthat is both

    sustainable and

    of enduring

    strength.
