Meal in a Bot t le shakes up the break fast industr y

Australian owned company Slim Nation is shaking up the breakfast aisle with the national launch of its Meal in a Bottle product, giving meal skippers a healthy and convenient alternative to “drinking dessert” options.

Meal in a Bottle is the only liquid breakfast product nutritionally sound enough to be classified as a meal replacement under Australian law, has no added sugar, and contains 18 vitamins and minerals.

The product was created by entrepreneur Aaron Zamykal, who says his fast-paced work life left him with no time for breakfast and many quick meal alternatives were equivalent to eating six teaspoons of sugar per serve.

“A recent investigation by Choice into 23 liquid breakfast products found “dodgy” nutritional claims and concerning sugar levels.

“My product development philosophy is simple; make it quick and make it healthy,”

Meal in a Bottle comes in a 290mL bottle and is available in coffee, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla.

The product is available in the chilled section in IGA and independent supermarkets nationwide.

Australian sports drink Staminade is a bargain compared to its foreign competitors Gatorade and Powerade A single tub of Staminade powder makes 15 x 600ml bottles from a $10 tub.

That’s 67c per 600ml compared to the US versions that retail for around $3 per bottle.

Staminade is the only sports drink concentrate on the market, formulated to give you a performance lift and faster recovery after intense body workouts.

Because it’s an electrolyte drink, and an isotonic drink it works to rehydrate and replenish lost energy and lost electrolytes.Just what you need for a long hot summer with plenty of exercise.

Staminade is made in Australia by Steric Trading Pty Ltd a family-owned company started in 1964, based in Sydney’s western suburbs.

SPC ' s 10 0 % Baked Beans produc t

Canned food brand, SPC, has launched a 100 percent Australian grown baked beans product.

The first brand to do so, SPC has partnered with farmers and the local industry to ensure enough navy beans are grown to guarantee supply.

SPC is sourcing its beans from the Queensland town of Kingaroy, as well as Atherton in far-North Queensland and the Riverina district in NSW. The tomates in the red baked beans sauce are from Goulburn Valley in Victoria.

austral ian veget able pr ices drop 10 .7 per cent in a year

The Consumer Price Index for vegetables, which was updated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on 23 October 2013, has shown a fall in vegetable prices for the last quarter.

This quarter’s fall in vegetable prices of 4.5 per cent came after an increase in the vegetable price of 3.3 per cent in the previous quarter.

Vegetable prices are now 10.7 per cent lower than what they were a year ago and continue to provide consumers with extremely good value for money.

The last time vegetable prices were this low was back in the last quarter of December 2010.

Australian vegetables are regarded as among the safest and highest quality around the world, so following this new information, we would hope to see an increase in consumption of Australian vegetables.

Woolwor ths announces $2 .26 b i l l ion prof i t for 2013 at i ts aGM

Australian supermarket group Woolworths Limited (Woolworths) announced Net Profit After Tax of $2.26 billion — up 24.4 per cent on the previous year, or an increase of 8 per cent from continuing operations and before significant items.

IG a suppl ier Metcash

The major supermarket chains have persisted to distort the market with cross subsidisation through their domination in grocery and fuel,” Metcahs MD Mr Morrice said.

“The use of market distortive devices such as fuel shopper dockets, particularly at excessively high predatory levels, makes it very difficult for independent retailers to compete on a level playing field.” he said.

During the first quarter of the 2014 financial year, 21 new stores were added to the IGA network, with another 24 due to be completed by the end of the financial year. Metcash said that when conversions and extensions to existing IGA stores were taken into account this meant an additional 27,151 square metres of floor space was added during the first quarter of the 2014 financial year.

Sof t dr ink s losing favour with younger austral ians

In the 12 months to June 2009, around two in three Australians aged 14 to 25 years or 25 to 34 years had some soft drink in an average week.

But by June 2013, the consumption rate in each younger age bracket had declined 9 per cent to 56 per cent for the 14 to 25 years age bracket, and 57 per cent in the 25 to 34 years age bracket, according to Roy Morgan Research.

The decline in overall consumption equates to around 5 million fewer glasses of soft drink being drunk per week by Australian under 35 years.

Send them broke , then buy them cheapIn 2013 Woolworths has undertaken several initiatives to stock more Australian products. Australian Food News reported in August 2013 that Woolworths had signed a $7 million deal with Australian food manufacturer SPC Ardmona to supply fruit for the supermarket’s Own Brand. The supermarket also signed a deal to source 100 per cent of its Select frozen vegetables range from vegetable processor Simplot Australia. These are the same companies that were driven to bankruptcy because Coles and Woolworths imported product from China!

Petrol cuts stopAustralia's two supermarket giants have limited their fuel discounts to four cents a litre. Small retailers have long argued Coles and Woolworths are exploiting their market dominance by offering discounts to spike to between 20¢ and 40¢.

Talk on the sale of Australia’s biggest independent fuel supplier and retailer has gone quiet since the end of October, when bids were said to have closed,

Caltex is understood to have made two bids for the assets.

Dutch-owned Puma Energy bought Ausfuels for $625 million earlier this year.

Consumer s lose interest in Coles pr ice drop campaignThe number of consumers who associate Australian supermarket group Coles with low prices has dropped in the last twelve months, according to findings from market research organisation Roy Morgan Research.

Online shopping boomsAustralian online retail sales rose to $14.4 billion in the year to October 2013, a level that is equivalent to 6.4% of traditional retail spending. Domestic retailers continue to control the largest share of online sales, at around 73%, with growth in the Groceries & Liquor and Homewares & Appliances categories.

T he good o i lAustralian consumers buying imported olive oil are being duped at the checkout with up to nine out of 10 imported olive oils failing Australian standards and being labeled incorrectly. Testing by the Australian Olive Association between September 2011 and August 2013 found of 106 imported oils tested representing 40 different brands, 77% of oils tested failed the Australian Standard AS 5264-2011 and 93% of brands tested failed the Standard for at least one product of their range.

The Buy Australian Olive Oil campaign commences on December 1 on TV, radio, press, social, digital and a PR campaign (The Australian Olive Association, December 1).

SPC ardmonaSPC also recently informed 170 of its Goulburn Valley growers that it no longer required their produce, blaming the high exchange rate and a decline in export markets.

Grocer y sales grow th slows downThe Australian grocery market grew 2.7 per cent to $22 billion in the 12 months to October.

AUSTRALIAN MADECampaign calls on consumers to buy Aussie throughout January in celebration of Australia Day

The Australian Made Campaign is calling on consumers to ‘Make Every Day Australia Day’, and celebrate Australia’s delicious, nutritious food and high quality products throughout the month of January.

Australian Made Chief Executive, Ian Harrison, said the initiative was aimed at tying great Aussie traditions, like backyard barbeques, together with Aussie-made and Aussie-grown products.

“Our research shows purchase preferences are evolving towards locally made and grown products, and the ‘Make Every Day Australia Day’ initiative encourages consumers to keep those behaviours up, and put particular emphasis on shopping local in January – and beyond wherever possible,” Mr Harrison said.

“When you buy genuine Aussie products, you back Aussie farmers and manufacturers, so not only are you getting great value for money, you’re also giving local industry a much-needed leg up.” Mr Harrison said that consumers should look for the green-and-gold Australian Made, Australian Grown (AMAG) logo to be sure what they are buying has genuinely been made or grown in Australia.

The AMAG logo is the only registered certification trade mark for country-of-origin claims, and as such products must meet a strict set of criteria before using it. “Be sure to check your labels and shop around,” Mr Harrison said.

The ‘Make Every Day Australia Day’ campaign will run nationally throughout January. To find out more and learn about events you can participate in, visit http://www.australianmade.com.au/latest-news/2013/make-every-day-australia-day.

How many times have we heard reports that another Australian is losing their job to an overseas worker! Ford and Holden have both announced plans to close manufacturing facilities here in Australia.

Now Kelloggs have decided to close one of their manufacturing plants in regional NSW to reduce costs and move to a country that will deliver them increased profits.

So what does this mean for us? According to Dick Smith Foods: “85% of the products in the average Australian grocery trolley are made by foreign owned companies. This results in $100 million a day going outside Australia.ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLORS!!!

T he Buy austral ian Brands campaign

Have you noticed that Australian brands are disappearing from our lives every day?

This is a symptom of something terrible and maybe irreversible happening in our economy.

Every time a brand disappears hundreds of jobs disappear too, along with the factories that make them and the investment required to create new jobs for the future.

lets look at the manufacturing industry as if it was an eco-system.

The trunk and branches are jobs and the leaves are products we buy everyday.

The deep root system is the financial support that nourishes small businesses such as local supermarkets, retailers, accountants, hairdressers, bike shops and cafes.

Right now the manufacturing eco-system is showing serious signs of strain and this is spreading into the broader business sector.

If we lose too many brands the manufacturing eco-system fails and the industry tree dies.

We have lost 150,000 manufacturing jobs in the past five years – that’s 72 a day - and many thousands more are expected to go in coming years.

Industry is dying because of government policy that sells off our businesses and allows Australian brands to be replaced with imported goods - this is reinforced by a competition policy that gives our farmers and manufacturers just two markets to sell 80% of their goods.

This limited market allows brands to be cut and products to be replaced by home brands or imports at the whim of the major chains.

Some supermarkets try and tell you that buying home brand Australian products is just as good as buying a brand. It is not.

Home brands drive out choice for consumers and decrease profits for manufacturers.

They also stifle the creativity required to make a business thrive and eventually Australian made home brands are replaced by imports and the factory closes anyway.

This just leads to more imports. Today everything from a million cars a year to tinned fruit and toilet paper is coming in on huge ships that undermine our economy each time they unload at our ports and return empty.

We need Australian brands to fill these ships with quality products to sell to the rest of the world. So how do we maintain Australia's agricultural and manufacturing industries for the future?

Consumer power. Buy Australian Brands. You don’t need to spend more just buy Australian made

Consumers – that’s YOU - hold the future of our industry in their wallets and purses.

If we all bought ONE MORE Australian branded product each time we shopped we would boost the local industry by billions.

If we choose Australian over imported and home brands the supermarkets won't stock them any more and our favourite brands will return and we will create new jobs and new investment.

Its pretty simple really.

Volunt ar y system inef fec t ive in curbing junk food ads : g lobal rev iew

When Australian researchers examined the impact of self-regulation in a 2011 study, they found it didn’t reduce fast food advertising to children. A review in scientific journal, Obesity Reviews, examined children's exposure to advertisements for food and drinks high in sugar and fat showed little change in the last five years.

The Obesity Review's report mirrors findings from a study conducted by the University of Sydney and the Cancer Council last year, which found that the number of junk food ads aimed at children hasn't slowed, despite the Australian Food and Grocery Council introducing the Responsible Marketing to Children Initiative.

Fast food companies “force feeding” adver t ising to chi ldren : Choice

Despite creating voluntary codes to restrict the television advertisements of unhealthy foods to children, consumer group Choice has found that fast food companies aren’t applying the same restrictions to their social media marketing and mobile phone apps.

Choice said the growing popularity of mobile phones has caused fast food brands to develop a range of sophisticated strategies aimed at promoting their “unhealthy offerings” to children. The problem is not limited to mobile phone applications and social media, Choice said, with food companies also using community-based sponsorships to promote junk foods to children.

McDonald’s sponsors children’s sports such as Little Athletics, Hoop Time basketball and Swimming Queensland. KFC and Milo are sponsors of Cricket Australia, and Coca-Cola sponsors Bicycle Network Victoria, which has a program for teens.

Orange Power - the greener c leaner

The nature of cleaning products is that they are required to have some form of chemical efficacy which will have an impact upon the environment and humans.

While reviewing the Orange Power products for endorsement, ingredients were assessed for their impacts on the environment in terms of biodegradability, ecotoxicity and bioaccumulation.

Due to the choice of quality, natural ingredients and low probability of human health or environmental impact, Planet Ark has endorsed the majority of Orange Power cleaning products.

We have also taken the view that this product range, based on its market positioning, is targeting ‘green’ consumers who also seek value for money.

Planet Ark currently endorses the following Orange Power products:

• Multipurpose Cleaner

• Pre-wash Stain Remover

• Shower Bath and Tile Cleaner

• Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner

• 4 x Concentrate Laundry Liquid - Sensitive Skin

• 3 x Laundry Powder

• 3 x Laundry Liquid

• Air Fresheners

• Sticky Spot and Goo Remover

• Furniture Polish and Restorer

• Spray and Mop Floor Cleaner

You can learn more about Orange Power products here: http://www.orangepower.com.au

aware Laundr y Powder s

Aware Eco Choice and Aware Sensitive Aware laundry powders are formulated to have minimal environmental impact.

The surfactants in Aware are readily biodegradable and break down rapidly into harmless substances. Aware has no phosphates added. Phosphorus chemicals in conventional detergents feed blue-green algae and lead to algal blooms. This contributes to the build up of weeds and algal slime in our waterways. These choke other precious aquatic life forms by using up the available oxygen.

Aware laundry powders are made with plant oil based surfactants instead of petroleum oil derived surfactants. Petrochemicals are slow to biodegrade and can cause allergic reactions. These plant based detergents break down quickly into harmless substances and are made from a renewable resource.

Aware laundry powder has been tested and produces ‘garden safe’ greywater. The average household creates between 200 and 800 litres of greywater from washing clothes every week.

planet Ark endorses Aware laundry powder for the following environmental benefits:

• Biodegradability – the entire ingredients of Aware have been tested for biodegradability and reach AS4351 Part 2

• No petroleum based ingredients

• Less global warming impact – due to the highly concentrated powder. This means less transport of product and lower contribution to carbon emissions

• Suitability for grey water use. Tested by Sydney Environmental & Soil Laboratory

• Packaging is recyclable and uses 85% recycled board

• No phosphates

Aware are also the first Palm Oil Free laundry products available in major supermarkets.

For every laundry product sold between Ist October 2010 and 31st March 2011, an additional 10c goes to Planet Ark to assist projects protecting orangutans. See Planet Ark’s Palm Oil Free campaign for more information.

BUY AUSTRALIAN BRANDS!REcLAIM ThE AISLES!

As Australian consumers we can use consumer spending power to pro-actively Buy Australian Brands and reject imports and generics. If we all do this it will tell the major chains, that are crushing our local food industry, that we have had enough!

If every shopper bought one extra Australian branded product each time they shopped it would change the retail landscape.

Don’t wait for the politicians to act or it will be too late.Australian manufacturing is dying and we need a strong food industry to sustain jobs and agriculture into the future.

Even Australian made generic brands erode product innovation and profits while the chains are lining their pockets by slashing consumer choice.

To top it off the cost of the supermarket price wars is being paid for by the manufactures not the supermarkets!

We will continue to see this erosion of choice unless we take a stand.

If we replace generics and imported products in our shopping baskets with Australian Brands consumers will return the market power to our farmers and manufacturers.

Strong Australian brands will divert billions into the local economy and provide jobs for the future and insulated them against international takeovers.

Australia is currently losing one manufacturing job every 20 minutes.

That’s 150,000 jobs in the past five years. But if we all bought one more

Australian branded product each time we shopped,

local industry would grow by $1 billion a year.
