Research is an exciting journey of discovery, where you’ll be working at the ever-shifting boundary between the known and the unknown.
Where to startIdentify who will be your supervisor – before you start your application for a research degree, think of a research topic then contact a Graduate Research Co-ordinator listed for the degree you are interested in, to discuss supervision, eligibility, resources and a research proposal.
Prepare a research proposal – it is often useful to prepare a brief outline (maximum 250 words) of your proposed area of study to discuss with a prospective supervisor.
Discuss the resources available to you – find out what resources are available to you as a postgraduate research student, e.g. access to an office, computer, phone, email,
printing and stationery, as these vary depending on the faculty in which you enrol. It is very important that you make this a topic of discussion at the application phase, so that you can begin with a realistic expectation of the facilities and resources available.
Be informedSpend some time looking through the University’s research website. There is a lot of useful information for prospective research students there: www.postgraduate.uwa.edu.au/students/journey
You should also consult UWA’s research publications and expertise database for information on appropriate supervisors at UWA: www.directory.uwa.edu.au/research
Admission criteriaYou would usually be expected to have a first class or upper second class honours degree from an approved
university to enter a postgraduate research program. For further details please visit www.studyat.uwa.edu.au/postgraduate/admission
English requirementsIELTS overall minimum score of 6.5, no band less than 6.0 (must include Academic Reading and Writing modules). Please note higher English scores are required by some faculties. For further details please visit www.studyat.uwa.edu.au/postgraduate/admission/english-competency

UWA understands how important it is for Australia Awards students to find good quality accommodation close to the campus. There are many accommodation options open to Australia Awards students, designed to suit different needs.
Finding a home away from home
UWA residential collegesThe five UWA residential colleges—Currie Hall, St Catherine’s College, St George’s College, St Thomas More College and Trinity—offer a vibrant combination of living and learning on-campus, which so uniquely defines your time at UWA and adds a valuable dimension to your degree.
Situated adjacent to the main UWA Crawley campus, each college has its own style and feel, but all focus on providing a safe and secure environment and convenient living.
The colleges have comfortable, private, fully furnished bedrooms, along with common rooms, study areas, libraries, resource/computer rooms and various social and recreational spaces. Each college is fully catered, offering students three prepared meals, seven days a week. A range of dietary needs, cuisines and tastes are catered for including vegetarian meals and other special requirements.
Crawley VillageCrawley Village is the collective group of properties close by to the campus which are owned and operated by UWA. These properties provide a secure and comfortable environment, where students can excel in their studies at UWA.
Properties are offered to applicants on a priority criteria based on the type of study being undertaken. For more information please visit crawleyvillage.housing.uwa.edu.au
Living off CampusRenting an apartment, unit or house may be on your own or sharing with others. You take responsibility for the property and sign a rental contract. The approximate cost of renting a room in a house near the University is AUD$280 (one bedroom) to AUD$700 per week (three bedrooms), but this depends on the size, location and quality. Other costs such as electricity and/or gas, telephone and food are usually not included and are shared with housemates. Accommodation close to the University is in high demand and good accommodation can be found all over Perth for less.
The University’s Housing Office has an online housing database for UWA students. International students who have been offered a place at UWA but have not yet enrolled can still create an account and access the database. To find out how to create an account, visit www.housing.uwa.edu.au/housing-database. This searchable database includes lists of people looking to share a property or who have a vacant property to rent.
Temporary accommodationFor your arrival, suitable temporary accommodation will be arranged close to the university campus.

Australia’s fourth largest city, Perth is known for its clear blue skies, sunny climate and clean white beaches. It is the perfect environment for a relaxed and healthy lifestyle, yet it is also a sophisticated and modern multicultural city.
Perth is a gateway between east and west, and shares the same time zone with 60 per cent of the world’s population. It has a high standard of living and the Economist Intelligence Unit has voted it one of the top 10 cities in the world in which to live.
The city centre offers excellent shopping, as well as a vast range of restaurants, nightlife, entertainment and cultural venues. Enjoy a break from studying and visit the historic Fremantle area and join a tour of the old sites. Travel on Perth’s excellent public transport system is subsidised for international students. Head east to the Swan Valley and see how some of Western Australia’s most popular wines are made, or if cheese and chocolate are more to your taste, we have that too.
