freelance design project | 6909 chambers drive | oakland, ca 94611
this is the current project/residency of small scale real estate developer, tae sik son. this was previously the home of a retired architect and recently purchased by tae and his wife (existing photos shown below). these renders were presented to bankers in a presentation for a contracting loan [which tae was success-ful in obtaining]. the house is currently undergoing construction and will be completed and on the market in 2-3 years.

the climate of mt. angel, oregon is characterized by moderate temperatures, and a high percentage of cloud cover (overcast sky), with 61% of days in the year cloudy. ue to the cold and rainy climate of this region, the main daylighting strategies of this site are to maximize the amount of desirable, diffused natural light in the gallery space where necessary, while simultaneously limiting it in more light-sensitive exhibit areas.
the design of the gallery is largely driven by the climate’s overcast sky. the angled facets of the roof and walls are designed to reflect the unwanted direct sun-light to first hit one of these surfaces before entering into the gallery. the effect achieved by the central skylight bending the sunlight and reflecting it upon the interior ceiling as it pours into the gallery, is a soft even illumination of the central gathering space. it offers a sense of weather and time of day without having to actually be outdoors, and naturally draws people to the center of the gallery.

case study: sky courts by höweler + yoon architecture | chengdu, china
the case study is an in-depth analysis of a recently constructed architectural project. design principles ranging from contextual relationship, to climate responsive perfor-mance, to building structure were carefully researched. an analytical diagram reflect-ing the discovered design decisions, as well as a corresponding sectional model were developed. this project was meant as an inspirational building block for subse-quent projects in the studio course. one of the sky courts’s generative design concepts is a use of a geometric shape, the hyper-bolic paraboloid, in the building’s sloped roof system. this shape heavily influenced the latter two projects of this studio.

the conceptual cut | san francisco, ca
the conceptual cut is the design of a stratiegic building corner, influenced by the precedent study (p. 17-19). this corner serves as a representative cut, revealing essential characteristics, systems, conditions, and qualites of a building. the hypothetical building was to be set in an unspecified [flat] site within san francisco, and the design, orientation, performative features were to coorespond accordingly.

good food project | soma, san francisco
good food is an aggregation of various programs centered on the awareness and education of food. it challenges the rela-tively recent trajectory of mass food production, and promotes the advancement of food research, urban farming, and the consumption of local and/or organic nutritional options. the working elements included in this project do indeed exist in the bay area, but not under one collective entity. the design draws inspiration from a case study: the sky courts in chengdu, china (researched on page 17-19).

boom town | emeryville, ca
the boom town is a proposal of large-scale contemporary housing in emeryville, ca. the site (hatched in the site analysis on the left of this page) symbolizes a crucial bridging mo-ment of recently urbanized areas of the city. this analysis of emeryville is critical of how the city lacks a centralized, uniform civic space in terms of building type, program, and scale. this project intends on utilizing a contemporary housing complex in resolving the analysis via implementation of a large-scale, outdoor ampitheater.

potrero hill library | potrero hill, san francisco
this project was a final evolution of the double negative (p.30) into a contemporary library. anal-ysis of the site included a pixelization and extru-tion of potrero hill’s topography. this abstraction was combined with of the aggregation of units of the double negative. the merged concepts gen-erated interior and social spaces, vertical circula-tion and sequence, form and envelope, as well as program and its grouping within the library.
