DESCRIPTIONAs the second-most common cancer in both men and women, lung cancer is responsible for the majority of cancer-related deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates more than 160,000 people will lose their battle with lung cancer this year, accounting for more victims than breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancers combined. In recognition of National Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, Austin CyberKnife encourages local residents to take preventive steps to protect themselves and their loved ones from common and lesser-known causes of lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Treatment OptionsSurgery: Some patients have small tumors that can beremoved surgically, but they may suffer from othermedical problems that prevent them from being surgicalcandidates or they may be opposed to surgery. In thesecases, important treatment options like CyberKnife offeran alternative.External-Beam Radiation Therapy: For patients whocannot tolerate surgery, external-beam radiationtherapy (EBRT) is an option, although this treatment canbe lengthy and difficult for some patients to endure.EBRT delivers focused radiation to a tumor but alsoencompasses a large margin of normal tissue.Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy: Stereotacticradiosurgery systems like the CyberKnife can offereffective treatment of lung tumors while carrying a lowrisk of side effects. Treatment is noninvasive, spareshealthy tissue and typically involves three to fiveoutpatient procedures.1400 North IH 35 Austin, TX 78701(512) 324-8060 www.austincyberknife.com 6. One of a Kind: Lung Optimization Treatment Austin CyberKnife is one of the first centers in the world to install the Lung Optimization Treatment (LOT) system, which expands the centers ability to treat lung tumors in certain types of patients. The LOT System allows patients with conditions like emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to undergo CyberKnife treatment without the use of fiducials. Previously, these types of patients may not have been appropriate candidates. Austin CyberKnifes latest technology featuring LOT reduces the need for placing fiducials in higher risk lung tumor patients. Instead, the technology uses cameras and medical imaging to determine the tumor location in real time and ensure the CyberKnife remains locked on target.1400 North IH 35 Austin, TX 78701 (512) 324-8060 www.austincyberknife.com 7.
