Hello again Austin - San Antonio Chapter members and non-members.
It looks like we sur-vived another Texas summer and even had some decent rain re-cently. This time of year brings thoughts of the holidays and this year I’m going to give you a chance to provide suggestions for our end of the year bash both locale and charity contribu-tion. Please give this some thought and send me your
thoughts by the end of this month.
We are meeting in San Antonio this month, thanks to HTS Texas for providing lunch and Chris Rich-ardson for providing the presentation on Variable Refrigeration Flow systems. Please

Variable Refrigerant Flow Heating/Cooling Systems
Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) is an HVAC technology invented in Japan by Daikin company in 1982. Like ductless mini-split systems, VRFs use refrigerant as the cooling and heating medium. This refrigerant is conditioned by a single out-door condensing unit, and is circulated within the building to multiple fan-coil units (FCUs). Due to variable speed com-pressors and the ability to match building load VRF is a very efficient HVAC technology.

“Configurations vary among the types of air-conditioning systems available, but one key ratio remains the same: always one condensing unit to one evaporator. For DX systems, this means that once a condensing unit is connected to an evaporator inside the building, providing cool air to several spaces requires either ductwork or additional condensing units and evaporators.
Not so with VRF systems, in which one condensing unit can be connected to multiple evaporators, each individually controllable by its user. Similar to the more conventional ductless multi-split systems, which can also connect one out-door section to several evaporators, VRF systems are different in one important respect - although multi-split systems, like DX systems, turn on and off depending on whether the room to be cooled is too warm or not warm enough, VRF systems constantly modulate the amount of refrigerant being sent to each evaporator. By operating at varying speeds, VRF units work only at the needed rate, which is how they consume less energy than on/off systems, even if they run more frequently”...New and Cool: Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems , AIArchitect April 10, 2009

Chris Richardson has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the State University of New York at Binghamton. During his 14 years in the HVAC industry he has worked as a con-sulting engineer, construction cost estimator, project man-ager and Product manager. His most recent stops have included a 5 year stint as the Product Engineering Manag-er for Daikin AC (Americas) and 3 years as a VRF specialist for Direct Expansion solutions.

Continue on IH 410 for approx. 4.0 Mi to Exit 21, merge right onto US 281 N to-wards Johnson City
Continue on US 281 N towards Johnson City and Exit at Nakoma Drive
Continue on Frontage Road merge to San Pedro Avenue for approx. 1.5 Mi.
Turn left at E. Nakoma Drive/US 281 overpass.
Continue on for approximately .6 Mi, HTS Texas will be on your right.

Last month, the Austin / San Antonio Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers sponsored the five day Certified Energy Manager training and exam. Thank you to Austin Energy for hosting the training as well as a big Thank You to chapter board member Karma Nilsson for handling the registrations and coordi-nation with AEE national and Linda Rickard for handling Austin logistics to make this event a success. Our Board of Directors wishes all participants the best of luck in obtaining their CEM certification!

There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all things mechanical. After servicing his company loyally for more than 30 years, he happily retired. Several years later, the company contacted him regarding a seemingly impossible problem they were having with one of their multimillion-dollar machines.
They had tried everything and everyone else to get the machine to work but to no avail. In desperation, they called on the retired engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past. The engineer responded to their plea, “Oh???” and reluctantly took the challenge. He spent a day studying the huge machine. At the end of the day, he marked a small “x” in chalk on a particular component of the machine and stated, “This is where your problem is.”
The part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again. The company received a bill for$50,000 from the engineer for his service. They demanded an itemized accounting of his charges.
The engineer replied: “One chalk mark: $1; knowing where to put it: $49,999.”
It was paid in full and the engineer retired again in peace.
