Good News...Happy Summer everyone! It sure felt like it would never come, but now that it is here let’s make the most of it! We have got some exciting things going on this summer for our Aurora Sewing Center family.

One of my favorites is a pet project of mine, the new Kids Kamp Clubhouse. We all know how important it is to nurture the next generation of sewers and we have worked really hard to develop a set of Kids Kamp classes that will inspire and encourage our budding sewists! In this new program we have bundled our two Kids Kamp classes (Kids Kamp 1 & 2) into a value pack that includes 27 hours of education, all kits and supplies, PLUS an amazing Baby Lock Amelia sewing machine. Normally this is a $1000 value but now we have it all for only $500! Once they have completed Kids Kamp 1 and 2 your child will be on their way to becoming a confident sewer with skills that will be with them for life! We are excited to welcome boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 12 for this program. Don’t wait to sign up because classes fill up fast and we cap our Kids Kamp classes at 8 students per class so they get the personal attention they need. See page 7 of this booklet for more information!

The news just keeps coming because we have made it even easier to our beginning sewers to build their skills. We have tweaked our class schedules so you can take consecutive classes as you work on developing your quilting abilities. For example, we have made sure that our Cutting Workshop is followed on the calendar by Perfect Piecing then Binding Basics so that you can build on your new skills in order! We think it will ensure that you can become a proficient quilter by the end of the summer if that is your desire!

Of course, as always Diane has filled the calendar with some great classes and one of my favorites is Kaye England’s Graceful Garden block of the month. This six-month class will teach you new techniques while making a stunning sampler quilt. Just wait until you see how different this quilt can look with different color-ways. You will love it!

Our teaching staff is a mix of old and new faces. By now you are becoming familiar with Pam who has a great set of classes scheduled this summer. We have also added some new faces. This semester you can meet Marija who will be teaching a beautiful quilt called Woven Whispers which is a stunner (pg. 1) as well as a beautiful table runner Migrations that will teach you how to free-hand cut and sew curves as well as make 3D flying geese! You may have met Sheila while she was working in the store, but now you’ll get to know her as a teacher when you join her for Monster Madness (pg. 18) which will be a great class for practicing your free motion skills as well as basic applique! Kathy Sweet will also be making her teaching debut with Sew Kind of Wonderful’s Metro Waves (pg. 3) and Heartstrings (also page 3). Finally, since so many of you have been asking for a class on BERNINA presser feet, Karie will be doing a monthly demo called Feetures! where she will be highlighting a few different BERNINA feet each month.

We know that your time is precious in the summer and we so appreciate you spending some of it with us. We owe everything we are to our amazing customers and thank you for your continued love and support!

“Help! There is something wrong with my machine!”...is something I hear everyday. We train our staff to troubleshoot when you bring your machine to us with a problem. So before checking in the machine for repair, we will always take the time to ask questions so we make sure that the problem

is not a simple fix. Often we will find that the problem lies with the thread, needles or incorrect bobbin! Just the other day I had a customer who was frustrated almost to the point of tears because her machine was “broken”. She was sure that the machine was defective and that it needed to be sent back to the manufacturer. Once we had her bring the machine in and I sat with her we realized that her issue was in the quality of thread she was using.

It is so tempting to buy discount thread to save a little money, but the savings on the front end will leave you paying on the back end every time! My customer’s problem thread was advertised, as “embroidery thread” so she was sure that it was fine to use for her project. Next time you are tempted to use a new bargain thread, try this experiment. Simply take your thread, hold one end in each hand and pull! If your thread stretches a lot or breaks easily you may have a problem. Thread that stretches out while sewing or embroidering can cause major problems for your machine and headaches for you!

In the same vein, when embroidering, be sure to use the bobbin thread recommended for your machine. We see customers come in with thread they purchased at the big box stores because it is marked as bobbin thread but is totally incorrect for their machine and it causes tension problems, skipped stitches and poor embroidery quality. All machines are finely calibrated for certain threads so to ensure the best performance from your machine, always use what the manufacturer of the machine suggests!

It is so important to buy the best quality thread you can afford. At Aurora Sewing Center, we offer a wide range of thread options including Mettler, Aurifil, Floriani and Isacord. We have to opportunity to carry any thread brands we wish and we sell the brands that we know will not cause your machines to misbehave and hope that these brands have become your favorites as well as ours.

Don’t forget to bring your machine it for its yearly turn-up and remember…Never sew with a mushy bobbin!
