ANNUAL REPORT - 2010
Dear Members Your committee is pleased to report on the activities of your Association for the financial year ended 31 December 2010. OVERVIEW AND FUTURE DIRECTION The purpose of your Association is to promote the sport of ultra-running; that is, events longer than a standard marathon. In this regard, your committee is desirous of attracting more runners to ultra events, improving the quality of performances, and ensuring that athletes remember the event as a satisfying experience. Your committee is pleased to report that the number of participants in ultra marathons in Australia has continued to increase. The numbers contesting our various races are at record levels, the numbers of races are at record levels and new race records are being set in almost every event on the calendar. It is also important to ensure that we compete on the international stage at a reasonable level. The fact that we have continued to improve our position at world championships these past 3 – 4 years is no accident. The athletes selected to represent your country and AURA have competed with distinction. Detailed results appear elsewhere in this report. The second Commonwealth championships will be held in Wales in September 2011. The events will comprise a 24 hour race and a trail race of 55km. There is a reasonable chance that these two events will be included in future Commonwealth Games and ultimately in the Olympics. We have come a long way in the past few years and it is a great tribute to our athletes, our members, our various race organisers and their volunteers, and our administration. RACE CALENDAR Sanctioning requirements for inclusion of races in our race calendar are provided online. We make concerted efforts to ensure that sanctioned races are conducted to a reasonable standard and we actively promote those races that are included our calendar. In particular we are proud of our partnership with several major events: Six Foot Track marathon, Canberra marathon and 50k, Wild Endurance 100, The North Face 100 and the Kokoda Challenge. We also acknowledge the depth of commitment of the race directors to over 30 other races on our calendar and thank those race directors and their volunteers who so unselfishly give up their time to organise and conduct these races. It is not an easy task. In particular, we congratulate and thank the following race directors for the new races added to our race calendar for the 2010 year and thank the race directors concerned for taking on this responsibility.

Following the unfortunate cancellation of the 2011 24 Hour WC set for Brugg, Switzerland in June, the IAU sought an alternate venue. Their quest was unsuccessful and there will be no world 24 hr championships for 2011. The 2012 24 Hour WC has already been set for Poland in September. IAU 100km World Championships Australia fielded a team at the IAU 100km World Championships held at Gibraltar on 7 November 2010. Men

AWARDS AND PRIZES
Female Ultra Athlete of the Year…..Sharon Scholz (Vic)
Sharon had a stellar year. She won the Mansfield to Buller (ladies section) in January, then the Coburg 6hr in March with just under 72km. She followed this up with a 6th in the World 24hr championships in Brive-la-Gaillarde in May with 224.885km. She spearheaded our ladies team, who finished on the podium (3rd) for the first ever podium finish by an Australian team at a World championship. Sharon's performances resulted in new 6hr, 12hr and 24hr Australian road records. At the end of July, Sharon travelled to Caboolture where she won the Australian 48 hour championship outright with 333.026km, breaking Helen Stanger's long-standing1995 record of 329.256km. Sharon then raced at Moe where she finished 2nd (1st Australian citizen) in the 6 hour women's section with just under 66km. She followed this up with an outstanding performance in winning the ladies section of the Coast to Kosciuszko in a new race record time of 32:14:32.
Male Ultra Athlete of the Year…..Jo Blake (NSW)
Jo captained the Australian team to contest the IAU 24 hr world championships in Brive-la-Galliarde, France in May. He finished in 17th position in the men's section and was top Australian with a solid 245.300km on a difficult course. He then contested the 246km Spartathlon in Greece in September, finishing 29th despite a torn lateral quad. He finished the year with a win in the 242km Coast to Kosciuszko.

Rising star award….Chris Hills
The Rising Star award is awarded to the ultra runner of 25 years and under
(male or female) with the most impressive performances for the year. That
person was Chris Hills (DOB 15-08-1985) who won the Gold Coast 50km in
June 2010 in a time of 3:12:45.
Bryan Smith Award…..Martin Fryer
The Bryan Smith award is awarded to the ultra
athlete with the best 24 hour performance for the
year. That person was Martin Fryer, with
259.481km achieved at Soochow University,
Taipei in December 2010.
Cliff Young Gumboot award…..Roger Guard
The Cliff Young award is made to the athlete of 60 years and over with the
best 24 hour performance for the year. That person was Roger Guard with
180.566km achieved at Caboolture in July 2010.
AURA aggregate points competition…..Sharon Scholz
This competition is based on a complex formula with points being awarded for wins and placings, bonuses where the races are AURA championships, bonuses for world class performances and Australian & world records and points per km for distances run. The winner for 2010 was Sharon Scholz with 111 points, followed by Mal Gamble with 100 points, Kerrie Bremner (62 points) and Susannah Harvey-Jamieson (58 points). For more information, see http://www.aura.asn.au/points_comp.html OPERATIONS Records. David Billett has the unenviable and painstaking task of seeking out race results from race directors, sifting through the results to determine who are AURA members, allocating the appropriate number of points, checking for records, scrutinising lapsheets, etc. Thanks to David for a job well done. Full details of records awarded and points gained appear in each issue of Ultramag and on our website.
100, 200 & 250 Club. These awards are made to those who have achieved 100 mile, 200 km and 250 km in 24 hours track. To qualify it is essential that the feat be achieved on a standard athletic track or, if on a road course, then one that has been properly measured to AURA standards. It also needs to be performed in a race (not a solo run) and verified by the race director. Those who achieve this feat will be included in the 100, 200 or 250 Club listing which will appear from time to time in AURA’s official publication, Ultramag and on the website. A commemorative polo shirt is available for purchase. Runners who have achieved this feat in the past will be automatically recognised. Ultramag. We thought that Kevin Cassidy's 8 year stint as Ultramag editor would be a hard act to follow, but Julia Thorn has picked up the reins very well and is quickly stamping her mark as new editor. The magazine, produced quarterly, contains details of forthcoming races, race results, race reports, various stories, pictures and details of records. The publication has been upgraded to include more pics and a colour cover. There will be some advertising content, the purpose of which is to defray costs of publication. The magazine is far more attractive with the colour content. Thanks to Julia for a job well

Principal Activities The principal activities of the association during the financial year were to encourage the development of and participation in ultra running within Australia and to support national teams representing Australia at IAU World Championships and other international events. Significant Changes No significant change in the nature of these activities occurred during the year. Operating Result The profit after providing for income tax amounted to $6,815 (2009, $7,845)
FINANCIAL & LEGAL Results and Position The accompanying statements of account reveal a surplus of income over expenditure of $6,815 (2009, $7,845). AURA receives no financial support from Athletics Australia, the Australian Sports Commission or any other government funding. Stock of clothing at year end is not brought to account.
Travel costs for sending teams overseas amounted to $5,700 (2009, $6,050). Your committee is very proud of the fact that we have been able to make a meaningful contribution to the cost of sending representative teams overseas. We trust that they will regard this as some small measure of our gratitude for the enormous amount of work they do in preparing for these arduous events at the very top level.
Net assets at year end amounted to $23,666 compared with $16,851 at the end of the previous year. Overall, your Association’s financial position, when considered in conjunction with planned initiatives, is considered to be quite sound. Memberships Memberships at year end remained steady. It is hoped that with more publicity for events that event numbers will continue to increase, as well as the number of AURA members. Members are asked to
