Letter to Our Readers August is peak vacation time, time to relax, enjoy the family and visit the many beaches spread up and down the “Jersey Shore”. Enjoy your daily visits to the beaches of your choice, then on your return home, instead of cooking after your “relaxing” day at the beach, stop at one of the many local restaurants participating in Venues NJ’s Beach & Dine program, have a bite and save some money! (Look for the Beach & Dine Participant logo in this issue’s ads). In this issue’s main editorial feature, our writers have again provided you with helpful hints for planning your daily beach visits. They have also listed many restaurants participating in our Summer 2015 Beach & Dine program where you can grab a bite and save on your meal by simply presenting your daily beach badge or parking stub. And, after a day in the sun, where can go to feel as though you’re dining outdoors on a lovely stone patio, complete with an awning and trees, while enjoying the comfort of an air-conditioned venue. Our writers might suggest the Game Time Bar & Grill, located within iPlay America in Freehold Township, where you can find all this, along with great food, cool libations, live entertainment. Read more in this issue’s Restaurant Profile feature. It’s not always easy to keep large and diverse crowds entertained, but with one of the largest playlists around and a wealth of experience, The Ruckus are quickly making a name for themselves as a band that can play any genre. Check out this month’s Band Profile. She’s a bartender, real estate broker, volunteer, all while maintaining a regular workout schedule. This is Maria Grazia “Mary Grace” Scifo, a veteran bartender currently pouring libations at tre, a newly opened restaurant in Freehold. Read more about “Mary Grace” in this issue’s Mixologist-of-the-Month feature. Then, if you’re in the area, stop in and let her mix you a refreshing drink. Originally from Paterson, NJ, she became a probations officer in Newark and is now a standup comic with homes in Manhattan, NYC and Beverly Hills, CA. Our contributing writer Steve O would like you to meet Sunda Croonquist, this month’s Comic Relief personality. Ok, we’ve set the landscape. Now get out there and enjoy the rest of the summer.

Would you like to feel as though you’re dining outdoors on a lovely stone patio, complete with an awning and trees and enjoying the comfort of an air-conditioned venue? You can find this, along with great food, cool libations, live entertainment, even a luscious Brunch served Saturdays & Sundays, and so much more, at Game Time Bar and Grill, located within iPlay America in Freehold Township. According to Dan Rappa, Food and Beverage Director, Game Time offers high quality food expertly crafted by Chef Joe Raiola, who holds the title of the Food Network’s “Chopped Champion Season 5.” Although iPlay America, the indoor amusement theme park is always free to enter, patrons can choose to

dine at Game Time Bar and Grill exclusively or stay and enjoy the fun inside the theme park. Rappa describes the delicious fare as “an elevated, modern take on bar food.” The restaurant is open for lunch, dinner, late night snacks and appetizers, and a hearty Weekend Brunch. Game Time also offers tremendous sports viewing, perfect for favorite team “game times” with a cocktail or beer and appetizer. And, UFC fans are welcome to enjoy the live UFC broadcasts shown throughout the year. Game Time Bar and Grill offers its patrons viewing on 20+ flat screen TVs and three large projectors. Enjoy your meals or drinks in either the tavern-style bar area with its wooden floor and warm décor, high-top tables and live entertainment on Saturday nights, or in the dining room where patrons may dine on tables and chairs in the colorful “outdoor café,” with its stone patio flooring, describes Jackie Romano, Restaurant Manager. And, if you’re looking for a venue that offers live music in the early evening as opposed to the usual 10:00 pm music start time in many local bars and eateries, look no further.

Entertainment begins here at 8:00 pm with music from New Jersey cover bands who perform a range of styles, including rock, oldies, and country, among other genres. There is music to please every musical palate. Take in Happy Hour Monday thru Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, when $3 Bud Lights, $4 Sangrias and House Wines and $5 House Cocktails are on tap. Choose from a new $5 Bites Menu that includes Fried Ravioli, Twin Cheese Burger Sliders, Bar Pie, Wings (six-pieces) Calamari, Nachos Pequenos, and Game Time Bar and Grill Homemade Potato Chips. The restaurant offers tempting appetizers, including Pulled Pork Sliders with pickled jalapeno and sweet slaw, or

Game Time Jumbo Wings with homemade Buffalo or BBQ sauce. Pair up your menu selection with one of Game Time Bar and Grill’s craft beers. There are also numerous menu selections including Hand-Tossed New York-Style Pizza with various toppings and the Jersey Burger, an Angus burger with Black Forest Ham, fried egg and American cheese on a pretzel roll. The entrée menu includes the popular Coffee and Brown Sugar Rub Baby Back Ribs, with Applewood maple BBQ sauce, cold slaw and fries or the rich Macaroni and Cheese with Andouille sausage, Granny Smith apples and panko. The restaurant is family-friendly as well,

with a Kids Menu which includes Hot Dogs, Mac and Cheese, Grilled Cheese, Pizza and Sliders. Weekly specials include “Brew & Cue” on Mondays -- two free games of pool with the purchase of a Beer Tower and one free game of pool with the purchase of a Beer Flight; Tuesdays bring two-for-one bar pies; Wednesday nights are poker night with $3 Miller Lite Drafts; and football night on Thursdays.

Patrons can enjoy $3 Bud Light Drafts and $3.50 Bud Light bottles and a $5 Bites Menu during all NFL games. Friday night at Game Time is “After Dark” with Late Night Happy Hour from 10:00 pm to midnight. Visit Game Time Bar and Grill on Saturday night and be treated to live entertainment -- and $3 Bud Light Drafts (promotions are subject to change without notice). A special treat is the Saturday & Sunday Brunch from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Start with a Fresh Berry Parfait, with seasonal fresh berries, vanilla yogurt and fresh granola; or Black Bean Hummus and Chili Dusted Tortilla chips. Little

diners can choose Chocolate Chip Waffles, Scrambled Eggs and Bacon or Mini Chicken and Waffles. Menu selections are plentiful and include Chicken and Waffles, Southern-fried boneless chicken, waffles and maple country gravy; Crab and Avocado Omelet, Game Time Steak and Eggs, a 12 ounce N.Y. strip steak with two eggs, and Game Time potatoes. A variety of Titos Bloody Marys are on hand for $6, including a BLT Bloody Mary, with celery, applewood

smoked bacon, fresh lime. Or try the $4 Mimosas. So, take the kids for a family dinner, meet up with friends for a drink, or enjoy all the sports you can handle at Game Time Bar and Grill, with its upbeat atmosphere, high quality food and great entertainment!

It’s not always easy to keep large and diverse crowds entertained, but with one of the largest playlists around and a wealth of experience, The Ruckus are quickly making a name for themselves as a band that can play any genre. The Ruckus has only been playing shows together for a year, though the connections within the band are a lot older. They are made up of Dave Stefanic on vocals, Ralph Mercuro on guitar, Paul Velez on bass and Roman Dino on drums. Stefanic and Mercuro had been in a band together prior to forming the Ruckus and when his long-time friend Dino became available they decided to play together just for fun. When Mercuro’s cousin Velez entered the mix they knew they had something special and decided to form The Ruckus. The Ruckus doesn’t just try to make a connection with the crowd when they’re on stage. During breaks they’ll make rounds throughout the crowd to make sure everyone is enjoying the show and if they find out there’s a celebration going on, that is celebrated on stage too, making the whole show a big party. “A lot of bands will talk about their fans, but we talk about our friends,” Stefanic asserts. They also connect with everyone by playing a wide array of music, adding hip-hop and dance to the popular top-40 tracks and classic cover band staples. By including nearly every genre, it guarantees if one patron doesn’t like a particular song or style, one he or she does enjoy is coming up quickly. Dino owns the sampler that made it possible

to add another dimension to their repertoire, adding horns and keyboard to the background whenever it is called for. “It’s almost like having a fifth band member in a way,” describes Velez. By using the sampler and adding a wider variety on genres than most, The Ruckus can play for the whole crowd. Even if they are taken out of their comfort zone as musicians, if it’s what the crowd wants to hear, they’ll play it. Being as new as they are, The Ruckus is still working on getting into more venues, though they have already become regulars at a few places. They consider Woody’s Roadside Tavern in Farmingdale to be their home base, but they also play the Boardwalk Bar & Grill in Point Pleasant, Ryan’s Pub in Monroe Township and

The Roost in Cream Ridge. Mercuro has been the one hitting the pavement after work looking for bookings and when he finds an opening they do not disappoint. “Every place that we’ve been to by the end of the night they’re opening up the book and saying how about again next month,” says Mercuro.

His work and the band’s performances have paid off, as they are booked

through the rest of the year with one to two shows every week. There’s not too many nights you can go out and hear Eminem, Luke Bryan and Van Halen all in the same set. It helps that everyone in the band likes different music, but appreciates all of it and the year of rehearsing together before playing their first show didn’t hurt at all either. Their playlist is so extensive, they can play 50 songs four nights in a row and never perform the same one twice. There is, however, one song in particular they noticed always get the whole crowd involved and singing. “The most satisfying song we play especially when the room is full is ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ by Simple Minds,” said Mercuro. “The whole room sings along with us that particular song seems to get it and I don’t know how many other bands play that song, but that seems to be the one where everyone is involved.” They also know they have a responsibility to the venue that fits in between an entertained audience and their success. Amused guests means good business for the bar, which means another trip back. “You can be the best band in the world, but if people aren’t filling that register up the venue is not going to invite you back,” says Velez. “We try to make sure that everybody is involved, whether it’s the band, the establishment or the people that are coming to see us,” he adds. “Everybody’s involved and everybody’s having a good time.” Visit TheRuckusNJ.com for music samples, playlist and schedule, and give the band a like at facebook.com/theruckusnj.

Maria Grazia Scifoby CLARE MARIE CELANO

Maria Grazia “Mary Grace” Scifo works as a bartender and a real estate broker, and still finds time to do volunteer charity work with the Freehold Elks.

The veteran bartender, a resident of Old Bridge, began bartending in a catering hall 25 years ago, learning her craft on the job. She says the job gave her a great foundation for mixing drinks that appeal to those in their 20s to those in their 90s. After two years, Scifo moved to pubs and lounges to enjoy more interaction with people.

“Over the years I worked in a number of diverse venues from Heartbreakers in Neptune, the Tiki bar at the Original Oyster in the Highlands, an Irish pub

in North Jersey, to a trendy lounge in SoHo, and now ‘Tre’ in Freehold Borough, where I feel at home,” she expresses.

Scifo spent years as a real estate broker in a corporate structured company where she said she literally worked 80 hours a week.

“It afforded me a great living and interaction with people, which is what drew me to bartending as well, but I didn’t have much of a life with the real estate career,” she relates. “And, I missed my family and I missed living near the shore.”

Scifo still works as a real estate broker but says “in today’s economy tending bar is what pays my bills.”The bartender maintains regular physical workouts, something she’s done since she was in her 20s. She has also worked as a personal trainer. “I am very athletic. I started working out because I liked the way it made me look, but it hooked me because I loved the way it made me feel,” she emphasizes. “When I feel the aches and pains, I’d rather it be from working out and not from aging,” she quips.

In her spare time Scifo enjoys riding a motorcycle with her boyfriend. “We incorporate our love for riding and our sense of charity with The Freehold Elks,” she says with a smile.

The couple participates in various charity runs with the Freehold Elks, and also enjoys spending time volunteering at the Elks Camp Moore, for special needs children in Haskell, NJ.

The first entrance applause occurs before even the overture begins. Riotous clapping is occasioned when a bright point of light travels over the ceiling and the curtain of the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York where the push-button, button-pushing musical “Finding Neverland” opened. This little light, you see, is pretty much guaranteed to elicit a Pavlovian response from anyone familiar with the story of “Peter Pan” in its various incarnations Said light equals Tinker Bell, the temperamental fairy who requires your applause to stay alive. As with many a Broadway musical these days, “Finding Neverland” — which features a book by James Graham and soft-pop power ballads by Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy — is based on a popular film. That would be the 2004 biopic about the playwright J. M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, which starred Johnny Depp. The stage version of “Finding Neverland” is no replica of the film, though it might have been better if it were. Instead, it heightens the screenplay’s sentimentality, tidy psychologizing and life-affirming messages by thickening their syrup and corn quotients in ways presumably

A Review

deemed palatable to theatergoing children and their parents. It takes an id to create a Neverland. At the beginning our bearded, Scottish-born hero is a successful and fashionable playwright suffering from writer’s block and an unhappy marriage to a superficial socialite. Then one day in Kensington Gardens, he meets four enchanting little boys, the Llewelyn Davies brothers. He happily joins in their rambunctious games of pretend, which testify to the philosophy, later expressed in song, that “the world is so mysterious and wild/when you start to see it through the eyes of a child.” The spectacle of a strange man playing in the park with pink-cheeked kids usually sets off alarm bells, at least in this era of the Amber Alert. But not to worry. Mr. Morrison, in a determinedly neutral performance, has been divested of any hints of sensuality. What’s more, those boys have a mother, Sylvia, a widow with a bad cough and an inner child who immediately gravitates to Barrie, to whom she says, “I think to have faith is to have wings.” And from romping with Sylvia

and her sons, Barrie will discover that playtime can inspire a play. Thus is born the work that will guarantee his immortality, as well as theater’s most enduring portrait of arrested development. But there’s always sugar in the shadows, even in that climactic fantasy sequence when Captain Hook materializes to tell Barrie to get in touch with his dark side. “Unleash me!” he instructs Barrie. And our hero loosens up enough to tear open his shirt, center-stage, and, in the second act, to finally share a kiss with Sylvia. Barrie’s evolution is set to a score that brings to mind the songs that accompany animated adventure films and are favored by contestants on “The Voice” and “American Idol Every song — the titles include “Circus of Your Mind” and “We’re All Made of Stars” — vaguely reminds you of some recording

you have heard in the background of your life. How can you hear the wail of a penny whistle without thinking of Celine Dion bewailing the titular ship’s sinking in “Titanic”? It may well be the show’s lack of freshness accounts for its appeal. “Finding Neverland” was a sellout in Cambridge, and it’s already doing boffo box office here. When Barrie says he’s working on a new and surprising play, his producer, Frohman, responds that he doesn’t like surprises. “I said I wanted something new,” he says. “New does not necessarily mean different. Think of it like — a new penny. It looks and feels the same as an old penny, right? It’s just — shinier.” By this criterion, “Finding Neverland” might well be a Charles Frohman production.

Sunda CroonquistI recently had an entertaining two hours speaking with Sunda Croonquist. Sunda is bi, coastal that is. She and her lawyer

husband have homes in both Manhattan and Beverly Hills. Sunda has been honing her stand-up skills for a number of years now, and this after an unlikely start as a probation officer in Newark, NJ. In fact, her unlikely start goes even deeper than that. Sunda is from Paterson and is the daughter of a Swedish father and African-American mother.

Venues-NJ: Sunda, let’s start with your background. Former Miss NJ contestant, BA in criminal justice, parole officer, married to a lawyer and a mom. How did you end up doing stand-up comedy?

Sunda Croonquist: It was at a chance meeting at a party that I met Jackie Mason. I was cracking jokes about all of his fans and my wisecracks went to another level. He asked me if I was a comedian and I said “No! I’m a ‘serious’ actress!” He said, “You need to go onstage!” My husband, then boyfriend, said, “Ya know, Sunda...If Jackie Mason tells you you’re funny... maybe you are!” With their encouragement, I took a class with Stephen Rosenfield at The American Comedy Institute and then got my first paid booking one week after my

debut at “Don’t Tell Mama” in New York City. The rest is history!

V-NJ: Of all the funny stuff you’ve done and are still doing, it seems like the real life stuff is always the best. Your mother-in-law sued you?! This is great, tell us about it.

SC: I had always written jokes about her and my father-in-law. They were at my debut performance (and were in my act, then) and in fact, I even did my routine on national television when Jerry Lewis held his MDA Telethon. After she lost the lawsuit I saw her, put my arms around her (which she always hated!) and I said: “Ruthie, I know you didn’t want to do this to me.” To which she replied: “The hell I didn’t! Oh yes I did! I did not like what you wrote about me in your blog!” The funny part about the whole story that nobody knows is that I had written a private blog on Myspace and because of my inability to grasp the virtual world of the

Internet, I thought it was private and I hit the “public” button! It was awful! She wasn’t on Myspace but her best friend’s daughter saw it, printed it and mailed it to her in Brooklyn. Now I had a history of the family not being sold on the idea of my husband bringing home a girl with such a “deep tan” but they all dove in. Ruthie sued and sadly passed away. Shortly before she

died, she disinherited my husband from the will but that wouldn’t have been so bad had she not disinherited her grandchildren. I often think that after she wrote them out that she felt badly and that the stress contributed to her mysterious death. She was found dead in her apartment in Brooklyn. A sad story indeed but even sadder is the fact that the suit prompted the attack that this was a publicity

stunt. When people say, “Any publicity is good publicity,” trust me: it’s not. Ironically, I’m contacted by media outlets for mother-in-law advice!

V-NJ: And, what’s the advice?

SC: Use earplugs! Don’t listen, just get through it and if you keep your mouth shut, you might still be in the will!

V-NJ: You and Mike Marino (profiled in the June 2015 issue) just finished filming a pilot together. What’s it about and when can we see it? (At press time, no date was set for the pilot.)

SC: This hysterical premise is based on Mike Marino’s family business. I play his sister, a spoiled “guidette,” married to a Jewish guy who has a daughter who’s always in the principal’s office. She relies on Mike because her husband is non-confrontational but that’s just an excuse because she’d rather Mike handle her problems so that she can take care of her business which is basically being pampered on a daily basis. It’s a great premise for me because it mirrors part of my life as well as Mike’s. Being raised by an Italian “step-father” who owned a sausage company makes it easy for me to play the role. I know more about pasta fagioli and braciole than most Italians I know! Sunday Sauce is more my reality than Swedish Meatballs. With my maiden name, Croonquist, you’d think it would be the other way around!

This “comedy chameleon” even had time to found the LA School of Comedy and written a book (with Chef Nir Weinblut), Kosher Soul Food. For more on Sunda, just type her name into Google and you’ll find many links.

Comic Relief

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

About Special Strides: Special Strides, Inc., a non for profit 501 C (3), opened its doors in 1998. Founder Laurie Landy was able to combine her passion as an occupational therapist, her love of the natural environment and her knowledge of equine movement. Stymied by the limits of traditional classroom based therapy Laurie envisioned an environment where individuals could reach their therapy and recreational goals in a locale that supported all their needs-physical, emotional, sensory, and communication.

Since its inception, Special Strides, located in Monroe Township in Central NJ, at Congress Hill Farm, has focused on improving the quality of life for all individuals who pass through the stable gates; patients, riders, families, volunteers, staff, donors and community members.

BRANDINGThe process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product or a place in the minds of consumers.

Whether consumer, business proprietor or entrepreneur, you are affected and effected daily by the process known as “branding.” As a consumer, when you shop, you make a decision before you buy: are you looking to save money or are you looking to purchase the best known product? When you go out for an evening, are you heading “just anywhere” or to a venue with a good reputation?

As a business owner in the hospitality industry, you make decisions every day based on branding. When purchasing produce or products from you vendors, you consider pricing, service and the reputation of the supplier. Are you ordering based strictly on price or are you considering your customers desires? I think both factors come into play.

Likewise, when you consider building the reputation of your venue, are you the place to be known as “the least expensive in the area”, “the place to be seen”, or are you the establishment known for offering “the best value in town”? These are all decisions that come into play when deciding how to “build your brand”.

Regardless of which direction you decide to take in establishing your individual venue’s reputation, the next step is to decide where and how to build your “brand”. Similarly, on the consumer side, where can you go to get the information you desire to learn more about such dining & entertainment establishments and their offerings?

Here at Venues NJ, we have developed our product (in both print and digital form) with a dual purpose: to provide both the venue proprietor and the consumer with a timely and informative editorial environment in which the former can build his/her brand, while allowing the latter to learn more about these venues and their offerings. We will continue to strive to always fulfill this dual purpose.

Bring the entire family for an evening of fun while donating to a very worthwhile cause. Enjoy a bounce house, balloon animals, face painting, taco truck, virgin frozen bar, DJ …and much more!
