2.1.4 INFORMATION ON THE EMISSION CON-TROL SYSTEM

The combustion process produces carbonmonoxide and hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbon con-trol is particularly important in that, under certainconditions and when exposed to direct sunlight, hydrocarbons undergo reactions which lead to theformation of photochemical smog. Carbonmonoxide does not react in the same way, but it ishighly toxic. MV Agusta uses a sequential multi-point electronic injection system and other meth-ods designed to cut carbon monoxide and hydro-carbon emissions.

Exhaust emission control systemThe exhaust emission control system is made upof the sequential multipoint injection (SMPI) sys-tem, which requires no adjustment. The exhaustemission control system is distinct from thecrankcase emission control system.

Crankcase emission control systemThe engine is equipped with a closed-crankcase

system designed to prevent the release ofcrankcase emissions into the atmosphere. Blow-by gases return to the combustion chamber viathe air filter and the injection system.

Problems relating to the vehicle’s emissionsShould the vehicle show any of the followingsymptoms, contact your MV Agusta dealer tohave it checked and if necessary repaired:1) Engine is difficult to start or stalls after starting.2) Idle speed is erratic.3) Misfiring or backfiring during acceleration.4) Afterburning.5) Poor performance (driveability) and excessive

consumption.

Do not use the motorcycle, nor try to service it,if you do not possess the necessary skills.

Full control of the motorcycle is fundamental tosafe riding. Concentration and a perfect physicalcondition are essential requirements for the rider. The road and weather conditions should also betaken into account.

Always wear suitable clothes, especially whentravelling by night (e.g. garments with fluorescentbands).

Always wear a helmet, even on short rides.

When travelling during daylight, keep the lowbeam on if allowed by local regulations.

Do not attach objects or wear garments thatcould adversely affect control and handling of themotorcycle.

When refuelling, switch off the engine andrefrain from smoking.

When refuelling, avoid spilling the fuel onto thetank and the exhaust pipes.

When refuelling, stay away from the vehicle toavoid inhaling harmful fumes. Should the fuelcome into contact with the skin or clothes, imme-diately wash with water and change the contami-nated garments.

Some parts of the vehicle become very hotduring use. Avoid contact with these parts andkeep the motorcycle out of the reach of children.

Always park the motorcycle safely and avoidleaving it unattended while the ignition key is inthe dashboard.

Park the vehicle where it is unlikely to bebumped into or damaged.

To prevent the vehicle from tipping over, neverpark it on soft or uneven ground.

Do not start the engine in closed places.Exhaust gases are toxic and can quickly saturatethe air and cause fainting or even death.

Before starting the engine in a closed place, ensure that the area is well ventilated.

Page 21: augusta f4 manual

SAFETY INFORMATION 2

2

While the vehicle is in motion, always rest thefeet on the specially designed supports.

While riding, always keep both hands on thehandlebars.

Maximum performance of the standard brakepads is obtained on dry roads. Also available onrequest are pads that ensure optimum perfor-mance even on wet roads (for further informationcontact an authorized service centre).

2.1.6 INSTALLING ACCESSORIESMV Agusta provides a range of accessories spe-cially designed for your vehicle. It is essential thatthese accessories are installed by an authorizedservice centre. The use of non-genuine acces-sories can make the vehicle unsafe by reducingits handling, stability and the effectiveness of thebraking system. For this reason, the installation ofany non-genuine accessory makes the warrantynull and void and relieves MV Agusta of allresponsibility.

2.1.7 VEHICLE LOADThe F4 S version is designed for use by the rideronly, whereas the F4 S 1+1 version can also seata passenger. To use the vehicle in complete safe-ty and in compliance with the Highway Code, it isessential that the following maximum load condi-tions are never exceeded:

F4 S 325 kg (717 lbs)F4 S 1+1 405 kg (893 lbs)

These values are also shown on the plate fixed tothe left side of the steering head tube.

Page 22: augusta f4 manual

2.1.8 MODIFICATIONS

Any modifications made to the vehicle (e.g. alter-ation and/or removal of components) can makethe vehicle unsafe or unlawful. Modifying the vehi-cle immediately voids the warranty and relievesMV Agusta of all responsibility.

2.1.9 COMPETITIONS

WARNINGRiding the vehicle in competitionsrequires considerable skill and experi-ence as well as an accurate setup of themotorcycle.

MV Agusta has designed a number of specialcomponents for use in competitions and/or sport-ing events. The use of such components is strict-ly limited to areas closed to traffic. Failure toobserve this restriction constitutes a breach of the

2.1.10 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SAFE RID-ING

Besides being a means of transport, your motor-cycle is a source of recreation and excitement. However, the configuration of the vehicle does notexclude a certain amount of risk. To ensure maxi-mum safety, in addition to scrupulously observingthe indications provided in the previous para-graphs, it is essential to take a few additional pre-cautions.In particular:

Before starting offFollow all the directions given in the section “PRE-DELIVERY CHECKS”. Conduct an overall checkof all safety-related aspects of the motorcycle.

Familiarizing with the vehicleThe rider’s ability and his mechanical skills formthe basis of riding safety. It is advisable to practiseriding in areas without traffic until you have

become familiar with the vehicle and its controls.Remember: practice leads to perfection.

Being aware of one’s limitsWhen riding, never exceed your limits nor thoseimposed by law. Being aware of your limits andacting accordingly will help you avoid accidents.

Adverse weather conditionsBe very careful when riding in adverse weatherconditions. On wet roads, for example, the brak-ing distance doubles as a result of reduced tyretraction. It is therefore necessary to travel at mod-erate speed and avoid abrupt braking and accel-eration. Pay particular attention when riding onslippery surfaces such as road markings, man-holes, level crossings, bridges, gratings, etc.Considering that a motorcycle cannot provide thesame degree of shock protection as a motor vehi-cle, it is essential to adopt a “defensive” riding atti-tude, particularly in the adverse weather condi-tions described above.

Page 24: augusta f4 manual

- 24 -

SAFETY INFORMATION 2

2

Before changing lanes, besides using therearview mirror, turn your head slightly and glanceback to make sure that the road is clear.Relying on the rearview mirror alone puts the riderat risk of misjudging the distance and speed of thevehicles at the back or not seeing them at all.

Change gears as necessary to ensure that theproper gear ratio is chosen in all riding conditions, allowing the engine to revolve at optimum speedat all times.Avoid high gear ratios when travelling at reducedspeed (excessively low rpm) as well as low gearratios when travelling at high speed (excessivelyhigh rpm).

Special attention should be given to the brak-ing system, which plays a key role in ensuringsafety. When braking, always take account of thespeed of the vehicle and the condition of the roadsurface. The braking action should always be applied gen-

tly and gradually to both wheels, an ability thatcan only be learned from experience.Performing this operation and, more in general, riding the vehicle always requires the utmost care. Therefore, caution should be exercised by allusers, and in particular by inexperienced riders.

When covering long distances downhill, reduce the speed of the vehicle by closing thethrottle and using a low gear ratio to take advan-tage of the exhaust brake. The front and rearbrakes should also be used with moderation, inorder to prevent them from overheating andreduce their effectiveness.

When rapid acceleration is required (e.g. whenovertaking), change down to obtain better pickup.

When the engine is running at high speed, gearing down several times in rapid successioncan cause the engine to race. As a result, the reardriving wheel may lock, making the vehicle diffi-cult to control and causing damage to the engine.

Page 25: augusta f4 manual

- 25 -

SAFETY INFORMATION 2

2

Keep at a safe distance from the precedingvehicles and adjust the speed to the weather andtraffic conditions. Remember that, as the vehiclepicks up speed, the stopping distance increasesand the motorcycle becomes more difficult to con-trol. In any case, never exceed the speed limitsimposed by the Highway Code.

It is strictly forbidden to drink alcoholic bever-ages or take drugs before riding. Even very smallamounts of these substances adversely affect therider’s ability to control the vehicle.

2.1.11 PROTECTIVE CLOTHINGHelmet wearing is compulsory under the HighwayCode. The helmet must be securely fastened and,if it is of the open-face type, specially designedglasses are also required.Suitable protective clothing, though not requiredby law, is strongly recommended. In particular, the following items should be worn:

A strong, close-fitting and easy-to-fasten vest.A collar for protecting the throat from the air

flow.Supple, reinforced gloves providing both sen-

sitivity and protection.Strong, close-fitting trousers covering the legs

completely.Soft, reinforced boots providing both sensitivi-

ty and protection.

The items mentioned above are available fromany specialized shop.We recommend buying brightly coloured clothes,as they make the rider easier to see at night andin the fog.In any case, the clothes must allow complete free-dom of movement and not hamper the rider in anyway. In addition, they must have no loose partscapable of catching in the control levers, thefootrests, the wheels, the drive chain, etc.

Page 26: augusta f4 manual

- 26 -

SAFETY INFORMATION 2

2

WARNINGProtective clothes do not afford com-plete protection against the risk of per-sonal injury in case of accident. It is therefore essential not to bedeceived by the false sense of securitythat is provided by motorcycle clothing. When riding, always adopt a cautiousattitude and follow the recommenda-tions given in the previous paragraphs.

Some of the operations can be carried out by the user, provid-ing he or she possesses the requisite skills. If unskilled, havethe operations performed by an authorized service centre.

Failure to perform the recommended operations makes thewarranty null and void.

As a rule maintenance operations must be performed whilethe motorcycle is on the rear stand after switching off theengine and setting the start switch to OFF. This does not applyto the verification of the fluid levels.

When necessary, top up or renew the lubricants and the fluidsusing the prescribed products (see § 6.3).

After the first 36,000 km (22,400 mi) the operations must beperformed at the same intervals shown in the tables.
