Dear Prime Minister Netanyahu,
We write to request your immediate intervention to prevent passage of the legislation being brought forward by MK David Rotem.
We are deeply concerned about the intention to grant the Chief Rabbinate sole control over conversion in Israel. Such legislation would be an open attack on the legitimacy of non-Orthodox Jewry, which composes the majority of world Jewry.
While we are supportive of efforts to create greater acces-sibility to conversion courts in Israel, the overall impact of the Rotem Bill will set back these efforts. Should this bill be enacted, it will exacerbate a widening gap between Diaspora and Israel communities, which we are working very hard to avoid.
Therefore, we believe it is imperative that you, as leader of Israel, and as one who cares deeply about the well-being of Klal Yisrael, intervene and urge immediate withdrawal of this bill.

However, it is our duty to speak out against the lack of civility and the narrow mindedness on the part of those who would disenfranchise Reform and Conservative Jews.

Before 9 a.m., I was arrested for carry-ing a sefer Torah on the women’s side of the Western Wall. At
the same time just miles away, the conversion bill - that would change forever the definition of who is a Jew in Israel - passed its first vote in the Knesset.
The ultra-Orthodox are ap-plauding the events of today. They succeeded in preventing women from carrying a Torah and praying at the holiest site of the Jewish people, and they moved one step closer to eras-ing all recognition ever achieved for Reform and Conservative conversion in Israel.
It seems like it was a good day for them, and they may be cel-ebrating. But in fact today was a dark day for the ultra-Orthodox in Israel, and for those working against religious pluralism and civil rights around the world. The real outcome of their “vic-tories” will be the enlivening of the 85% of Diaspora Jewry, which is non-Orthodox, belong-ing in large part to the Reform or Conservative Movement.
The events of today bring to light the moral bankruptcy of the antiquated, violent, and intolerant Judaism that defines the ultra-Orthodox strand of Judaism in Israel today. This stands in contrast to our pro-gressive Judaism that is com-mitted to the equality inherent
Conversion bill.Please send the attached letter
demanding that the Israeli gov-ernment listen to our voice, our unified voice calling for a Juda-ism of openness and tolerance. This is not an issue affecting only converts - it is an issue that threatens the very unity of the Jewish people.
Today starts the countdown of your moving into action to re-
ject this dangerous brand of Ju-daism. Our voices will be heard, and through all of us working together, the ultra-Orthodox “victories” of today will prove obsolete.

Thanks to Kelly Markowitz and Therese Cirafisi for
their collaboration on the Bulletin. They have given it a facelift, while making
more efficient use of space in order to cut down on
production costs.
With the High Holy Days upon us and the New Year approaching, it is
appropriate to look back at this past year and ask oneself, “Did I do they best I could do to make a difference in the world? Did I answer the call towards Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) to the best of my ability?”
As a congregation, we can say proudly, “Yes, yes we did.“ Every month we are feeding the homeless at the soup kitchen, reaching an average of 200 people daily. Our youth are doing their part in their individual Bar Mitzvah projects, ranging from putting on mini concerts at the nursing homes to creating oyster mats to helping restore our shorelines to collecting movies to help build a movie library at the local hospital. They take the lead with us as a congregation.
We constantly make sure the Jewish Federation’s Jerry Doliner Food pantry is stocked though our High Holy Day Food Drive. Our Youth Group’s Trick or Treat for Hunger, participation in the Walk for Hunger, and the TBE School’s Thanksgiving Basket program all help those in need as well. This year, our Religious/Sunday school students put smiles on a few faces through “Operation Smile” with their tzedakah collections.
Oh yes, and we all have fun doing our part, with events like the fundraising dance/concert put on with Jenn Cleary, myself, and “The Greatest Moments in Time” group, featuring our own Tim, Lucille, & Luke to benefit the Federation’s backpack program; some of my colleagues joined me for the Bima Broadway and Beyond concert and silent auction for Family Renew Communities which gives a hand up not a hand out. These were both very successful events.
I would be remiss if I left out our gift card program for Chanukah and Christmas, started by the TBE School and picked up by our youth groups and congregation. Each year, this program ensures no child, regardless of age, is left out from receiving a gift for the holidays.
These are just a small portion of what WE, as a congregation, accomplished this year. And we all consistently come through to make ideas turn into reality.
Our task as a congregation for the coming year is to continue this work towards Tikkun Olam -- attend the benefit concerts that we will be featuring,
support the mitzvah projects of our youth, contribute to the food drives, and volunteer when the call is put out -- no matter where or how it is needed.
But that is not enough! Make it a priority to do at least one more thing as an individual and as a family towards Tikkun Olam. Go that extra mile; give that extra smile . . . make 5771 the year of Tikkun Olam.

It’s August, and that means in the Bigman household one thing for certain – either live or by DVR, the
Yankee game will be viewed. I understand thanks to Malka’s generosity of a gift to Rabbi of the MLB package that the same tradition occurs at the Altmans. As I write this, the All-Star break has just passed and the Yanks are in first place, locked in a fun pennant race with the local Rays and the hated BoSox.
What, pray tell, is this article doing in our Temple Bulletin? Well, fellow Congregants I am here to remind you that we are living in the golden age of Jews in Baseball. Four years ago,
Summertime, Baseball & JewsI published an article called “Baseball’s SuperJews” which detailed some of our brethren’s hardball achievements includ-ing having a record 22 Jewish players then in the majors. www.Jewishmajorleaguers.org lists 142 Jewish baseball play-ers throughout history through 2009. Twenty-one Jewish base-ball players are currently active including All-Stars Ian Kinsler and Ryan Braun (who made the highlight diving catch in the All-Star game), past All-Star Kevin Youkilis and Rookie of the Year candidate Ike (Issac Benjamin) Davis, first baseman for the N.Y. Mets.
Two years ago, N.Y. sports-
caster and writer, Howard Megdal, published a book called Baseball Talmud, a great read on the best Jews historically in baseball position by posi-tion. It’s a fun read on a day of a Yankee rain-out or during the long off-season. On my Barnes and Noble wish list are 2 books published in 2006 & 2010 by Burton & Benita Boxerman – a 2 volume set on Jews and Baseball with the 1st volume pre-1949 and the more recent one 1949-2008. You can even buy a set of Jewish Baseball player trading cards at www.jewishmajorleaguers.org. Now, circulating around Jewish Festi-vals and Film Festivals through-
out the U.S. and Israel is a new documentary called “Jews and Baseball” at www.jewsandbase-ball.com.
A young Bostonian even has a blog at jewsinbaseball.blogspot.com, where you can not only track current big leaguers but the good minor leaguers coming through the system.
Even the Daytona Cubs on August 1st celebrate Jewish Heritage Night.

Topic: “American Pastoral” by Philip Roth
This book is a Pulitzer prize winner. Everyone who read “The Plot Against America” is excited to read this great novel.
Murray Arnold has more than 40 years of coaching experience,
beginning at the high school level from 1957-68, where he led DeLand High School to the state title in 1963.
He then served as an assistant at Florida State University for two seasons, helping guide the Seminoles to a combined 41-12 record and a Top 10 final ranking in 1970. Arnold landed his first head coaching job at Birmingham-Southern the following season where he turned a struggling program
into an NAIA powerhouse. In eight seasons, his teams won 159 games and made three national tournament appearances.
After his successful stint as a head coach, Arnold made the jump back to Division I serving as an assistant at Mississippi State for a year before earning the head coaching job at Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1979.
The Maryland native won 21 or more games in five out of his six seasons with the Mocs, won four Southern Conference championships, played in three NCAA Tournaments and two
NITs. He was twice named SoCon Coach of the Year. It was then that the pros took notice and recruited him to assist Stan Albeck of the Chicago Bulls.
After helping the Bulls to the NBA Playoffs in 1986, Arnold was the head coach at Western Kentucky for four years, then coached professionally in Australia for four seasons before returning to the states to head the Okaloosa-Walton
Community College men’s basketball team. Earning Coach of the Year honors once again, Arnold led the Raiders to the 1995 NJCAA National Championship.
Finally, in 1997, Arnold took the head-coaching job at Stetson University where he finished out his career in three seasons with the Hatters. Although retired, he still calls DeLand home.

It’s been awhile since the economic recession hit, but Temple Beth-El is still feeling the aftershock. While Temple membership
is up, Temple dues are down. The only thing that keeps rising is the cost to run the Temple. While we have tightened our
belts, we still continue to struggle. Temple Beth-El prides itself on delivering top-notch services to the entire Temple community, as well as the
Jewish community as a whole. It’s at this time, we would like to ask you, our congregants, for your help in filling those areas where help is needed most. Listed to the right are a few areas where you can help.
Anyone can help — whether you can contribute a day a week or just one hour a week. Some areas are one-time items, while others may be recurring on a regular basis.
Whether you are a student looking for community service hours, or a stay-at-home mom, or a retired person, we could use your help. Everyone has some expertise that I’m sure they would like to share.
As you can see, there are many areas you can help. It can be one hour a week or more. Whatever time you can give would be appreciated. If you feel you can help in an area that has not been listed, let us know. All help is welcomed.

Social Action: Family Renew
In June, Family Renew Commu-nity hosted an Ice Cream Social fundraiser to aid and house families in our community. Tem-ple Beth-El members chipped in
to support this cause. Special thanks to Lyle Trachman and his family for their generous support. Also, ku-dos to Isaac Wagner who operated children's games during the event.
Temple members should be proud of their long relation-ship with Family Renew which has aided hundreds of families since its inception.
The social was not only a fundraiser but also a way to
unify our community. To overcome prejudice and stereotyping, it is important to nourish relationships with other faiths. In our association with FRC, we have contributed to the well-being of our community as well as encouraged others to do the same.
In addition to delicious deserts, there was entertainment for all ages. Silent auction items donated by area merchants generated funds to pro-vide transitional housing to homeless families, who would have no place to stay if not for FRC — traditional shel-ters won't allow males and females together causing families to fracture. Residents are required to find jobs and save money so after time can move into their own homes.
FRC provides a hand up not a hand out, gving structure and training to these families, ensuring they can be self-sufficient upon moving on. Temple Beth-El is, has been and, hopefully, always will be a part of this community-wide Mitzvah.
There are many ways for you to get involved in this organization’s charitable activities no matter how little time, money or skills you have. Just call the TBE office and let us know your interests. Get involved. To do Mitzvah is to praise our God.

The Kitchen — A take charge person is needed to make sure it’s clean, organized, all foods in the refrigerator are within expiration date limits.•Friday night Onegs: Two people are needed to stay a little later to help clean up. This involves unplugging the coffee pots, bringing foods into the kitchen and wrap-ping the leftovers and placing items in refrigerator. Sign up for one Friday night or several. Also, why not bring an occasional dessert.•Outside grounds clean-up: Always lots of weeds that need to be pulled out.•Clerical: Copying, mailings, addressing, etc.•Office work: Someone is needed to sit in the front office Monday-Friday from 2:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. to answer phones, answer doors, light office work — one day a week or more.•bulletin: Need someone to solicit ads for the Bulletin. The cost of printing the Bulletin keeps rising and we need more ads to pay for it.
URGENT APPEAL
Because we were overwhelmed by so many people coming for assistance for food at the Federation’s Jerry Doliner
Food Bank, we were not going to do the School Backpack project this year, a project that we had been doing for over 15 years.
But we have had so many calls from teachers, parents and students asking for backpacks filled with supplies, we wondered how we could have the time to again do this backpack project. We asked our supplier if there was a way he could help us. He came up with a great solution. He has agreed to pack and
deliver all school supplies to the counselors of the different schools. We have learned from experience during the 15 years that we have been doing these programs which the counselors know best who are in need.
We also realize that if parents are unable to afford the basics, they certainly will be unable to afford supplying their children with the necessary tools to
achieve their best in school.
Therefore, we are again going to reach out to you our caring donors and ask you to give what you can afford during these trying economic times. This will enable us to help the less fortunate students in the neediest schools. One hundred percent of the funds donated will purchase school supplies. One quality backpack filled with supplies costs us $25.00 — these backpacks would cost a minimum of $80 retail.

The summer months bring a quiet and more relaxed atmosphere to the Temple halls as most
of the school students are off with their families, enjoying their summer break. But the Temple office has been humming along as we transition duties and responsibilities among the Temple and school offices.
You’ll notice the Temple Bulletin has taken on a more streamlined look, while continuing to provide all of the same information to the congregation. It’s all in a more different, more space-efficient format. We extend our sincere thanks to Kelly Markowitz for her help in this massive undertaking. She has done a remarkable job creating the new template for us.

We welcome Jill Brok to the Temple Accounting Office and she is doing a great job transitioning into the role since Charlene’s departure. We bid farewell to Charlene and will miss her smiling face around the Temple office. We wish her all the best in her future with Michael and her family!
On a personal note, my husband Chuck will be home this weekend to pick up our daughter, Alexis, and take her out on the truck with him for a week or so. They enjoy this special “daddy/daughter” time which has become a regular summer activity for them. After they return, he will be home for a week for some “wife” time with me!
Of course, I look forward to my time with him and can’t wait to see him. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

My Bar Mitzvah project is to collect money for Magen David Adom’s
(Red Star of David) Red Bag of Courage project in Israel. This project is for first responder bags. First responder bags contain all the necessary supplies for the first person on the scene of an accident/incident to aid and stabilize someone until an ambulance arrives and can take over. Each bag cost $1000.00 dollars. My goal is to have enough money to buy at least 2 bags. I hope you can help me reach my goal as
