One kernel of grain isenough to change theworld.
That was one of thepowerful sentimentsexpressed during arecent regional farm tourheld near Kingman.
Members of theKingman MarketingClub, which hosted thetour for graduate stu-dents and faculty mem-bers from the Universityof Alberta’s ResourceEconomics and Environ-mental Sociology (REES)Program, heard a lot ofpositive comments fromparticipants during theannual event.
The tour showcasedseveral of the club mem-
bers’ crops and farmingoperations.
The tour was spear-headed four years ago byKingman area residentand agricultural econom-ics professor WillPattison, and it was agreat learning opportuni-ty for students and pro-ducers alike.
Pattison said it was awonderful chance forstudents from othercountries to seeCanadian crops and talkto producers, and forproducers to be in con-tact with students andfaculty and learn moreabout the academic sideof things and how oneinfluences and affects theother.
“For many of them,(the students), they have
never been on a farm,”added Pattison, whobelieves you can’t put adollar value on the tour’sexperience, which hesays has a powerfulimpact and influence onparticipants.
The graduate students, who hailed fromZimbabwe, Iran, India,China, Hungary, Burma,Ukraine, and the UnitedStates, all commented onhow fortunate they are totake part in the tour.
Several of the studentscommented that agricul-ture was an abstract idea,or a concept viewedthrough the internet orstudied in textbooks; sobeing able to see andtouch the product andconverse with producerswas a definite eye opener
for them.A few of the graduate
students said it wasn’t
their first crop tour, butthey did say they alwayslearn new things each
and every time they par-ticipate.See KINGMAN P2

One kernel of grain is enough to change the worldRecent regional farm tour hosted by Kingman Marketing Club has profound effect on participants from many nations
Graduate students from other nations participating in the tour said that first handcontact with producers and crops was an eye-opening experience.
There’s no substitutefor learning from expe-rience, and participantsgot a chance to viewand learn about fababeans, barley, peas, canola, wheat, anddirect seeding in sod, aswell as a beef cattleoperation.
“Things like this givethem a completely dif-ferent point of view,”said Pattison.
Professor Terry Vee-man, who has attendedseveral of the club’stours, says it's a greatopportunity for him torenew and gain newknowledge.
Veeman also com-mented on the socialcapital of the marketingclub, including the con-tributions membershave made to the com-munity and the valuethey have added to thelives of people in thearea.
“I applaud your dedi-cation.”
The Kingman Mark-eting Club is longestrunning marketing clubin the province and hasbeen existence for near-ly 20 years.
It has a current mem-bership of 20 producers, and representationfrom farms ranging insize from 800 to morethan 3,000 acres.
Collectively, the clubmembers constitutearound 40,000 acres ofcrop input purchasesand grain sales locally.
Members reside nearthe communities ofTofield, Bardo, RoundHill, Kingman, HayLakes, and Armena, and meet regularly dur-ing winter to shareinformation and lendsupport to one another.
Approximately 70people attended thecrop tour and barbeque, held at the farm of Jimand Denise Otto nearKingman on Aug. 1.

Lorraine PoulsenEditor - Weekly Review
Watching stormchasers on television, atwork in the southernUnited States, is com-mon, but to talk to a localstorm chaser is just plaincool.
Alberta weather hasbeen exceptionally spo-radic in the past fewmonths.
An unseasonablywarm winter turned intoa soggy, stormy springand summer, creatingconditions only a stormchaser could love.
On Wednesday, July25, these great photosalong with an informa-tive email arrived from24-year-old storm chaserNevin deMilliano of FortSaskatchewan.
When the WeeklyReview contacteddeMilliano, he explainedthat he took the photosjust south of Ryley, onJuly 23.
According to deMill-iano, the supercell hephotographed was partof a line of severe stormstracking north betweenEdmonton and MedicineHat and stretching all theway to the Saskatchewanborder.
“An advancing lowpressure system in com-bination with extremeamounts of low levelwind shear, moisture, and daytime heatingmade the atmosphereconducive to the forma-tion of supercells andpossible tornadoes.“Just to the west of the
Ryley cell was another inCamrose which also pro-duced a wall cloud andshowed signs of rotation, which led to several fun-nels being spotted.
“Although Environ-ment Canada issued atornado warning, theyalso confirmed thatstorm chasers verifiedfunnels but nothing thatextended fully to
ground.“The wall cloud we
targeted was primed fortornado genesis but alack of rotation prevent-ed it from producing.
“The cell near Vikingalso had reports of a wallcloud.
“A wall cloud (orpedestal cloud) isdescribed as a large, tow-ering cloud formationthat develops beneaththe base of a cumulonim-bus cloud that oftenforms tornadoes.
“It is typically beneaththe rain-free base (RFB)portion of a thunder-
storm, and indicates thearea of the strongestupdraft within a storm.” Wall clouds are formed
by a process known asentrainment, when aninflow of warm, moistair rises and converges, overpowering the wet,rain-cooled air from thenormally downwinddowndraft.
As the warm air con-tinues to entrain thecooler air, the air temper-ature drops and the dewpoint increases.
As this air continues torise, it becomes more sat-urated with moisture,
which results in addi-tional clouds, usually inthe form of a wall cloud.
“As a storm chaser Ican say it was the mostwell defined wall I hadseen live.
“This same systemmoved into Saskat-chewan the next day andproduced three to fourtornadoes.
“It was great to chase
in your counties andnear your towns.”
deMilliano has beenchasing storms for aboutsix years, graduallyincreasing his radius oftravel to intercept stormsin the last two years.
According to him, safechasing requires manyresources, knowledge,

and experience.He says trained and
experienced chasersknow where to locatethemselves on a stormwith the help of 3G cell-phone coverage, weath-er apps, andEnvironment Canada’sDoppler Radar, and usu-ally staying out of therain or hail on the southor southwest side of asupercell, depending onstorm motion and direc-tion.
“Chasers know to fol-low the storm ratherthan dive straightthrough it.
“Safety is the mostimportant thing onevery chase.
“We try to remain theones who are chasingrather than the ones whoare chased.
“Also, it should neverbe done at night oralone. I always chasewith a partner, team, orother storm chaser.”
He says he has neverbeen in trouble but hashad to “punch the core”to get into position to seea developing wall cloud.
“I only do this whenthe storm is not tornadowarned.
“Otherwise with allthe rain and large hail Icould drive right into thepath of a tornado.
“Hail and low visibili-ty can be very dangerousso generally we try toavoid it.
“Also, the most deadlyand dangerous part ofany storm is lightning.Chasers are scared of it;it’s unpredictable andcan travel long dis-tances.”
deMilliano says chas-ing is a passion for him.
“I have always lovedsevere weather.
“Mother Nature’smost powerful stormsare tornadoes, which canreach wind speeds of upto 483 kilometres/hour.
“The simple fact that atiny, puffy, white cumu-lus cloud, given the rightenvironment, canexplode into a massivesupercell capable of thisfascinates me.
“It’s less of an adrena-line rush and more of aninterest in watching thegenesis of the storm.
“It’s not always aboutseeing a tornado, manystorms are visuallyappealing and can sus-tain fierce frontlinewinds without torna-does.
“The other aspect is
that EnvironmentCanada and most otherweather outlets rely onstorm chasers and stormspotters to confirm tor-nado touchdowns.
“This is one of the pri-mary ways a TornadoWatch or SevereThunderstorm Warningcan be upgraded to aTornado Warning.
“Science still strugglesto explain why somestorms will produce tor-nadoes and some willnot, this fascinates memore than anything be-cause we know whatconditions can lead totornadic cells but sciencecan’t say in certainty ifthey will or where theywill.”
