AUGUSTCRAFTMONTH2013

WELCOME August Craft Month is an annual celebration of contemporary craft in Northern Ireland which is now in its seventh year. In 2013 our theme “The Culture of Making” has a particular focus on designer-makers living and working in Northern Ireland and how they have been influenced by the rich and diverse culture of the place they live and work in. This theme ties in with the year long focus on all aspects of Northern Irish culture that 2013 brings. This is explored through a rich tapestry of exhibitions, workshops, talks, galleries, and retail opportunities.

You can read about them here and on our website. There you can also visit our new interactive Craft Map function which includes details of makers’ studios, galleries and shops around Northern Ireland which are open to the public to visit. It contains beautiful images of their craft as well as links to videos of makers at work.

There are lots of opportunities for all the family and their friends to get involved right across the region and we invite you to take the opportunity to connect with and experience our culture and the best of contemporary craft by seeing, making or buying it!

This exhibition will showcase new work from 34 eminent makers. These contemporary practitioners represent a diverse range of craft disciplines and embody a wide variety of cultural identities and backgrounds. Makers were challenged to explore some questions around culture and produce a piece of work in response to this reflective investigation.

CultureCraft will ideally embed contemporary craft practice in the psyche of the north west audience. It is an opportunity to facilitate new forms of creative engagement with a community well acquainted with progressive artistic activity. This unique project which comprises of an exhibition and series of workshops will introduce the concept of craft as a vehicle for creative expression.

Four of the artists have been selected to lead master-classes aimed at building networks in communities. This will be accomplished in two ways; through encouraging people to identify their own and other people’s needs and thereby bring about a culture of understanding and empathy and by exposing individuals to specialised skills that may be assimilated and enrich future community creative endeavours.

The exhibition is contextualised by essays from a number of leading academics, including Dr Audrey Whitty, Dr Jessica Hemmings, Dr Joseph McBrinn and Professor Declan McGonagle all of which will feature in the CultureCraft catalogue.

For more information please see page 12.
