AUGUST 9th CHARLOTTE (46-69) at PAWTUCKET (56-59) 7:05 pm Charlotte Knights RHP Carson Fulmer (7-7, 5.56) vs. Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Justin Haley (1-0, 2.67) Sweep Dreams – The Pawtucket Red Sox bid for a 3-game sweep of the Charlotte Knights when they play the finale of this series tonight at 7:05 pm at McCoy Stadium. The PawSox have rolled to 7-0 and 9-2 victories the last two nights and this evening have a chance to record their first sweep since sweeping a 4-game set at Syracuse from July 13-16. Pawtucket has been swept in back-to-back 3-game series prior to this week (August 1-3 at home vs. Syracuse and August 4-6 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre). Pawtucket had also been swept in their last two series here at home before this week (July 20-23 in a 4-game set vs. Norfolk and the aforementioned 3-game series vs. Syracuse from August 1-3). Pawtucket is 13-13-9 in their 34 series thus far (13 series wins, 13 losses, and 9 series splits) including this series victory which they have already clinched no matter the outcome tonight. See ‘ya Next Year - This week marks Charlotte’s only visit to McCoy this season. The teams conclude their season-series tonight (PawSox lead 3 games to 2). Pawtucket and Charlotte won’t meet again for over 11 months…until the PawSox play in Charlotte next July 16 and then here at McCoy next July27. The only other time these two clubs faced each other this year came back on April 18-20 in Charlotte (Knights took 2 of 3). This Homestand - The PawSox penultimate homestand of the season (2-0 thus far) continues with a 4-game series vs. Columbus starting tomorrow night. The Clippers pay their only visit of 2017 for games Thursday & Friday at 7:05 pm, Saturday at 6:15 pm, and Sunday at 1:35 pm. After this week the Sox have just one homestand remaining from August 21-27 (4-games vs. Buffalo and 3-games vs. Lehigh Valley). More Special Events and Fun at McCoy – This homestand once again features a host of special events at McCoy. Friday will be Nomar Garciappara bobblehead night for the first 3,000 fans along with an appearance by Hall of Famer Wade Boggs who will be on hand during the game to meet fans. On Saturday, the PawSox will have Super Hero characters roaming the ballpark along with another post-game fireworks show set to a Super Heroes theme. And Sunday will be Team Card Set giveaway for the first 5,000 fans. The Thursday night game will be televised live on NESN at 7:05 pm and Saturday will be another myRITV telecast at 6:15 pm. 8 Was Enough – Prior to their well-pitched and well-played triumphs the past two nights, the PawSox had lost 8 in a row overall from July 29 – August 6 and 8 straight at home as well from July 19 – August 3. They have presently won two in a row for the first time since sweeping a doubleheader at Indianapolis on July 28. Tonight they can make it 3 straight wins for the first time since their 8-game winning streak from July 8-18. Ten Pinned – While dropping 8 of their last 10 games, the Sox have only been outscored by a 45-39 margin. That’s because they have suffered six losses by 2-runs, one loss by 1-run, and another defeat by 8 runs (10-2 vs. Syracuse on August 1) before coming up with 7-0 and 9-2 wins the past two nights. Pawtucket is 9-20 in 2-run games this season (the .310 winning pct. in those games the lowest in the league). Streaksville – Pawtucket has been a streaky team this season…in order this season they have had a 4-game winning streak (April 11-14), a 4-game losing streak (April 20-27), a 4-game winning streak (April 30 – May 5), a 9-game losing streak (May 10-19), a 6-game winning streak (May 24-30), a 5-game home winning streak (June 5-9), an 8-game losing streak (G2 on June 17-23), a 4-game losing streak (July 2 – Game 1 on July 5), an 8-game winning streak (from July 8-18), a 6-game losing streak (July 19-24), and their recent 8-game skid (July 29 – August 6). Highs and Lows – The PawSox are now 56-59 on the season. This past Sunday the Sox had fallen 5-games below .500 for the first time since May 27 (19-24). Pawtucket dropped to a season-low 8-games under .500 on May 23 (16-24) for the first time since they ended the 2015 season with a 59-85 record. On July 18 the PawSox were a season-best 6-games over .500 at 50-44. Series Business – Pawtucket – up 2-0 in this 3-game series vs. Charlotte but most recently swept in back-to-back 3-game sets (at home vs. Syracuse last week and at Scranton/WB this past weekend) – has now won 5, lost 3, and split 4 of their last 11 series. Pawtucket is 13-13-9 in their 34 series thus far (13 series wins, 13 losses, and 9 series splits) including this series which they have already clinched no matter the outcome tonight. Last year the Sox went 20-17-7 in their 44 series played. August Moon - The Sox are 2-6 to begin a busy August that has them slated to play 31 games in 31 days. They are hitting .232 thus far this month (63-for-271) with 10 HR in 8 games while pitchers have a 4.69 ERA (37 ER in 71 IP). July Celebrations Over– The Sox finished 15-14 during the month of July. Pawtucket hit .275 this July (271-for-985) with 19 HR and they were 15-14 with a 3.45 ERA (96 ER in 250.2 IP) with 26 HRA. Ryan Court (.353 in 18 games) and Matt Dominguez (.350 in 22 games) led the PawSox in hitting in July while Bryce Brentz again paced the club in both HR (3) & RBI (16). Marcus Walden was the winningest PawSox pitcher in July going 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA in 5 games while Jalen Beeks had the lowest ERA among starters at 1.96 in 4 GS. When Last We Met – Pawtucket’s 3-game set at sparkling BB&T Ballpark in uptown Charlotte was a well-played series from April 18-20. The clubs split the first two games as the Knights took the opener, 3-1 (in 2 hours & 16 minutes) but the Sox evened matters with a 4-0 victory the next night (behind Velazquez, Workman, Boyer and Ramirez in 2 hours & 37 minutes). Charlotte won the series outright with a 6-4 victory in the finale on April 20 (taking 2 hours & 54 minutes to complete the rubber game). Stats vs. the Knights in 2017 – The PawSox are hitting .248 in the 5 games vs. Charlotte (41-for-165) with 6 HR…by Bradley, Jr., Brentz (2), Dominguez, Rutledge, and Marrero. Sox pitchers are 3-2 with a 2.30 ERA (11 ER in 43 IP) with 5 HRA. The PawSox have out-scored the Knights, 25-11 thus far in the season-series. Pawtucket vs. Charlotte Last Season – Pawtucket finished 5-2 vs. the Knights last year going 2-1 in Charlotte and 3-1 in Pawtucket. The Sox hit .286 vs. Charlotte last season with 12 HR and 35 runs scored in 7 games. Sox pitchers were 5-2 with a 3.48 ERA vs. the Knights with just 1 HRA and 24 runs allowed overall. Charlotte’s Web – By virtue of going 5-2 vs. Charlotte last season (and 3-2 this season), the PawSox have taken over the lead in the all-time regular-season series with the Knights by a slim 113-110 margin since Charlotte joined the IL in 1993. (This count does not include the 2012 Governors’ Cup Championship series won by the PawSox, 3 games to 0). The PawSox are 54-57 at McCoy Stadium vs. the Knights but 59-53 in Charlotte during regular-season play. They were 52-47 at Knights Castle in Fort Mill, SC and they are 7-6 at beautiful BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte. Against Charlotte Recently – The PawSox finished 1-5 vs. Charlotte in 2015, but the Sox won the season-series over Charlotte by a 6-2 count in 2014. Pawtucket finished 3-4 vs. Charlotte in 2013 and 3-5 vs. Charlotte during the 2012 regular-season. However, Pawtucket then went 3-0 vs. Charlotte in the 2012 Governors’ Cup Finals (2-0 at McCoy and 1-0 at Knights Stadium). The PawSox had finished 4-4 vs. Charlotte during each of the previous four seasons (2008-2011). Before going 6-2 vs. the Knights in 2014, the PawSox had last won a season-series over Charlotte during both the 2006 and 2007 seasons (by 5-3 margins) after having gone 1-7 vs. Charlotte each of the prior two seasons (2004 & 2005). Northern Exposure –The PawSox played 41 straight games vs. IL North clubs between June 5 – July 16. Pawtucket finally played outside their division from July 17 – August 30. Pawtucket is 36-39 vs. North rivals, 8-7 vs. the IL West, and 12-13 vs. the South. Last year the Sox went 44-45 vs. the IL North. The Sox struggled to a 36-55 record vs. North rivals in 2015. Until 2015, the Sox had only one losing season vs. North opponents in the previous seven years from 2008-2014 (going 32-48 in 2009). A Long Way Back - The 4th-place PawSox trail Scranton/WB by a season-high 18-games in the IL North and trail Lehigh Valley (and others) by 10½-games in the IL wild card race (-12½ GB was their furthest wild card deficit of the season – most recently on Sunday). The PawSox have just 27 games remaining (12 at home and 15 on the road). Pawtucket had pulled to within 7½-games of 1st-place on June 16 and at the same time were within just 4-games of the wild card spot. Sad Endings and Close Calls – Pawtucket has lost 18 games during an opponent’s final at-bat of the game (compared to 7 such victories during their own last AB). The PawSox are 12-16 in 1-run games, 9-20 in 2-run games, and 4-9 in extra innings. Home vs. Road – The Sox are 29-29 at McCoy on the year – they had reached a season-high of 8-games over .500 at home on June 17 at 21-13 but have lost 16 of their last 24 at McCoy. They are 27-30 on the road. Pawtucket pitchers have a 3.52 ERA at home (197 ER in 504 IP) compared to 4.02 on the road (217 ER in 485.2 IP). The PawSox are hitting .256 at McCoy (471-for-1838) with 57 HR compared to .257 on the road (510-for-1986) with 48 HR.
McCoy History – Pawtucket’s 10-game McCoy winning streak (May 24 – June 9) tied the franchise-record for longest home winning streak and marked just the third time in PawSox history they had reached that level…the others coming in 1984 (June 27 – July 12) and 1995 (July 26 – August 15). Up and Down Streaks – Pawtucket’s 8-game winning streak from July 5 (G2) – July 18 was their longest since the 2014 season when they won 11 straight from July 13-26. Pawtucket’s 9-game losing streak from May 10-19 was their longest since an 11-game losing streak in August of 2015. Shutdown – Pawtucket is 16-7 in shutout games this season – just ahead of Durham (15-3) for the most shutouts in the league. Pawtucket set a new franchise-record for Most Shutouts in a season last year with 17. Defense Tops, Pitching & Hitting Better Than Average – Pawtucket continues to lead the league with a .987 fielding pct. (making an IL low 52 errors in 3,972 total chances). Pawtucket’s Team ERA is 7th in the IL at 3.77 after being 1st from June 17-20. The PawSox are 7th in the league in Team Batting (.257) after being last for much of May and into early-June. Their .259 average on July 29 was their season-high. Rain Men – Pawtucket has suffered 10 postponements this season (6 at home and 4 on the road). The 6 home postponements are the most since they also had 6 during the 2006 season. Last year, Pawtucket had 5 rainouts at home…their most since that 2006 season. The PawSox had just one home rainout in both 2014 & 2015 and just three each in 2012 & 2013. The club-record is 11 home postponements in 1982. The month of April was the 6th rainiest on record in Pawtucket while May had 21 of 31 days with at least a trace of rain. June wasn’t much better with some rain on 19 of the 30 days. Double Dipping – The Sox have played 10 doubleheaders (three sweeps, swept four times, and three splits) including four twin bills in a 12-day span between June 7-18. The PawSox still have one more make-up doubleheader remaining on the schedule on August 15 in Louisville at 5:30 pm. Their 10 doubleheaders are tied with Rochester for the most in the league to date this season. A Nice Tune in June – The PawSox posted their first winning month of the season with a 17-14 mark in June. Pawtucket batters had their best month of the season by far hitting .275 (275-for-1001) with 30 HR…following a .231 April and .242 May. All-Star OF Bryce Brentz led the way batting .340 with 7 2B, 11 HR & 27 RBI in 27 games in June. Pitchers had a 4.10 ERA (113 ER in 248 IP) following a 3.63 ERA in April and a 3.64 ERA in May. All-Star LHP Edgar Olmos was 3-1 with a 1.04 ERA in 6 games (3 starts) in June. Pawtucket went 10-12 this April and then 12-13 in May. May Days Over – The PawSox finished 12-13 in May. Pitchers had a 3.64 ERA. The Sox hit .242 in 25 games in May with 31 HR. The PawSox suffered their only losing month all of last season in May going 14-16. The End to April – The PawSox finished 10-12 in April and thus suffered their first losing April since 2010 when they went 9-13. Until this year, April had been a terrific month for the PawSox as they finished .500 or better during each of the prior six Aprils. Pawtucket hit .231 in 22 games in April with 15 HR while Sox pitchers were 10-12 with a 3.63 last month. The PawSox outscored their opponents, 84-79 in April. 2016 was a Winner – The PawSox registered a winning season in 2016 and finished above .500 for the 5th time in the last 6 years with their 74-68 mark. They went 81-61 in 2011, 79-65 in 2012 winning the Governors’ Cup, 80-63 in 2013, and 79-65 in 2014 winning another Governors’ Cup, but 59-85 in 2015. BOSTON RED SOX DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM –
