August 2006 60 years of devoted service There are not many people who can claim to have served their community for 60 years in one particular role. At the end of June there was a celebration of this record of service by a well-known Willingham man Mr Paul Ingle. The celebration was 'next door', in Longstanton, where Paul has been the church organist for 60 years. On 25 June many friends from Willingham were in St Michael's Church for a service to celebrate with Paul. It was a great occasion, which demonstrated the respect and affection in which he is held. He was presented with a certificate of appreciation signed by the Bishop of Ely, the Rt Revd Dr Anthony Russell. Jennifer Thompson, who has taken part in many concerts with Paul, sang at the service. The parish church of Longstanton is of course All Saints', and it is there that Paul Ingle has played week by week, but as many people know the church suffered serious damage and until it is repaired is not in regular use. The fact that the service on this occasion was in St Michael's was a happy historical reminder. Many Willingham people know Paul well, and have reason to be grateful to him for teaching them or their children literally hundreds of them to play the piano. He is still teaching. And of course those who have lived for years in the village remember him also as the postman. We are delighted to offer congratulations to Paul for his remarkable achievement. August 2006

60 years of devoted service

There are not many people who can claim to have

served their community for 60 years in one particularrole. At the end of June there was a celebration of this

record of service by a well-known Willingham man —

Mr Paul Ingle. The celebration was 'next door', in Longstanton,

where Paul has been the church organist for 60 years.

He went there in 1946 to play for a service at

St Michael's Church, and agreed to do that for a

fortnight. Somehow, the fortnight became extended!

On 25 June many friends from Willingham were in

St Michael's Church for a service to celebrate with

Paul. It was a great occasion, which demonstrated the

respect and affection in which he is held. He was

presented with a certificate of appreciation signed bythe Bishop of Ely, the Rt Revd Dr Anthony Russell.

Jennifer Thompson, who has taken part in many

concerts with Paul, sang at the service.

The parish church of Longstanton is of course All

Saints', and it is there that Paul Ingle has played week

by week, but as many people know the church suffered

serious damage and until it is repaired is not in regularuse. The fact that the service on this occasion was in St

Michael's was a happy historical reminder.

Many Willingham people know Paul well, and have

reason to be grateful to him for teaching them or their

children — literally hundreds of them — to play the

piano. He is still teaching. And of course those who

have lived for years in the village remember him also

as the postman. We are delighted to offer congratulations to Paul

for his remarkable achievement.

And now a request to our readers

Do you know of other people with long records of

service to the community? If so, please let us know.

We would like to hear from you.

We are always pleased to receive contributions, and

ideas, from readers. It is YOUR magazine. Help the

team to ensure that it covers a wide range of villagenews and information, and reflects your interests.

Please let us know......

From the Parish Council

Grass-cutting in public areas

There have been a number of enquiries to

the Parish Council as to who is currentlyresponsible for cutting the various areas

of 'public' grass around the Village. So,'

"

hopefully to clarify and not confuse:—

Parish Council: The Green; Recreation Ground,'Jubilee Field (north side of the Ploughman Hall), andthe area around the Ploughman Hall; the Cemetery;the Pound; and the small green area near RamptonRoad on Pyrethrum Way.County Council: All the roadside verges, includingthe verges up to 4 feet from the kerbs (but not the

green areas) in Saxon Way.District Council: The green areas immediatelyaround any District Council housing.St Mary & All Saints Parochial ChurchCouncil: The old graveyard (ie immediately around

the church).Wimpeys (builders/developers): The greenareas in Saxon Way apart from the outer 4 ft of the

verges.Macleans (builders/developers): The greenarea further from Rampton Road in Pyrethrum Way.

Any problems should be reported to the relevantauthorities. The Clerk can provide telephone numberson request.

Overhanging hedgesFollowing on from last month's note about overhanginghedges: This is a plea to everyone whose hedge runs

alongside the road. Please would you check that a

pedestrian can get safely past your hedge without havingto go in the road — including someone pushing a child's

buggy, and anyone in a wheelchair. Can car-drivers see

past» your hedge, especially if your property is on a bendor near a side road? On the other hand, if you are a

pedestrian or a car-driver, and any hedges regularlycause you problems, let the Parish Clerk know. If any

hedge-owner persistently lets their hedge get in the wayof public road or pavement users, County Highways can

be asked to do the cutting, and send the owner the bill.

Cambridgeshire Registered Trader Scheme

Rogue traders and distraction burglaries (where a

caller pretends to be a trader or workman to gainaccess to someone's house) are a big problem in

Cambridgeshire, and older or vulnerable people are

often the targets of such people. So the

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Distraction

Burglary and Rogue Trader Task Force, together with

Age Concern, have set up a Registered Trader Scheme. This is available to anyone who is either over 60, or

who has a mental or physical disability. RingCambridgeshire Age Concern on 01354-696677 and

explain the nature of the work that needs doing. Theyhave a list of responsible home improvements traderswhom they have audited to show that they do not havea criminal record, and that they operate legally and

provide good customer service. They will put you intouch with a trader on their list who best suits your

requirements. They also provide a dispute resolution

service, in the event that any dispute arises between a

consumer and a registered trader.

Jottings from your

— but have you ever wondered What

happens to all the paper, tins, glass and- - plastics that you recycle? The old magazines, newspapers and junk mail we

collect from you are sent to UK re—processing facilities and

are made into more paper primarily for newsprint but also

into other products such as manila envelopes and

cardboard.'

Tins are separated into aluminium and steel at

licensed premises in the UK. Then they are smelted to be

used in a while range of items from more cans to washingmachines to cars and even planes and ships!

Glass is sent for re-processing to produce new

containers — so by recycling your marmite jar, you give it

the chance to be part of a champagne bottle.

Plastic bottles are sent for re-processing. A proportionof them are transformed in the UK where markets are

available. The rest is sent abroad for recycling. It is

important to highlight that there are bigger markets for

the re-processing of plastics abroad than in the UK,therefore by exporting these recyclable materials, we

satisfy a demand for materials. The plasticsare made into a wider range of items, from

clothing, such as fleece jackets, and filling for

duvets, drain pipes — and wheely bins, so that

even more waste can go for recycling. All the garden and kitchen waste produced by

householders in Cambridgeshire is sent to two local

contractors. One of them is based in Waterbeach and the

other in Ellington. They have approved licences to processeven meat, bones and dairy products. All the contents

from your garden and kitchen bin are transformed into

soil conditioner, which is used by local farmers and also

sold locally to enrich gardens and allotments.

The waste produced by Cambridgeshire residents that

is not suitable for recycling is landfilled at authorised sites

County Councillor

within the county. Unlike some other partsof the country we do not send our rubbish" _-

for landfill outside of the county. Finally,'-'

you may have seen reports of rubbish being E".sent to countries like China for disposal.'This causes me concern, but I am pleased to report that

none of the waste produced by Cambridgeshire residents

that is not suitable for recycling goes abroad.

So thank you for all you do for the environment — and

please keep up the good work.

I am always available for consultation, either in

Accident and emergencyThere are many situations when it is

entirely appropriate that people should

be taken directly to a casualtydepartment. This is clearly the case

with urgent and life threateningsituations or following serious

accidents. However we see from the

hospital discharge letters that some

people are attending accident and

emergency departments with more minor and less

urgent problems. This can obviously lead to longdelays for everyone.

We would simply like to remind people that we in

the surgery are always happy to be consulted before an

attendance at A & E and can give appropriate advice.

We can provide dressings here and do stitching of

small wounds and if x—ray is required we can often

arrange for you to go directly to x—ray rather than wait

in an A & E department. Similarly, out of surgery

opening times, CAMDOC is always available and

would also be happy to give advice as to whether a tripto A & E is needed. They can be contacted on 01223

464242 and nurses are available to give advice or

arrange for you to see a doctor.

big thank you to Mrs Anne Greavett who has worked

extremely hard over the last few years raising moneyfor the Surgery Equipment Fund by organising weeklyBingo sessions. She has again presented us with a very

generous amount and we have just purchased, a new

syringe driver for use in the community. Syringedrivers help to alleviate pain in patients being nursedat home. They are expensive items of equipment andwe are extremely grateful for the help and support Mrs

Greavett and her bingo players have given us over the

years to help buy equipment like this. Anne is sorrythat due to ill health she will be unable to continuewith her Bingo sessions.

This hilarious farce follows the antics of the four

redoubtable ladies of The Farndale Avenue

Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild as theyattempt to present 'Murder at Checkmate

Manor'. This ambitious and cunning AgathaChristie-style 19305 drawing room murder mystery

requires them to play all 14 roles (aided by their

stage manager Gordon) with hysterical results.

As well as performing the play, the ladies also

present a Film and Fashion Show and a Murder

Mystery Quiz complete with prize! If it can go

wrong it probably will.... but surely it will be all

right on the night? This riotously funny show

will have you in stitches and is suitable for all the

family- a real holiday treat!
