The Transfiguration
In this week’s Gospel, we read about the Transfiguration of Our Lord. Jesus brings Peter, James, and John
up a mountain to pray. While Jesus is praying, He is transformed in majestic glory and God’s voice from a
cloud says, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to him.”
Pope John Paul II included this Gospel story as the fourth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary. If you have
experience saying the Rosary, you know that many of the printed or online meditation guides tell you what
the fruit of each mystery is (this is what you hope to gain or learn by thinking about this mystery while you
pray). Our Rosary mediation guide says that the fruit of this mystery is “Desire for Holiness.” Sure, that
sounds like a good thing to desire, but how do we live that out in our everyday, busy lives? How do ordinary
people squeeze the desire for holiness into their day between work, kids, and chores? The simple answer is
that you don’t! No need to make extra time for it, you do it WHILE you are doing all the rest.
St. Thomas Aquinas taught us that to love is to “will the good of the other.” In our roles as husbands,
wives, mothers and fathers, we are frequently asked to yield our will for the good of the others God has
entrusted to our care. St Theresa of Calcutta, paraphrasing St. Therese the Little Flower, said, “Not all of us
can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” So, all of our work, whether outside or inside
the home, can be taking us one step closer to holiness if we do it with great love! We love and serve God by
loving and serving one another (our spouse, children, co-workers, strangers).
Let’s go back to the part of today’s Gospel where God tells us to listen to Jesus. What are some ways we
can listen to Jesus in married life? Make time for Him by getting up a few minutes before the kids to pray,
going to Mass as a family, praying grace before meals, asking for and giving forgiveness, doing something
nice for your spouse. Whether your marriage is happy or struggling, don’t forget to pray specifically for your
marriage and vocation. The sacramental grace of marriage can carry a couple through the difficult times that
we all face along the way. “Yes, dear,” and “I’m sorry,” and helping with the dishes are good too!
To summarize, love will help us grow in holiness. Since Fr. Dave isn’t here, how about a song in his honor?
“All You Need is Love” by the Beatles!
In Christ,
Bob and Jen Brogan

COMMUNITY GARDEN UPDATE
“For I was hungry and you fed me…” - Mat-thew 25:35
“If you can’t feed one hundred people then feed just one” - Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta
A little over two months ago, a group of vol-unteers got together to continue and expand the beginnings of the St. Martha Community Garden. The purpose of the garden is a simple one - to provide food to those in need. Our goals for this year were realistic – any harvest is a success! While it would be amazing to be able to provide fresh produce to everyone in our area who is in need, it is a blessing to be able to feed as many as we can.
Our first endeavor was to plant sunflower seeds in the same area where they were last year on the Herbertsville Road side of the church. Over the next several weeks we tilled, raked, shoveled and planted – tomatoes, pep-pers, eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers and sweet potatoes. More recently our time has been spent weeding, watering and weeding some more.
Two weeks ago, we harvested our first zuc-chini and on the morning of this writing I deliv-ered our first donation to St. Gregory’s Pantry – approximately nine pounds of cucumbers and squash. We expect to have much more to do-nate throughout the summer.
In August, we will be building two raised beds and planting some cool weather crops. If you’d like to help out, now is a great time to jump in. For more information, contact Kirstie at 732-295-3630 ext 39 or [email protected]. And if you haven’t already, take a walk out to the gar-den, enjoy the sunflowers and see how things are growing out there.
