On 15th August morning, Oliver Burrows went to Metro Medical, off Waterfield road to purchase some medicines, prescribed by his doctor. Little did he know what was in store for him, that could be just the tip of an iceberg. The MRP of the medical product is Rs 240, whereas he was charged Rs 460 as per their shop label sticker. The shop concerned is Metro Med- ical, 9A / 9C, Rizvi Mahal, which is opposite Bhabha Hospital, just off Waterfield Road, Bandra West. "I’m sure this medical store must be cheating many people – and I was one of their victims on In- dependence Day 2014, at around 9am. " When he went home with the medicines, he checked the MRP and compared the price charged as per the shop sticker, he felt cheated. He went back to Metro Medical and showed him the difference in prices (almost double). The chemist arrogantly told him “Do what you want”. The medicine concerned was ‘Seroflo Rotacaps 250 inhaler’ – a Cipla product. The shop sticker had a bar code – and looked very genuine (to fool the unwary customer) with the price marked as Rs 460/- When, Oliver confronted him, he offered a refund. I refused, telling him that this modus operandi must have been used on multiple customers – especially those who are not educated. Poor people are being fleeced of their hard earned money, by unscrupulous medical store owners. They unknowingly pay what is on the bill. I am sure that with this loot money, he has bought a second shop in the same building. >> CONTD. Angel Xpress Foundation is a Mumbai-based (registered,12 A and 80G certified) ngo working towards the better-ment of underprivileged children from slums. AXF be-lieves every child deserves an opportunity to find her/histrue potential; which can be attained by mentoring fromwell-educated and fortunate adults from their own vicin-ity.

AXF is currently armed with 100+ volunteers whoteach almost 700 children in 5 centers operated out ofpublic parks and promenades in Bandra-W, Santacruz-W,JVPD Scheme, Lokhandwala and Andheri-E. Addition-ally, nearly 2000 students in BMC schools benefit fromAXF’s In-School English Program.

While most of the AXF volunteers are stay-at-homemothers and active senior citizens, there are a large num-ber of youth from schools and colleges, who are also get-ting involved. A good number of donors approach AXFcenters to reach out their generosity towards deprivedchildren of our city with money, goodies and pampering.

How did it all start? While on a sabbatical from her corporate job, AnubhaSharma decided to volunteer at a street school. Sheposted a Facebook request for clothes and stationery towhich she received a shocking 3000+ responses within aweek from willing contributors. She realised that fortu-nate folk have the desire to give, provided they find a legitplatform for the same. Anubha joined hands with BeenaaAdvani, (one of the first respondents) to contribute to thecause and thus, AXF was born. “Our main focus is on thegiver. We want to create efficiency in society by utilisingthe otherwise redundant resources and desire to give”,says Anubha.

What can you do with AXF/Can you also set up anAXF center?A volunteer at AXF, Manish Shah said, “A lot of our pro-fessional lives are spent trying to solve problems that arepale in comparison to what's been undertaken here. It'sa privilege to be a part of this initiative.”

All you need is• A park/promenade with a shade: located close to a slumas well as an affluent neighbourhood.• Volunteers: Just 12 to 15 adults who can spare 2 to 3hours / week to teach English, Math, Values, Art, Craft, etc. • Donors: for snack duty, collection of reusable goods (ingood condition) sponsoring a child, sponsoring excur-sions, and celebrating special occasions (with treats). • Or sign up with an existing AXF center if one exists closeto your neighbourhood.• Call Anubha/Beenaa at 9930070086 / 9820244562 ormail [email protected]

THE AXF INFLUENCEAXF often receives children growing up in harsh condi-tions. The show of affection, care and nurturing alongwith some laughs and jokes that float around in the midstof all that learning, is almost therapeutic for them. • Kajal, a once aggressive child, witnesses constant do-mestic violence. With constant grooming, interactions, counselling & mentoring by “Shivani Teacher”, the classbully has now transformed into a center leader who cansingle-handedly maintain decorum in 70 children. • In a little over a year, girls in “Sonali Teacher’s” class atSantacruz are expressing a desire to become well-edu-cated professionals, rather than marrying at an early age;with bearing and raising children the only purpose of life.• Children at the Santacruz center dote on their “PramodSir”, the once-shy Kiran constantly scared from the beat-ings at home, looks forward to a few laughs in the class.

An appeal to support Free BusServices during Bandra Fair from Bandra station to Mount Mary Church to Senior Citizens

All festivals are man made, to celebratean aspect of a particular Religion orCommunity. Being a Secular Nation wemust all learn to respect each other.

Over the years we have lost out onthe very essence of all our religious fes-tivals and feasts. The major reason forthis, is the involvement of a very sinis-ter nexus of political & commercialgroups in these festivals. May it be Ban-dra Fair, Ganesh Utsav, Eid, Navratri,Diwali etc. To a great extent they haveall lost it's good old charm. Today it's alla ground for commercial exploitation, which is backed by political propa-ganda. Why do we get to see the cityflooded with political posters during allour religious festivals? Most of theseposters are with the faces of politicianswho have no genuine connect with theoccasions whatsoever. Why are all sortsof rules broken in the name of holy fes-tivals? This is openly done so with theunholy blessings of politicians? There isonly one answer to this my friends."Vote Bank Politics".....

We as Bandraites would love to visitBandra Fair & see posters with the his-tory of our Mount Mary Church & revertto the past glory of the fair, minus thecommercial & civic chaos. We would alllike to partake in Ganesh Utsav & Navra-

tri where we see posters depicting theteachings from the Holy Gita, minus theloud music and traffic jams. We wouldlove to participate in the festivities ofRamzan & Eid where there are posterswith messages of peace from the HolyQuran, minus the loud speakers & roadblocks. We would love to celebrate Di-wali where messages of prosperity & joyare spread, minus the noise & air pollu-tion from crackers.

Let us not fall for this trap of Com-munal friction. That is exactly the rootof this very cheap Vote Bank Politics. This is practiced all across India & by allpolitical parties. We as ALM membersshould rise above all of this & respect &honour each other. It's time we all learnto take pride & call ourselves Indiansfirst and hold the rule of law above all, only then shall we gain respect for ourindividual Religions & Communities.

There is a solution to each and everyissue & the answers lie within us in find-ing a balance. Let us all find that bal-ance and in doing so we can avoidfalling into this devious trap of Commu-nal divide. So lets all get back to resolv-ing the issues plaguing our Society, rather than argue and fight amongstourselves.

BJP BETRAYING OUR TRUSTThe Modi government before it came topower made loud noises about auster-ity. When they took charge in Delhi, they have betrayed 1.2 billion people ofour country, by changing their track &asking for privileges for their membersof parliament (MP) at airports and inprivate airlines - that includes seats ofchoice, free parking tickets, reservedlounge facilities and on the spot ticketconfirmation.

While the common man strugglesby standing in long queues and payingexorbitant parking fees, these shame-less politicians have a free run.

They consider the 1.2 billion peopleof the country their servants, ratherthan they being the servant of the peo-ple. I strongly feel that in the name ofspecial privileges, our MP's under theModi government are looting the pub-lic and tax payer’s money, for their self-ish personal gain. They are soshameful, that they do not care orbother for the common people. In theUK & US, their Prime Minister travels inthe local train & President stands in aqueue and has strong link with com-mon people. It is high time the monop-oly of the 800 MP's and their privilegesmust stop, which is nothing but be-trayal of faith of the people, after thegeneral elections.

The urgent need of the hour is thatthe Modi government must stop thisselfish poltical stunt & give maximumprivilege to the people, rather thantalking about “good days” which hasproved that it is ‘good days’ for our MP's- & not the common people of the coun-try.

Bhagwan Thadani

Hon’ble PM Modi ji, are you not con-cerned when the cost of tomatoes is Rs80 per kilo… and rising higher? Peoplehave already started to clamour:“Hamare Purane Din Le Aao”

GOVINDA PYRAMIDSWith serious injuries and death due tofalling from the Govinda pyramidsevery year, I welcome the order of theBombay High Court to ban the partici-pation of the boys & girls under 18 yearsof age in dahi handi celebrations,

which has become political and com-mercial. It has been observed that theGovinda in the city have become day byday more commercial, with all groupswanting to make money, by risking thelives of the small children on the top, while breaking the handi in the nameof Indian culture - and taking advan-tage of the situation to the maximumextent.

With this directive, the BombayHigh Court have saved the lives ofthousands of small innocent children, who are not fit for such type of danger-ous sports, played by the selfish peoplefor their selfish personal and politicalgain.

BANDRA FAIRYear after year, the Bandra Fair is underattack. Yet again, this year Lillian Paisis sowing the seeds of discontent. Westand by Mount Mary Church & theBandra Fair with all our might. Let notpeople having vested interest, try tostop the 300 year old traditional Ban-dra Fair.

Some traditions are fun to continue, even if it's lost its essence. Today, theBandra Fair is no longer what it waswhen we were kids - it's gone commer-cial. Yet I would advocate its continu-ance.

All that I want is that the mela (BandraFair) should go on. However, it shouldbe either re-located to a spot wherepeople are not inconvenienced. Wewant a quieter and cleaner place to stayduring the Fair.

Daryll D’Souza

Last year, BIPA along with the other or-ganisations protested and got the gatefor Mount Mary opened from the Ce-ment Road, touching Shah Rukh’splace. The actor does not have a prob-lem with people using the road, but thepoliticians are trying their tricks, sothat we go and beg in front of them.Corrupt police and the BMC too crossesthe line, way too often. We know that if they are not with us -they are against us. Now, the BJP isbrought to power here. So, it is time toput them to the test. The coming MLAelections are near – and we know whatto do.

SEE THE WRITINGON THE WALL

Dear Reader,

The Festive season starts… now! WithParsi New Year, Ganesh Chaturthi andmany more festive days in the comingmonths; we are at the threshold of creatingcommunity connect in our cosmopolitansuburb – we call Bandra. This festive fer-vour is what makes Bandra a ‘Mini India’.And, this is what national integration is allabout. And, this is what national integra-tion is all about. People from different re-gions, living peacefully in harmony.

But things are not all that rosy here.Bandra’s underbelly is frightful. Illegalstructures, sprawling slums, vested inter-ests & hidden agendas are part of the sce-nario. However, with a high level ofactivism that rivals most other suburbs;Bandraites always stand up for their rights– and see that justice prevails. Even aslocal politicians play the ‘divide-and-rule’game - to break up rival groups; people aremuch more smarter today, to see throughtheir devilish plans.

Bandra Buzz will always be your sourceof un-biased local news, as we do not (andwill not) have any affiliation to any politi-cal parties or ideologies. All are welcometo highlight their achievements, eventsand views. In this way, our dear readerswill have a clear picture when deciding tovote at the Assembly Elections, due in acouple of months. This time, make an in-formed decision. And, why not ? Yourelected representative (read… next MLA)should be responsive to your needs – so,see the writing on the wall.

As the Bandra Fair issues evolve to acrescendo in mid-September, let us re-member – that tweaks to resolve recentproblems (security, fire hazard, crowd con-trol, etc.) can give a new lease of life to thesocial festivities & a devotion that are over300 years old – and unique to Bandra. Pil-grims come from distant places – and needrefreshments and rest. This is primarilythe job of the BMC & the Police – who needto co-operate with the collective wisdomof locals. People who support interferenceby vested interest groups should be boy-cotted – and made to pay for their mis-deeds.

Warm Regards,Merck N. D’SilvaEditor-in-Chief98207 83616

Altina Securities has been playing a major role in thefield of Investor Education and Awareness Pro-gramme for the last 30 odd years, through invest-

ment seminars, as well as workshops. Mr. Clifton DeSilva is the Director at Altina Securities

Pvt. Ltd., a company engaged in the activities of stockbroking as a member of the National Stock Exchange,Wealth Management & Equity Research.

The company has conducted as well as participated inseveral investment seminars & workshops both at the na-tional and international levels. The other mode is the printmedia through which article views on investments are ad-dressed in leading investment publications. To get an in-sight, into what this is all about; we interviewed Mr.Clifton DeSilva – and he had forthright answers to all ourquestions.

In your Investor Education and Awareness programs, why do you have special emphasis on equities? In the Investor Education and Awareness programmesconducted by us, we focus on all asset classes - but thespecial emphasis is on equities, because as an asset class,it outperforms over a longer period of time.

The equity cult in India is still at a nascent stage & re-quires development. Therefore, our endeavor is to developthe equity cult; where (if investments are made on well re-

searched and informed based decisions) the rewardscould be enormous.

Can you substantiate your statements? There are a host of instances to prove that equities as anasset class outperforms all other asset in the long run.

The stock of ‘Wipro’ is a classic example - an invest-ment of Rs 10,000 in the year 1980 in the stock of Wipro istoday valued at approx. Rs. 540 crores, without taking intoconsideration dividend payouts. If the dividend payoutsare considered the returns scale higher. Also, an invest-ment of Rs 25,000 in the year 1978, in the stock of ColgatePalmolive in 1978 is worth Rs 3 crores today. In fact, theannual dividend received on the investments of Rs 25,000is Rs 7.88 lakhs, which is tax free.

These are just two examples, but there are severalother stocks; that have provided huge returns to stake-holders.

What are the comparable returns in other assetclasses? An investment of Rs 11,500 in silver, in the year 2004 isvalued at Rs 40,000 today - an increase of 3.5 times, overa period of 10 years. An investment of Rs 5,850 in gold, inthe year 2004 is valued at Rs 27,000 today - an increase of4.5 times over a period of 10 years.

An investment of Rs 100 in 1980 in the BSE Sensex isvalued at over Rs 26,000 today, an increase of 25 times.

How are these investor education and awareness pro-grams conducted? As stated earlier, over the last 30 years we have been veryactive in conducting investor education and awarenessprograms. These programs are in the form of workshops, seminars, articles and interviews in leading investmentpublications; as well as industrial tours to different partsof the country, to visit the facilities of successful compa-nies. To our credit, we have organized over 1000 invest-ment seminars/workshops. We have also participated inseminars on investments abroad. All these investment ed-ucation and awareness programs have been conducted aspart of corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs –and are conducted free of cost to the participants.

What has been the response to these programs? All the initiatives on investor education and awarenessprogram by us have received overwhelming response -and our efforts have been recognized, through severalawards received by us. Recently, Capital Finance Interna-tional London nominated us for the best investor educa-tion program in India - 2013.

What are your future plans? We will continue to conduct investor awareness educa-tion programs on a regular basis, with special emphasison equities - as we strongly believe that the surest way ofcreating enormous wealth is by investing in great compa-nies with high potential. There is a myth amongst manyinvestors, that equities are high risk investments. Itshould be noted that when you invest in equities you arebuying part of an actual business. The stock is represen-tative of a real enterprise. It is not about playing the mar-ket, but about buying businesses. The right businesswhich will prosper over a period of time but by the sametoken selection of the wrong business could prove a dis-aster. Invest in the business and not in the price.

HDFC Bank started with 1 branch and if an investor in-vested in the stock at that time he would be a part ownerof one branch. Today HDFC Bank is over 1500 branches tothe investor is now the part owner of a bank of over 1500branches without investing any further amounts.

Similarly, Maruti started with 1 lakh vehicles. Today, ithas a capacity of over 15 lakh vehicles. Investments ingrowing companies can create enormous wealth.”

Recently, Capital Finance International has recog-nized the efforts of the company in the field of InvestorEducation and Awareness Programmes - and has nomi-nated Altina Securities for the Best Investor EducationProgramme in India – 2013.

AUGUST 201406 EAT OUTBANDRABUZZ.COM

Another food joint opens in Bandra. Butthis is a food joint with a difference. TheCentral Kitchen is a well-developed con-cept in the Sion-Dadar-BKC belt, and hasnow honored Bandraites with its presence.

The Kitchen Express delivers tradi-tional Moghlai and Awadhi cuisine, Thaicurries, Lebanese delicacies, Continentalcuisine, and sweets for the sweet.

Owned by the young and dynamicTejinder Singh, the outlet caters to thetaste-conscious as well as the health-con-scious. I tried their baked pav-wada servedwith tangy and spicy chutney. At just Rs.15,it's a jumbo sized pav-wada, the best part

being it is totally oil-free & yet as tasty asany pav-wada you may ever have tried.Tejinder assures that even gulping downthree or four of these jumbos leave youfeeling light & having space left for more. The menu also includes other baked fooditems, but the nothing beats vada-pav.

Another specialty on the menu is veg &chicken square cuts, resembling a stuffedparatha, Very tasty, very filling.

The Central kitchen is also known forits freshly prepared wraps & rolls, both veg& non-veg. The uniqueness of the wrapsand rolls lies in the fact that they arefreshly made, authentic Indian style, but

served with a fusion of internationalsauces.

Another item on the menu worth or-dering is the Dum Biryanis, which I per-sonally would rate higher than the onesfrom Hyderabad. Roomali rotis are alsoavailable, something which I find oftenmissing on the menus of many otherMoghlai restaurants, so that's another pluspoint.

Satinder Pal Singh is a distinguished busi-nessman in the shipping industry, who hasrecently been appointed to represent theRepublic of Georgia, East Europe in Maha-rashtra.

Bandra Buzz interviewed Satinder tolet locals know about new business oppor-tunities, for those who are willing to workat new destinations and horizons.

Could you tell us something aboutyourself?I had come to Bombay in 1956, as a small10 year old child. I have been living in Ban-

dra for over 50 years, so I am more of aBandra boy. I started my business with myelder brother in 1964. Today, with a lot ofhard work and self made initiatives, I havereached the level of being one of the mosteminent businessmen in Mumbai.

In our community (Sikh), we have veryfew people who are in ship repair business– and we are one of them. Most of them arein the automobile industry. Today we havebeen very successful in promoting ourbusiness, with the goodwill of our clientsin Maharashtra and all over India.

What is your role as the newly ap-pointed Honorary Consul of Georgia inMumbai?I have been appointed by the Republic ofGeorgia as their Hon. Consul General inMumbai – and more specifically Mumbai.Basically, this is to promote trade, good-will, culture, etc. between our two coun-tries – i.e. India and Georgia.

We have lots of things that we can dofrom India to Georgia like promotingtourism, culture and lots of industrial en-trepreneurship, which Georgia requires, asit is a very upcoming and developing East-ern European country.

India has a great potential to do busi-ness with Georgia. It would be a great op-portunity for young entrepreneurs to take

advantage of the present situation. I wishto promote a lot of goodwill between thesetwo countries, especially all the goodthings that India can offer, like agriculturalproducts, industrial products – and ourgreat heritage of culture, which we wouldlike to take to Georgia. Especially themovie business, which can help promote alot of tourism to Georgia – wherein theywill benefit. This is my main aim – and Ihope to take this a long way for India andGeorgia – to sign a lot of trade agreementsthat will help the progress of both coun-tries. Today Georgia is the 4th non-corruptcountry in the world – which is a very bigachievement. They have a lot of resources, like iron ore for steel & natural agriculturalproducts, which they can offer India. Wecan help set up a lot of food processingunits, which can give a great impetus to In-dian entrepreneurs.

How is your appointment as going tohelp or assist local communities ofBandra-Khar-SantaCruz?Being a Bandraite, it is my foremost out-look that I promote a lot of entrepreneursfrom Bandra, to have business ties withGeorgia. I plan to promote this through theRotary Club or the other available clubs, who will co-operate. We could give themall the inside outlook of what Georgia has

to offer. As I am available right here in San-taCruz, I would like to give the best oppor-tunities to ‘my own’ – i.e. people fromBandra.

It was nice to know about your intent tooutreach to Bandra – but, through thisinterview, would you like to convey anyspecific message to the people of Ban-dra Khar SantaCruz?Staying in Bandra almost my whole life, Ifind that is one of the best suburbs, wherewe have very good people residing here. The population is cosmopolitan, who be-lieve in good human values. In the last 30years, the evolving infrastructure hashelped to maintain the status of ‘Queen ofthe Suburbs’. This is a very important as-pect. Most Bandraites are great entrepre-neurs, as the business atmosphere isconducive. The local entrepreneurs arevery prominent people, who are in busi-ness for many decades – creating a lot ofgoodwill. Here, various groups uplift com-munity values.

I am looking forward that Bandrashould take the lead – and be a ‘model’ tothe surrounding suburbs of Mumbai.

Our family life is really a cause of con-cern. Everyone is busy with their ownlives, each one does their own thingseven when we are at home and we justdon't seem to get together as a familyanymore. Can Feng Shui help?

Mr. Larry GomesYes, to broadly begin with, I suggest thatyou find the southwest sector of your liv-ing room, as this is where family relation-ships are located. Indeed, all indicators ofyour relationships are found in the SW ofthe home. Place a beautifully framed fam-ily portrait in the living area or alterna-tively hang a round faceted crystal in theSW of the living room to fill the room withrainbow colours. This will help the family. Also you may want to consider getting thepersonalised Feng Shui analysis for yourfamily. Feng Shui can enhance your liveswith these accurate, personalized, com-prehensive, reliable and easy to under-stand Feng Shui reports. This can be veryimportant for you to apply the art of FengShui effectively to enhance success inyour life, improve your health, wealth andfeel more at ease in your relationshipsand surroundings.

My bedroom is above our building carpark where cars are parked. Is this badFeng Shui? What can I do to change it?

Mrs. Smita GadgilPlace a small mirror on the ceiling of yourgarage so that it reflects the garage floor. This symbolically places your bedroom onthe ground level.

Does it really matter which side of thebed we sleep on as a couple?

Mrs. Veena GuptaYes. The woman should sleep on the rightside (as you lie in bed), and the manshould sleep on the left. You should alsotry to orient the bed or sleep with yourhead pointing in one of your fourfavourable direction based on your KWAnumber; most preferable the TIEN YI orThe YIN NIEN direction.

Q & A with Maria HussainFeng Shui Chat

After Arnav received his fifth rejection let-ter, he realized that something was seri-ously wrong. He was well qualified for thejobs, had his credentials in place too. Sowhat was really coming in the way of himand his dream job? Discussions with closefriends and a lot of introspection madehim realize that there was a lapse in theway he presented himself during inter-views.

“In life, you never get a second chanceto make a first impression.” Clichéd as itmay sound, this is indeed, the truth. Weform impressions about people, in thefirst few seconds of having met them. These are subconscious judgments thatwe form, based on their appearance, bodylanguage, grooming, etiquette and com-munication.

Since we do not know them, we lookfor cues that would help us to understandthem better. Once we form an opinion, wetry hard to validate it, by looking for otherclues that will help us reinforce our be-liefs.

Arnav realized that although he waswell qualified, his lazy demeanor and ex-

tremely casual clothing made him lookless credible and not suitable for the jobs.

The need of the hour therefore, is‘Image Management’. This industry, al-

though yet in its infancy is gaining mo-mentum in our country. Contrary to pop-ular belief, Image Management is notabout glamour or fashion. It is about con-

veying the ‘right message’. It is aboutbeing and looking ‘appropriate’ for therole one is in. Yet it does entail being some-thing you are not. It is not being ‘fake’ butbeing ‘aware’.

It involves playing up your strengthsand achieving success in your personaland professional life.

As they always say, the only constantin life is ‘Change’. Let’s therefore put ourbest foot forward, and create a winningimage.
