Pilgrimage Opportunity Msgr. John Urell, pastor of St. Timothy, and Charlene Dumitru, Director of Adult Faith Formation at St. Norbert, will co‐direct a pilgrimage to significant locations mentioned in the writings of St. Paul, the Book of Revelation and early church history located in Turkey. This country, known as Asia Minor to St. Paul, is home to many of the earliest church communities founded by St. Paul, to the first eight Church Councils, and many of the early Fathers of the Church such as Sts. Polycarp, Iranaeus, 

Basil, Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory of Nazianzen. The interior of Turkey, Cappadocia, is also a place of fascinating geological formations unlike any others on earth.

Weekly Parish Offering Thank you for your continuing support of St. Norbert Parish. For the fiscal year July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015, our parish budget calls for $27,900 to be donated weekly at the Sunday collection. The collection for Sunday, August 24, was $27,017.05. These collections are not only for operating expenses each week, but also for any ongoing repair work, upgrades, etc. to our parish facility. Your regular donations are needed for the good of St. Norbert Parish and the spread of the Gospel.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Romans 12:1‐2

Mindful of God The world wants your mind. Advertisers want your business. Companies want your allegiance. Ball teams want your loyalty. Designers want you wearing their clothes. Car dealers want you driving their vehicles. Hollywood wants you to be promiscuous. Politicians convince you they will make you happier and wealthier. The world wants your mind. 

The Christian message battles hard against the influences of this world. Love for one’s neighbor means sharing with those who have less. The doctrine of forgiveness means making peace with enemies. The call to prayer means Sundays are for worship. It is a hard message to sell in a world that wants your mind. 

St. Paul tells the Romans, “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God.” 

If we are to detach ourselves from the temptations of this world, we must attach ourselves to the will of God. We discern the will of God by the renewal of our minds.

How can you do that? How can you find strength to be loyal to God above the lures of the world? God will help you in mercy, but God asks for something in return: the sacrifice of your very selves, the willingness to please God by your actions. God wants your mind too.

Feeding the Needy on the Fifth  This week’s second collection will be for Christian Service Ministry’s outreach to the poor in our community. We are grateful to St. Norbert parishioners for their love, compassion and support of those in need. 

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is Back! Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass will resume on September 7. All children in grades 1‐4 are invited to be dismissed before the readings. In the Library, the children listen to the Sunday readings followed by a discussion of the Gospel from a “kid’s point of view.” The children return to the assembly in time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

SRE Registration 2014-2015 The deadline for registration for 2014‐2015 Faith Formation classes (PK through 6th grade) is this Sunday, August 31.  

Baptized children in grades Pre‐K through 6 who have not yet received the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist should register for sacramental preparation through the School of Religious Education. Unbaptized children prepare for these sacraments, plus Baptism, through the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) program for children.

R.C.I.A. This Thursday, September 4, our topic will be an Introduction to the Old Testament. The following week, we will present an Introduction to the New Testament. 

Anyone interested in beginning the process of becoming Catholic, or with questions about Catholic belief, is invited to come any Thursday at 7:30 p.m. to our Inquiry sessions. Inquiry is an open‐ended small group discussion format designed to respond to questions or to begin a person’s faith journey toward Catholic sacraments. Topics are determined by the interests expressed in the group.  _______________________________________________________________________    

A Study of World Religions Our summer course on comparative religions will continue on Wednesday evening, September 3, at 7:30 in the Ministry Center Library. The topics this week will be The Human Predicament and The Problem of Sin and Forgetfulness. The course will continue through the end of September. This should be of interest to anyone who is curious about other cultures, and how people of other religious traditions understand God.  _______________________________________________________________________    

Bible Studies Monday Mornings: Beginning on September 8, we will offer a 24‐week overview of the whole Bible, developed by Ascension Press, and presented on video by Jeff Cavins. A very thorough workbook containing background material, charts, maps, and discussion questions will be available to participants for $45.00. To reserve your place in the class and enable us to purchase enough workbooks, please call Mary at (714) 709‐3768, Kathleen at (714)514‐8923, or the Office of Adult Faith Formation at (714) 637‐4360. 

Tuesday Evenings: Beginning September 16, we will offer an 8‐week Beginners Introduction to the Bible. This class is best for those wanting to get started reading Scripture who have not participated in a Bible Study group previously. We will talk about how to read and interpret the scriptures, how to locate texts in the Bible, and the meanings of the stories found throughout the scriptures. This group will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. There are no costs associated with this study. 

Continue to watch the bulletin for information on an Old Testament Bible Study on Wednesday evenings beginning in October for those who have done some Bible Study previously.  _______________________________________________________________________    

Wondering Why Jeremiah speaks to us in today’s first reading, and he does not seem to be very happy with his life at the moment. He accuses God of tricking him. The Hebrew word is closer in meaning to “seduced” than it is to “duped” which is given in our English translation. God called Jeremiah to be a Prophet when he was very young. In fact, in the first few verses of the Book of Jeremiah, we can read of God’s call to Jeremiah, and Jeremiah’s initial response, that he was too young and did not know how to speak.

God’s call as to why they are just not the right person for the job. Moses was wanted for murder in Egypt, and he suffered from a speech impediment and a lack of self‐confidence when God asked him to return to Egypt and convince the Pharaoh to free the Hebrew people from slavery. When God calls Isaiah, his response is that he is much too sinful to be a prophet for God. Amos says that he is only a lowly shepherd and tree trimmer, a manual laborer. He is not born to a class high enough to be a spokesperson for God. Hosea has domestic problems with an unfaithful wife, and yet God calls him too, to be a prophet. Jonah tries to run away, Ezekiel appears to be frightened out of his wits, and John the Baptist has some socially questionable behaviors that cause him to appear quite odd. 

So, why does God choose such unlikely people?  Surely, there must have been pious, holy men, well educated, from esteemed and stable families with a solid professional work history, and great rhetorical skills that God could have chosen, people who would not have been, well, quite so odd, quite so broken, quite so sinful, quite so inexperienced. But God looks past all the qualities that humans might consider, and sees instead the fire that burns in their hearts. The fire that is the presence of God himself dwelling in them. God recognizes and calls his prophets because of their passion for truth, for justice, for faith. The weaknesses that Moses, Jeremiah, Isaiah, and the others thought would impede them were unimportant to God. He could give them the qualities they needed to overcome the disabilities or weaknesses of their own character. As St. Paul would much later write regarding his own call to be an apostle, “but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me.” (II Cor 12:9)  

Jeremiah was ridiculed, persecuted, reviled and sometimes imprisoned for speaking as God told him to speak. This is why Jeremiah says that God had seduced him. God had called him to be a prophet, promised him the necessary graces, and now his life was a disaster. Yet, looking deeper into himself, Jeremiah recognizes that it cannot be any other way. At the end of today’s reading, when Jeremiah tries to ignore his call to prophecy, he says “but then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in. I cannot endure it.” The power of God’s truth is so great in Jeremiah that he burns with it, he cannot ignore his call. That same fire that God recognized in Jeremiah in his youth still compels Jeremiah to speak out in truth and justice. 

We might reflect upon Jeremiah and the other prophets and discern the ways in which each of us has heard God’s call to serve. We might think about what our excuses have been, what we think makes us unworthy to be a spokesperson for God. We might see the difficulties in our own lives as obstacles. But, in the example of Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and St. Paul, we may also see God’s strength in our weakness and allow the power of Christ to dwell within us.

Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios Los profetas frecuentemente hablaban sin rodeos, ya sea al dirigirse al pueblo o al mismo Dios. Consideremos hoy a Jeremías. Éste acusa a Dios de seducirlo, vencerlo y hacerlo pronunciar una palabra que le trajo insulto y persecución; ¡hasta lo arrojaron en un pozo para que muriera debido a lo que predicaba! Jeremías confiesa que no tiene otra opción, ya que cuando se niega a hablar la palabra de Dios experimenta un fuego ardiente en su corazón, que le consume hasta los mismos huesos.  

El costo de acercarnos al Dios vivo nos pudiera llevar por un camino que no queramos tomar. Pedro vio esto venir cuando Jesús comenzó a hablar del sufrimiento que se avecinaba en vez de ser el Mesías poderoso que el pueblo había estado esperando, que vencería al enemigo y le restauraría a Israel los días gloriosos del rey David. En vez, Jesús habló de tomar la cruz, de perder la propia vida o, en las palabras de Pablo a los romanos, de ofrecerse “como sacrificio vivo, santo y agradable a Dios”.  

El plan de Dios para nosotros es la transformación y renovación de nuestras mentes según el modelo de su Hijo Jesús. Esta transformación se da cuando nos ofrecemos “como sacrificio vivo” buscando discernir la voluntad de Dios y cumplirla tal como lo hizo Jesús. Ese ofrecimiento propio puede llevarnos a seguir el camino de Jesús: encontrar la vida al perderla por los demás, y llegar a conocer al Dios vivo como un fuego purificador, un manantial de agua viva y el alimento para nuestro espíritu.

Catecismo en Español El tiempo vuela y el día de regreso a clases está cerca. Demos gracias a Dios porque nos permitió darles tiempo de calidad a nuestros niños y por el verano tan hermoso que nos ha regalado, piensen siempre que Dios nunca nos regala cosas usadas, todo es nuevo,  así es como debemos vivirlo y disfrutarlo.   

El 6 de septiembre a las 9:30 a.m. daremos inicio a nuestro programa de Formación en la Fe‐Catecismo, nos reuniremos en el salón del Centro Familiar y Juvenil (gimnasio), cerca de las canchas de básquetbol, favor de planear su mañana, ya que es importante que les demos a nuestros niños el respeto, la atención y dedicación que ellos necesitan. Démosles calidad de tiempo, no lo que nos sobra.   Favor de comunicarse con la oficina si tienen alguna pregunta al respecto (714) 637‐4360 x105 o106. Recuerden papás que ustedes son los primeros catequistas de sus niños y nosotros somos sus asistentes en esta herencia y jornada de fe que dejaremos a nuestros futuros cristianos.  

Misión Anual de Recursos El fin de semana de Septiembre 6 y 7, se llevará a cabo la colecta anual para apoyar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas de la República del Congo, África. El Padre Rafael Okitafumba, de la Diócesis de Tshumbe, estará en todas las Misas hablando acerca de cómo nuestro apoyo ayuda a su comunidad. Los sobres estarán disponibles en las bancas y en el vestíbulo, nunca piense que su contribución es muy poco, recuerde que de poquito en poquito se llena el cantarito, y usted y su familia puede apoyar a otros hermanos que están esperando su ayuda. Dios le devolverá el 100% por uno. Muchas gracias por su participación.

English as a Second Language & Citizenship Classes St. Norbert ESL Program resumes Saturday, September 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Classes meet every Saturday in the Oscar Romero room, located on the second floor of the Ministry Center. The class is free and books are provided. Students should bring a pencil and paper. Some knowledge of English is helpful, but not required, to get the most out of this class. 

A Citizenship Preparation Class will also begin on September 13 at 9:30 a.m.in Oscar Romero Room. Students must have a green card, be 18 years or older and be able to speak, read, and write basic English. Students will study the required information for the interview and practice filling out the N‐400 Application.  _______________________________________________________________________

The St. Norbert Guadalupana Scholarship was established in 2006 by Hispanic Ministry. Funds are raised at the annual La Fiesta Dinner Dance.
