To Our Guests:Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview.
Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.
The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.
If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found in this bulletin, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. You may put this in the offering when it is passed at the end of the service. Pastor Dan Adamson ([email protected]) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.
For Children:Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.
Nursery is provided during the service for children 2 years of age and younger.
Children ages three through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the greeting portion of the service.
If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson ([email protected]).
Community Life:After the ServiceEach week, we linger for fellowship with one another. Please join us for refreshments in the cafeteria.
Community GroupsCommunity Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together.

The LiturgyPreparing in StillnessWe often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.
Call to WorshipWe need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.
Confession of SinBecause sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.
Assurance of GraceChrist has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.
The SermonSome view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.
CommunionCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.
Worship Through GivingBecause money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.
The BenedictionGod always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.
4
ORDER OF WORSHIPBy becoming a Christian, I belong to God and I belong to my brothers and sisters. It is not that I belong to God and then make a decision to join a local church. My being in Christ means being in Christ with those others who are in Christ. This is my identity. This is our identity. If the church is the body of Christ, then we should not live as disembodied Christians. - Tim Chester and Steve TimmisThe vocation of the local church could scarcely be more exalted. Called out of the world to be a light in the world, to be a united family among the disunited families of the earth, to be indwelled by Christ himself, to be the apple of God’s eye, to be graven on Christ’s hands, to be the glory of the image of the Holy Trinity, to be an embodiment of the infinite love of the cross, to be a collective portrait more beautiful than any other in the world — that is the church, the local church, the new people of God. - Timothy Savage
Call to Worship — Psalm 95: 6-7How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life forevermore. Come, let us all worship and bow down together;
Let us kneel together before the Lord, our maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
Prayer of InvocationEternal God, you have called us to be members of one body. Join us with those who in all times and places have praised your name, that with one heart and mind, we may show the unity of your church, and bring honor to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Prayer of ConfessionMake confession to God the Lord, and let everyone acknowledge with me their sins against God and their neighbor.
Father in heaven, You have called us out of the world. You have forgiven us our sins and filled us with your Spirit. You have called us to live as your people so that others would know you. Forgive us for our failures as your church. Forgive us for our fear to be known as your people. Forgive us for the grudges we have with others within and outside this congregation. Forgive us for being tight-fisted with our time, money, and our lives. Forgive us and cleanse us, O Lord. Let your light shine through us that your name would be great in this city.

Hymn of Assurance Wonderful, Merciful Savior
Silent ConfessionAssurance of Grace — 1 John 3:1
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. This is the good news.
Thanks be to God!Brothers and Sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?
We do.

Prayers of the People — Adapted from Psalm 67May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us.(Silent prayer for God to bless this congregation)Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer. That your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.(Silent prayer for a powerful display of God’s saving power in the city of Chicago)Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.Let the peoples praise you, O God; Let all the peoples praise you!(Silent prayer for our non-Christian friends, family members, and co-workers, that they will begin to follow Jesus)Lord, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn of Illumination Spirit of the Living God
God Speaks To Us
Sermon Text — Romans 12:3-13 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and ConsecrationThe Lord be with you.
And also with you.Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
God Strengthens Us
Confession of Faith — The Apostles’ CreedChristian, what do you believe?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was cruci-fied, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

DoxologyWorship Through Giving
Prayer for those searching for truthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.
Prayer of commitmentLord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
Prayers for Reflection
15
Benediction & DismissalMay the love of the Father enfold us, the wisdom of the Son enlighten us, and the fire of the Spirit kindle us; may the blessing of the Lord God come down upon us and remain with us always.
Amen.
Let us go forth to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God!
PostludeThere are women and men available to pray for your needs after the service in the front of the hall near the communion table.

4. Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won
O happy ones and holy,
Lord gives us grace that we
Like them the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with Thee.

2. Mid toil and tribulation,
And tumult of her war
She waits the consummation,
Of peace for evermore
Till with the vision glorious,
Her longing eyes are blest
And the great church victorious
Shall be the church at rest
3. The church shall never perish,
Her dear Lord to defend
To guide, sustain and cherish,
Is with her to the end
Though there be those that hate her,
And false sons in her pale
Against a foe or traitor,
She ever shall prevail
4. Yet she on earth hath union
With God the Three in One
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won
O happy ones and holy,
Lord gives us grace that we
Like them the meek and lowly,
On high may dwell with Thee.

SERVING THIS WEEK
SERVING NEXT WEEK
*In addition to congregational giving, 25% of our overall operating budget is currently comprised of financial support from other churches and individuals. Our budgeted congregational giving represents 75% of the overall operating budget.
Newer to Cityview? Go out to eat with a small group of regular attenders for lunch after the Sunday service. Today’s host is Lauren Mathues.
GATHERINGS & ANNOUNCEMENTSNO EVENING PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST We will pick back up our weekly prayer at the Adamson home starting in September.
HOST A SUNDAY LUNCH! Help us welcome those who are newer to Cityview by hosting a Sunday Lunch. It’s a simple commitment- just pick a nearby location and eat lunch with some other folks on a Sunday after church. We still need a few hosts for the next few months. Please contact Dan Adamson or Carolyn Koonce if you would be willing to serve in this way.
AFTER-CHURCH POTLUCK SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH Join us immediately following the service for a potluck and congregational meeting to hear about the upcoming fall events at Cityview. Please bring a dish to share.
SUNDAY MORNING APOLOGETICS CLASS SEPT 21 - OCT 19 / 9-9:50 A.M. AT MERIT Join us for an introduction to the theological discipline of apologetics. We will examine the intellectual or rational acceptability of Christian belief. To this end, we will seek to understand and refute common objections to the Christian worldview (the problem of evil, the new atheist movement, religious pluralism, etc.) In addition, we will study classic arguments for the belief in the Christian God and consider the role of apologetics for missions and evangelism. For more information contact Craig Hefner at [email protected].
COMMUNITY GROUPS Community Groups resume the week of September 8th. These are a great way to deepen relationships with one another and grow in our relationship with the Lord - consider committing to weekly attendance of one of the following:
