Crowds can expect an “udderly” good time at the 116th Interior Provincial Exhibition Sept. 2-6.

The diary division is highlighted this year with the theme, Udderly Awesome: Party Til the Cows Come Home, and General Manager Bryan Burns is excited about how that will play out at the fair.

He expects lots of cow costumes and cow-themed floats in the parade, creative booth decorations by exhibitors and 4-H members, and people dressed up to the theme throughout the event.

“I think our theme is going to be absolutely stellar,” said Burns, who has his own selection of Holstein-based paraphernalia to choose from. “I think it’s just a great opportunity to represent something that’s really big in our community, which is dairy.”

After eight years at the helm, Burns is still enthusiastic about introducing people to the world of farming even if they are initially drawn to the fair by the midway and other entertainment.

“That, in essence, is what our fair is all about – the agricultural component,” he noted. “Once we’ve brought them here, now we can expose them and get them engaged in agriculture.”

Thys Haambuckers, executive director of the dairy division, said the fair lets people see and do things connected to farming – from animals to food to equipment – in an engaging and friendly atmosphere.

“I think it gives the urban population a gateway to connect with their rural roots,”

said Haambuckers. “This is the only time a lot of the city people get to see any kind of livestock.

“We see other fairs where that component is dying out and we’re still going strong. We like to focus on the agricultural aspect of the fair. That’s what it’s all about.”

With over 2,000 exhibitors and almost 7,000 entries across 19 divisions, people will have ample opportunity to experience a true country fair at this year’s IPE.

TIME awaits at THE FAIR!

But the IPE has tons to offer in addition to its agriculture-based entertainment.

An expanded Iron Chef event will include demonstrations and tastings plus competitions for amateurs and professionals.

The Ram Truck Stage features a new lineup of musical entertainers provided through 542 Entertainment, the nightly Youth Talent Competition and the opening ceremonies on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. There is also the Indie Stage featuring lots of great local up-and-coming talent.

An expanded Kids World has lots of fun activities and performers including a Lego tent, gold panning, ea circus and an illusionist.

There is the always-popular West Coast Lumberjack Show, the Wrangler Canadian Professional Rodeo stocked by the Calgary Stampede, the mini chuckwagon races, farrier demonstrations, dog and rabbit agility shows and a wide array of vendors.

“We have 220 vendors who are geared to showcase their services or products and give you a chance to buy them. Some of them you can only buy at fairs,” added Burns. Burns said the IPE is a great economic driver for the community but none of it could happen without the 11,000 volunteer hours put in by 450 volunteers in addition to the 38 or so non-pro t groups that also work at and bene t from the fair.

Haambuckers said thanks must go to all the exhibitors who dedicate so much time and effort to what they do and then showcase those efforts at the IPE.

“We’re very proud and pleased to have these kinds of people. It doesn’t matter how much work the directors or the staff put into the fair, we’re not going to have a successful fair without exhibitors.”

Changes are made every year to make the fair run better and more smoothly but the effectiveness of any change takes at least two years to determine.

“That’s the challenge of any event. Whether you’re a one-day event or a ve-day event, it’s the only time you have to either see what you did wrong or try and x it or just get ready for the next year,” said Burns.

The addition of composting this year is sure to create some logistical headaches but Burns is determined to reduce the IPE’s footprint by taking such steps.

“We want to do a better job of taking care of the environment as a big event.”

Burns spends a lot of time on the fairgrounds over the ve days and he is always impressed at the unique qualities of the IPE.

“It’s such a family friendly atmosphere. It’s comfortable. People can just sit and talk. Everyone’s friendly and you feel that aspect when you come.”

Western Farrier and Blacksmith Demo

Blacksmiths work with metal to make and repair things...from complex items such as gates, grilles, railing, sculpture, tools and agricultural implements... to the simplest essentials for the ranchers like nails and horse shoes. Farriers nail the horseshoes into the hoof wall to support the horses’ feet and protect them on rocky terrain.

Iron Chef ContestBack again, this ever popular Iron Chef Contest is having some

new digs this year. We have created their own space, located on the west side of the rodeo grounds in the Diamond Centre, the IRON CHEF will once again challenge various teams against each other in a contest filled with great judges, mystery ingredients, and the crucial timeline that creates drama as the teams create their culinary masterpieces.

Agriculture Awareness

Come and experience all the hands on demonstrations, ac-tivities, games and information surrounding all things agricul-ture. This area provides some amazing facts and figures about where your food comes from.

West Coast Lumberjack Show

The West Coast Lumberjack Show is action-packed, non-stop entertainment, complete with its own portable stage, competitors and emcee. Since 1982 they have performed all over the world to great reviews and we are thrilled to have them back at the Armstrong IPE and Stampede.

T h e V e r n o n Pigeon and Poultry Club is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. The Club was formed initially as a pigeon club bringing together half a dozen pigeon fanciers so that they could show as a group at the Interior P r o v i n c i a l Exhibition. The original IPE show barn soon became too small as the Club expanded to include poultry and waterfowl. This building was torn down and under the leadership of Jay Lelond, with volunteers from the

building was constructed.

From 1965 to the present day the Club has been in charge of

the Pigeon and Poultry show at the IPE. This

includes providing a Director for this

Division and setting it up and looking after it during the Fair. Later a third

building was constructed to fit

in with the layout of the fair grounds and to

l a s t 10 years the entries

have levelled off at about 500 but the quality of birds entered has improved as exhibitors become more knowledgeable about various breeds and how to condition their birds for a show. Club members

make up a good percentage

of the exhibitors at the Fair. Volunteers from the Club during the Fair are on hand from 7:00 am. to 10:00 pm. to clean, feed, water and supervise the poultry show. Most of the fair-goers it seems go through the Poultry barn and at times it is so crowded that getting from one aisle to another is dif cult.

The Vernon Pigeon and Poultry Club runs other shows as well. For over 45 years the Club has had a show in conjunction with the Vernon Winter Carnival in February. In the last ten years the Club has also held a stand alone show in October or November called Fall Featherfest. Club members also show in other locations in B.C., Alberta and

T h e Border Collie

was originally called the “Scotch Sheep Dog” and originated in Northumberland along the borders of Scotland and England. It is a descendant from dogs used by the Vikings to herd reindeer. By using their prey, predator relationship, and its shear drive and love for working, the Border Collie has an eye that can hypnotize cattle. It can master any type of herd by crouching down and mesmerizing the animals with its intense stare. The shepherds in Scotland and Wales with their hilly farming land and rugged landscape saw the necessity for an all-purpose stock and herding dog, hence the ‘border collie’. Intelligence, tenacity, speed, ability to work tirelessly from morning ‘til night became the

basis of the characteristics of this breed. With the long lonely hours and rough terrain and climate, shepherd and dog formed a unique bond and respect, far beyond ‘a man’s best friend’ . Bragging rights in the local pubs, over a pint of beer, soon progressed to outright competition in the elds, where stock dog trialing was born. This little black and white dog, which crosses many an ocean, from Europe to Australia, North America, and South America, where bragging rights today are far more then over a ‘pint of beer’. Come out and see these tenacious, dogs as they awe you with their ability, intelligence, and beauty. Join us at the IPE for the “Working Stock

dog”.night became the at the IPE for the “Working Stock

RAM TRUCK DAY

The IPE is committed to reducing our ecological footprint, which is why we are partnering with Spa Hills Compost this year to divert as much of our food waste from the land ll as possible. Please use the compost bins by the food court for your food waste, paper plates and napkins whenever possible while here. Spa Hills Compost offers weekly food waste pick up for businesses in the North Okanagan-Shuswap.

Jack JacksonJack Jackson is a talented entertainer from Calgary, Alberta Canada, who has been performing for North American audiences

for over 30 years. Growing up in the middle of British Columbia, Canada, exposed Jack to the “country way of life” that has characterized his personality. With his “cowboy hat”

on or off, any time spent with Jack Jackson will reveal to you why he is called “Canada’s New Country Gentleman”.

Z34 116th Annual Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede

By Jackie PearaseAs the largest agricultural

show in B.C., the Interior Provincial Exhibition is a big deal for the exhibitors.

“It’s everybody who exhibits, whether it’s Lego, crafts or baking and canning. All these people, they want to showcase the best. They are proud of what they’ve done,” said Thys Haambuckers, executive director of the dairy division, the featured division at the IPE this year.

Haambuckers, who has over 30 years of experience showing beef and dairy cattle across North America, said showing at the fair helps farmers determine how they are doing by putting their animals next to others in the same class.

“For the open exhibitors, the open dairy show is a way of comparing their animals, seeing where they stand. Everybody likes to showcase the best they got. As long as you’re by yourself, you have the best one.”

Haambuckers, who has had his fair share of top placings at the IPE, said showing offers a

great chance to learn. “If we get our butt kicked

some times at the show – what went wrong? What did we do wrong?” he explained. “It makes you sit back and think and go back to the drawing board.”

As a small farmer in Trinity Valley, Naomi Fournier appreciates the feedback she gets from judges and input and tips from other farmers.

“For me, I don’t even care where I place. It’s a learning experience,” said the 26-year-old who raises Jersey cows and Nubian goats at her Birdsong Farm.

Fournier began showing her cows in 2008 after buying her rst purebred cow from one of her mentors, Don Hendrickson. She found the new experience to be both exciting and nerve-wracking.

“In the ring, if you ask me today, I will still tell you that I never took a single breath. I know that’s not actually true because I didn’t actually faint,” she said, laughing.

“I placed last. I was very happy with my placement.”

MARSHALLINGAREA

START

FINISHWith over 100 entries, the IPE Parade will start at 10:00am sharp. This year our mascot Haystack is saluting the IPE Dairy Division. “Udderly Awesome! - Party til the Cows Come Home” is the theme of the 2015 Armstrong Fair.

The parade will start by Country West Supply and travel along Pleasant Valley Blvd. then nishing along Smith Dr. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs and come early to avoid tra c delays.

Access into downtown Armstrong will be very limited during the parade. Visitors are asked to be in town before road closures begin at 9:30am or to take alternate routesusing Otter Lake and/or Lansdowne Roads.

“When I came out of the ring I was just so relieved that it was over, that I survived, I burst into tears. And probably to this day all the farmers think I was crying because of my placement not because I was so stressed out.”

She used all the feedback received from the judges and the help from other exhibitors over the years toward a first place finish for her female junior yearling at last year’s IPE, something witnessed by her mentor Hendrickson.

“He came over before I even got out of the ring and gave me a big hug. It was nice for him to see.”

Haambuckers said such camaraderie is common at the IPE, with exhibitors often offering help and tips to improve another’s showing.

“Since we moved to the Interior, I’ve never worked and seen a nicer group of people to show with. Here,

when somebody new comes in, they’re always willing to help them, to take them under their wing, to show them the ropes,” he added. “Even though we’re in the ring competing, we’re friends before and after.”

Fournier said showing has encouraged her to continue improving how she farms.

“For me, I like the challenge of trying to

breed the perfect cow. You have your breeding goals and you pick which to

breed and hope for a heifer calf. And when

you get that heifer calf, you hope she turns out exactly as you wanted it to.”

She is bringing seven cows to the IPE this time, six being home-bred, and she has her first herd of three milking cows entered. She considers the IPE to be a working vacation, one she always anxiously awaits.

“I look forward to it every year. I start planning for next year as soon as it is over.”

During the Fair, Sept. 2nd to 6th, Rodeo Tickets are sold from 8:30am to 1:00pm at the IPE of ce (across from the fairgrounds). Then from 2:00pm to 9:00pm each day, tickets are available for pickup and purchase at the Rodeo Ticket Booth on the grounds in front of the Red Grandstand. Please call 250-546-9406 to reserve your seats.

Professional rodeo action consists of two types of com-petitions - roughstock events and timed events and an all -around cowboy crown.

In the roughstock events bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding a contes-tant’s score is equally depen-dent upon his performance and the animal’s performance. To earn a quali ed score, the cowboy, while using only one

hand, must stay aboard a bucking horse or bull for eight seconds. If the rider touches the animal, himself or any of his equipment with his free hand, he is disquali ed.

In saddle bronc and bare-back riding, a cowboy must “mark out” his horse; that is, he must exit the chute with his spurs set above the horse’s shoulders and hold them there until the horse’s front feet hit the ground after the initial jump out of the chute. Failing to do so results in disquali cation.

During the regular season, two judges each score a cow-

boy’s quali ed ride by award-ing 0 to 25 points for the rider’s performance and 0 to 25 points for the animal’s effort. The judges’ scores are then combined to determine the contestant’s score. A perfect score is 100 points.

In timed events steer wres-tling, team roping, tie- down roping, barrel racing and steer roping; cowboys and cowgirls at “the other end of the arena” compete against the clock, as well as against each other.

A contestant’s goal is to post the fastest time in his or her event. In steer wrestling and the roping events, calves and steers are allowed a head start. The competitor, on horseback, starts in a three -sided fenced area called a box. The fourth side opens into the arena.

A rope barrier is stretched across that opening and is tied to the calf or steer with a breakaway loop. Once the calf or steer reaches the head- start point - predetermined by the size of the arena the barrier is automatically released. If a cowboy breaks that barrier, a 10- second penalty is added.

Rodeo Announcer ~ Brett GardnerLike many announcers before

him, Gardiner’s Rodeo career began in the arena as a contes-tant. While competing in both the Roughstock and Timed Events, he gained an insight and love for the sport of Rodeo. It is that love for the sport and appreciation for the contestants that he tries to convey to the audience each and every perfor-mance. Gardiner’s distinctive sound, infectious energy and informative style has seen him climb the ranks of the industry and become one of the most sought after Announcers on Canadian soil.

An occupation that will see him travel from coast to coast 40 weeks of the year as he has quickly and rmly endeared himself to audiences across Canada. Brett has been fortunate enough to have received the Bill Kehler Memorial award on two separate occasions during his intercollegiate career and in 2011 and 2012 received the industry’s top honour by being named the CPRA’s Announcer of the Year.

When not travelling the Rodeo trail Brett makes his home in Sylvan Lake, AB with his wife Jaclyn and their two children Grady and Hadley.

Dennis Halstead ~ Rodeo ClownDennis Halstead has

been a Professional Rodeo Clown and Barrelman for 11 years and still enjoys being in the arena as much today as he did 10 years ago. Dennis carries that enthusiasm into the arena with each performance.

As well as a Rodeo Clown, he has been a City of Calgary Fire ghter for 25 years. Being a Fire ghter has helped him appreciate what he does in rodeo, especially his kindness towards children.
