Our temperatures are cooling down while our academic pursuits are heating up. I’m so impressed with our teachers as they work to use the Chromebooks effectively within their instruction. Students, too, have had to grow and learn how to use the Chromebooks as part of their learning. I’m excited to see how these devices are used to expand instructional strategies throughout the year. I need to express my gratitude to you as part of our partnership regarding attendance and dress code. I have noticed a lot more adherence to the dress code this year. Thank you for continuing to reinforce the importance of acceptable dress for school. Additionally, please remember to notify the Attendance Office about approved absences for your student. Our staff is grateful for your phone calls. Please continue to schedule appointments for students at times that do not require missing classes when you are able. Dr. Mandel’s Message

Dear MHS Parents and Guardians,

We are off and running into the month of September! Our temperatures are cooling down while our academic

pursuits are heating up. I’m so impressed with our teachers as they work to use the Chromebooks effectively

within their instruction. Students, too, have had to grow and learn how to use the Chromebooks as part of their

learning. I’m excited to see how these devices are used to expand instructional strategies throughout the year.

I need to express my gratitude to you as part of our partnership regarding attendance and dress code. I have

noticed a lot more adherence to the dress code this year. Thank you for continuing to reinforce the importance

of acceptable dress for school. Additionally, please remember to notify the Attendance Office about approved

absences for your student. Our staff is grateful for your phone calls. Please continue to schedule appointments

for students at times that do not require missing classes when you are able. Our teachers thank you in advance

for having students present and ready to learn every day.

We will be offering the PSAT on our campus in October. This test is important for students in the 10th and

11th grades. The results inform 10th grade students about areas of academic strengths and areas to work on,

and the results from the 11th grade year are shared with college and universities and lead to determinations for

the National Merit Awards. Students can sign up in the Bookstore and with Dr. Corner in the College and

Career Center.

Thank you for taking your time to read our newsletter - and I look forward to seeing you on campus.

More Marana Athletic News

Congratulations to all of our athletes who kicked off their seasons last week. We had a successful start and are looking

forward to the coming weeks’ competitions. I have asked coaches of in-season sports to submit a name each week of an

athlete in their programs who have demonstrated and embodied the types of qualities we want promoted within our

athletic programs. Some of those characteristics are commitment, loyalty, a team first mentality, putting forth great effort,

coachability, honesty, humility, and weekly athletic performance. While this is not an all-encompassing list it is a starting

point for recognizing student-athletes who represent their teams, our school, and this community in a way that is reflective

of what we stand for. This week’s Athletes of the Week are:

Boys XC: Austin Holmes: From Coach Atkins, “Austin has been a vital role model on our team. He is a very encouraging

teammate who is willing to go out of his way to help others. He goes above and beyond while at practice to help set a

great example for the rest of the team.”

Girls XC: Daniela Arellano: From Coach Atkins: “Daniela has been working extremely hard the first three weeks of

practice. She is always asking for extra training at the end of practice. She has participated in the optional Saturday

morning practices at Dove Mountain. She is very focused on improving her running ability as well as encouraging others

to do their best. She is very dedicated to the team’s success and has been recruiting other female student-athletes to join

the team.”

Boys Golf: Dylan Telford: From Coach Moreno, “This week in our match against Salpointe, Dylan went up against the

number one player in the city and a University of Arizona commit and beat him shooting a score of 35 at Randolph.”

Girls Golf: Marisol Benavidez: From Coach Corona: “Mari has taken the role of captain of the golf team very seriously.

She has motivated teammates to excel in practice and matches. She took it upon herself to make personalized hair ribbons

for all members of the team. She helped a fellow teammate feel more confident about the first tournament of the season by

making a phone call and encouraging her teammate. She was the medalist in the first match of the season and is currently

in third place in the Nighthawk Invitational.”

Football: Travis Darrough: From Coach Litten: “Travis played both as an offensive and defensive lineman. Although he

was outsized most of the night Travis had a good game and fought until the end in a game that had many swings. He was

a great leader for us.”

Girls Volleyball: McKayla Miller. From Coach Ball: “McKayla has shown strong leadership throughout the preseason

and off the court. She is respectful to her teammates and coaches and committed to the program. She had adapted to the

new coaching system and has been a model for her teammates. We are looking forward to what she will do for us this

season.”

Boys Swim: Dallin Patton: From Coach Condit: “Dallin does a great job in practice, trains hard, and does whatever he

can to get better every day. He asks for feedback whenever possible and makes changes when needed.”

Girls Swim: Audrey Carter: From Coach Condit: “Audrey takes initiative. She strives to get better by asking for help with

stroke technique and turns/wall details. When told, she makes changes and consistently applies herself in everything she

does.”

At MHS we are very proud to offer a diverse array of

CTE/JTED programs. The integration of these programs

throughout our curriculum is just one of the many

opportunities for students that our comprehensive high

school provides. Throughout the year we will be sharing

glimpses into the programs with you. Please take a look at

our Criminal Justice Program. At Marana High School,

students have the opportunity to explore careers in the criminal justice field. This course uses Arizona CTE

standards as well as hands on activities and training to provide extensive knowledge and understanding of the

criminal justice system. Students explore criminal justice from all areas from the history and foundation of

police, search and seizure, and Arizona Revised Statutes. The class is a three year program, which culminates

with students studying in an international police dispatch certification. The course employs hands on activities

including projects, presentations, discussions as well as real life simulations in crime scenes, mock court trial,

emergency first aid, and drinking and driving simulations.

ROCKIN’ the PBIS

At Marana, we try to instill Tiger Pride in all students for their academics, athletics, artistic and technical abilities. But more importantly, we try to nurture and reward inspiring behaviors because each student is an individual while positive behaviors are very specific. Acknowledging the positive in our Tigers for their actions can create life long adjustments. Please help us and support our PBIS intiative by sharing kind words at home, and asking your students, “Tell me one positive thing that happened at school today.”
