August 27, 2010 Issue No. 69
Reconstruction: Reconstruction and works in Package 1 have slowed down since the start of Ramadan due to
the laborers' need to adjust to heat and fasting and the fact that they leave at 12:00 and have
not opted to work overtime. Although UNRWA understands the difficulty of working during
Ramadan, the agency hopes that laborers understand the importance of accelerating the works
so that delivery of Package 1 would be in time. Delivery of Package 1 should be the highest
priority not for UNRWA alone but for the community too. Additionally, the community and
laborers should take advantage of the overtime which consists of 50% increase which comes into effect after
completing 6 hours of work per day.
Again to avoid delays in finishing works in Package 1, Al Jihad Company urgently needs block masons to finish
the works so that plastering and tiling can follow. Interested masons, please go to the ESC in Beddawi and NBC
to sign up for work.
Relief: Starting August 16, under the Building Capacity of Women and Girls project funded by Austria, the center
organized an Iftar program for 250 poor families in the center. Under the same project and as part of the 6-
month sewing course, a one month- training of 14 women from NBC on curtain sewing started this week.
Recovery:
The Employment Services Centers continue to match jobs for seekers from both NBC and Beddawi camps to
potential employers. By June 2010, the centers interviewed and registered 2045 job seekers. Of these, 1589
have been referred to employment with 292 of them securing jobs, and 270 have been referred to training with
149 obtaining training places. In July and August, the NBC center is placing over 100 new job seekers into the
reconstruction project.
