WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?

For centuries, every generation tends to project a subjective image of Jesus according to their own needs and time. For the Jews, Jesus was just the son of Joseph and Mary, others saw Him as a prophet, then as a criminal and hanged Him on the cross and later as a Son of God after the Resurrection. Even after His Resurrection, people still hold different images of who exactly He is. This weekend, I ask you: Who do you say He is?

This is the same question that Jesus asked His own disciples, and Simon gave an objective true answer of who Jesus truly is. Note that, when Peter gave this objective answer, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus told him, “It was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven.” This means that we cannot rely on personal feelings to arrive at such an objective answer, but need a special revelation.

We may be tempted to think that the whole conversation is about Simon and Jesus. In the actual sense, it is about Jesus and His Church (us). We see Peter declared as a rock on which the Church would be built, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. This is not because of Peter’s strength, but because Christ would always be there to protect it. It is because of this perpetual presence of Christ in the Church that it has survived all the storms despite its human composition. Her divine origin gives her a firm foundation to overcome all attacks from the enemy; Satan who comes in many ways.

Let us remember that the Church is we the people, the community of believers who profess the one true faith in Jesus, and this faith is the one to help us answer the same question. Who do you think He is to you? This question is an invitation to each one of us to discover that revealed truth to the Church (us) and deepen our faith in Him disposed through Scripture and Tradition. These are the sources of truth that have been entrusted to the Church through which we can be revealed of the knowledge to know who Christ really is.

PTO 365 DAY RAFFLE WINNERS

“On your knees and give me 50 Hail Marys!” Imagine Christ ordering us like that as if we were recruits in the basic training. But really, maybe He should do that. Are we praying enough? We have so many problems in our world today, and in our

own lives. Are we bringing these to God often enough? At the end of each day as I lay in bed, I ask myself if I had prayed enough that day. As a priest I pray what is called The Liturgy of the Hours, or the Breviary for short. It is the prayer of the Church and consists in five to seven moments throughout the day where psalms and readings and prayers are recited. Morning Prayer, Daytime Prayer (which can be an optional three times a day – Mid-morning, Midday, and Mid-afternoon), Evening Prayer and Night Prayer, with the Office of Readings thrown in at any hour. The Liturgy of the Hours is a response to Christ’s call to “pray always” (cfr. Luke 21:36 and 1Thess 5:17). I also try to pray the Rosary and do a holy hour before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament every day.

Having specific prayer intentions in mind, especially at Mass, is a great way to help us pray well. Of course, prayer is not just asking God with a laundry list of things. Primarily, prayer is the union of a creature with God, the Loving Creator. This union is around the Will of God. It can take the form of asking for something, but also simple Adoration and desire to see God’s Will done in the life of the one who is praying and in the world. It’s all based on a love for God that we are all called to. Love means pleasing the one we love. You want what the one you love wants. That purifies your intentions in prayer – you will ask only what God wants, not what you want. It is like Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane when He asked for the cup of suffering to be taken away from Him, but He did not what He wanted but what His Father wanted. He accepted God’s Will and even desired it to be done, and He suffered and died on the Cross the next day. This is our model for praying well.

So, do we pray enough in this spirit – accepting and even wanting God’s Will? Is that the theme of our daily life? I know it makes a good topic for conversation with our Lord, usually starting with a complaint about what’s happening (or not happening) in our life and hopefully ending with understanding and acceptance of God’s Will for us.

And that brings us to the best type of prayer we can do every day – conversation with God. Talking to God in our own words, and sometimes with tears or a sigh or a laugh. Be ourselves with God. Who are we? We are creatures. We are sinners. We are repentant sinners. We are His sons and daughters. Would you go a day without talking to your parents? I guess as kids maybe we would have. That’s how bad we were. We feel bad about that now, I’m sure, especially if our mom or dad is no longer with us. We should feel the same way with our Heavenly Father. And that should move us to speak to Him every day and more often every day.

So, I hope you all will pray more. I’m gonna really try harder. We need prayer. Our world definitely needs lots of prayers. It’s up to us to do it. So, let’s all get on our knees and give God 50! A Rosary is a great prayer!

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA VINCENTIANS...

Like Peter in today’s Gospel, we can find that when we open our eyes to see, our ears to hear and our hearts to experience Jesus’ presence in our daily lives, God reveals Himself to us. Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

Married couples celebrating a significant wedding anniversary (25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 65, 70, 75) in 2020, may still request a congratulatory certificate from Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr by contacting Stephanie Calpin in our Parish Office at 513-398-3821, ext. 3102, or [email protected].

These certificates will be distributed here at St. Susanna at the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday, September 19th. Due to COVID-19 there will not be a cake reception following this Mass, however, anniversary couples will receive a special celebration keepsake. Couples celebrating these milestone anniversaries with us on September 19th at the 5:00pm Mass should RSVP online at www.stsusanna.org/rsvp by September 11th.

NEXT WEEKEND IS A 5TH SUNDAY COLLECTION (AUGUST 29TH/30TH)

St. Susanna SVdP Conference would like to thank those who have made a donation to the Conference so that we could minister to our neighbors reaching out for assistance during this challenging time. Many of our neighbors have been affected by loss of jobs due to COVID-19 making it challenging to pay rent, utility bills, prescriptions, food, etc.

Next weekend, Aug 29/30, is a 5th Sunday collection with 90% of the collection given to our SVdP Conference. To make a donation on line, go to www.osvhub.com/stsusanna/funds, sign in or create an account, then scroll down to St. Vincent de Paul-St. Susanna Conference and click on Give Now. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide to help us continue ministering to those within our parish boundaries who are struggling.

JESUS IN THE PEW Here are some questions we need to ask ourselves if we want to continue to be a warm and welcoming community of faith: Do you see the person in the pew next to you Christ in disguise? Do you find fellowship with your fellow parishioners when you are at church? Have you reached out in friendship to a parishioner you see each Sunday but have never met? Do you pray for your fellow parishioners? Jesus is really in the pew next to you at church. Didn’t Jesus say, “When two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst”; have we seen Him there among us? As Christians we need to recognize Christ around us and act differently, with respect and love, with encouragement and patience. Christ sometimes hides in our neighbor. How does the phrase go: “What you did for the least of my brothers, that you did unto me.” He is near us; especially in the poor and the weak, in those who seem to be less in the world’s eyes. We have to reach out to them, be in solidarity with them, offer them ourselves to help them along their way. So, the next time you see the person next to you in church, see Christ and reach out to them in love and fellowship. Even a kind smile at the sign of peace can go a long way. Let’s continue to make St. Susanna a place of welcome, of joy, and of holiness.

HELP US SEND SUPPORT TO FR. ELIAS’ HOME PARISH IN UGANDA

St. Susanna is “twinning” with Fr. Elias’ home Parish in Uganda (Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Nyamitanga Parish). Through the generous donations of St. Susanna parishioners, funds have been raised to help provide food for 1,400 families who are in need because of the COVID lockdown in their country. Each family received a bag of corn flour and a bag of beans. At this time, Fr. Richard Ssebugwawo, pastor of OLPH, has identified 600 additional families in need of food. The amount needed to feed 600 families is $5,343 or $9.00/family. We will continue to collect donations through August.

If you are interested in participating, there are multiple ways to support this relationship: • Send a check made out to St. Susanna Church with “Our

MONTHLY DEVOTION

TALK WITH YOUR KIDS

Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary means to recall the emotions of joy and sadness that Mary experienced in her own life. When you look at an image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, you see a burning heart surrounded with a crown of thorns and pierced with a sword. The Immaculate Heart of Mary shows us that despite the sufferings of Jesus (crown of thorns), He loves all of us, regardless of our sins, and spilled His blood (the sword) in hope that we would join Him

in Heaven. It is for this reason that despite the trials and sufferings of Jesus, Mary’s heart still burns with love and devotion.

As the mother of Jesus, Mary experienced the same feelings our own mother has for us. Whether we are happy or sad, our mom shares in our feelings (even if she doesn’t tell you.)

The Bible tells us that “and his mother kept all these things in her heart” (Lk 2:51). We can share in Mary’s emotions and constant love for Jesus by recalling the mysteries of the Rosary and by praying the seven sorrows.

PRAYER FOCUS THIS WEEK:WISDOM

Pray that your child will develop the ability to discern right from wrong and put it into practice on a daily basis.

LIVE IT OUT!THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT: CHARITYHelp the Church to grow within your own community.

Many times we are called to pray for the well being and spiritual conversion of ourselves and of those close to us. On September 8, 1840, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Sister Justine Bisqueyburo in France.

Mary appeared to Sister Justine holding a green scapular in one hand and her Immaculate Heart in the other. Mary asked Sister Justine to spread devotion of the Immaculate Heart to others by distributing the green scapular.

The green scapular (recall earlier that green symbolizes hope and spiritual growth), contains an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary on one side and an image of the Immaculate Heart on the other. When using the scapular to invoke Mary’s help, we are called to pray, “Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us, now and at the hour of our death.”

The church permits that we may wear the green scapular, give a scapular to someone, and/or place it in the vicinity of the person for whom we are praying. We simply need to pray what Mary had asked us to and have hope that our prayers will be answered by God.

For more information on the green scapular visit the Society of the Green Scapular at www.greenscapular.com.

FOR Reflection¬It’s not easy being a leader of God’s people.

Pray for those who have been called to that role.

¬Have you ever thought of volunteering to serve on a church committee?

Who’s in Charge?

There are lots of reasons one could be in charge. You might be the only one left to do the job. Or, in

the case of babysitting, you might simply be older. You could be in charge because you are a bully with the biggest fists, sticks, or guns. Or you might be in charge because you are the best qualified for the job. Today’s readings offer us two stories about being chosen for leadership.

In the Old Testament reading, Shebna, an official in King Hezekiah’s court, overreached his position of authority. He was demoted and replaced by Eliakim. Carrying the key symbolizes authority over the entire household. Placing it on the shoulder suggests an investiture ceremony. In the Gospel, entrusting Peter with the keys to the kingdom of heaven suggests similar authority, though in a significantly different household.

In both instances the position of authority is meant to be exercised for the benefit of the members of the

respective household. It was precisely because of his failure in this matter that Shebna was demoted and Eliakim placed in charge. What about Peter? The Gospel tells us that the choice of Peter followed his remarkable statement of faith: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

These stories tell us that God chooses very ordinary people for positions of leadership. Why them? Are they the only ones left? Are they the oldest? Were they the best qualified? It was not because they were bullies. Obviously God thought they could do the job.
