TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SAINT AMELIA

-3-

Dear St. Amelia Parish Family,

Names are important. Do you know the meaning of your name or why you were given the name you bear?

My name is Sebastian - patron of soldiers and athletics; died a martyr’s death as he was hung from a tree and

shot with arrows. I was named after my dad’s father – my grandfather; it was considered an honor shared with a

child.

Our name is important. It identifies us through life. It can reveal the qualities up to which our parents hoped

we would live. It can connect us to a relative, person, saint or relationship our parents’ thought were special

and unique.

In the scriptures, Jesus, whose name means, “God who saves,” takes time with His disciples for reflection

and formation. He asks who the people say that He is. The disciples answer John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or

one of the prophets. The people identify Jesus with important persons in the history of the Israelite community.

When Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” Simon answers, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Christ comes from the Hebrew word meaning anointed. Christ is a title that would identify Jesus as the Son of

God, the long-awaited Messiah.

As Jesus notes, Peter could not have come to such an understanding and knowledge on his own. No, this

understanding came from God. Because of the faith that Simon witnessed, Jesus changes his name to Peter,

which means rock. Peter is the rock or foundation of the disciples because he faithfully paid attention to Jesus

and the movement of God’s spirit within Peter’s own mind and heart. Peter is the rock and foundation of the

community that would be known as church, because he is willing to express the depth of his faith in Christ, no

matter the cost.

Peter gives me hope because he was so human. That’s why I love Peter. One minute he gets it and the next

he doesn’t. One minute he is faithful and the next he is a doubter. One minute he is with Christ and the next he

abandons him. One minute he is strong, willing to defend the Lord and the next he is weak and cowering. He

needed to grow in understanding and faith just like you and me. Maybe this is another reason Peter is the rock,

because he was so human and so open to God.

When people see you and me – who do they say that we are? Think about that? Do they say only Sebastian,

son of Nicolo and Concetta; grandson of Sebastiano and Carmela and Joseph and Rose; brother of Joseph or do

they say Christian, Christ bearer, who helps others see and hear and touch and know the Christ, the Son of the

living God?

If someone were to ask you - who are you, what would you answer? My journey in life has helped me reveal

to others who I am - that I am son, brother, priest, friend, broken, forgiven, healed, nurtured, blessed, gifted,

imperfect and loved. I am called to be a disciple of Christ and witness to him through my cross; through my

sorrows and joys; through my suffering and rising; through my following the example of Peter and being able

to cry out - You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. For we believe that we are members of a church that is

filled with saints and sinners, human and divine. Christians are not perfect, we are forgiven. Our names are im-

portant. They identify us through life. What do our names reveal about us and our faith? Who do people say that

we are?

In Christ’s Love and Peace,

Father Sibby

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SAINT AMELIA

-4-

Two messages are contained in today’s gospel.

First, the entire basis of our Christian church

comes from Jesus’ statement that He is building His

church on Peter. Peter’s leadership role was bestowed

on him not because he earned it in any way. In fact,

his selection by Jesus might have been a surprise to

the other apostles. Peter was brash, impetuous, force-

ful – and he sometimes spoke without thinking.

But not this time! Jesus recognizes that His Father

has put the words of faith in Peter’s mouth. Peter

speaks for us all, and Jesus marked him to lead His

Church.

Second, and perhaps most important for us, is Je-

sus’ questioning of the apostles. He is interested in

how the crowds He has been teaching perceive Him.

When the apostles pass on the crowds’ opinions, He

digs deeper. He asks the apostles, “You’ve lived with

me, who do you say that I am?” “What have you

learned?”

What’s our takeaway? Simply that Jesus asks each

one of us, each day, “Who do you say that I am?” That

Is because faith is a process, not for most of us a one-

time spontaneous revelation. It calls for a regular re-

affirmation on our part.

Can I answer faithfully, “You are the Christ, the Son

of the living God?” Do I have a faith that moves moun-

tains? How deeply do I believe that Jesus came to pro-

vide salvation and love to all? Does this faith lead me

to take His love to others? Just something to think

about.

IS GOD CALLING YOU?

The Lord is calling people from the East and West

and North and South as priests, sisters, brothers and

deacons. Are you one of them?

If God is calling you to a Church vocation, please

call Father Andrew Lauricella at 847-5535.

JEFFREY DONOVAN ASSIGNED TO ST. AMELIA

FOR PASTORAL YEAR EXPERIENCE

Hello All,

I am Jeffrey Donovan. I just finished my fourth

year in seminary and clinical chaplain program at

the Cleveland Clinic this past summer. I will soon

be starting my yearlong assignment with you.

I am originally from South Buffalo, but have done

quite a bit of moving around, as I was raised in a

military family. I am the second oldest of five chil-

dren. I have three brothers and one sister. I have a

bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Theology, and Clas-

sics from Canisius College. While at Canisius, I was

part of the ROTC program for two years and was

part of the rifle team, having gone to the nationals

twice while on the team. Furthermore, I was a Teach-

er’s Assistant for three semesters in the philosophy

department, thus, I have some teaching/tutoring

experience.

Aside from that, I worked as a sailing instructor

since I was in high school up until I entered the

seminary back in 2016. Since then, I have been fo-

cusing on my academics and formation in regards to

the Program of Priestly Formation. I have had many

great experiences with my brother seminarians, past

parish assignments and opportunities, such as a

mission trip to Jamaica. I look forward to a great

year and great experiences with all of you at St.

Amelia’s.

diction at 6:00 p.m.

PATRIOTIC ROSARY

At this critical time in the history of our country,

please join us as we continue to pray our Patriotic

Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. We pray in

response to the Blessed Mother’s plea! We will meet

outside the main doors of our church near the statue

of the Blessed Mother at 6:45 p.m. and begin praying

by 7:00 p.m. on the following dates:

Thursday, September 17th

Thursday, October 15th

Bring a lawn chair and sit outside, or for those

who prefer, park near the Blessed Mother and roll

down your window. There is plenty of room to spread

out and this area is in shade by this time of the day.

In case of rain, we will move inside the church itself.

Dear God, please bless and protect America!

Have you ever thought about becoming Catholic or

know someone who has? Are you a member of another

Christian denomination, but have been attending ser-

vices at St. Amelia’s and would like to join officially? If

you answered “yes” to any of these questions, the

R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program

is made for you! This program is designed to provide

an introduction and discussion of the Catholic faith for

non-Catholics. We have begun registration for the fall.

ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES

Now is the time! If you have already received the

sacraments of Baptism and Communion, but for some

reason have not yet been confirmed, we are offering

classes this fall to get you caught up. Confirmation is

required to become a godparent or sponsor in the

Catholic Church. If you are looking to deepen your

commitment to the Lord by becoming a fully initiated

member of the Church, consider making this the year

to pursue Confirmation. For further information or if

you have any questions, please contact Father Peter at

836-0011, ext. 126 or [email protected]

VIRTUAL BIBLE STUDY

There will be a Virtual Bible Study every Thursday

facilitated by Arlene Meyerhofer at 11:30 a.m. or 7:00

p.m. from September 17th-November 19th.

Jesus: The Way, the Truth, and the Life is a ten

week video study program and book. Anchored in the

life of Christ as presented in the Gospels, this study

explores the entirety of Jesus’ life - who He is, what He

is really like, what He taught, what He did for our sal-

vation and what this means for Catholics today.

To access the study online as an individual, simply

purchase the Study Set to get immediate access to the

videos and study support materials for 12 months.

You will be required to make a free account on

Thinkific, the platform Ascension has partnered with

to deliver the study experience online. This only needs

to be done once. The Thinkific account is separate

from your Ascension account. To join, please contact

Ascension Press at [email protected] or call

INFORMATION FOR ALL

ST. AMELIA MINISTRIES

As we continue to deal with the Covid Pandemic

issues in our church and school, we do it always

with the safety and care of all our parishioners,

staff, faculty and students. We continue to imple-

ment six feet safe distancing, constant sanitizing of

the church, classrooms and individually, as well.

With this in mind, all of the St. Amelia Parish

Ministries have to continue following all mandates

for large group gatherings. This means that the

facilities of St. Amelia’s (school and church) are not

able to be used, as we want to preserve a safe envi-

ronment for everyone.

Due to this reality, we are no longer allowing

the ministries to meet as in the past. These regula-

tions will be reviewed in January 2021.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.
