August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day, during this time it is important to raise
awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of drug–related death. It also acknowledges the

Trends, News and Updates
LGBTQ Youth Suffer From Mental Health Illness
According to the a report from HealthDay News, 40% of LGBTQ youth and more than half of
transgender and non-binary youth contemplated taking their life this past year. Many
LGBTQ youth are bullied daily whether in-person or online on how they look, dress, and
their sexual orientation. This type of bullying affects a persons mental health in very
negative ways and some individuals have attempted and completed suicide due to the
bullying they receive daily. It’s important for mental health professionals, teachers,
caregivers and anyone else who works with LGBTQ youth to be aware of the warning signs
and understand how to help someone going through severe depression and anxiety from
bullying and gender identity.

“We talk about them because we’re proud. We talk about them, because even though
they are not physically with us, they are never far from our mind. We talk about them,
because they are part of us, a part that we could never ignore or disown. We talk about
them because we love them still and always will. Forever. Nothing will ever change that.”

Medical Marijuana: What You Should Know
A number of individuals have turned to herbal remedies for treating their pain or discomfort
using medical marijuana, here is what you should know. The FDA, the agency that regulates
medications, hasn't approved marijuana as a treatment for any condition. State laws differ
on the conditions that medical marijuana may be able to treat including: Chron’s disease,
epilepsy, seizures, Alzheimer’s, cancer but scientists and researchers aren't sure that it
actually helps any of these conditions. Many researchers are still unsure off how the
chemicals in marijuana affect your brain and body. They are aware of the cannabinoid
receptors in your brain and in your immune system but are unsure of how the drug affects
them is what’s unsure. There are a number of risks associated with the unknowns' of using
medical marijuana but risks we do know are, breathing problems, car accidents, pregnant
women and using marijuana as well as psychotic disorders and schizophrenia. A lot of time
and research is put into legalizing medicines on the market, and there are negative factors
involved in the unknown.

Poor Sleep Linked with Teen Depression
There is a relationship between lack of sleep which significantly increases the risk for
depression in teens. A study was done at the University of Reading, and researches found
among 4,790 participants, those experiencing depression reported poor quality and time
spent asleep. Researchers noticed a difference when the teenagers were going to sleep 30
minutes later each night compared to other participants. The group who had a depressive
diagnosis were sleeping less than 7 and a half hours on week nights and over nine house on
weekends. Teens 14-17 need approximately 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Getting
adequate sleep each night will positively affect a persons mental health and well-being.

Prevention Awareness
Vaping Resource For Teens
The State Department of Health partnered with the Truth Initiative and created a text-based
intervention program called, “This is Quitting.” The program is tailored to specific age groups
(13-17 and 18-24) to give appropriate quitting recommendations. Teens can text
“DropTheVape” to 88709. This program will send users daily text messages tailored to their
sign-up date and their target quit date. This program offers encouragement, motivation, skill
building and self-efficacy building exercises and coping strategies.

Vaping Resource for Parents/Adults
The Truth Initiative, had expanded their teen text resource to a parent and adult version as
well. Parents and other adults who are looking to help young people quit vaping should text
“QUIT” to (202) 899-7550. This text coaching is a proven, powerful strategy to change
behavior.

FCC Unanimously Approves 988 as the New Three-Digit Suicide Prevention Hotline
The Federal Communications Commission approved ‘988’ as the three-digit suicide prevention
hotline. The effect on many individual’s mental health following the death of George Floyd has
been profound. A study by the Medical Journal JAMA states, three times as many U.S. adults
reported symptoms of serious psychological distress in April compared with two years earlier.
Telecom and voice service companies will be mandated to have a 988 hotline by July 16, 2022;
two years from now.

How To Have Summer Fun Amid The Coronavirus Pandemic
Summer is here, and many people are trying to figure out how to connect with others.
According to Therersa DiDonato an associate professor of psychology at Loyola University,
socializing can help boost self-esteem and provide a sense of meaning and purpose. Some
ideas to have a socially distant gathering can include, having teens meet outside with a small
number of friends. Try having a picnic birthday party where every person brings their own
blanket. Hiking with friends, nature walks, picnics, riding bikes and scooters, playing in the
sprinkler and water slides in the backyard are all fun things which can be done while social
distancing. If taking a trip to the beach, bring extra towels for everyone to be spaced out.
Another idea, some neighborhoods can hold communal cookouts where families bring their
grills to the front yard to BBQ and eat together while being socially distant. Search Google for
more ideas on social distancing get-togethers. CFLR’s Prevention Department has also included
a number of resources to keep your family busy this summer as well as some back to school
resources.

Oneida County Suicide Prevention Coalition Their mission is: Awareness, Educate, Prevent, Support.
They come together once a month to get involved in the community (Oneida County). This coalition is

Mental Health During COVID-19
During this pandemic of COVID-19, many states are seeing an increase in suicide rates. It is important to
know the signs and symptoms to be able to prevent suicide. There is no single cause for suicide. Suicide
most often occurs when stressors and health issues converge to create an experience of hopelessness
and despair. Depression is the most common condition associated with suicide, and it is often
undiagnosed or untreated. It is important to know the signs and symptoms of suicidal behavior. These
behavior’s can include, but are not limited to; talking about wanting to kill themselves, talking about
shame or guilt, giving away possessions, and saying goodbye to family and friends. Mental Health
conditions such as depression, anxiety, and problems involving substance use and abuse increase the
risk of suicide. It’s important to note that most people who actively manage their mental health
conditions go on to lead more positive lifestyles. If you are struggling, call the Mobile Crisis Assessment
Team (MCAT) at 315.732.6228 OR 1.844.732.6228
