August 2019 Dear OGUMC Family, Thank you for the radical hospitality you have shown me over the past month! I am grateful for the opportunity to be your pastor. As we continue to get to know each other and discern the needs of the church and community together, I invite you and strongly encourage your participation in the two following opportunities: 1) Wednesday night, August 14: During the first Wednesday night meal of the fall, we will have a ministry brainstorming time. You will be sitting at tables in the fellowship hall with notecards and pens. While you eat, you will be invited to prayerfully “brainstorm” and write down the various ministry ideas that you have. After I have time to sort out the cards, we will see what the Spirit is stirring among us and divide into groups to discuss and set goals. 2) Over the next couple months, various church members will be hosting small group gatherings in their homes where you will have the opportunity to gather with me, to ask questions, and to respond to questions about the “DNA” and the needs of this church and community. Each gathering will be limited to about a dozen people, so that I will have the opportunity to listen well to each of you. The gatherings will include refreshments or a meal. I have already started these gatherings with some groups and committees, and the time together has proven to be very fruitful. Please call or email the church office to sign up for one of the following: Tuesday, August 6, 6:00 pm Hosts: Scott and Sarah Findley Monday, August 12, 5:30 pm Hosts: Craig and Trista Boudreaux Tuesday, August 27, 6:00 pm Hosts: Jeff and Angelia Sims Sunday, September 1, 6:00 pm Hosts: Joe and Gayle Shearer With joy, Amy WE ARE LIVE! RENEWAL We Are Family

Well, it has been a busy second quarter for the OGUMC Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels Ministries. With the children out of school for the summer, there have been more families in need of groceries.

During April, May and June the Food Pantry served a total of 234 families with approximately 900 family members. While it has been a challenge, we are blessed to be able to assist our neighbors who find themselves struggling to put food on the table for their families.

Meals on Wheels has been growing in the last few months. During the second quarter of this

year, we have delivered hot meals twice a week to 41 homes w h o h a v e h om e b o u n d individuals or families. In total, we delivered approximately 700 meals to our recipients. What a joy to watch their faces light up when we come knocking on the door.

As always, we would like to thank you for your love and continued support of our church ministries. If you think you might hear the call to serve the less fortunate, we would appreciate it so much. If you could volunteer one morning a month at the Food Pantry or deliver hot meals to the disabled or homebound folks, it would be wonderful! Judith Biggert

Hello and Happy Back-to-School! I am truly flabbergasted that it is already time for us to go back to school! Our youth summer has flown by in the blink of an eye! In case you missed it, this summer the OGUMC youth group participated in two youth camps—Base Camp, a mission service camp here in Hattiesburg and Student Life Camp, a worship camp in Sevierville, TN! It was a wonderful time of spiritual growth, fun fellowship and service all around. Along with camp, we had several “Sunday Fundays” and “Service Sundays” where we packed rice and beans, had messy games that included a condiment war, and so much more! Our Kickoff to School event will be on August 4, and we will be having our third annual COLOR WAR! If any upcoming youth would like to participate, they are more than welcome! I suggest bringing a white shirt that can be thrown away or used stained, a towel, and a change of

clothes! Possibly even a swimsuit! Finally, on Sunday, August 11, we will not have youth group the night after Renewal because we will have a very important parent meeting from 4-5 pm! This Parent/Youth Council meeting will cover the studies we will be looking at

this fall, sign-ups for meal provisions for this coming school year, as well as discussing some different plans and events coming up this school year! I hope you can make every effort to be there, whether a parent of a youth or a volunteer!

I am looking forward to a wonderful school year with these youth! Grace and Peace,

Lauren

PS: Thank you for all the prayers and well-wishes after my diagnostic surgery! I am healing well and hope to be back among you very soon!

Youth

Summer will soon be coming to an end and school will be starting in just a few days. We will kick off the new year with our annual Promotion Sunday Breakfast on Sunday, August 4. Parents, please bring your children to the FLC when you arrive for Sunday School. The kids will meet with their teachers and enjoy breakfast before going to their classrooms. We have several new Sunday School teachers joining the team. Our teachers this year: Preschool-Grace Dickerson, Connie Miles, and Gloria Bynum; K/1st Grade-Cindy Smith, Kim Morgan; 2nd/3rd Grade-Sandra Scardino, Malloree Beck; 4th/5th Grade-Melinda Lucas, Lori Terrill.

Our Wednesday Night Program will begin this year with a new name! We will be referring to it as Wednesday Night J.A.M. (Jesus and Me). One other new addition to Wednesday nights will be our own Riley Barber! She will be sharing her musical talents and expertise with our children. I am so looking forward to beginning our J.A.M. sessions on August 14. Our J.A.M. Leaders: PreK/K-Jan Wilkinson/????; 1st/2nd Grade-Judy Brown, Adelia Powe; 3rd/4th/5th Grade-Lori Terrill, Lisa Vickers, Sarah O’Quinn, Jimmy Burger. 1st-5th Grade will be continuing with their series “What’s In the Bible?” As you can see, we have a great team in place, but we still need one more volunteer for the Pre-K-K class. If you aren’t already involved on Wednesday nights and would like to spend some time sharing Bible Stories and playing with

these precious children, just let me know.

Parents, as we begin this new year, I will be needing your assistance with monitoring the playground between dinner and class starting. (6:00-6:30 pm.) I will also need some assistance with improving our playground in the way of new mulch. We have purchased Jelly Bean mulch, which is a safer rubber mulch that does not hold heat and should last for a very long time. Once we have a date of when we can get the equipment in to move the mulch, I will be contacting some of you to come and help spread it. I am really excited about getting this year started. We have a wonderful group of faithful volunteers that I am so thankful for. So, as we begin this new year, please, as always, be in prayer for our children’s ministry. Pray for our kids as they begin a new school year and pray for the parents, teachers, and leaders so that we may help provide them a firm foundation and an unshakeable faith to build their lives upon. In His Service,

Kaycee

Hospitality Creed

Since hospitality means “love of a guest” and since Jesus said, “I was a stranger and you took me in,” I will always remember to…

Welcome others, especially the guest,

as though I was welcoming Jesus.

Receive no one merely as a stranger,

but rather as a dear friend.

Demonstrate through every means

available that my new friends are valued and an integral part of our fellowship.

I gladly join with others at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in affirming hospitality as an integral part of the Christian witness.

“Freely you have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:8
