Sturgis Sales Tax Revenues & Construction Costs show positive trend

Via City of Sturgis—For the time period beginning July 17th and end-ing August 11th, all pyrotechnic and firework displays (both indoor and outdoor) are banned within City limits due to the unacceptably high fire and safety risk.

Community News

Via SEDC: SEDC and the City of Sturgis, along with parties inter-ested in providing extensive childcare services, continue to ex-plore options to address the childcare and pre-kindergarten needs of our community. Over the next three years, 217 new housing units in four resi-dential developments are planned for Sturgis. With this growth will come an increased demand for childcare services. Under consideration is a large facility that would provide full time, year round certified care for infants and children 6 weeks old and up. If you, or someone you know, are interested in providing childcare services, please contact Pat at 347-4906 or [email protected].

Via SEDC: The City of Sturgis re-ports the following sales tax rev-enues through May. These num-bers are impressive since the first months of a new year are gener-ally the slowest for retail sales. The increased number of inquir-ies and walk-in traffic handled by the Chamber, the heightened vehicle traffic throughout town,

and the increasing number of retailers indicate that these reve-nues should continue to trend upward through 2015. Through June, new construction costs and permit fees are up while the number of building permits are down. Though there have been fewer issued, the con-struction projects are larger. The

new Dolan Creek Estates residen-tial development project will be included in the July report, which should increase the construction costs an additional $3+ million, further topping all recent City construction costs. The culmination of these figures is good economic news for the Sturgis community. 2015 2014 General 2% Sales Tax Revenue $468,060.87 $433,361.02 +8% (through May) $ 72,365.01 $ 70,771.44 +2.2% # of Building Permits 294 319 - 25 Construction Costs $9,410,859 $8,543,501 +10% Permit Fees $ 77, 349 $ 39,891 +193% (through June)
