Thank you to our members that were able to attend the recent meeting for Truckers Against Trafficking. Law enforcement agencies represented at the meet-ing included FBI, Homeland Security, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Sioux Falls police, and the Mitch-ell police. It is hard to hear the stories from the law enforcement agencies and from a victim of sex trafficking and not be moved. It certainly creates a greater sense of conviction that we are doing the right thing by endorsing this effort and I want to

thank everyone in our association for supporting this cause. I also don’t want to see this as a “flavor of the month”. This is a cause that we need to continue to champion. For those attending our annual convention, you will get to hear a presentation from the TAT director and I know you will be interested in what she has to say. AnnuAl SDTA ConvenTion Time iS upon uS! Wow, it is hard to believe that my term as Chairman is coming to a close. It has been my sincere honor to represent our great members for the past 2-years and a role that I have taken seriously. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of mem-bers, Board members, Executive Committee members and great office staff. I hope that part of my legacy with SDTA is that we are focused on membership growth for the benefit of SDTA and all the members we represent. There are a lot of people that have been involved with SDTA for many years and there are many new members that will receive the benefit of all those years of hard work. Part of my focus and efforts have been with that mindset. Many of our lobbying efforts, especially on a national level take years to play out and I think we as a group have done a good job staying focused and keeping our eye on the big issues. We may be a small state but we have gained a fairly strong voice and that is a credit to all of you. I will save the remainder of my remarks for the annual convention. Once again, I am sure Myron and the SDTA staff have another wonderful convention lined up and I hope you can make it. I am confident it will be time well spent and a great opportunity to recognize a lot of different people for their outstanding efforts so be sure to mark your calendars and I hope to see many of you in Rapid City on September 3, 4 and 5. Mike Habek will be coming on board as our new Chairman, and I know we will be in good hands. Thank you all for a great 2-years as Chair and I wish all our members and SDTA as a whole a very prosperous future!

The SDTA’s 79th Annual Convention is just around the corner. We are scheduled for September 3rd through the 5th (Wednesday through Friday) at the Rushmore Plaza Holi-day Inn in Rapid City. If you have not yet registered for the convention, please do that as soon as you can. We have a great list of speakers, seminars and entertainment. Semi-nars include an update on the health care program commonly referred to as “Obama Care” and a seminar on Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT), a program we endorsed a

couple of years ago. You will hear the good and bad stories from the #2 in command at TAT, Ms. Kylla Leeburg.

Convention attendees will also have a chance to hear from the Deputy Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMC-SA). Mr. Bill Bonrott hopefully will address what is on the horizon with FMCSA and how that agency will have a continued effect on the trucking industry. Since Administrator Anne Ferro resigned, we have not heard much about a replacement or about any possible change in direction for the agency. All of these sessions are a “must see”.

All of the education opportunities offered at the convention are oppor-tunities that members cannot get anywhere else but at the SDTA Annual Convention. As always, in addition to educational opportunities, the con-vention also provides a special time and venue to network with others in the trucking industry that face issues similar to the ones you face. We also leave time for attendees to have some fun through entertainment and our golf outing.

On Friday evening, Chairman Rick Hoogendoorn will be passing the gavel to Mr. Mike Habeck who will be starting his two-year term as SD-TA’s Chairman of the Board. After the conclusion of activities and events of Friday evening, the convention will end. This schedule will allow ev-eryone to leisurely travel home on Saturday or spend some quality time visiting the Black Hills of South Dakota.

After you review the entire agenda as it appears in this edition of the Trucking News, I am sure you will find that the 2014 Convention is a “must attend.” I look forward to seeing many of you in Rapid City next month!

Remember, the world is run by those that show up and participate!

I know everyone read Chairman Rick Hoogendoorn’s article in July address-ing the driver shortage issue nationwide. Ironically we have witnessed and expressed our concern for the last five years on this topic. It has now become a real issue in our industry and there shows to be no quick fix to the problem.

However through some discussions with Jim Neiman, Tom Shaffer, Dan Buehler and Dave Brenneisen it is felt that we can succeed with the fleet we

have if we just show a little creativity. Number one, which always seems like a no brainer, is to do everything you can to be loaded in each direction. I know that this sounds easier than what it can be at times, especially when logging contractors get possessive of their trucks. Try to trade loads if at all possible. Number two, maximize your hours of service. If you still have hours to use toward the end of the day, but not enough time to return to your normal job, find a shorter load. Thanks to John Skvicalo a list of logging contractors with their load count is published each week. This was an excellent idea! Number three, lets be creative and think outside of the box. A bonus system has been established with achievable goals for everyone of 200 hours per month. As it has been my experience with any bonus system, it is always set on the minimum requirements needed from everyone. This it is just a little extra incentive — the real reward is in your paycheck.

We have witnessed something since March that I believe has not ever happened before —three mills temporarily shut down repeatedly because of not enough inventory to keep them operat-ing. This is the time of the year we should be on quotas and on limited work schedules. No one should ever be asked or expected to exceed hours of service, however we need to maximize our hours. We need to encourage and expect the same from all our coworkers as well. We are now entering the time of the year that we not only need to keep the mills running at full capacity, but also start building up the inventory for the spring break. To put it very simply, it is not in anyone’s best interest to have a repeat of the last year! We need to do everything within our power to make sure that it does not happen. We have a lot of good leaders. Now is the time to put those skills to use and lead by example and encouragement.

In our meeting, Jim Neiman was very concerned about moral and attitude. For that reason I would like to share an inspirational quote —

You’ve done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective, unstop-pable determination.

The Salty SixMaking better food choices for a better life

By Sanford Center for Health and Well-being

Sometimes the simplest choices can make all the difference, especially when it comes to your health. And one of the best places to start is your diet. With just a few small changes, you can start on a path to a healthier you.

One of the simplest adjustments you can make is by choosing foods and snacks with a lower sodium content. Every day many Americans consume more than the recommended 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium. This can lead to an increased risk of hypertension, heart disease and stroke. Not only do increased sodium levels lead to long-term health issues, but they also affect your physical appearance. An excessive intake of salt can cause puffiness in the eyes and face, swelling in the fingers and bloating.

And simply passing on the salt shaker isn’t enough to bring those daily sodium levels down. On average, 75 percent of your salt intake comes from processed and restaurant foods. The American Heart Association came out with the “Salty Six” campaign. Its goal is to raise awareness of foods found in a typical American diet that are top sources for sodium. The Salty Six include: breads and rolls, cold cuts and cured meats, pizza, poultry, soup and sandwiches.

Next time you are in the grocery store, pay attention to what you are putting in your cart. Be an informed consumer and check the sodium levels on nutrition labels before buying a product. Then as you go about preparing your meals for the day, try to keep each one within the range of 400 to 500mg of sodium. Another easy way to monitor your sodium intake is to treat the 2,300mg recommended sodium allowance like a budget. If you eat a meal high in sodium, make sure to balance it out by keeping your sodium intake lower for the rest of the day. When in doubt, check with a registered dietitian to help you figure out your individual sodium needs.

Like with most things in life, moderation is key. So be mindful of your daily sodium levels to ensure a well-balanced diet and to keep your body working properly and to its fullest poten-tial.

international registration plan (irp) updateFull reciprocity plan: On January 1, 2015, the new IRP Full Reciprocity Plan (FRP) goes into effect. This major change to the Plan impacts the distance reporting and registration authority for all inter-state motor carriers registered under IRP including new and expanded operations. Cab cards for both first-time registrants and renewing carriers will display all jurisdictions and the vehicle’s appropriate registration weight.

This change, the most far-reaching since the IRP first went into effect, will give most interstate carriers more operational flexibility than they have had in the past. The FRP will reduce the number of permits carriers have needed to buy and fees they have paid for added states. IRP registrants renewing for an effective date of January 1, 2015 and beyond will be registered under FRP as will any new registrants registering for the first time on January 1, 2015 or after. For example, a carrier whose current registrations expire on March 31, 2015, they will renew under FRP effective April 1, 2015.

For many years the reporting of estimated distance for first time registrants and expanded operations has been a challenge in IRP. Many options have been explored over the years to address this matter and with the passing of the FRP Ballot, the membership has approved the concept of “Full Reciprocity” to simplify the process. The FRP changes how distance and registration fees for first-time registrants are determined and it also eliminates the estimating of distance for expanded operations of existing carriers.

First-time registrants will pay fees based on the base jurisdiction’s average per vehicle distance chart. Renewing carriers will pay fees based solely on their actual operations during the distance reporting period.

This change will ultimately benefit the SDTA membership, as it eliminates the requirement for existing carriers to pay fees over 100% when adding jurisdictions during the registration period or expanding their operations into jurisdictions where they had no actual operations during the distance reporting period.

To learn more about FRP and how it impacts you, information including a questions and answers document, is available on the IRP website at http://www.irponline.org/?page=Fullreciprocity.

For additional information, visit the IRP website at www.irponline.org. This website provides resources for carriers to find juris-dictional specific requirements, IRP registration fees data and information on many other topics.
