On July 19th and 20th, the annual Old Scot Invitational was held and what a great event it was! For those that don't know, the Old Scot is the premier men’s golf event at T&C. Members and their guests play five nine hole matches against other members and their guests over a two day period.
The winners of the five nine hole matches (flight winners) move onto the "shootout" where one's nerves can really be put to the test (especially with around 100 people watching you!). Congratulations to all flight winners and especially to member Gary Locke and his guest, J.B. Lloyd, who won the "shootout" and the 2013 Old Scot Invitational. What really impresses me about the Old Scot is how all aspects of Town & Country come together to make this a first class event. Our golf pro, Ryan Rindels, and the entire T&C golf staff have thought through every detail to make this a truly unique golf experience - including having a bagpiper on the first tee. The Clubhouse does a great job of taking care of the participants including great food and drink and even better service. Lastly, the golf course is in fabulous shape and special recognition should go to Bill Larson, Turfgrass Director, and his team for their efforts this year. It has been a challenging year on the golf course with our poor spring weather and our ongoing bunker project. We are very lucky to have the talents of Bill and his team to give us one of the finest golf courses in the Twin Cities. The next big event at T&C is our Derby Days weekend which will run from Thursday, August 15th through Saturday, August 17th. Derby Days kicks-off Thursday with a Par 3 golf tournament which is open to all members. The fun continues at the party on the top of the driving range after golf which is an "All in White" themed event. Friday and Saturday of Derby Days includes various golf and tennis events for juniors, women and men and culminates on Saturday night with a Luau Party at the Pool. The Luau Party is open to all adult members and is one of the few nights of the year where the Pool is open past sunset. Derby Days is really focused on events that our members will enjoy and I hope that you can find time to participate in some of the fun things going on at T&C during Derby Days weekend. See you at the Club! Tom

Pool Parties During the months of June and July the Pool is just too busy with swim lessons, swim team and member use to allow us the flexibility to host events at the Pool. However, August is
a different story. It gets slower during the month of August, which enables us to permit small-to-medium sized events. So, put your thinking caps on and see what little soiree you could have at the Pool and give us a call. Allergy Alert Wristbands The number of adults and children with food allergies have doubled in recent years with the most prevalent of allergies being peanuts. Adults easily speak up and inform the staff of their allergies, but children often forget to and the result could be serious. In order to avoid this possibility, we have purchased two types of Allergy Alert Wristbands that children can wear that will alert staff. The wrist bands are available at the Front Desk for a cost of $8.00 each. Camp Country Club Yes, it’s that time of year! Make your reservations now for this can’t miss event. All children will receive a special Camp Survival Kit and all adults will receive Special Camp Guidelines that will ensure fun is had by all. Pitch your tent next to the Creek on #4 beginning at 6:00pm. Dinner will be cooked and served creek side beginning at 7:00pm, followed by organized games, and a bonfire with s’mores. Wake up to a hot breakfast and the sprinklers! Just kidding about the sprinklers! Club and Family Pictures In the next couple of weeks, you will receive information announcing our Club Member Photo Album project. We have arranged for Club Services of America, one of the nation's premier photography companies, to photograph you and your family at the Club. They will contact you directly to schedule your session. Photography will take place between September 4
th and September 22
nd. There
is no cost for the Club photograph. Images will be shown to you immediately following your session and if you are pleased, you may purchase portraits at that time. Lost Something? It is just amazing how fast our Lost & Found boxes become full once school is out. Where are lost items taken? Items left at the Pool are taken to the Pool Office and placed in a large blue bin. Items left in the Clubhouse are brought to the Front Desk and placed in a cabinet for safe keeping. All expensive items such as watches and rings are brought to my office. After a day I bring them to a pawn shop…only kidding! At the end of the summer season all items in lost & found are given to Goodwill. I encourage you to take a moment to look through the bins for that item you just can’t find. You might just discover it has been here all the time.

Club Length vs. Playability
All of your clubs can be adjusted for length, including your putter(s), wedges, irons and hybrids.
The length of your hybrids, irons, and wedges has a direct impact on their playability and the distance you hit them. Extending an iron by 1/2” to 1” can result in 5 to 10 more yards on the course. Or if you find yourself hitting thin iron and/or wedge shots, a longer club will help you get the club head down to the ball and enhance impact, resulting in better distance and accuracy. Irons can be shortened 1/2” to 1” if control is an issue or if you hit an overabundance of fat shots. To see if this will help, choke down and see if contact improves.
Putters can also be adjusted for length. If you tend to hunch over the ball and choke down on the putter grip, customize the length by having the length shortened. For those with back issues, a longer putter will allow you to stand more upright over the ball and take some pressure off your back.
Whether you have a club extended or shortened, the idea is to make better contact with the ball. More shots in which the ball flies off the middle of the clubface, even with the putter. By improving on-center hits, you will automatically improve your shot making overall.
Men’s Derby Qualifying The Men’s Derby will be held on Saturday, September 14
th, at 10:00am. This is always a
fun event that matches the 18 players with the Lowest Net scores of the year against one an-other in a 9-hole shootout format to determine the Champion. Typically a net score of 67 or below is needed to qualify, but it has gone as low as net 65. Players with potential qualifying scores should bring their signed and member-attested scorecard into The Golf Shop to post their score. Qualifying scores will be accepted through Sunday, August 25
th.

Town & Country Club 2013 Ladies Bridge
With summer weather finally here, the 18-Hole Women golfers have been enjoying some great golf, tournaments, and guest days. First of all, a hearty thanks to Nora McGuire for planning and executing another successful “Rally ‘Fore’ The Cure.” $4,500 was raised for this worthy cause! This year, T&CC was well represented
in the Northland Women’s Invitational held in Duluth on July 14
th -16
th. The course proved to be just as challenging as our
own course. And, congratulations to two flight winners from our league—Jennifer Berg took (1
st place) and Kathleen Lynch
(2nd
place) in their respective flights. Ladies—plan ahead to attend next year’s Invitational (July 13
th-15
th, 2014).
Ladies’ Night Out with the theme, “Golf is a Holiday,” held on July 17
th turned
out to be quite the “Holiday”—just a different kind of Holiday. The ladies had a blast celebrating such Holidays as “National Backward Day,” “National Be Nasty Day,” “National Be a Million-aire Day,” and “National Repeal Day,” to name just a few as we golfed our way through the 9-Hole Scramble. A great big thanks to Jeanne Dolan for surprising all of us with a “Ladies’ Night Out to be Remembered.” The 27-Hole Partners’ Event was held on July 23
rd with a field of 16 teams and
a very close finish.
Please enjoy the group photo below. Congrats to all the winners: First Place Team: Kathy Hanousek & Marsha Ritt Second Place Team: Ann Trenda & Schelly Vaaler Third Place Teams (Three-way Tie): Jennifer Berg & Erin Delaney, Judy Brink & Kate Dienhart, and Deb Cornell & Mary Cay Miller Hope your calendars are marked for the Club Championship on August 6
th & 7
th and the “Bring-A-Friend Day” on August
13th.
Happy golfing as we wind down our fantastic season, Debbie Rowland 18-Hole League President

August is the peak of summer and also a time for a dizzying array of outdoor gatherings. Nearly all of us are invited to attend some form of picnic or reunion or pool party that invariably involves a host of delicious summertime food favorites. One common player in nearly all these gatherings is the universal favorite, watermelon. I read a recent article at EatingWell.com that listed some very interesting nutritional facts I would like to share about America’s third favorite fruit.
Citrillus lanatus, the domesticated watermelon, is related to gourds and squashes and is America’s third most-consumed fresh fruit - at almost 14 pounds per person per year – after bananas (26 pounds) and apples (17pounds). More than 1,200 varieties are grown worldwide, with China producing 70 percent of the global crop. Flesh can range from white to yellow to pink. Triploid hybrids or seedless varieties are quickly driving the old standards out of the major food retailers. Watermelon averages 40% more of the cancer fighter lycopene per serving than tomatoes. The benefit of watermelon is that its lycopene is bioavailable without cooking, unlike that in tomatoes, and is relatively stable when the fruit is stored and refrigerated. A 1 cup serving of watermelon also provides 10% of the daily value for vitamin A, 12% of the daily value for vitamin C, along with B6, beta carotene, thiamin and potassium. That same single cup serving also contains only 46 calories, 0.2g total fat, 11 carbohydrates, 0.6g fiber and 12mg of vitamin C. Low fat levels and nutritional benefits are not the only positive health benefits provided by this wonder fruit. Watermelon contains amino acids arginine and citrulline, which benefit the cardiovascular system and are popular supplements with weight lifters. Citrulline from watermelon is the active ingredient in Stimulin, a natural libido enhancer for men. Not yet published USDA research confirms citrulline’s Viagra like effects, and if that is still not enough incentive for you to gorge on this summer beauty there is always that fabulously refreshing taste to fall back on. Speaking of watermelon...check out the pictures below of our annual watermelon eating contest at the T&C 4th of July Party!
