August Gardening Calendar
Prepare
Plan beds for bulbs. Order Tulips, Hyacinths, Dutch Iris, Daffodils, Narcissus, and Amaryllis.
Prepare beds for October planting by adding compost or leaf mold.
Plant
Daylilies in a sunny location, they will be well established before winter.
Divide and transplant Louisiana Iris, Easter Lily, Canna, Liriope, Ajuga, and Shasta Daisy.
Plant cool season vegetables: Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Spinach, Potatoes,
Lettuce, Carrots, Beets, Radishes, and English Peas. Plant warm season grasses: Buffalo, Bermuda, and
St. Augustine.
Mums should be planted for September bloom and fall color.
Marigolds, Asters, Zinnias, and Celosia can be planted to replace faded annuals.
Plant seeds of Calendula, Columbine, English Daisy, Forget-me-not, Pansy, Sweet William, and Vio-
let.
Fertilize
If acid loving plants including Azaleas, Camelias, and Gardenia show signs of chlorosis (yellowing of
leaves), a treatment of Iron Chelate should cause leaves to regain their green color.
Feed mums with a complete fertilizer every two weeks and water thoroughly until buds show color.
Prune
Cut back annuals such as Impatiens and Vinca to encourage fall blooms.
Disbud Camellias, Dahlias, and Chrysanthemums to produce specimen blooms.
Continue to remove dead heads in the garden to stimulate blooming.
Cut back rose canes to 24-30 inches from ground for autumn blooms.
Remove dead and damaged wood from trees and shrubs.
Water
Water garden deeply, but infrequently throughout the month.
Water early in the morning or in late afternoon. Water on leaves during the hot of the day can cause the
sun to burn leaves.
Potted plants and hanging baskets need to be watered daily.
Make sure Azaleas and Camelias stay well watered, because they are forming flower buds for next
year.
Miscellaneous
Mow weekly and leave clippings on the lawn.
Turn compost pile.
Feed the birds.
In Bloom
Ageratum, Angel's Trumpet, Balsam, Begonia, Browallia, Caladium, Canna, Celosia, Clematis, Dahlia,
Four-o'clock, Funkia, Gladiolus, Lily, Hosta, Impatiens, Marigold, Periwinkle, Phlox, Portulaca, Rattle
Box, Salvia, Snow-on-the-mountain, Torenia, Vinca, Pink Zephyranthes lily, Zinnia, Althea, Butterfly
Bush, Crape myrtle, Hydrangea, Oleander, Roses, and Tamarisk.

Fall Fun Fest at Osage Beach City Park, Saturday, September 7
2 Dam Days at Beaver’s at the Dam in Lake Ozark, Sunday, September 29

you wish. No prior experience with LOWA is necessary. We will teach you what to say about the

Missouri Master Gardener Association (MOMGA)
Missouri Master Gardener Association is a statewide independent organization formed to ensure the continuance
and support of the MU Extension’s Master Gardener program. Membership is open to any active Missouri Master
Gardener.
MOMGA’s State Board plans to meet four times a year. The next State Board Meeting will take place during the
Missouri MG State Conference in Springfield, MO.
The Lake Area Master Gardener Club paid Missouri Master Gardener Association 2013 basic membership dues
for thirty-six club members.
If you aren’t a member of the LAMG Club, you can still join MOMGA. Visit their website, www.momga.org, for
membership information. In addition to the yearly basic membership ($2.00), there are three levels of lifetime
membership offered. The lifetime memberships provide additional benefits. Check out those benefits on their
website.
Also on Missouri Master Gardener Association’s website you can locate information concerning various Master
Gardener events happening around the state. Twenty-five Master Gardener Chapters have joined MOMGA.
Lake Area Master Gardener information is listed on the East Central Region page for Miller County and on
the West Central Region page for Camden County. When MU reorganized the Extension Regions for the state,
Miller and Camden Counties were placed in different regions. The reorganization was effective January 1, 2013.
Hi! I am the new chair for the Garden Walk and would like to go look at the 3 gardeners, gardens I have
who volunteered for next year. I need some help to do this and I also would like to find a garden in the
Camdenton area. So if you know of someone let me know.
I have one garden in Roach, one on Bear Paw off hwy 5 and one off Hwy 5 east of Camdenton. So I figured
one in the Camdenton area near hwy 5 would be a nice continuation.
But right now I need a couple people to go with me to assess the three I have and someone who can write up a
nice description of the gardens.
I would like to do this in the next 2 weeks if possible. So please all answer this plea for some help now to get
this part done and out of the way. With all of your help I am sure next year will be a fantastic year for the
Walk.
Thank you, Gail Conavay 573-286-5064

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT on Glenda Hinrichs I am a retired educator. I taught Kindergarten, Early Childhood and Early Childhood Special
Education. I now work part time during the school year in the Camdenton School District. I am the
site coordinator for the Camdenton Afterschool Program at Osage Beach Elementary.
Dan and I have been married for 45 years. We have three sons, Marc,
Chad and Adam. All three sons are married but have not presented us
with any grandchildren yet! We have 3 granddogs and 3 grandcats!
We have a Wire Haired Pointing Griffon named Josie that is 12 years
old. We have a new puppy named Molly that is four months old. She is a
Soft Coated Wheaten. Josie is not too pleased with her new sister!
We have lived at the lake for 9 years. We retired here from Lee’s
Summit, Mo. Dan retired from the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas
City. I retired from the Lee’s Summit School District.
Dan has always loved motorcycles and we belonged to the “Harley” club
until Dan fell and injured his heel.
I have been coming to the lake since I was a baby. We built our home on the lot my dad purchased
from Willmore in 1964. We rocked our lot instead of trying to grow grass as I knew as we aged we
would not be able to take care of a lawn. I have been planting areas of the lot with shrubs and
perennials since before we moved to the lake. I hope to eventually have my own “Botanical Garden” !
I love to garden and whenever I can I spend the first two hours of the day working outside. I love all
types of gardens and my favorite garden is usually the one that I am currently in! When we moved to
the lake and I saw the ad for the Master Gardener class I knew that was what I wanted to do. I have
always loved gardening but teaching and raising a family left little time to garden. The Lake Area
Master Gardeners Club has given me a whole new group of friends who share the same interests that I
have. I love learning from other members and visiting their gardens!
PAGE 8 LAKE AREA MASTER GARDERN’S LEWS LETTER
The regular meeting of the Lake Area Master Gardeners was held at
Willmore Lodge in Lake Ozark on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 6:30 PM.
President Jan Mitzel called the meeting to order. 18 members and one guest were present. Three of the five Board
Members were present.
Debbie Laemmli introduced the speaker, Paula Diaz. Paula gave an excellent presentation on Green
Roofs. To see an example in our area visit the Conservation Office in Jefferson City. At least one of
our Master Gardeners helped plant the roof!
Shirley Hirner won the door prize, a gnome for the garden. Rita Burks made a motion to approve the
June minutes. It was seconded by Mickey McDuffey. The motion was approved.
Jan Mitzel read the Treasurer’s report. Ending balance was $10,050.17. Mickey McDuffey made a motion to
approve the report. Ginnie Boyle seconded the motion. The motion was approved.
Glenda Hinrichs reported $75 from the Garden Walk will be donated to the Ozark Brush and Palette Club for their
scholarship fund.
Mildred Webster, Ways and Means, has gloves available for purchase.
Shirley Hirner, Historian, will bring the album with photos of the Garden Walk to the next meeting.
Winnie McKinley passed out the ID cards for MOMGA to active members. Members attending the state
conference will need to take these with them.
Winnie sent out an email with forms to order shirts, t-shirts, and/or sweatshirts. Members need to order by
August 13th to have shirts in time for the state conference in September. On the color sheet, hover your mouse
over the color square and the name of the color will come up. You may email your order. Make your check
out to Miller County Extension and mail the check to Margie or Winnie. You can also place and pay for your
order at the next LAMG garden meeting on August 13th.
Winnie needs people to sign up for hosting the LAMG classes this fall.
We will be starting a new buy/sale/trade column in the monthly newsletter. Please limit listings to garden related
items such as plants, seeds, Master Gardener shirts, etc.
Gail Conavay has volunteered to chair the Garden Walk for 2014. She is looking for gardens in the Camdenton
area. Please contact Gail if you wish to be on the Garden Walk committee or know of a garden for the Walk. Gail is
looking for someone to be in charge of publicity and another person to be in charge of
demonstrations.
Thank you to the Progressive Dinner/Garden Walk Hostesses, Jeannie, Debbie, and Patty.
We saw a variety of gardens including vegetables grown in containers by the lake, native
plantings used in large areas, and a mixture of natives and cultivars. The food was delicious!
Great day for the 7 members that attended! We need volunteers for next year’s event!
Mark your calendars for September 7th. It is the Osage Beach Fall Festival. Winnie and Phyllis are
in charge. They will be sending out a sign up list to work the booth.
September 20th through the 22nd is the State Conference in Springfield, Mo. This is a great opportunity for
Advanced Training. Seven members at the meeting showed interest in attending.
We need everyone to consider the possibility of taking an active role in our club next year. We especially need
members to step up to President and Vice President positions.
Jan Mitzel adjourned the meeting. 45 minutes for general education and 45 minutes for service for those attending
the meeting. Next meeting at Glenda Hinrichs home at 6:30 on Tuesday, August 13th.
If you have news items pictures of your gardens, projects, special plants, or want
to share your favorite garden tips just let me know!!
Please submit items by the 20th of the month so I can post them in our Monthly
Newsletter! Send to Charli Allee at 242 Siesta Circle, Camdenton, MO
65020 or e-mail: [email protected]
