Hello and welcome to the Summer edition of the

WN4 Local Link.

The summer holidays are now in full swing and for me that means a quiet commute to

and from work, allowing more time to spend in my haven, my colourful garden. Opening a bottle of Prosecco pre 6pm is my little secret guilty pleasure and one I have adopted well!

Most of us will be enjoying the Olympics, even if the most energetic exercise we do is to fi ll the chips & dips prior to the men’s 100 metres, or is that just me? Trying to keep the kids entertained this summer will be an Olympic challenge in itself.

For those still undecided of a little break away, why not take a look at this months day tripping article, St. Ives (Page 12). Our very own Cornish riviera and somewhere that we thoroughly enjoy. This is a holiday destination not to be overlooked.

If you are staying local have a nosey at our what’s on guide (Page 22) and don’t forget the Ashton Festival (Page 14) for some great local summer events and activities for all.

Have a great summer...

Sarah.WN4 Local Link Editor.

Always Ashton is the strap line adopted recently by the hundreds of independent traders in Ashton.

Always Ashton will be the two words that the group hope will inspire the public into keeping our delightful town afl oat and encourage new shoppers to come into the town.

The group initially intend to hold fortnightly meetings, which will be open to all the traders in Ashton, moving to monthly meetings once things are up and running. Traders will be getting together to think of different events and incentives to bring people back to the town, time and time again.

Free parking every day for over 100 cars on the market on Garswood Street with further spaces at other sites around the town is obviously the town’s biggest draw, as most towns now charge for parking and the group feel this is a massive advantage into getting new shoppers into the town.

Another advantage of the town is that it boasts such a varied collection of trades, almost everything you need is available and all within a short walk of the bus stop, or the free car parking.

Always Ashton, as far as the enthusiastic traders are concerned, is going to keep shoppers answering the question of where they choose to shop, “Always Ashton”.

If you are a trader in Ashton and are interested in getting involved, then please contact RichardAylett on 01942 272 978 or 07779 281 478.

Always Ashton now has a face book page just simply search “Always Ashton”.

THOUSANDS of women in Wigan joined the biggest fi ght against cancer by taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at the Haigh Hall on Sunday 20th May.

Toddlers, teenagers and twenty-somethings joined together with mums, grans, aunties, friends and workmates in a spectacular array of fairy wings, feather boas and fancy dress in every shade of pink imaginable.

Now organisers are saying a heart-felt ‘thanks’ to everyone who took part - and urging them to return their sponsorship money to fund vital research into 200 types of cancer.

Laura Taylor, Race for Life event manager for Wigan, said: “Race for Life in Wigan was a fantastic event and we are so very grateful to everyone who took part or supported our participants, as well as the wonderful volunteers who helped make the event happen.

“Now the big day is over, we are asking our supporters to take one last step – by returning the money they’ve raised so it can go into vital research to help more men, women and children survive cancer.”

“Many people don’t realise that their entry fee only covers the cost of the event. It’s the sponsorship money that really makes a difference.”

But research is expensive so Cancer Research UK needs the people of Wigan to help raise £65,000from their Race for Life event to support it.

Laura continued: “So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible. It can be paid in online, by phone, or by cheque.”

Fancy staying on home soil this summer, then look no further than St. Ives. Some say our very own Cornish Rivera, with tropical beaches that stretch for miles & where nautical is the staple dress code.

With a fabulous range of places to stay, from camping in the centrally positioned AyrCampsite (www. ayrholidaypark.co.uk) overlooking Porthmeor beach, to one of the many holiday cottages (www.thesaillofts.co.uk)scattered the length and breadth of this fantastic fi shing town, you will be spoilt for choice.

Restaurants in St. Ives sees visitors coming from miles around to taste the culinary delights

in many of the independent restaurants. Booking is essential in most of these eateries especially during the peak season. “Harbour Fish & Chips” is positioned right on the sea front, where you can order gourmet style fi sh and chips and wash it down with a cold glass of wine out of the reach of the seagulls! Or, why not try the “Onshore Café” where rustic pizzas are cooked in authentic pizza ovens served the way the Italians intended.

After a day spent walking along the Coastal path, or on one of the fi ve beaches why not indulge in a traditional cream tea…with such a large choice of quaint cafes and bakeries all tucked away down the winding cobbled streets you will no doubt make this a daily treat. Why not try Bumbles Tea Room.

Life boat launch takes place every Wednesday teatime and is a great event for the kids. Or, you can be the skipper of your own boat with boat hire available from St. Ives harbour. If fi shing is more your thing try mackerel fi shing, or a trip to seal island.

s much as I love snuggling up with the kids in front of a warm cosy fi re, this is not what I planned for the whole of the summer.

So, to help coax the sun out and to stop any chances of my vibrant children slowly driving me mad, we bought a tent. I immediately had visions of my family running through the fi elds, singing around a campfi re and toasting marshmallows. That vision lasted all of 2 minutes, those lovely thoughts were shattered when I discovered that the car was too full for the marshmallows.I only just got the Kids in.

I’m usually such an effi cient packer (Chanel lipstick that doubles as blusher and acts as a skin soother!), or so I thought. My camping list looked something like this; Tent, cooker, bedding, cot, highchair, pushchair, day chair, Baileys bike, Baileys dinasours, bucket & spade, my clothes, his clothes, their clothes for both wet weather,

warm weather, food for BBQ’s, beans, beans and beans, plus Poppy’s baby food!

The sun shone for the whole weekend and we didn’t even mind the 5am morning call from the birds quickly followed by the kids! The kids loved having the freedom and we managed to relax knowing they couldn’t do too much damage. The fresh air and early mornings wiped them out each night, allowing me some quality time with my hubby. We sat drinking Chateauneuf-du-pape in plastic glasses reminiscing about white linen sheets and a fully loaded mini bar in our pre-children days!

That said we had a great weekend and the fi rst thing I plan to do when we get home is ship the kids off to Grandma’s for an extended holidayand for me, well I’ll beindulging in those white linen sheets, inspecting the mini bar somewhere where wellies are not needed and Chanel is mandatory!

I amped up my preppy style last month with a trip to Cape Cod for a friend’s wedding. First stop was Boston for some lobster chowder and a stock pile of all things Abercrombie and Fitch. I have to comment on their impeccable branding - every sensory touch point exuded A&F, from the over zealous welcome greeting to the male fragrance dancing in my nostrils, I must admit it’s a powerful force.

So, later having taken a ‘trolley’ tram ride in the rain I sat in the ‘Cheers’ bar where disappointingly no one knew my name. Glowing in the retail euphoria of my new purchases - a grey marl hoody, navy blue cheer girl cardi and the obligatory of all things preppy - the striped blazer. Fuelled with an authentic American beer I set off to Harvard to explore the ivy-clad surrounds of prestige.Upon arrival in the Cape I had little point of reference beyond a vague recollection of ‘Dawson’s Creek’ combined with the movie ‘Wedding

Crashers’ and of course ‘Gossip Girl’.

In all honesty those cliches were not far off the mark. There were a lot of picket fences and rose clad porches and the swans on the lake did what swans do best - they ‘swanned’. At the church there was a defi nite ‘pond’ divide between the British girls regailed in hats, feathers and fascinators and to the left the Americans gals wearing no such frivolity.

Back at the resort, the men wore pebble chinos and navy blazers for wedding dinner rehearsals and the girls wore pastel apricot jeans, Tods loafers and pashminas to the post-wedding brunch. The seafood and champagne abounded and the hospitality was impeccable. I must admit I have been casually knotting my cardigans and draping them nonchalantly over my shoulders ever since. Cape Cod, New England - I salute you.
