Russell Arms ~ a New Era Russell Arms public house in Butlers Cross, a watering hole and coaching house since 1763, is about to embark on a new and exciting era. Neil, Nicola and James, the team behind No2 Pound Street, Wendover, have fought off stiff competition to secure the tenancy. This new start will see this team’s passion, enthusiasm and commitment launch a new concept of pub. “We want to be the hub of the community,” explains Neil, “bringing home the values of old… real food, real ale and great service”. Russell Arms will offer a slice of something for all, be it a pint of milk and a bacon butty for the busy commuter; a midday meeting place for lunch; an afternoon cookery lesson; a great pint after work; a bar snack; or a full blown dinner (or even your wedding!). There will be a village shop providing locally sourced produce including vegetables, milk, bread and cheese, alongside everyday essentials, including tea, coffee and biscuits.

There will even be ingredients for sale to recreate tonight’s meal at home! The team are lining up a spectacular array of real ales from near and far. Some you will already know and others we are sure you will grow to love. For those of you who are already familiar with No2, you will know that supporting British produce is paramount to the ethos. And this will continue over to Russell Arms.

There will be home-grown brands, including Fevertree, Fentimans, Drovers Farm and Bloomberry on the soft drinks front. Commonplace on the bar will be British born gins, vodkas, whiskies and plenty of other interesting tipples. Not to forget, there will, of course, be a real treat with the wine list, and English wines will be a mainstay. This will be no ordinary pub.

And finally… the food! Russell Arms chef, Matthew Hiscoe, is classically trained and has achieved many years service at one of Britain’s culinary institutions serving all things Great and British; WILTONS. Matthew will be creating a menu to travel for, a menu for everyday dining, and a real buzz about local produce. Opening August 2012, and the diary is taking bookings today! Walk an Arm’s Length Sunday 2 September Did you realise that the backbone of Britain's canal system, the Grand Union Canal from London to Birmingham depends on water from Wendover? The main feeder is the Wendover Arm which was built primarily to supply water from the Wendover springs some 6¾ miles away. The Marsworth flight of locks as well as the Wendover and Aylesbury Arms were all closed earlier this year because of the second successive dry winter. The Trust invites your family and friends to "Walk an Arm's length" - a major sponsored walk along the full 6¾ miles of the Wendover Arm on Sunday 2 September starting from Wharf Road, Wendover and finishing at Bulbourne Junction, near Tring. The route is flat and has stunning views. Service personnel from Halton will be marshalling the route and volunteers from Canal & River Trust will be offering tours of Tringford Pumping Station, not open to the public. Refreshments, toilets and activities will be available en route with hot food and a bar at The Grand Junction Arms, Bulbourne. Take a ride aboard a narrow boat from Bulbourne to see the Arm from the water. £10 per adult, accompanied children free. Register online at www.wendoverarmwalk.org.uk or phone 07547 181857

Wendover’s best kept secret There’s something very satisfying about starting a project from scratch and then three months later producing a shining finished product. We’ve all done it at some time even if it was years ago at school or college. There is a very diverse group of people in and around Wendover who do this twice a year. I’m talking about WENDOVER CHORAL SOCIETY which has been in existence for many years but recently has had something of a rebirth. Not many of the members are good musicians, we can’t all read music and we are not especially young or talented. What we are is enthusiastic and so proud of what we have achieved recently. We would love to welcome new members, especially as our next concert (1 December) should be a beauty. There is no audition to get in and no age limit and you can even try us out before you make up your mind. So, if you fancy it, come along at 7.40 on 6 September when we start rehearsals again. You will be warmly welcomed. We rehearse every Thursday evening between 7.45 and 9.45 in St Mary’s Church, Wendover, so please have a look at our website : www.wendoverchoralsociety.co.uk.

Also see our advert on page 2 in this issue. Great music – lots of fun.

In August Dr Mayurika Wimalaratna will re-join us at Wendover Health Centre for her third and final year of training. New nurse manager On 24 July we welcome Ms Annie Nelhams who is joining us from Charing Cross Hospital as the senior nurse manager for Westongrove. We are very excited about the skills and experience she brings to the practice, especially in running nurse-led clinics dealing with acute illness and minor injuries. Travel clinics We offer vaccines against some of the more serious disease that can be

encountered when travelling overseas, such as hepatitis and yellow fever. We can also provide prescriptions for medicines to prevent malaria. If you are planning a trip overseas and want to utilise this service please complete our travel risk assessment form at least six weeks before you travel. This is available from reception or downloaded from our website. Based on your completed form, you will be advised what vaccines are recommended for the countries you intend to visit, and the cost (travel services fall outside our NHS contract). For those needing urgent protection we suggest you utilise the commercially run MASTA service (http://www.masta-travel-health.com/). New clinical software system We thank you for your patience during the switchover to our new software system, EMIS-Web. The transition went very smoothly and we are already beginning to reap the benefits that it has to offer.

Halton House Open Day 10.00am – 4.00pm, Sunday 9 September 2012 Commissioned by Alfred Rothschild to join the other Rothschild family residences in Buckinghamshire, Halton House was completed in 1883 and for 30 years provided the venue for Alfred’s sparkling weekend house parties which attracted the cream of British society, stars of the theatre and even Royalty. On Alfred’s death in 1918, the House was acquired by the fledgling Royal Air Force and, for the past 90+ years, has served as the Officers’ Mess at RAF Halton. On Sunday, 9 September 2012 the House will be opened to the public. A team of guides will be on hand to elaborate on the history of the House both in the Rothschild era and in RAF hands. A shuttle bus will run between the House and the Station’s Trenchard Museum, where more can be learnt about the history and the RAF’s Apprentice Scheme.

HS2 Wendover HS2 action group The Transport Secretary, Justine Greening, has announced that a public consultation on the compensation scheme for people whose properties are affected by HS2 has been delayed until the autumn. In a written statement to Parliament Ms Greening reminded MPs that she had promised a generous compensation package for those affected, which went above the minimum required by law, and stated that it is imperative that the right package is put in place. Volunteers needed Antony Chapman, Treasurer of the Wendover HS2 action group, is setting up a small fund-raising committee, and needs volunteers. If you are interested please contact him, either by phone on 01296 6 2 3 7 3 0 o r b y e m a i l a t [email protected]. Funds are needed for day-to-day local campaigning activities, as well as to help finance the national campaign against HS2.

HS2 Action Alliance We want to hit our biggest milestone of the campaign so far: 100,000 supporters of HS2 Action Alliance We're not there yet - and that's where you

come in. If you've been waiting for the right time to step up and pitch in to help the campaign against HS2 - it's here. Just think about that number for a second: 100,000 people who, like you, know how critical it is to make the powerful case against HS2 - and are willing to step up and own a piece of making that happen. Get everyone you know who think HS2 represents the wrong choice for our country to sign up as a supporter TODAY at www.hs2aa.org/signup It takes less than a minute to sign up but here's why it matters: This campaign is only as strong as the people behind it. If we don't build our grassroots organisation -- we cannot win. It's as simple as that. HS2 Action Alliance is a national campaign making the powerful case against HS2. Channel Swim

Wendover girl Rebecca Stephenson plans to swim the Channel between 12-14 September in a relay with 5 other swimmers. The Channel swim is an opportunity that Rebecca just couldn’t say no to, especially when it’s a swim team of colleagues from Apadmi and Hiss Design. Having only swum for leisure, but never in open water and being one of the weakest swimmers in the group, Rebecca had a long way to go before being ready for the Channel. The serious work started in October last year with distance training in heated indoor swimming pools. Rebecca completed her first open water swim in Salford Quays at the start of the open water swimming season in April and with 10.5 degree water she was only able to swim 300m in a wetsuit. Now she is swimming nearly 6km without a wetsuit and is one of the strongest swimmers in the team. Her biggest achievement so far was the 1-way 2 person relay of Ullswater (7 miles) on 14 July, where learning to keep warm and getting back into the water when still cold were the challenges. The next milestone for the swim is a 2-way overnight swim of Windermere, 22 miles, as part of a 5 person relay. The swim involves each relay team member swimming for an hour, with the swim expecting to take between 12 and 16 hours, each swimmer will be swimming for 2-3 hours (5-7miles). To qualify for the swim you have to be able to swim for 2 hours without a wetsuit in 15 degree water – which as of 17 July Rebecca has achieved. They are swimming for Cancer Research and Wish Upon a Star, for more details visit www.channelswimmers.co.uk

These letters are all in response to Andrew Radford’s letter in the July edition of Wendover News. We would like to tell the people of Wendover that these big chains do not contribute to local events organised by Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce. One big business, despite numerous appeals for them to support the High Street decorations for the Jubilee and Olympic celebrations, said they were unable to give even a small contribution as they had sponsored elsewhere. The map in the centre of June’s edition of Wendover News lists the businesses which did support this venture from which we continue to benefit and will do so until the end of the Paralympic Games in September. Independent traders including non retailers and businesses not in the High Street gave generously, this includes some businesses with small chains. The Chamber, also concerned about the empty premises in the village, wonders if bigger chains are the answer for Wendover. If they were to come, we would not be able to choose which chains we might or might not like. For those not familiar with The Chamber, we are a small group of local

business owners who give up time to help all local businesses in a variety of ways, eg decorating the High Street and organising events to bring business and new people into Wendover. We are currently working to introduce a loyalty scheme “I Love Wendover”, which we hope will help promote all types of businesses encouraging local people to support their High Street. We all know the saying: “Use us or lose us”. We do not want our High Street to become a clone of every other High Street. Having worked in Wendover for 27 years, my business and others have survived the recessions and despite the very tough economic climate now, many of our High Street shops and businesses appear to be flourishing. Whatever your feelings regarding the bigger chains, there is a darker more worrying cloud hanging over our local businesses which will almost certainly have a detrimental effect, and that is HS2. With the closure of the Ellesborough Road for a minimum of two years, many people who come from that direction will go to Risborough instead rather than take the lengthy diversion into Wendover. I know from past experience as I was trading here when the bypass was built. In addition,

there will be massive disruption and long delays on the A413 with many shoppers and people who work in Wendover experiencing problems travelling in. There will be a reduction in tourism and walkers. All these visitors form an important part of our local economy and are vital if our High Street is to prosper. I look forward to a time when the empty premises are filled with businesses that fit the needs of the community and the character of Wendover.

Yvonne Bone, Scruples Wendover Chamber of Trade & Commerce

As the owner of Rossini, I am able to offer some recent experience about chain shops and address the suggestion that Wendover is becoming a ghost town. In the last nine months I have met and spoken with many prospect ive businesses interested in the Rossini property, including businesses similar to those mentioned by Andrew Radford. The simple fact is that Wendover is not considered by those I have been in contact with to be large enough to support the style and demands of their operation. This is a pity because these businesses generate foot fall from which every local business would benefit, as

Mr Radford infers. His comparison with Hemel Hempstead is not relevant since the population is over 5 times that of Wendover. However, the overriding problem in Wendover High Street, as everywhere else, is not so much the high rents as Mr Radford suggests, I am not aware that Wendover generally suffers from this problem, it is simply that business is tough, very tough, particularly in the catering industry. I see little chance of Wendover becoming a ghost town; it is too vibrant for that to happen as we saw with the hugely successful Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and which we see daily in our other Wendover business, The Children’s Room day nursery in South Street. As we experienced with Rossini, Wendover is also a fun place to trade. How many empty pubs are there in Wendover, yet they’ve been closing at up to 50 a week across the country since 2009. I am frequently asked about the future for Rossini. In addition to the freehold, the property is now available for rent which, had this been the case last October, Wendover would have almost certainly had its sixth ethnic restaurant months ago. I cannot predict who the next occupant will be but unless planning permission was obtained for a change of use, unlikely to be granted, it will remain a hostelry of some description.

Later in the summer, the front on to the High Street will be clad in scaffolding as part of a major renovation necessary to preserve the fabric of the building which in parts, we are told, is four to five hundred years old. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience. We have a clear vision of what Wendover wants Rossini to be, as a lot of people are constantly telling me and we have not totally given up on the idea of re-opening a restaurant designed to meet this demand. Rossini Revived perhaps, watch this space!

John Dennis

Chain Shops in Wendover I believe it has been previously stated in Wendover News, in connection with the Costa Coffee planning application, that it is policy to discourage ‘national brands’ from moving into Wendover. If this is the case and such policy is still in place, then it needs to be recognised that it is a flawed policy. We already have a number of national brands in the village - Tesco, Budgens, Timpsons, Lloyds Pharmacy, Co-op, Lloyds Bank, Chef & Brewer (Shoulder of Mutton), and Harpenden BS and I think most people would agree that if these businesses were not in Wendover, then we would be all the poorer for it and Wendover would be a far less attractive and convenient place to live.

We’re now in a position to give you an update on Wendover Community Library. Progress has been slower than we’d hoped but we’re confident that our plans are taking shape. Bucks County Council has approved Wendover’s plan and a joint working group representing the County Library Service and Wendover Community Library Group has been set up. Wendover Community Library now has a secure future. The professional staff will be supported by trained volunteers. Wendover will have a County Library, complete with the support that this offers, working closely with the local community. This joint arrangement will be an innovative model involving the community. We were pleased to welcome some ninety people to our meetings for prospective volunteers. Training our initial group of volunteers should begin at the end of August. We look forward to having a thriving library for Wendover. We are working with the County Library Service on a five year development plan for the Community Library encouraging local community involvement. We want WCL to become a major hub of community activity in Wendover and the surrounding villages. We anticipate transitional arrangements will apply during September before a formal launch of WCL in October. It’s important to add that Wendover’s Library will remain open as the new arrangements are phased in. You can obtain more information on the progress towards WCL by contacting me, ([email protected]), or any other member of the Wendover Community Library Group.

RAF Halton and the Olympics RAF Halton has been busy preparing for the Olympic Games both nationally in terms of defence and locally supporting the Council’s events. Under Military Aid to the Civil Authorities (MACA) the Armed Forces have been asked to support the Games in a variety of ways, Air and Ground security being just two examples. With approximately 13,500 service personnel involved in the Games in a variety of capacities across the UK, RAF Halton is providing its share of personnel. In addition the Station will be involved in training some personnel for specific tasks. Locally RAF Halton has been busy supporting Aylesbury Vale District Council in their planning for the Olympic Torch Relay. Later in the Games calendar, the local area will take the international limelight at Stoke Mandeville Stadium for the Paralympics Flame Festival. RAF Halton will again be supporting this event with personnel in a variety of roles, proud of its place within the community and happy to be involved in the Council’s Olympics plans. This demonstration of the RAF working together with the local community comes on the heels of Armed Forces Day and suitably represents the mutually beneficial relationship between Buckinghamshire and RAF Halton.

Halton Band Delights Wendover The voluntary band from RAF Halton recently performed a concert in St Mary's church to help raise funds for the on-going restoration fund. The Church which requires funds for continuous restoration turned out to be a superb venue acoustically. The band's Musical Director, Michael Pegram said: “The concert was a rewarding and worthwhile experience for the whole band.” Raising around £1200 the concert was a great success; so much so that the organisers have already asked the band to return in June next year.

RAF Central Band coming The renowned Central Band of the Royal Air Force will perform a charity Big Concert- Let the Chilterns Sing in St Mary’s Church, Wendover at 7pm on Saturday 17 November 2012. Wendover Cricket Club Wendover Cricket Club was pleased to have supported and contributed to the success of ‘Wendover Celebrates’ by sponsoring the Barbeque, as well as jointly running it and providing volunteers in conjunction with the Junior Football Club. Additionally, the Cricket Club answered a last minute call to cut the grass on the fields to an acceptable height.

Weather has played a significant part over the last month and particularly on the junior section. The U15s have only managed to play twice and have had 13 cancellations! In the 2 games they have played, they have produced some outstanding performances. At home to Waddesdon, Wendover racked up 178 for 6 in 20 overs with Tom Grace top-scoring with 44*, whilst Ben Williamson and Tom McPartlan both repeatedly struck the ball out of the ground as they made 40 and 36 respectively in rapid time. In reply, Waddesdon slumped to 40 all out with Matthew Smalley-Harris taking 3 wickets for 1 run and Tom Jackson 3 for 15, whilst Grace held 3 catches in the rout giving a victory margin of 138 runs.

Batting first at Cublington, Wendover U15’s struggled to 55 for 4 after 15 overs but there was an amazing turnaround in the last 5 overs as Tom McPartlan 63* and Dan Norton 16* combined effectively to add a staggering undefeated 83 for the 5th wicket. Wendover’s

total was an impressive 138 for 4 off 20 overs. Cublington’s batsmen responded well to the challenge but Tom Jackson’s 5 wickets for 7 off his 4 overs turned the match for Wendover as the home side were dismissed for 125, with Wendover winners by 13 runs. The 1st XI recorded a win against Haddenham in the league by 5 wickets. In the 2nd XI game against Lacey Green, Harry Robinson junior’s 4 for 22 helped dismiss them for 102 but the batsmen failed and we were all out for 46. A very strong Ley Hill 2nd XI rattled up 231 and led to another defeat. However, a strong performance against the league leaders ensured the 2nd XI earned a creditable draw. The 2nd XI game on 14 July was the only game in the league to survive the weather and Widmer End were bowled out for 128 but Shanil Patel 48 and Will Dean 34 ensured a comfortable win by 3 wickets. In the Village Cup semi-finals, the Tradesmen beat the Dragons whilst the Jolly Boys overcame Sharkey’s Sharks. The final (delayed by the weather) was a closely fought affair and the Jolly Boys just came out on top by beating the Tradesmen by 10 runs, 262 to 252. New players of any age and ability are always welcome and should contact Club Captain Jonathan Seabrook on 01296-623286 or 07718-804 084.

Wendover goes to Highgrove To celebrate 100 years of the Wildlife Trust movement, Prince Charles the patron of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts, recently invited representatives from all over the UK to a reception at Highgrove House. Richard Birch, Wendover resident and chairman of the Chilterns Group of BBOWT, was one of the lucky ones to be given a tour of the gardens and a chance to talk with HRH. ‘It was an opportunity to mention that we help to look after the reserve at Dancers End where Miriam Rothschild carried out early experiments in chalk grassland conservation’, says Richard. ‘HRH explained that Miriam had helped him with his own pioneering efforts at wildflower meadow planting and became a good friend at a time when nature conservation was considered in some quarters to be a bit eccentric.’

Wendover folk interested in helping with local conservation work are welcome to contact Richard on 01296 624511 or [email protected].

Riding for the Disabled Volunteers are urgently needed for the Riding for the Disabled sessions which take place on Wednesdays, 1.30 to 2.45p.m., & Fridays, 1.30. to 3.00p.m., term time only, at the Saddle Club, RAF Halton. We need people willing to walk alongside riders as well as lead ponies so experience with horses is useful but not essential as training will be given. These sessions are immensely rewarding and enjoyable in all sorts of ways, so for further information, please contact Felicity Smettem on 01296 651598 or Claire Marinker, 0845 241 5335 for Wednesdays, Jean Kennedy on 0845 241 1356 or Fee Lightfoot, 07780 862166 for Fridays.

Wendover Juniors Football Wendover Juniors Football Club (WJFC) held their annual football tournament at RAF Halton recently with the help of some of the RAF’s newest airmen, attracting about 4 000 spectators over the 2 day event, which aims to reach out to all children’s football clubs within a 20 mile radius, making it one of the b igges t f oo tba l l tournaments in Buckinghamshire. This year saw an amazing 230 teams from Under 6s to Under 15s! The team captain for Wendover Juniors U13 team, James Patton said: “The team have played in 3 finals recently and have finally won one. Beating Chesham Athletic 2-1 on penalties after extra time was awesome.” Chairman Nick Collier gave a big thank you to those who assisted in making this year’s tournament the most successful ever hosted. WO Chris Eden who helped lead the team said: “With help from all of RAF Halton we all now have a great sense of achievement knowing we have played our part in helping raise in the region of a much needed £8 000 for WJFC who will be contributing £500 to the Station charities fund.”

Wendover Tennis and Squash Club We had a successful Finals Day in July. Our junior summer camps start on 30 July, so go to www.wendovertennisandsquash.co.uk.

The Wendover Society Dr Colin Riley was unanimously elected President of The Wendover Society at a special meeting on 3 July. Dr Riley was a founder member of the first committee when the Society was formed in 1965. Today the Society has well over 400 members and membership continues to grow. Mike Beard, Chairman of the Society, commented: 'After the sad death of Bryan Smith CBE, our previous President, we are very fortunate that Dr Riley, who has done so much for Wendover and its people, has agreed to take on this role.' The meeting also heard from Councillor Oliver Statham, Chairman of Wendover Parish Council Planning Committee, on a possible Neighbourhood Plan. An informal show of hands on this issue demonstrated that most members present were in favour of this.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers Association We will be at the Bucks Show on 30 August in the Home and Garden Marquee, our last outing this year. The poor summer weather has not been good for honey production with many members very pessimistic about taking a honey harvest this year. Let's hope for an Indian Summer! Congratulations to 5 of our members who sat and passed a national beekeeping assessment this summer.

Driving in Wendover In response to Peter Maskell's letter entitled "driving in Wendover", he states

"I often find myself giving way to oncoming traffic by waiting at the end of a row of parked vehicles. Interestingly, there is a myth that this is a requirement laid down in the Highway Code."

Peter doesn't make it clear if the parked cars are on his side of the road or the other. However. The highway code does state . . .

Rule 162 Before overtaking you should make sure

the road is sufficiently clear ahead

there is a suitable gap in front of the road

user you plan to overtake. Rule 163 Overtake only when it is safe and legal to do so. You should . . . (point 6) give way to oncoming vehicles before passing parked vehicles or other obstructions on your side of the road. Rule 167 DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example

where the road narrows (as it would be if

there are cars parked?)

when you would force another road user to

swerve or slow down (as they would have to do if you decide not to stop as they are approaching)

I do agree, though, that some sort of acknowledgement is essential. I've driven on your side of the road, you have had to slow right down/stop to let me pass therefore I will signal my thanks. I am behind a car waiting to turn right across a busy road, I could be there ages but you slow up enough to let the car turn - hopefully the driver will thank you, but I will also signal my gratitude as I can now get on my way.

Anne Cobley Head of Sixth Form

Thanks from IRGH Thanks to everyone who made the Wendover Summer Ball such a success. It raised around £1 000 for our nursing service and the other great news is it looks like we will be able to launch a Wendover Fundraising Group for IRGH off the back of it.

Open Gardens 2 July: What a fabulous day! Thanks to reasonable weather, a great team effort and 6 varied gardens, you helped raise a terrific £2 266. This is the most that a group of gardens has raised for us this year and I would like to thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Presentation of the gardens ranged from ‘wild’ to immaculate and with all the additional attractions, there was something for everyone. I know how much time goes into getting a house and garden ready and appreciate the amazing effort. Thanks in particular to those who served the delicious refreshments, organised additional plant and produce stalls, the quiz, hosted the Iain Rennie merchandise, and helped with brochure distribution and signage. We had around 270 visitors this time resulting from effective advertising, PR and signage and word of mouth recommendations. Thanks to all our volunteers who helped on the day. David and Maggie Parkins had so many on refreshments and produce that it turned into a bit of a party. And why not?! We are still a long way from equalling the amount raised from our last scheme in 2010 so if you know of any sponsors or benefactors who might be interested in match funding the scheme I would be very grateful.

Sharp Memory?

Can anyone help? We have a wall clock in the Antiques Centre which has “SHARP, High Street, Wendover”, written on the dial. We have made enquiries but to no avail. Does anyone know who Sharp may be? Presumably it would have been a shop in the High Street around 1900 - 1920. We are keeping the clock and if anyone would like to see it, it is on the wall behind the counter.

Nicky Gregory Antiques at Wendover

Thank you I am grateful, not least to God, for the privilege of living in a largely honest village. I lost a key in June, and three or four weeks later found it sitting on a post in the street, where someone had kindly put it, having picked it up from the pavement.

Olympics

22 www.wendover-news.co.uk August 2012

The Olympic Torch The arrival of the Olympic Torch in Aylesbury was a once in a lifetime opportunity. It was good to see the whole community come together. Community involvement: this is what the Olympics and the Paralympics are all about. I was pleased that the Torch visited Stoke Mandeville, the home of the Paralympics. There were people lined up along the route from early in the morning and it was a lovely sight to see so many school children joining in such a wonderful event. There was a terrific atmosphere which is helping to build excitement for the Olympics and Paralympics which are happening in August and September.

Cllr Steve Bowles

Achieving your Olympic dreams In 1992 one of my four sons, Matthew Icke then aged just 12, really wanted to go to the Olympic games to see his track and field heroes: Matthew was a very promising young athlete having already become a junior 800m and cross country champion both in the Aylesbury Vale District where he lived and at Dacorum district; as he attended Tring School. However, his most recent success had been to win a special event in Milton Keynes on August Bank Holiday 1991. Matthew's winning Gold medal and prize was presented by another hero of his at the time Seb Coe, twice Olympic Gold Medalist.

It was impossible to afford the very expensive Olympic ticket 'sports packages' for Barcelona accommodation. Matthew and I took a budget flight to Barcelona. Armed with just a photograph of Matthew and Seb Coe from the MK event and a Spanish phrase book we set off to the Spanish national bank; who were selling the Olympic tickets . I think they were taken with the extraordinary efforts we had gone to, to try and buy tickets for the track and field events. Plus after seeing the photograph we were carrying I think they also believed our story of 'Seb Coe World Champion . . .amigo'! allowing us to buy all the track events tickets we wanted including the 100 metre final at which we were privileged to see Linford Christie win gold and take some fantastic photographs; from within the stadium of Linford completing his lap of honour just after winning the 100 Metre Gold. When we arrived back in the UK our friends were waiting at Heathrow with a copy of The Independent with the main back page story showing a photograph of Linford Christie, surrounded by the world press after winning Gold. Linford is coming towards us in the crowd and saluting the Union Jack we are holding up high with TRING A.C written across it.

Local Face : Wendy Lewis

Daughter of a heating engineer father and secretary mother, Wendy Lewis was born and grew up in Warwickshire. Her mother wrote and told imaginative stories to Wendy throughout her childhood which encouraged her to write and draw from an early age. Wendy originally trained as a classical ballet dancer and was a Royal Ballet scholar until her early teens. At school her teacher recognised that she had a considerable ability for art and this led her to apply to art school. She first went to Sutton Coldfield School of Art and began to learn the rigorous discipline of drawing and painting. She then moved up to Birmingham School of Art and Design. Three further years were spent studying graphics and illustration. Whilst there her first three children's picture books were published. Working towards applying to the Royal College of Art she prepared her work diligently as she knew that there was fierce competition. After a whole week of tests and interviews she was awarded a place at this prestigious institution and there she attained her M.A. Seven years art education stood her in good stead for making the serious commitment of being an artist. A Senior Lecturing career ensued with a myriad

freelance art commissions. She worked for many National and International p u b l i s h i n g h o u s e s a n d h a s subsequently illustrated 44 titles, 3 of which she has also written. A BBC children's TV series followed after the success of being listed in the Top Ten of the 'Children's Book Federation' picture book awards. Wendy helped to prepare students for submission to the RCA and a few select students became successful candidates. Living in Harrow as it was close to her work and being on the Chiltern line, it was natural for Wendy to explore this glorious Buckinghamshire area. It wasn't long before she decided that Wendover is where she wanted to live. Wendy has found inspiration for many of her subjects from historic figures and local places in Wendover and the surrounding area. This is evident in her most recent works in oil, water colour and fine drawing, all of which resonate with a sense of place. In her new work place, 'The Loft' studio

and gallery Wendy continues to welcome locals and visitors alike. 'The Loft’ is a delight from where Wendy

paints, draws, writes and will soon be tutoring a NEW beginner's drawing and painting group starting in September. The Barn Courtyard next to Antiques at Wendover is where her studio can be found. From postcards to limited edition prints, charcoal and pencil drawings to large water

colour and oil paintings, it's all there. The Barn courtyard offers an art gallery, bric a brac, gifts, framing service, jewellery and a tea shop. A regular Bucks Open Studios participant and Artist Demonstrator at Art in Action, Wendy is a totally dedicated and long established artist, who believes that she has something unique to offer and would like to thank Wendover for its friendliness and generosity and in particular the church of St Mary's where she worships. In return Wendy would like to reciprocate and extends a warm welcome to ALL at her studio/gallery. www.wendylewis-illustrator.co.uk

View from the Chair As we prepare for our summer holidays, t he re a re m an y ac t i v i t i es in August which the Parish Council is involved with, namely Planning Committees, CIO activities, litter picking and so on. Please note there will not be a main Council meeting. With the added number of visitors to Wendover from far and wide and the fact that it is Olympic year, come more activities that are taken for granted. Hedge cutting, grass cutting, looking after trees and footpaths is at full throttle, especially with the wet weather we have been having. Please report to the Clock Tower any damaged or fallen trees. Half the Parish Council and a lot of other friends and supporters attended the Wendover Summer Ball held in aid of Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice and the Prostate Cancer Charities. Around £2 000 was raised, everyone had a good time and it was extremely well organised by Linda Petrons – a Wendover resident and Iain Rennie Fund raising organiser. Aside from raising money for good causes one of the legacies of the ball will have been to spawn a Wendover fund raising group for Iain Rennie Grove House. There are plans already in place to run something next year but maybe one that appeals to a wider age range. Ideas are welcome but suggestions so far have included a barn dance, a village dance and a ceilidh.

As you can see from the other activities on this page your Parish Council is very busy. Have a wonderful summer break and see you in September.

Robert Duggan, Chairman

Acting Clerk We are pleased to announce that Jill Bottomley, our Deputy Clerk who has done such sterling work covering for the Clerk over the last year or so, has been made Acting Clerk, and Sue Gilbert, who was taken on to assist Jill three months ago, is now our temporary Assistant Clerk, her contract will be renewed until the end of March 2013. After a year of much upheaval things at the ClockTower look good for the future.

Litter It is important that Wendover always looks its best, but litter is an enduring problem. Our groundsmen collect enough rubbish to fill a large 1100 litre bin on a weekly basis. Please be a good citizen and help where you can, perhaps keeping the area outside your home or shop clean and tidy. If you do smoke please do not leave a trail behind you of cigarette butts, cellophane and packets.

Jubilee Oak The Parish Council has accepted a free Jubilee Oak Tree from AVDC who made this offer to all local parishes. It will be planted in October and we would welcome suggestions about where it should be positioned.

Summer Activities at Ashbrook Soccer Schools on Friday evenings at 7pm from 27 July for 6 weeks. £1 per s e s s i o n . 0 7 5 2 5 3 4 9 2 2 8 o r www.playthearsenalway.com. ‘Tag’ Rugby from 3 July for eight weeks on Tuesday evenings at 6pm, girls and boys from 6 to 15 are welcome - 07817 817634.

Flood Lights You may have noticed that the Clock Tower is now more brightly lit at night. We have new LED flood lights which give a better all round illumination and save money on energy bills.

Quiz The Parish Council Village Quiz starts in October and will again be held at the Bowls Club in Dobbins Lane. Entry is free and teams of three are requested to register at the Clock Tower by 3 September.

Water Bailiff Raj McGuinness has been appointed as the volunteer Water Bailiff for Hampden Pond and will be monitoring the fishing, upkeep and condition of the area.
