The July 2012 SJDJS Ses-sion is now a part of our histo-ry. What a day! One of thebest bands we have ever had(the Devil Mountain) provid-ed all the music we could pos-sibly need, want and enjoy.Fantastic! Our attendance was
the best we have seen in many months. Thedance floor was so crowded during the parasolnumbers that you had to keep moving to avoidbeing trampled by the crowd. If you were therein July, thanks for coming.
Next month promises to be another greatsession. Like Monte Hall always said “Come onDown!” It will be two months in a row offantastic headliner bands! Our August guestband is the Cell Block Seven! Bob Romans, theleader (head guard?) of the Cell Block 7, needsno introduction to our Club. Bob has been aSJDJS member for almost forever. He is one ofour pioneers in cultivating youth bands. He hasserved in various offices, including that of Pres-ident. You want to know what Bob looked likewith more hair than the floor of most barbershops? If we can get someone to bring out theSJDJS History Albums, take a look. The veryrich heritage of our Society is well documentedin those pages. We are in need of a Club Histo-rian! No pay, just a fun job, doing your part forour history. It is mostly like scrap-booking andI know there is someone who would enjoy it.
Our elections for office are just around thecorner. Our current slate of officers has agreedto serve again should no other nominations beforthcoming. However, any member of the Soci-ety is eligible to run for office. The well-trav-eled, hard working, dedicated members of our
Traditional / Dixieland Jazz BandCell Block Seven is a jazz band favoring
the West Coast traditional jazz sound of LuWatters, Turk Murphy and the Bay City JazzBand of the '50s, in a classic jazz lineup led bytwo cornets. Their many festivals, tours, andconcert successes are a direct result of their veryprofessional approach coupled with a greatsound and an extensive and varied repertoire. As with most bands, the lineup has changedsomewhat over the years, but most of the pres-ent team have been together for ten years ormore. Cell Block 7 is a very versatile and enter-taining band. By doubling their talents on thethree double bell euphoniums, Cell Block Sev-en is able to produce some very different sounds-- from fast, exciting trios to smooth and mel-low blues, and exciting marches!

Galaviz said he isn’tletting a broken toeslow him down. Hewas looking mighty
fine on the dance floor, and his friend Margie looked pretty in ared fringe dress.
Bev Eggers, Pat Hungerford, HelenTardif, and Pat Anderson were enjoyingthe music and the ambience. Bev Eggersis Virginia Tichenor’s Mother-in-Law.AKA Marty Eggers’ Mom. And a won-derful vivacious lady. She is in the pictureover there, offering to share her parasolwith Dave Radmore. Here’s news if you are wonderingabout the benefit of our Youth fund dol-lars, Rich Kreis told me that Tim (a youngman who really knows his way around thereed instruments) has a gig in Sacramentoon Sundays at “The Porch.” I have such sad news for you, about amember who just gave off sparks of goodwill and joy. Neta Martin had a heartattack and died. Marlena reports that afterthe funeral, there was a New Orleans styleparade, with parasols, and many Red Hat-ted ladies. Neta would have loved it! Ourcondolences to Neta’s family. You may have seen former member,Hazel Dingman’s picture in the newspa-per. She also died in July. She was anactive member in SJDJS for many years. I just heard that Ruth Autrey died of aheart attack. Ruth has volunteered at theAdmissions desk since the 1980s. She tookover the job when her husband passedaway. Ruth has been ill for the past fewmonths, but was at the Admissions deskwhenever she was able. I’ll sure miss her.
HEARD BETWEEN SETSBy Billie Ricker
Oh I hope you allhad half the enjoymentI did. I was in nostal-gia land. Cliff & Iwere Devil Mountaingroupies from the year the band started, until we moved from Tracy. Many fondmemories remain. I’ll spare you the details.
Keith Baltz crooned, “I Wanta be Se-duced,” with the ladies lined up forcingfolding money into his clothes. Poor guy.But he did seem to be bearing up well underall that attention, judging from the smile onhis face in the photo on the facing page.
We are keeping Don Rees in ourprayers. Don had back surgery July 12, nota fun thing to go through. Don & Mary area couple of the good guys!
I am still saving the joke for CarlWarmdahl. Larry Tyrell said that Carlfell while in New Orleans, and chipped abone in his hip. Apparently he didn’t needsurgery, but is on crutches. Drummers notonly use both hands, but also both feet, often at the same time.
Bob Edson said their puppy is doingbetter, but still gets excited and bites every-thing in sight. Frank Lindskoog says hewill bring his new Mustang next month, butif I drool on it, I have to wipe it off.
Dave Tygett was here early decoratingtables, so Kathleen & Stephen Smith wereMarlena’s escorts. The Smiths are in thephoto with new members, Amy Quacken-bush and Gary DeGrande on the facingpage.
Bev Martin said she isn’t using a cane.It only got in her way, so she is just beingcareful. There is no substitute for beingcareful, with or without a cane. Albert

set up and teardown process--- it'sdragging it all outof storage in a
trailer parked a bit of a ways from thebuilding, then making several tripsback and forth to move all the equip-ment. This is repeated at the end ofeach session and is a lot of work. I'd
like to personally thank Art Bregante, Bob Ed-son, Marty Hofheinz and Wilt Fernandez (Equip-ment Manager) for being such a hard workingcrew. They are the backbone of each session andeach deserves a hearty pat on the back.
Here's hoping for another big crowd inAugust and some contributions to our raffle. The raffle proceeds are just just one elementwhich helps our club survive. You can be a partof our life-support system by contributingitems. As you read this, pause for a moment tothink of something that you could contribute, and go put it in the trunk of your car, ready tobring to our next meeting. Just don't forget thatyou put it there, when you come to the meeting.
Telling you thatthe Devil Mountainwas fantastic wouldbe an understate-ment. They nailed it, nailed it,NAILED IT! Was it fun? OOOOHYES ! ! This was all made possiblethrough the generous contribution ofDave Radmore. He wanted DevilMountain, and he got Devil Mountain by spon-soring the band. Do you see how well sponsor-ship works? And another set of "those-who can-nail-it" will be aboard for the month of August, this time with a bit of help in sponsorship fromLarry Tyrell and Dick Lockwood. The bandwill be Cell Block Seven, unleashed from theircages for a rousing session. Will it be fun?Well, why don't you just come and find out.
In July we had some new jammers. Youthmembers Tim Kreis, Matt Seno, Hannan Ha-feez, and Angie Reed were assisted by "not-youth" members Kristy Reed, Bill Sharp, Bon-ny Otto, Mark Kramer, and Jack Mootz to kickoff the first jammers set. The talented kidseasily handled the tunes. As team members onstage they made great music and set the tone fora very nice start for the day. Most of the newfolks were from Sacramento, and hopefully willreturn again soon. One who made a nice im-pression was Angie Reed, who at age 14 beltedout a few vocals, and demonstrated the she hasa nice set of pipes. Other jammers throughoutthe day were Dannie Balser, Don Rees, BobEdson, Steve Lee, Frank Lindskoog, LorenIversen, Dick Lockwood, and Ray Farley. Thanks to those members for coming to helpprovide music between the guest band sets.(We wish Don Rees a quick recovery from hisback surgery, which is coming up.)
By the way, you get to hear all of the musiceach month because of the hard working crewthat comes early before each monthly meetingto set up the sound system. It’s not just a simple
